The plot in short: Henry has a serious inability to find proper solutions for conflicts with his boss, his colleagues, and his family, and this causes him to make things go bad for everybody. He sees violence and blood as answers to problems but knows society wont accept that. After getting fired by his bullying boss, Henry seeks revenge on the rude self-centered woman and wants some vindication. By exploiting the naivety of his now former boss's young daughter, he finds a unique way of getting in to assault them in their home and to force his former boss to get him a new job - guess where - at the local cemetery. At this point, it has to be mentioned that despite the serious intention and subject, there is also a lot of dark humor and sarcasm mixed in.
The young girl, Chloe, and her mother suffer post-traumatic stress from the assault, but cope with it in totally different ways throughout the year following the attack. Meanwhile, Henry is bullied in his new job, too, and his idea of dealing with the perpetrators is to dissociate into his aggressive fantasies of horribly violent actions against them. This allows him a gruesome temporary relief.
Although the plot contains a lot of psychological aspects and hints, it is less focused on Henry's developing interest in necrophilia, and more immersed with the conflicts that keep coming his way. And he isn't the only protagonist of the story, the longer it goes, the more Chloe becomes the protagonist and she becomes the central character until a dramatic, violent showdown between her and Heny. The inventive ending is a surprise in two ways and absolutely unpredictable and unexpected.
I think many people will be entertained with Fragments' fast pace and its somewhat typical slasher film structure. Yet it is more than just that, because Henry is portrayed not only as a villain, but as a victim, too; and further, his victims become villains in many aspects of their characters as well.
Fragments offers a lot of gore and even some supernatural effects where it remains unclear if these "fragments" originate from Henry's fantasy - or are they really happening? It is amazing how great the special effects are, especially for a low-budget film!
I was hoping for more sexually deviant scenes and a look into the psychology behind them. They exist within the film but If you're expecting a lot of necrophilia, you might not be completely satisfied. Still, there are some sexually charged scenes, including a shock where an escort finds herself in a very bizarre situation that would freak most anybody out.
