Smart and Nasty
bohare-37-7553655 January 2014
An impressive and intelligent thriller/noir in the vein of the Coen Brother's "Blood Simple". Desperate characters on the margins of society. They're barely hanging on as they dwell in the dark cracks of the California dream. The film is like razor wire, stretched tight, ready to snap and cut everyone in half. Solid acting. Looks great. Fab score. It's even got meteorites. And it's all done on what appears to be a shoestring. (Which makes what they pulled off all the more impressive.) Looking forward to seeing what director Gurzi can do with a real budget. He's obviously a bold filmmaker - one who's sure not gonna pull his punches. "Heaven Strewn" is definitely worth a watch.

A well-made debut by a first-time filmmaker.

Warning: Spoilers
Mickey and Jasper have been friends since they were kids, but that doesn't mean they share the same brain. Now in their 30s, they have actually grown in two different directions though they are still loyal to one another. Jasper is attempting to get his life together, he is a staff writer for the Los Angeles Chronicle, but his job is in jeopardy. His girlfriend is pregnant and, naturally, wants him to become more responsible. Mickey, on the other hand, is always looking for a quick fix. He counterfeits money and is currently licking his wounds after a botched transaction.

With that, you would imagine that you already know where a movie like Heaven Strewn is going, but here is a movie that takes a familiar plot and is crafted so well that you are with it every step of the way. It is a character study and a thriller and first-time director Jeremiah Gurzi presents both with a sharp eye and a clear focus.

Hoping to recoup his losses, Mickey talks reluctant Jasper into driving into the desert to look for meteorite fragments which could be worth quite a bit of money. Out among the sand and the rocks and the burning sun, they witness something – three shady-looking guys in a convertible who bury something in the dirt and drive away. What is it? A body? Cash? Drugs? Kimchi? Mickey goes digging and can't help stealing what he finds there despite pleas from Jasper to leave it alone.

What happens next must be left for you to discover, only to say that Mickey and Jasper find themselves in hot water with the three guys from the convertible leading to a scene of frightening tension as the trio close in on their motel room. It is a scene created without flash or over-hyped false tension. We know where all of the players are at all times so that the scene plays naturally and with a lot of scary tension. Director Gurzi has a sure hand at how to put an action scene together so that it doesn't feel like every other thriller that you've seen.

Even with that, he also knows how to create tension between Mickey and Jasper. What happens to their friendship is logical based on what we know about their personalities and, in a powerful scene,,Jasper gives Mickey an ultimatum that seems perfectly reasonable. Neither of these guys are exactly brilliant in their decision-making and that makes the tension between them and in their circumstances all the more unpredictable. This is one of those films in which the pieces fall together when you start thinking back on it.

If there is one weakness in the film, it is the ending. What happens in the final scene is completely logical but the film arrives quickly at an ending that seem somewhat abrupt. It doesn't destroy the fabric of the film but it leaving you feeling as if there is still some unfinished business. Still that's a small criticism of an otherwise fine film from a an exciting new filmmaker.

Very well crafted film about friendship, greed, danger, and love.

Warning: Spoilers
I saw this on a referral from a friend. Wasn't expecting anything in particular. Not long after the movie started, I was pulled in by the elegant craft of this film. The character, Mickey is lovable and entertaining all the way through. The relationship between the husband/wife characters: Jasper and Anna is touching, and the driving force behind the increasing friction of friendship between the two leads, Jasper and Mickey. As Mickey haphazardly wrangles them into a harrowing dealing with stolen thug money in the desert, and back to the city to reap the consequences, their long time friendship unravels and threatens to come to an end.

The filmmakers make excellent use of their resources, crating well made scenes, excellent photography, and use of whatever environment they happen to be in. The directing of actors is top notch. There were few if ever a moment that released me from the characters adventure.

I look forward to the filmmakers next incantation.

Thriller

I think JT Gurzi is the new film director we all should be watching for. His story line keeps the viewer engaged and wanting more. I absolutely love this film and intend on watching it again. I first watched it at a friends house and had to order my own copy. Makes you wonder if you really have that kind of friend. Mickey and Jasper make quite the pair. Then there's that Anna and Diablo, not to mention Snipes. I'm not giving more info on this film because it would spoil it for those who have yet to watch it and I highly encourage you to do so. Bring me more Mr. Gurzi, please!!! One of the better crime thrillers I've watched in a long long time. It's that good 👍

An honest gem!
leo-180-846147 December 2014
This is the first feature-length directorial effort of a talented filmmaker, and based on this impressive debut, I look forward to seeing more. This movie is a personal and honest portrayal of male friendship, wrapped up in a tale of palpable mortal danger. Virtuoso camera work is incorporated subtly, and always at the service of the story, rather than for the purpose of calling attention to itself. This measure of restraint is rare among filmmakers of Mr. Gurzi's generation, and an indication of what he has yet to offer as an artist. Serious craft on display here, folks. Worth a second viewing (at least) not only for the reasons mentioned above, but also for the disc commentary that offers a valuable look at the creative process. If you appreciate and understand true filmmaking, I recommend this gem from a director who obviously understands it too.

Solid little crime thriller worth watching!
rofo120 November 2011
First-time filmmaker JT Gurzi gets winning performances from his two leads (Wyatt Denny's character especially of note - keep an eye out for this guy and say you saw him here first), and he lays out a nicely-measured-paced, thought-provoking, crime conundrum story. Excellent camera work and a score that makes you want to buy the soundtrack help make this a solid, low-key,character-based thriller worth watching. If you like a Wim Wenders/Jim Jarmusch/John Cassavetes-like indie approach to crime stories, you should appreciate what Gurzi is doing here. I'm interested in seeing what this guy puts together next, and you should be too.

If you like to be entertained, moved or inspired....Then watch Heaven Strewn
cnewmark9928 August 2011
Crime, family, friendship, love, very good luck and very bad luck, high speed chases, guns, addicts, suspense, treasure hunts, comedy, and beautifully shot scenery are a few words to describe some of what is packed into Heaven Strewn in under 80 minutes. The story was brilliantly told by Mr.Gurzi(writer/director) without any "extra fluff" or unnecessary scenes (which is all too common). It was enjoyable to experience the entire time. The actors were superb with stand out performances by almost all of them. In particular Rob Tepper (Jasper) really gave a memorable, moving, performance. Without a doubt Heaven Strewn is worth checking out. Bravo to all involved in making this gem and bringing it to life...

If you've ever had that friend
erinmaryfoote27 August 2011
Heaven Strewn is a good movie. The relationship between the two main characters is something that is easy to relate to. A person that is your friend, or someone your dating, that is so magnetic in one sense, but also self destructive and it affects you. The constant struggle. Not many movies,at least that I have seen, do this well, or do it at all. Some movies can't pull off stories about human relationships without adding unnecessary stuff into the movie. Dialog was nicely done.

As a starting director and with a limited budget it makes the movie even more impressive. I can't wait to see what J.T. Gurzi does next.

The Importance of Being Earnest
bpisbpisbp16 December 2011
This film reminds me of the so called 'first films' of some of my favorite contemporary storytellers and directors who have gone on to make consistently great films throughout their careers. Like when I saw 'Bottle Rocket' for the first time. This film had the same sort of fresh sincerity and lawlessness that can only be achieved by a true storyteller who knows what they are doing around a camera - and the value of having someone's attention from opening frame to end. Time well spent. Hit me right where it hurts at a time in my life where I have been struggling with letting go of tough times for love of chaotic circumstances and friends. Beautiful. Tender. Intensely personal without being overly sentimental or distractingly snarky. I can't wait to see what comes out of Gurzi next.

Amateur attempt flops completely

I wanted to like this movie, being a desert flick and all, but overwhelming problems prevented that from happening. Number 1: If your movie lacks subtitles, then record the dialog SO YOU CAN HEAR IT! There are these things available called wireless microphones. Number 2: Editing...overly long scenes (such as the one that opens the movie) cause the viewer to LOSE INTEREST rapidly. Number 3: Camera...use a good one; this looks like it was shot on a camcorder. Number 5,000: Script...oh, forget it.
