I can't say I'm not glad that Oba-san decided to take the realistic route of showing the consequences of naïve pacifism in making excuses for their choice to not save the girl, which is rather, an act of cowardice, though understandable. The harsh storytelling unfolds yet again with an uncomfortable truth that sometimes killing someone is necessary to prevent more innocent blood from being spilled, in direct opposition to Mirai's core ideology of make love, not war, and by extension pacifism, which the red arrow aptly represents.
Mirai's flashback episode is just as tinged with realism as it unfolds in a rather inarticulate manner, but contrary to expectations, fits his naïve mindset perfectly.
With that said though, it's a little disappointing that the animators did not manage to capture the full beauty of the original manga panel of Kanade admiring the frozen corpse of her sister in suspended animation, of which the ethereal feeling was not translation to animation.
Nonetheless, a good episode of PE, 8.2/10.
