Epix has given a November 8th, 11pm premiere date for "Filthy Gorgeous: The Bob Guccione Story," its doc about the late Penthouse magazine founder and "Caligula" funder. Directed by Barry Avrich ("Unauthorized: The Harvey Weinstein Project"), the film's television debut will come not long after its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival this month. The film will trace Guccione's life as an unlikely catalyst for '60s counter culture and his eventual downfall and loss of his fortune. "Bob Guccione was a complex man whose publications impacted the lives of many, both in positive and negative ways. The film is incredibly intriguing and one our viewers will not want to miss," said Epix president Mark Greenberg in the announcement. The network premiere of "Filthy Gorgeous" will be followed by an airing of "Caligula," the notorious 1979 film directed by Tinto Brass.

By yesterday afternoon, word was out that the New York Film Festival's surprise film later that evening would be Hugo, introduced by Martin Scorsese himself. Of course, it's a work-in-progress, with color correction, a proper score and evidently much more still on the to-do list. "Scorsese and his Aviator screenwriter John Logan have adapted Brian Selznick's acclaimed novel-comic hybrid The Invention of Hugo Cabret as a pure tribute to not only cinema, but also the endangered legacies of its earliest practitioners," writes Movieline's St VanAirsdale before laying out an array of first impressions: "Surprises are fun, but the jury is out." IFC's Matt Singer: "The film's schmaltzy trailer may have left some die-hard Marty fans scratching their heads why Mr Mean Streets would make a heartwarming family film, but Hugo is actually the Scorsesiest Scorsese movie in years." The Playlist finds Hugo to be "one of his most deeply personal films.

How do you create a documentary when no one with real answers will talk to you? That’s the difficult question the filmmakers behind the new movie, Unauthorized: The Harvey Weinstein Project, struggled with. Why? Well, Matt Damon once told author Peter Biskind that Weinstein was like the scorpion who bites the frog who is ferrying him across the river, dooming them both to die. “‘Why did you do that?’ asks the dying frog. The scorpion just looks down at him and says, ‘Because I’m a scorpion, it’s my nature.’”

IFC Films acquired Barry Avrich’s “Unauthorized: The Harvey Weinstein Project” and Werner Herzog’s 3-D doc “Cave of Forgotten Dreams.” These marked the latest moves in the company's active buying spree at the Toronto International Film Festival.
“Unauthorized” traces the legendary co-founder of Miramax’s path from concert promoter on the cold streets of Buffalo to his first trip to the Cannes Film Festival, where he arrived with one pair of pants and closed his first movie deal, to winning an Oscar, and breaking the bank with his first $100 million film.
“Cave of Forgotten Dreams” takes audiences into the Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc cave in southern France, which holds the earliest known visions of mankind.

Toronto -- In a move that injects a new contender into this year's Oscar race, Lionsgate has picked up North American rights to John Cameron Mitchell's "Rabbit Hole," which had its world premiere Monday at the Toronto International Film Festival.
As the festival winds to its Sunday close, other distributors were lining up films that could play next year's festival circuit: IFC Films said it has acquired worldwide rights, except Canada, to Barry Avrich's documentary "Unauthorized: The Harvey Weinstein Project," and Sony Pictures Classics said it picked up North American rights to Pedro Almodovar's latest movie, gothic thriller "The Skin I Inhabit," now filming.
Additionally, Anchor Bay Films has secured rights to "Carjacked," a thriller being directed by John Bonito ("The Marine").
Lionsgate will release "Rabbit" by year's end, and based on positive reactions here, that should make the movie a player during awards season.

Avrich previously claimed the film would be balanced, rather than a hatchet job. The film isn't yet finished, and a release date hasn't been reported.[Deadline] After the break,...

Harvey Weinstein was all over the Toronto Film Festival this week acquiring three high-profile films in Dirty Girl and Submarine and Sarah's Key, and unveiling Oscar-buzzed The King Speech. IFC has announced it acquired worldwide rights to Unauthorized: The Harvey Weinstein Project, the Barry Avrich-directed and produced documentary narrated by Peter Fonda about the larger-than-life film mogul.
