Overwrought nunsploitation drama

Warning: Spoilers
Ricky Greenwood (aka Eric Boisvert- French to English translation of his stage name) scored his breakthrough success in Adult Cinema with a pair of fine Nuns dramas starring Charlotte Stokely for Sweetheart Video, but he overreached with this painfully "serious" and even preachy Missa X release.

Screenplay by Maddy Barton (using her latter respelling Burton) and Shawn Alff painstakingly criticizes the Catholic church, creating a workable story of Sister Charlotte (Stokely) publishing a bestseller "Under the Veil" with her literary agent Aiden Ashley, that is an erotic bestseller limning misbehavior at the convent. It's jokingly referred to as a Harlequin release -auteur Ricky being a Canadian.

Key bad guy Helena Locke, as the convent's Mother Superior, consistently overacts for Ricky, nearly turning the solemn, hard to watch 5-hour opus into camp. But it is devoid of comic relief, merely overemphasizing obvious critiques of church hypocrisy as well as including topical elements of feminism and needed reforms that ring false (and obviously self-serving) in a porno context. In terms of Canadian content, "The Handmaid's Tale" this ain't.

As central protagonist, Kenna James brings her warmth and convincing innocence to the role of a virgin (natch) nun who is being manipulated by Helena and secretly loved by Father Tommy (Pistol) who runs the convent. Unfortunately, when she inevitably has XXX scenes, both lesbian (with Charlotte) and boy/girl with Tommy, her prowess is way out of character.

Subplots concern a kinky wedding night throwback (priest watching the sex) featuring Ashley Lane and Dante Colle; Archbishop Steve Holmes, who exemplifies church corruption with his use of so-called Vestal Virgins (beauties Anny Aurora, Jane Wilde and Lily Bell) who are groomed to sexually serve him and other church elders, as well as Helena's antics. Ultra-violence is depicted as Helena makes use of flogging and even deadly garroting, as well as a brief but gory putting out of an eye scene (yielding good makeup SPFX by Alexxx Moon). Greenwood/Boisvert's affection for genre films gets the best of him here, unlike his tasteful Sweetheart nuns movies.

Another defect is the overlong movie's claustrophobic approach (unlike the Sweetheart predecessors), shot entirely indoors on convincing sets courtesy of that hall of fame actress Kyie Ireland. Tommy Pistol contributes his usual overacting, but fortunately his tattoos are invisible here, via clothing covering them up plus low lighting and perhaps makeup/post-production doctoring (?) in his nude scene.
