Oracle founder Larry Ellison is engineering a major reorganization of his daughter Megan Ellison’s struggling Annapurna Pictures, according to several people familiar with the situation. The studio has been hemorrhaging money for years and continues to suffer an exodus of top executives who have either been forced out or who left on their own accord. The latest casualty, film president Chelsea Barnard, was fired this week.
Since launching seven years ago, Annapurna quickly established itself as a favorite production company among auteurs, backing films of critically beloved directors such as Kathryn Bigelow, Paul Thomas Anderson and David O. Russell. It developed a reputation for being immune to the kinds of financial challenges and volatility that many other indie companies have faced. The reason, agents and artists point out, was that it has continued to benefit from the deep pockets of Megan’s billionaire father. Both she and her brother...

Director discusses new crime-drama starring Daniel Auteuil, his passion for true stories and future projects
French director Vincent Garenq’s new film Kalinka, starring Daniel Auteuil as real-life French accountant André Bamberski who spent 30-years battling to put the German doctor who raped and killed his teenage daughter behind bars, was one of the buzz titles of this year’s Unifrance Rendez-vous with French Cinema in Paris over the weekend (Jan 14-18).
The film is based on Bamberski’s autobiographical Pour Que Justice Te Soit Rendue (So That You See Justice Done) detailing his fight for justice which began in July 1982 after his teenage daughter Kalinka was found dead in bed while on holiday with her mother Danielle and her second husband, a German doctor called Dieter Krombach.
A detail in the post-mortem that there were signs of injury to the girl’s genitals convinced Bamberski that his daughter had been raped before her death and that...

Director of Presumed Guilty, which exposed miscarriage of justice in Mexico City, awaits rulings on claims for compensation
When Presumed Guilty – the nightmarish tale of a street vendor in Mexico City who was twice wrongly convicted of murder – was released in 2011, it won an Emmy for investigative journalism, broke Mexican box-office records, and triggered a fierce debate over the country's dysfunctional judicial system.
Nearly three years later, as important legal rulings are expected in two cases over the documentary, the film is banned in Mexico and the director has received death threats.
"The caller told me to tone things down or else," said Roberto Hernández. "The first threat was veiled, the second directly said they would kill me."
Hernández and his team set out to highlight the number of innocent people in the capital's jails through the story of a street vendor convicted of murder on very flimsy evidence amid...

In the new tell-all book, Casey's attorney Jose Baez writes that the detectives should have realized that Casey was someone with 'serious mental health issues.' According to the new book Presumed Guilty, Casey Anthony: The Inside Story, Casey Anthony -- the Florida mother who was acquitted of murdering her 2-year-old daughter Caylee -- had mental health problems that lead to her habit of lying. In attorney Jose Baez book about the trial, he wrote how the detectives should have realized Casey had built a "fantasy world," and her lies were signs of someone with "serious mental health issues." He writes how Casey deceived the detectives and even too them to Universal Studios where she falsely claimed she had a job. Baez concluded that they "should have stopped and realized, 'Wait a minute, we're not dealing with someone who is playing with a full deck.'" Casey was acquitted of...

Casey Anthony's lawyer Jose Baez says she lived in a "fantasy world" in his soon-to-be-released book. In Presumed Guilty, Casey Anthony: The Inside Story, Baez writes that Anthony's lies to police weren't proof of her guilt but, instead, revealed someone who had "serious mental health issues," according to a copy obtained by the Associated Press."I wrote the book because there was so much that people didn't know, and still don't know," Baez tells People. "This book is more than 420 pages of nothing but the inside story. I think people's reaction will be surprised at how much they don't know.

The Grey – In media res
Near the end of Joe Carnahan’s admirably ambling survival thriller, the energy begins to re-mount as it becomes clear that Ottway (Liam Neeson) is about to make what may be his final stand against the wilderness that has dogged him and his fellow survivors for the last, oh, 110 minutes or so. Then, a sight familiar to anyone who’s seen promotional materials: Neeson taping broken bottles between his knuckles, with a knife in the other hand. For the last time, visions of his wife return, once again intoning, “don’t be scared,” only this time revealed to have a very different meaning than we might previously have inferred.

Présumé Coupable (English title: Guilty)
Directed by Vincent Garenq
Screenplay by Vincent Garenq and Serge Frydman
France. 2011
There are few things which can grip a nation’s passions quite like a striking, controversial and prolonged court case. In some instances, the nature of the crime is what shocks, as in the Canadian case involving B.C. Pig farmer Robert Pickton, who for years preyed on hookers are drug users in Vancouver. Other examples stun for their conclusion, like with the infamous O.J. Simpson trial in the United States. Then come the trials for which both the nature of the crimes and conclusions are overshadowed by the actual process of conviction, a perfect example being the Outreau case in France, which director Vincent Garenq explores in its entirety in Présumé coupable.
It is the middle of the night when the Marécaux residence is abruptly disturbed from its slumber. An alarming number...

★★★★☆ Concerning the most horrific legal scandal in modern French history, director Vincent Garenq's Guilty (Présumé coupable, 2011) is a gripping drama based on the memoirs of Alain Marecaux (Philippe Torreton) who was wrongly accused of several accounts of child molestation and thrust into a terrifying web of false testimonies and heavy handed police investigations.
Early one morning, Alain Marecaux awoke to the sound of sirens at his rural home. The police instantly arrested him and his wife under suspicion of their involvement in an underground paedophilia ring. They ransacked his home looking for evidence and quickly separated him from his two sons and daughter.
From that moment on he was subjected to the wrath of prejudice police officers and the accusative nature of a power hungry young judge. He found himself imprisoned for a crime he never committed, with the injustice he suffered culminating in numerous suicide attempts, the breakup...
