I just watched the series up until now, and it's actually quite good, though it's not perfect. At first I thought "SD Gundam? Oh, crap..." but after watching it, I actually found it to be way better than I had expected.
The show is based on "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", a very old Chinese story, which takes place in an eastern setting, before the Middle Age, and the show follows the original plot closely most of the time, though there are some exceptions, one of them being the Youshou Warriors' ability to combine (which just means Shang Fei (Z Gundam) and Guan Yu (ZZ Gundam) give Liu Bei (Gundam) their shoulder pads), and Lu Bu's horse, Red Hare, being able to transform into a motorcycle, for no apparently explained reason at all.
Like most SD Gundam series, Sangokuden managed to make it both awesome and hilarious at the same time, watching the battles between armies of small Super-Deformed Gundams, but the battles are not the only great thing about the show. The plot is quite easy to deal with in the beginning, but it will most likely change greatly near the end.
