It's all tied up really well.

Larry enters his studio to find that Ruth is missing. Fletcher demands the key in order to release Ruth, bizarrely when Larry hands the key over Fletcher discards it. Larry believes the key held a code. Inspector Hyde encourages Larry to visit Andy Wilson, lie and say that Fletcher is in custody, and get the story out of him. Ruth is also put to work, the pair manage to draw the real killer to show their hand.

I am always so impressed by Francis Durbridge's writing, and impressed most of all by the way in which all plot elements are knitted together, things that seem small, inconsequential are neatly fitted together. It's such a satisfying conclusion, you find yourself wondering 'why didn't I think of that?' It's superbly acted once again, at last we get to see Nigel Hawthorne show some villainy, it's a great performance. I didn't see the conclusion coming.
