Italian director, illustrator and general renaissance man Stefano Bessoni has appeared in these pages many times before and he returns today with a teaser for a new short film project titled Gallows Songs. Employing what looks to be a great deal of stop motion animation, the film is a sort-of spin off to his previous work Krokodyle and based on the poems by Christian Morgenstern. With macabre tinged stop motion making a big time comeback in recent days he seems to be arriving on the scene at a good time and the quality of the work is remarkable. The 2011 Sitges Film Festival has concluded its competition portion and announced awards in more categories than we've seen at any other fest. The biggest winners are Kevin Smith's Red State and Joe Cornish's Attack the Block, but several other films we've been closely watching here on Dread scored victories as well, including Kill List, Livid, The Divide, The Woman, Bellflower, Hell, and Detention.

One of the most distinct visual stylists in Europe today, Stefano Bessoni has been hard at work on his independent feature Krokodyle for quite some time now and with production wrapping up he has just sent us a block of stills showcasing the creatures of his film to go along with the earlier behind the scenes shots. These new images come from a stop-motion animated sequence of the picture and they're pretty fantastic stuff. Here's the official synopsis for the film:
Kaspar is a young filmmaker willing to develop his projects in cinema.
