Fun Kills but Terrible Writing and Acting
timothygartin19 March 2020
The idea in this movie is good where a Bigfoot documentary goes bad. The problem is that the writing is terrible. I think the writer wanted to make a horror/comedy but the jokes and humor are poor. It is really lazy and uninspired. Along with that, the acting and direction are really awkward.

I would have given this one a one-star review except for the kills. They are so over-the-top and goofy that they make the movie fun to watch. The first one where Jane Doe dies really sets the tone. I almost gave up on this until that kill. These are the only reason to watch this movie, but that's ok.

Lame and inane
Leofwine_draca10 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
BLOODWOOD CANNIBALS is once again another dull indie horror flick set in the local woods. A couple of extremely lame Bigfoot hunters head off on a hunt for a remarkable creature, but instead find a random cannibal tribe with a penchant for human flesh. What follows is an odyssey of wooden acting, terrible costumes, cheap gore effects, and very bad action scenes, although not until the very end. It's lame and inane.

I'm being generous with that rating

Warning: Spoilers
Low budget doesn't even begin to COVER how bad this movie is. The opening sequence with the 'nature documentary narration' was cute. It would've been quite effective, had this been a campy comedy. Unfortunately, the film takes itself waaaaay to seriously. Begin with the horrible opening music. The soundtrack sounded like a bunch of power tools being banged together with handsaws and socket wrenches. The 'host' with his FAKE Australian accent was too annoying for words. It seemed like he was trying to channel Steve Irwin, which was a slap in the face to the Irwin family. He was hammy and overacted every line of dialogue he had. Even his SENSITIVE moment by the fire, talking about the plane crash, was overdone.

The 'assistant', who was brought along to be a 'step and fetchit' for the producer, was bland and one-note with every line she delivered. There was absolutely NO inflection in her voice whatsoever. She sounded like she was reading a pizza menu, for f***s sake.

The 'feral' girl they found was terrible. I was a performer in a traveling carnival show for a little while one summer. I volunteered to be 'Zoma the Wild Girl'. I had to act like a savage, and let me tell you, I scared the bejeezus out of the customers with my act. This girl couldn't scare a friggin mouse. She was too clean and too neat to have been living in the woods for as long as they say she did. In fact, all of the 'cannibals' were a little too neatly pressed.

Segue to the tavern, where everyone was enjoying a pint. The exterior, where the producer and the tracker were attempting to 'flirt' with each other. It reminded me painfully of a seriously badly acted porno, it was that clumsy and uncomfortable.

The dialogue was wretched. Overall, there was nothing to like about this film. And it doesn't even really QUALIFY as a 'found footage film', as the majority of it was shot from a third person perspective.

Extremely low budget fun
krachtm10 February 2011
At first, I thought this movie was going to be so low budget that it'd be unwatchable, but I overcame the impulse to turn it off and soldiered on. Am I glad that I did? I suppose so. Some of the special effects were laughably bad (which kind of kills the appeal of watching a splatter movie), the acting was atrocious in a few scenes (I suppose they didn't have enough money to reshoot those scenes, unfortunately), and the whole virus/cannibal thing was pretty old ten years ago, but -- and here's the thing that saved the movie for me -- it was done with such enthusiasm, I couldn't help but like it. I can't really recommend this movie to anyone except Troma fans, who are likely to forgive the flaws in any movie that has nudity and gore. Just be forewarned that the nudity is fleeting and the gore very cheaply done.

I hope that if the director does more movies, they won't be as stereotypical and uncreative, but, as a first effort, this really isn't so bad. Even James Cameron had to start with Piranha 2.

PLEASE DON'T TAUNT THE CANNIBALS
nogodnomasters15 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The movie opens smartly as a documentary of the ecosystem of the Pacific NW, claiming the area is large and diverse enough to support large predators. WE then see a young boy abducted by a cannibal. Sweet!. We know he is a cannibal because it is in the title of the movie. Bloodwood gets it name from the reddish tree bark appearance.

The movie shifts to a film crew shooting scenes of Nigel (British accent) trying to locate Big Foot. In trying to find Big Foot they come across a feral woman who they capture, but not without the guide getting bit. Those who watch zombie movies will be able to appreciate the implication.

Nigel decides to shift gears and hunt for other feral people in the words. The crew enters the forest the same time as does a flower photographer and 2 hunters. At this point the plot is established and it is just a matter of who lives and who dies...and who gets bit.

I was really impressed for a low budget film. The acting was decent. The dialogue, somewhat amusing. The movie was written, produced, directed, camera man, boom man and starring Joshua Siegel. It is a worthwhile view for those who don't take their horror films too seriously.

Brief nudity.

An indie worth adding to your collection.
npproductionco14 March 2011
I have to give credit to the producer. He had a vision of making a little Horror flick with heart, and he made lemonade out of lemons. This film is entertaining for the low-budget indie audience. "Bloodwood Cannibals" certainly won't be nominated for an Oscar, but I could see this little film easily becoming a cult classic. There were two actors I thought gave decent performances. Some of the other's should either take classes, or never show themselves in public again. The blood, guts, violence & gore were amusing & I laughed. Some of the special effects were terrible, yet I understood what the director was aiming for. The story was written well, and the scenery throughout the film is quite beautiful. We all have to start somewhere in our career. Johnny Depp's first role in "Private Resort" is a prime example. This is the type of film I'd watch again with friends to share a few laughs.

This may be low budget, but it is still fun
LevelEightParanormal10 January 2011
This is a movie that interested me from the time I picked up the DVD case. My wife and I watched the movie and enjoyed the storyline. I will not give away the story but it is a good twist on the cannibal genre. If you truly want to enjoy this movie, be sure to watch the extras and go to the websites that are mentioned. The acting is what it is. The special effects are good for the budget. I would to see more about the background of the character Nigel. I would like to know what exactly happened to him that made him famous. I hope there is a sequel, or a prequel. I will definitely be waiting for it. I hope they have a bigger budget for the next movie, I know the director has the right ideas to change cannibal movies for the better.

Low Budget Fun
shivamonster6 January 2011
I wasn't expecting much from a movie with a cheesy title like "Bloodwood Cannibals" but I was pleasantly surprised by this DVD. The story follows a monster hunting film crew who are faking a documentary about Bigfoot when they find a crazy half naked woman in the forest. They attempt to "rescue" her, things go wrong, and violent mayhem ensues. Scalpings, gut-ripping, dismemberment... all the good stuff.

The movie is clearly low budget, but the zany mix of laughs and scares make it a really fun ride. If you go in wanting a movie like "Cannibal Holocaust" you'll be disappointed. But if you like crazy little indie films in the splat-stick vein, this movie is a fun one to watch with friends.

Worth Watching
mgcarter5830 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Brings me back to the days when I use to do sleep overs at my friends house. We would try to stay up all night watching scary movies with Elvira "Mistress of the Dark", Svengolie, or other similar late night horror guides. For the budget, this is a well directed film with the potential to become a cult classic. The only disappointment is the director kills off the key character making it difficult (but not impossible), to make a sequel. Who kills off Indiana Jones??? I would to see more about the background of the character Nigel. Perhaps he will consider a prequel explaining how Nigel got famous. I would definitely recommend this movie.

Incredibly Fun B-Horror movie
frank-6763 January 2011
This movie will not get an Oscar. But, I absolutely loved watching it. Three times so far. It's a wonderful, absolutely perfect B-Movie, independent horror movie. Great, bloody gore, boobies, and above all, an enthusiasm by the actors and film makers that makes it incredible. Yes, it's not as fast paced as today's MTV audience would like, but I was never bored. This movie made me happy, happy, happy. Happy that people are out there making crazy, crappy, fun, gory, B-Horror films. Loved it. Apparently this is one of the film makers earlier films, and I understand it is not perfect, but, wow, it was truly fun to watch. The editing in the final portion of the film was great. I cannot wait to see more from this filmmaker. Why do people make movies that are so serious and "real' all the time. Make 'em FUN. This is one of those! Popcorn deliciousness.

Nifty backwoods horror outing
Woodyanders14 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The crew of the reality TV series "Hunting the Unknown" venture into the remote wilderness to film a segment on Bigfoot. Instead they stumble across a lethal clan of ferocious feral cannibals. Writer/director Joshua A. Siegel relates the entertaining story at a brisk pace, delivers a handy helping of gruesome gore, makes good use of the isolated sylvan setting, develops a reasonable amount of tension, and tops everything off with an amusing sense of lowbrow humor. Moreover, it's acted with zest by an enthusiastic cast, with especially commendable work from Nathan Anthony Carter as pompous charlatan show host Nigel Thorne, Kate Forsyth Corey as spunky long-suffering producer Lindsey Amos, Matthew Corbett Davis as rugged guide Roy Henderson, Siegel as obnoxious jerk Dave Nelson, Darren Courtney as amiable cameraman Mark Cavanaugh, and Cori Jenab as eager rookie TJ Lane. The flesh-eating freaks are pretty frightening: Joe Calavita makes a strong impression as fearsome leader Big Papa and Steve I. Everson is quite unnerving as the maniacal Hyena. The grim tone gets more progressively bleak and upsetting as the plot unfolds. Everson's crisp cinematography provides a pleasing polished look. The lively primal score by Brent Walsh and Martijn de Man does the rousing trick. A solid little shocker.
