Suspense Movies

When one looks at the lesser known work of the Lumieres' anonymous team of cameramen, one is struck by the fact that they took just as much care on these as the better known work. There is still the carefully chosen vantage point for traffic around one end of a suspension bridge in Budapest. There are still the conflicting lines of movement -- the vehicles and people walking across the bridge in both directions and people walking past the bridge, from the left edge of the frame to the right and vice versa.

As an American, as a New Yorker, it is obvious to me why I find their view of the Brooklyn Bridge more accessible -- and also their views of various Parisian landmarks. However, this is certainly competently executed.

Budapest, pont suspendu (1896)

In 1896 the Lumiere Brothers took their show on the road. They sent their cameras out to various locations and made actuality films, which were basically just movies that captured a part of life as it was then. Here is another one that was set in Budapest and we basically have the camera on a street where we see what is going on. In all reality there's not too much that's going on because the street itself just doesn't have too much going on it. We do get to see a couple horse- drawn carriages but outside of this there's not much to see. The cameraman certainly should have picked a busier street.
