Good Opening Episode
AmosJAMcLovin9 April 2023
A good introduction to the show, with good pacing and a strong cast.

The episode started and ended strongly with enough of a hook and fitting soundtrack to keep you tuning in.

It's clear from the beginning that our lead characters have some issues but aren't all bad. At least not as bad to the point where we don't want to follow them.

It's cool to see Steven Yeun playing a different type of character and he's one of the main reasons I started watching this show.

I'm not too familiar with the other lead, Ali Wong. So far though, they both do a great job of leading the show and I'm looking forward to watching more.

Revenge is a dish best served hot
Mesina022 May 2023
I can't say this enough that shows need to have a strong start in order to hook it's audience and this first episode does that.

This episode delves deep into it's story and puts us right into the fire. Right off the bat where introduced to these characters but we also get to see their situations that led up to their confrontation. Both their lives are not quite where they want it to be and there just trying to keep their heads above water.

But what I like about this first episode is how it introduces it's story. The show opens up with the road rage incident and that is what triggers everything to happen and we also get an understanding about why they acted the way they did which puts a lot more meaning toward their actions.

A24 Does it Again!
mattbmeek14 April 2023
Finally something original!!!! Is A24 the lazy studio that knows how to produce original content? My goodness. In a world of do-overs, participation trophies, remakes and plagiarism, Beef is unique. A clear tone, cultural satire, dark humor. And led by two outstanding performances!

As of now I've only seen episode 1. But I'm drawn in. I see myself in the story. Who hasn't had that day where it's just one thing after another. Cut off in traffic, stub your toe, drop and shatter your favorite glass at home. The slow simmer to boil to explosion is played so well by Steven Yeun and Ali Wong. 10/10 would recommend.

Just wanna say Thank You!!

Warning: Spoilers
My first ever comment on IMDb is for the strong opening and ending in this episode! ESPECIALLY my fav song of all time ( the reason by hoobastank) I just dropped tears because I wasn't expecting it to drop out of no where in the perfect timing, You know the feeling when you always hear a sound track on tv and you wish that it was another song from your classic list! Well that made my day.

And I don't know about you but that's why I rated the episode 10/10 even though I still got no idea how will the show go next! And yes that's what this song means to me! They literally brought it back from the dead.

I like the tone but some facts don't add up
MNR87BPF12 August 2023
The only thing I want to say is that Bitcoin never went from 20k to 2k. You could have chosen a fictional thing, but btc just never dropped from 20 to 2. It dropped from 17 to 3 or something, but that took over a year. Kind of a stupid review. But that kind of annoyed me a little. Just never occurred that one day it's 20k and next day it was 2. Therefore I would've chosen something else. Other than that Steven Yeun is great as always. And I get breaking bad vibes. Like a well written thing where everyone is committed. That being said I'm looking forward to what will happen in the future. It made me google when the show takes place. End of 2017 it was around 18k and January 2019 it was around 3.5k. And then it just went parabolic. Just saying. Of course it's a. Risky thing. But again. I would've chosen a fictional thing. Instead of misleading.

At least it's different.
GiraffeDoor20 April 2023
OK, one episode down and first impressions:

They really hit the ground running here. You cannot say they did not make it visually interesting very quicky. It's intriguing, I guess because you can't help asking yourself "what cheesed them off so much?" because there has to be something to make their reactions incredibly disproportionate.

I wonder why they're both Korean Americans...maybe it's just a coincidence but it's mentioned in the script. I dare say it will come up later. Maybe I'm more racially prejudiced than I thought but watching these two people from the same community begin what we all know is going to be a feud of sorts sat with me in a very particular way. I mean if they don't look out for each other, who will? White people? My whole family's white so I like to think I'm an authority on them.

But in all seriousness: after the explosive opening we get to see the wider picture on these two individuals. Their circumstances are very different: one is struggling to earn money which he needs for his family, the other is in money but lives that quiet desperation of the petit-bourgeois suburban house-mother slowly watching her own ambitions not happen.

These are clearly two people who could have thoroughly identified with each other and no, not for their common ethnicity (that's racist) but because they both know life is a struggle ("there's always something") but unfortunate events have pitted them against each other.

I suppose that will be the subtext for the next 9 episodes; they realise they're not so different after all and will be love story of sorts. Not a sexual/romantic love story like Frozen but where it's best if they remain platonic, like Ross and Rachael.

Like Transparent, it's so not a comedy but the tone is consistently comedic. Every scene has a caustic undertone but there is still deep empathy for two deeply unlucky but ultimately not hateable characters.

I don't know if I will continue with this. This one episode was well paced and didn't have anything too painful in it but I might just take the ending of this episode as the closest we will get to a happy ending and leave off.

At the moment I like him more than I like her.

Bad start leaves me not wanting any more.
NothingSacred_com13 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It's a simple and natural premise (if you live in one of the huge cities of Southern California): two people experience road rage and their lives spiral downward from the original incident. Kudos to the series for using so many Asians! And the cinematography and production team do a stellar job, especially with the fabulous car stunts. The lead actors are amazingly capable at wringing every nuance out of the paltry scenes they're given. And that's the problem.

Unfortunately, the script is sub-standard, featuring two completely self-absorbed urban neurotic morons. It's impossible to get past that: the two leads are just lousy, uninteresting, and loathsome characters. Nothing that happens after the characters are established, the vomit-inducing cooing baby talk, the ridiculously pablum-ish doorbell cam scene, even the car chases, can make us care about them in a positive way.

We see an actor binging Burger King from paper bags in long sequences of product placement, and he gags, and then starts to choke. But then it passes, and he goes back to eating. Well, now we know for sure that he deserves to die. His death will benefit all life on Earth.

We see a woman getting a pistol out of a safe and making love to it (ewwwww). Not only is the scene embarrassing to watch, but it's pointless and dull. It only makes us long for her immediate death.

And sadly, the series has nowhere to go from there. Why would we want to watch this show about people we are told to dislike? Are we supposed to cheer for their obvious and inevitable destruction? I won't be watching to find out.

Sorry, great premise wasted on lousy writing is my final word here.

writing this cus of the "postive" reviews..
lahellight-5769725 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I don't understand the "hype" and I am almost convinced most of the positive reviews are bought for or fake...because the show lost me from the 1st episode.

I feel NOTHING for these people. Absolutely NOTHING. Though I am a fan of Steven and Ali,and I will admit, I may have entered this with too much expectations, but I lost any interest i might've had for this series in the opening scene.

In the opening scene, Steven ..silently rages at a cashier..for NO reason.. and then nearly rear ends a car - 100% his fault, and he get angry because the car he almost hit was honking?? The white mercedes (obviously Ali) pulls forward and proceeds to flip him off with a birdie right before exiting the parking lot, and this induces so much anger in steven.. he...chase after it.. nearly causing numerous accidents.. only for this enormous anger to subside..when ali slightly retaliates.

What happened to his rage that built up for no reason to chase after her in accident inducing car-chase.. for nearly 2 mins ??? Remember he was mad, but he's gonna back off now cus she nearly hit his car with her car??

I have ZERO interest in Steven's character at this point. When he enters his apartment/house to introduce us to his game obsessed brother, his unhappy parents who are suffering working for his uncle etc.. I literally DON"T CARE because that opening scene was beyond idiotic, i cant get past it.

I dont want to know anything more about steven's character. I dont care if i dont remember his name. I dont want to watch any further.

Its gets 2 stars for ATTEMPTING to make a series with Steven and Ali - they deserve better and tbf their acting.. was great.i just could not get past that idiotic opening scene.

Maybe there's a good reason for this on later episodes and it all "masterfully" ties everything together - frankly i can't seem to care. Can not watch this at all.
