Van Partible's animated series "Johnny Bravo" debuted on the Cartoon Network on July 14, 1997. It was one of four new shows that Cartoon Network premiered in 1997 and 1998 that served as a declaration for a new creator-forward direction the network was taking. "Johnny Bravo" debuted alongside Genndy Tartakovsky's "Dexter's Laboratory," David Feiss' "Cow and Chicken," and Craig McCracken's "The Powerpuff Girls." In 1999, that lineup would be complemented by "Ed, Edd n Eddy," and "Courage the Cowardly Dog." These shows were all quirky and idiosyncratic and attracted a generation of fans.
"Johnny Bravo" was about a barrel-chested, Elvis-voiced lug who lived with his mother and attempted to find love in the big city. His buffoonery and vanity, however, usually kept him single. Johnny was played by prolific voice actor Jeff Bennett, who has been acting professionally since 1991. Van Partible had been working on a version of the show as early...

22 years ago, Sam Raimi helped prove just how big superhero movies could be with his first "Spider-Man" movie. Starring Tobey Maguire, the film broke box office records and kicked off the biggest individual superhero franchise around. Raimi and Maguire united for two more movies, with 2007's "Spider-Man 3" rounding out the trilogy with mixed results. The original plan was for the two to reunite on a fourth film that never came to pass. Instead, Sony opted to reboot the series with Andrew Garfield headlining "The Amazing Spider-Man" films. But everything old is new again. Recently, talk of "Spider-Man 4" kicked up and, while nothing has been made official, the time feels right. Truthfully, it might be a now or never situation.
To be clear, much of the talk surrounding a proposed "Spider-Man 4" is generated almost entirely from the rumor mill and appears to be based on next to nothing concrete.

The Doctor Who simultaneous global premiere arrives in May, and the episode titles for the season have now been revealed.
In addition, another guest star has been added to the cast. In the Julie Anne Robinson directed Space Babies, Golda Rosheuvel (Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story) joins Doctor Who as Jocelyn.
“It’s been amazing to see the whole world appreciate Golda’s talents, because of Bridgerton, and it’s been an absolute joy to invite her to Cardiff to help launch Ncuti and Millie’s first season,” said Russell T Davies, the Doctor Who showrunner.
New episodes will debut weekly across BBC iPlayer, BBC One and outside of the UK on Disney+ (where available), with the Steven Moffat-penned adventure Boom up next, followed by 73 Yards, Dot and Bubble, Rogue, and a two-part finale spread across two weeks, The Legend of Ruby Sunday and Empire of Death.

Coleman Hough, who received solo screenplay credit on the quirky Steven Soderbergh-directed improvisational films Full Frontal and Bubble, has died. She was 62.
Hough died Feb. 24 at the Actors Fund Home in Englewood, New Jersey, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease, her friend Jennifer Romine told The Hollywood Reporter. She was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s when she was 42.
Full Frontal (2002), set in Hollywood and a film within a film, shot in 18 days using a consumer-grade digital camera and was the first produced screenplay by playwright and poet Hough.
Featuring Julia Roberts, Catherine Keener, David Hyde Pierce, Blair Underwood, David Duchovny and Jeff Garlin as a Harvey Weinstein type, it marked an extreme change of pace for Soderbergh, who was coming off Erin Brockovich (2000), an Oscar win for Traffic (2000) and Ocean’s Eleven (2001).

Janice Burgess, who as an executive, producer or creator had a hand in some of the most seminal Nickelodeon animated series of the past 20 years, died Saturday in Manhattan, according to the New York Times. She was 72.
In 1998, Burgess created the first iteration of what would eventually become The Backyardigans, a fanciful show where five animal neighbors in a communal backyard imagine new settings and adventures. The first season of 20 episodes aired in 2004, with critics praising its appeal for both kids and parents as well as its “artistic exactitude” when portraying different genres and setting.
The series ran for four seasons on Nick Jr. (through 2013) with Burgess taking home the Emmy for Outstanding Special Class Animated Program in 2008. During that time, she also worked as the story editor for Nickelodeon’s revival of Winx Club and is credited as a writer on Bubble Guppies.

The Beanie Bubble is about the Beanie Baby craze of the 1990s and the drama behind the scenes. Zach Galifianakis plays Ty Warner, the founder of the toy line. Elizabeth Banks, Sarah Snook and Geraldine Viswanathan play the three women in Warner’s life who found each other, and success, in the company. Ok Go singer Damian Kulash directed with his wife, screenwriter Kristin Gore.
Kulash said he hoped people couldn’t tell where the movie’s “needle drops” of archival music ended and his original score, with Nathan Barr, began. The film includes songs by The Cure, Inxs, The Cranberries, Queen and more.
“The job of the score was not to offset that stuff but rather to make it unclear when you’re in a pop song and when you’re not,” Kulash said.

It’s been so long since Steven Soderbergh announced his recut of Kafka––so long since the thing even premiered at TIFF––that one could assume it was no longer in play. But reemergence, it seems, is in store: Indiewire have announced the U.S. premiere of his new edition, Mr. Kneff, will occur at Nitehawk’s Prospect Park location on November 9, with a complimentary cocktail made from Soderbergh’s Signani 63 offered. Tickets are now on-sale.
The official synopsis is scant: “A writer guy in 1919 Prague uses his dead-end job as inspiration for his fantastical fiction.” But the extent of Soderbergh’s revision is huge: the movie’s lost 20 minutes and, what’s more, all dialogue––silent-movie accompaniment includes an instrumental of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.”
If you (like me) aren’t in New York on November 9, it’s comfort to know Nitehawk’s premiere shouldn’t be the end of the road.

As of today, October 13, 2023, Microsoft has officially completed its nearly $70 billion acquisition of publisher Activision Blizzard. Though the two sides reportedly agreed to an acquisition way back in January 2022, the deal has been modified, scrutinized, and debated by a number of regulatory bodies (not to mention other gamers) since then. Following an exhaustive process that required the Microsoft team to make quite a few concessions, the deal is finally complete.
There is so much to say about this deal, and we hope to be able to share much of that information with you in the coming days and weeks. However, you’re not alone if the first question that popped into your mind is “What games and franchises do Microsoft and Xbox now control as part of the Activision Blizzard deal?

Welcome to Kino Laika: Aki Kaurismäki and Mika Lätti’s cinema in Karkkila, an hour away from Helsinki. A place where love for movies – and dogs – meets ghosts of cinema’s past.
“One time, I had a 35mm copy of the Lumière brothers’ film ‘Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat.’ I lent it to some cinema and it never came back. And now, I have forgotten which cinema it was,” recalls Kaurismäki, who, like Lätti, has been a resident of Karkkila, a modest town of 9,000, for decades now.
“I have lived here for 38 years and I like it a lot, but we never had a cinema here before. To see movies, local people had to travel to the next town or even Helsinki. Not anymore. It’s wonderful to offer them this chance,” he adds.
“Karkkila has been a good place for us both and we wanted to give something back to this town.

Plot: Why did the world suddenly treat stuffed animals like gold? Ty Warner was a frustrated toy salesman until his collaboration with three women grew his masterstroke of an idea into the biggest toy craze in history. “The Beanie Bubble” is an inventive story about what and who we value, and the unsung heroes whose names didn’t appear on the heart-shaped tag.
Review: Everyone likely knows what a Beanie Baby is. The tiny plush toys were an insane fad in the 1990s, predating Crypto and NFTs by decades. But, unlike many fads, Beanie Babies became a lucrative financial market during the early days of the World Wide Web and marketplaces like eBay. While the crash reduced toys valued at thousands of dollars to just pennies, the toy’s creator, Ty Warner, remained a multi-millionaire. Despite a felony tax conviction, Warner remains extremely wealthy thanks to his revolutionized plush idea.

Casey will be back on Chicago Fire very soon.
According to Variety, Jesse Spencer has closed a deal to return to the NBC drama.
It will be a one-episode guest-starring role on Chicago Fire Season 11 Episode 18.

"And so in 2023, we will raise prices both for Paramount Plus Premium and Essential, both in the U.S., and select international markets."
The price hike will coincide with the rebrand on the horizon, which finds Paramount+ becoming Paramount+ with Showtime, meaning that subscribers on the premium...

The ice storm wasn't the only source of cold.
The slick roads and dangerous conditions threw the hospital back into the supply crisis it had dealt with before Dayton's arrival, but there was an efficiency expert on hand this time.
On Chicago Med Season 8 Episode 13, Grace tried to make decisions devoid of human emotion, only to succumb to her empathy for a little boy. But her new attitude didn't last long, leaving me to wonder what kind of doctor she was.
Storm-related crises have become standard on medical dramas. Typically, doctors are stuck in a storm or have to treat people in the middle of harsh conditions.
We had some of those tired old tropes, but they were kept to a minimum. For the most part, the storm caused problems within the hospital, and we even had room for Archer to have a non-storm-related conflict with his newly freed son.

Mumbai, Feb 2 (Ians) Actor-producer Arbaaz Khan is all set to take us on a nostalgia trip with his upcoming six-part chat series titled ‘The Invincible’. The first episode will feature his father and veteran screenwriter Salim Khan.
The actor will be hosting the evergreen stars of Hindi cinema and take us down memory lane. The show stars Salim Khan, Javed Akhtar, Helen, Waheeda Rahman, Shatrughan Sinha and Mahesh Bhatt.
Talking about ‘The Invincibles’, Arbaaz says, “Cinema is evergreen and I wanted to create a series that evoke nostalgia. Quite often, I have this fear that the stories we’ve grown up listening to will get lost if we don’t document them.”
He added: “This is my attempt at playing a biographer for an industry that I have seen up closely. I want to chronicle the legendary stories and celebrate the people who’ve created gold in the process.”

Global sales shingle The Yellow Affair has acquired world rights to the modern love story “Power of Love” by German helmer Jonas Rothlaender, whose breakthrough movie “Fado” nabbed a Silver Hugo at Chicago and a German Film Critics’ for best feature debut.
Julia M. Müller and Luisa Leopold are producing for Germany’s StickUp Filmproduktion, in co-production with Misha Jaari and Mark Lwoff of Finland’s Bufo (“The Gravedigger’s Wife”).
The director’s sophomore feature film turns on power dynamics in a couple and the social norms expected of a male/female relationship.
Toplining the feature are Saara Kotkaniemi and Nicola Perot as Saara and Robert, both in their 30s, who set off on an extensive summer holiday in the Finnish archipelago.
Their love is a constant play with gender role clichés, yet behind the unconventional façade, they struggle with their own insecurities. Stuck on the island and influenced by its rough nature,...

At the end of 2011, the number of digital projectors in movie theaters officially surpassed the number of analog film projectors. This was the final step in a years-long technological revolution that had been raging for the better part of a decade. In the early 2000s, digital film -- while looking grainy and amateurish at the time -- was touted as the Next Big Thing, and many companies began to slowly make the shift. Anyone who saw "Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones" in theaters likely recalls the grainy, dim quality of digital projection at the time.
In Christopher Keneally's 2012 documentary film "Side by Side," Keanu Reeves interviews a spate of experienced filmmakers on the general state of film technology, and many of them, perhaps surprisingly, came down in favor of digital photography. David Lynch declared that film was a dinosaur. It looked beautiful but moved too slowly...

As we have recently seen in the Netflix’s “Bubble”, the whole concept of parkour can be implemented in anime in the most impressive fashion. Yusuke Gonji tries to do the same in his 5-minute animation short, in a whole different approach however.
“Goodness” is screening at ShortShorts
Ethan is a young man who lives on the top of a small village built on a hillside by the sea. As the story begins, he is about to have a date with a girl, which is why he is looking repeatedly at his alarm clock, as he cannot wait for the time. Unfortunately, he realizes that the device is broken, and that he is actually 20 minutes late. In his urge to reach his destination as fast as possible, he starts jumping from the top of the town towards the bottom, where the date is, from one roof to another, in the...

This Vampire in the Garden review contains no spoilers.
Fair warning: there’s a lot more gore than gardening in Netflix’s newest anime, Vampire in the Garden. It’s a fantastic story about Momo and Fine, a human/vampire duo escaping the brutal war between their species. Set in the remnants of an unnamed but unmistakably post-Soviet country, their journey is as much about the horrors of war as it is about the beauty of music. And with the creative minds of Studio Wit at the helm, the animation is appropriately top-notch and the story delivers a heartfelt anti-war message in its brief five-episode season.
Momo is a low-ranking soldier in humanity’s last army, but she is unwilling and unable to kill her enemies in combat. Meanwhile, Fine is the queen of the vampires, but refuses to drink blood. The vampires live opulently in aristocratic splendor, while the...

Considering the quality of series Wit Studio has produced during the last few years, with “Attack on Titan”, “Vinland Saga” and “Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song” being among the best we have seen lately, the new movie they produced was bound to garner attention before its release, even more so since the producers decided to premiere it in Berlin before they screen it on Netflix, ahead of its theatrical opening in Japan this May. Let us see how they fared.
Borrowing from “The Little Mermaid”, parkour, and the dystopian aspect so frequently presented in anime, the story takes place in a Tokyo that is almost completely uninhabitable, after the world was overcome by bubbles that came from the sky and eventually exploded, causing mass destruction. The only people who still live there, despite the law that forbids them, are children who were orphaned by the tragedy, who now survive by scavenging...

Photo: ‘Bubble’ What Sounds Like a Dream Team on Paper I was somewhat excited for ‘Bubble’, leading up to its Netflix premiere. While animated features generally look better than their TV counterparts, few in recent years can claim to be as visually dazzling as ‘Bubble’, nor can they claim to have such sizable talent at the helm. Director Tetsuro Araki is most known for his work on the mind-bogglingly successful ‘Attack on Titan’ anime, as well as ‘Death Note’, and while I do have my issues with ‘Attack on Titan’, there’s little doubt that the cat-and-mouse game at the heart of ‘Death Note’ was elevated by the flamboyant direction. ‘Bubble’ is Araki’s first feature film that isn’t a recap or based on an anime — although, as I’ll explain later, it’s not a strictly original story. Ever since it jumped on the scene with "Devilman Crybaby," Netflix has become one of the strongest anime distributors in the West, and the only real competition to Crunchyroll since Funimation essentially shut down.
Since then, we've had some miraculous license acquisitions like "Neon Genesis Evangelion," as well as truly unique originals like "Kotaro Lives Alone" and "Great Pretender." The streamer's latest, an anime original movie titled "Bubble," is a fresh new take on both "The Little Mermaid" and sports anime which boasts an impressive crew made up mostly of the same people that made "Attack on Titan"...

Like its namesake, the Netflix film Bubble is as beautiful as it is brief, with a deceptively complex story to boot. But bubbles aren’t just beautiful for Hibiki, a freerunner living in the bubble-infested and partially sunken remnants of Tokyo, they’re where all his troubles began. Hibiki’s high-flying journey of self-discovery is crafted by writer Gen Urobuchi (Madoka Magica), designed by Takeshi Obata, and brought to life by director Tetsuro Araki (Attack on Titan). The three creative giants synthesize their distinct artistic perspectives into a thrilling and unexpectedly heartfelt retelling of, believe it or not, Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid.
Unlike the entirety of the trio’s famous works, Bubble is decidedly appropriate for all ages. Kids will marvel at the gorgeous visuals and thrilling parkour races while big-brain-anime-enjoyers will appreciate its heady themes and also marvel at the gorgeous visuals. The action centers around...

Chris Rock was supposed to deliver the big laugh, not the big slap, but to comedy practitioners the Oscars debacle seemed an appropriate metaphor for the state of their craft.
“The 1960s would have been easier to survive with a laugh track,” Lenny Bruce once explained, and his sardonic observation would apply today.
Two shows this week from prolific producers Paul Feig and Judd Apatow underscore the problems of the moment. The Minx from Feig is about a feminist trying to rationalize the start of a new sex magazine; In The Bubble, Apatow’s focus, centers on a band of stranded actors attempting to exploit their quarantine into a hit movie.
Feig and Apatow, while productive as manufacturers, concede their craft is at “an odd place,” in Feig’s words. Their styles are a study in contrast: In personal conversation Apatow wears the wary look of the veteran standup who’s always wondering,...

If and when the Covid-19 pandemic fully ceases, one of the relics from this bizarre time (beyond the face masks) will be the Covid movie. To keep the content flowing during the height of the pandemic, studios pushed smaller pictures that had a limited cast and limited locations into production. Movies like Locked Down, Malcom and Marie, The Guilty, and Kimi, whether explicitly about our current situation or not, made what they could of a bad situation and told smaller scale stories to various degrees of success. It’s become something of its own genre.
Judd Apatow’s latest comedy for Netflix, The Bubble, is not only another example of this trend, but it also uses the realities of making a movie during quarantine as a means of showbiz satire. After a banner 2021 for high-end genre films, industry vets are hopeful that the fantastic can resurrect the corpse of pre-covid theatrical distribution.
As bolts of lightning reanimated the body of Frankenstein’s monster, Julia Ducournau’s “Titane,” which turned heads when it took the Palme d’Or at Cannes, and Sundance Grand Jury prize-winner “Nanny,” a supernatural tale from director Nikyatu Jusu, have revitalized the festival scene.
While “Nanny” may have been the jewel in the genre crown at Sundance, the influence that genre cinema held over 2022’s first major festival was wide-ranging and undeniable. Chloe Okuno’s psychological thriller “Watcher” impressed — segueing into several sales deals — as did Hanna Bergholm’s psycho-horror feature “Hatching,” sold by Wild Bunch and Charades-sold Spanish standout “Piggy,” the follow-up to Carlota Pereda’s 2019 Spanish Academy Award-winner “Cerdita.”

Even as it celebrates its 27 Oscar nominations this week, Netflix unveiled its mega-slate of 86 titles for 2022. That’s far more than any traditional studio this year.
Thus we learned that a “sea beast” is about to devour a stowaway, 16 nuclear missiles are set to be launched, a female assassin will come out of hiding and even Marilyn Monroe will make a comeback — well, almost.
If you are intrigued by these one-liners, then stay tuned because, as Charlize Theron warns us, “Every night is Netflix movie night.” Translation: Netflix has lavished $17 billion to deliver the goods to its 222 million subscribers – and also raised their fees – so they’d better pay attention.
Over the years, the identity of Hollywood studios has been keyed to their slates: Warners’ noirish gangster films, MGM’s glitzy musicals, etc. If a slate touches all the bases, however, will that guarantee a home run?

For a couple of decades now, Steven Soderbergh’s “little” movies — the lo-fi dramas, often quirky thrillers, that he makes as palate cleansers in between his higher profile projects — have been a pleasurably idiosyncratic, off-on-his-own-cloud thing. Some of them are good (like “Bubble” and “Side Effects”), some are meh (like “Haywire”), and one is great (“The Girlfriend Experience”); none of them make much of an impact in the marketplace. Yet you feel the pulse of filmmaking fervor in them. You could say they’re Soderbergh’s protest against blockbusterization, a way of reminding his audience, and maybe himself, that a few simple elements — story, actors, camera angles — can still add up to what a movie is. Only now, at a time of slow-motion crisis in the industry (will audiences come back to theaters?) and seriously over-inflated budgets, Soderbergh’s latest little movie, the nimble and sinister cyber-age corporate thriller “Kimi,...

Upwards of 85 new films will launch (or have already arrived) on Netflix this year.
