New work from Thomas Waites awaits you!
prozacfan30 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
With "Target", director Thomas G. Waites gives us the sometimes funny, sometimes sordid tale of Nick and Laura, a married couple living in a scenic waterside community in New Jersey (the name of which is a humorous jab at the name of the real-life filming location). Nick, an architect by profession, is consumed by his fetishistic desire to witness his wife having sex with another man. Nick even later suggests a suitable target that he believes she may have innocently flirted with on occasion. Laura is far less keen on the idea but eager to please her husband.

Enter Chip, a potential lover for Laura who is closer to Laura's age than Nick and, as it will turn out, a more physically satisfying lover than Nick. Nick is intrigued and perhaps threatened by this revelation. Despite some insecurity surfacing now and again, Chip inserts himself into their lives and preys upon the both of them in various ways, down to the point of making controlling demands regarding his participation in Nick's fantasies for his wife. Nick willingly obliges. A Heironymus Bosch painting on the wall of their house catches Chip's eye. The piece is titled "Hell", and suggests to the film's viewers that there may be something unsettling about this unconventional arrangement.

Offering more detail at this point would spoil the fun. As further events unfold we are treated to doses of sex, unexpected violence, betrayal, a rather humorous mishap concerning a misfired gun, and some extra characters appearing in the latter half of the film, at least one of whom might tug at the already precarious tightrope walk between control and chaos, between the familiar and the taboo, and along the often broken glass-laden path of revealed weaknesses. It doesn't help architect Nick that he can be seen as the "architect" of his own disruptive change. I'll leave it to you, dear reader, to discern for yourself who and how many "targets" get hit.

In the end the "Hell" painting is gone, perhaps a metaphor for how certain characters' heightened self-inflicted misery has now given way to more honest self-realization, in spite of a new and different kind of pain it might bring.

There are certainly layers to this triangle of love mixed with lust and emotional volatility. Screenwriter Waites, himself a veteran theater actor, has structured this tale much as would be expected if it were a stage play. It is dialogue-heavy, places emphasis on characterization as much as plot, and lends itself to post-viewing discussion. So dive in.

Worth a look, folks!

Careful what you wish for!

Warning: Spoilers
Quirky. Funny. Bonkers. Target is like that fantasy you might have of what a fantasy might be. But probably best to keep it to yourself. Maybe the essence of fantasy is that they're not meant to come true? In this case, Nick screwed everything up by sharing his fantasy and trying to foist it on others. Unlike when it's in his head, when he says it out loud, he can no longer control the outcome. Nick has a movie-perfect life, bland middle age guy gets beautiful young wife and nice house. Clearly a "winner." But then he opens his mouth and gets shot in the ass. (Seriously.) He shares his fantasy and tries really hard to orchestrate it, but that's not how real life works. It's also not how absurdist, dark comedy life works. You feel Nick's giddiness. He explains what he wants and begs for his wishes to come true with his very reluctant wife Laura and she finally agrees. But the harder Nick tries to orchestrate his fantasy, the more bonkers it gets. The viewer gets an awkward front row seat while Nick learns his lesson.

Unusual and Compelling Film
xdrdrfx24 April 2023
This film adopts a very real, believable tone and at the same time contains sort of parallel levels of surreal comedy, some brutal (though short lived) violence, intense erotic underlying feel - just an odd, but very effective collection of moods. The acting is uniformly excellent, as is the writing and direction, with the two leads delivering outstanding performances and some of the minor characters fleshing (no pun) things out in a more extreme fashion. The music is terrific too, and the film contains a number of great songs written by the director Thomas G. Waites - himself a veteran actor and acting teacher. Not for the faint of heart perhaps, but everyone else should love this film as much as I did.

A romp! Fun Flick!
gsgfwthm19 April 2023
I was in the mood for some laughs. The film image caught my attention as did the description. I was so happy I picked it. Perfect film to match my mood. A couple of friends watched too and not only did we laugh but when it ended we talked about it over drinks for a while. Thought provoking fun. The acting is fantastic- the characters felt real and honest. The director got great performances. I didn't like all of the characters but I did feel connected to them. This is a great film to watch with others and discuss afterwards. Expect a lively conversation! Oh, and the original music is awesome. I've got to track it down and listen again! Recommend!

must watch!

Loved it! We picked this movie as our weekly date night watch and honestly can't recommend it enough. We had a good laugh and we were so drawn into the drama that we didn't even notice the time go by. Acting is superb and very good directing you can tell that the casting did an amazing job selecting each actor for its character. This move has good pasting and will keep you guessing what could even happen next. It's funny, shocking, full of drama, has good amount of spicy moments and over all very entertaining. It's definitely one of those movies I'll keep rewatching over and over, this would be a great girls night watch ;)

Hilarious and unexpected.
hilaryawells2 July 2023
I didn't know what to expect when one of my friends recommended this to me. It begins as a romantic comedy and devolved into a completely different romp. There are many genuinely laugh out loud moments and the actors ,none of whom I was aware of before, carry of their roles perfectly. It was a friend who initially watched it as he admired the director Thomas Waites and his previous acting roles in films such The Thing and originally I was dubious as that is not my type of movie. Highly recommend this original film to anyone who wants to watch something intelligent and thought provoking rather than yet another superhero film.

Unique relationships create interesting journey
jamesfmotsinger6 May 2023
What a fun journey through a unusual and unique twist. Newcomer Jam Murphy is genuine and fun in her portrayal. The cast nails it. I hope this romp takes off and gets noticed. Things move in unexpected ways and takes you on a journey that many of us fantasize about. It moves smoothly and keeps the audience attention throughout. Which is always hard to do. Not sure how to reach out to a larger audience but being on Apple TV is a plus. I think young couples would find this fun and interesting. Older folk may not understand the unique storyline. But in days the Broadway shows like Rent this will find an audience.

Awesome!
svenjastein21 August 2023
I got this movie recommended and it was such a fun ride with funny jokes and amazing actors!

The scenes were all interesting and I got really invested into the characters. My favorite part was definitely the second half of the movie where the characters relationships were more developed.

I've had such a good time watching it with my partner and we couldn't stop laughing at the funny scenes!

I'd definitely recommend everyone watching this movie who wants to have a lighthearted fun time.

Normally I am not a big fan when it comes to erotic movies but this one was as really fun and amazingly directed!

Great plot, fun to watch!
kamallon6 May 2023
I really enjoyed this film! It has both comedy and drama, with twist and turns, and a very thought provoking storyline written and directed by Thomas G. Waites. Kinky and sexy in a way that that sparks curiosity. Many surprising plot twists that you don't see coming. Really keeps you hooked! The acting is great, I especially enjoyed Jam Murphy, Tony Daniels and Nick Gregory. The soundtrack is awesome, the original music by Thomas G. Waited and Tony Daniels is fantastic. Well written, acted and directed, it's a fun movie, very entertaining! I can't wait to watch again with friends. We'll have lots to talk about!

Hard to please usually but this really did hit the spot!
shaunmcclure-075332 July 2023
A friend of mine recommended this movie to me and I wasn't quite sure what to expect in terms of romantic comedy... or crime film? Its actually both and neither! Its hard to explain without ruining the film for people reading this.

It's one of the few films this year that I will pass on a recommendation. Its both funny, slightly cynical (in a good way) and satirical all at once. The comedy isn't too "in your face" and it's very light hearted with a bit of a dark humour under tone, which suites my English demeanour quite a bit. We love those subtle twists!

We both enjoyed it - and that's what you want in a movie!

Its not often I re-recommend a movie that people tell me to watch as often they have bad judgement - but I'll give you this Kevin - This is the guy that said the female GhostBusters movie was good right?

-you suggested correct tonight!
