Pick your partner carefully

5 minutes in and this is tough to watch. Shes not interacting with engaging dialogue or responses. Its almost unbearable. Luckily, Will Arnette carries it. Its almost like Annie isnt in on the joke or aware its supposed to be funny. I understand she doesnt have a script, but that doesnt excuse missing the whole concept of "funny" and improv. She plays in a sitcom, guess i just expected more. Will seems to be spoon feeding her opportunities to be funny and literally has to say "i am trying to help you" lol which i feel like he honestly meant because she was playing the role too deadpan. Unfortunately, Annie is missing the mark this episode. Netflix played it smart to make this 4th episode and not 1st or 2nd in the series.

Edit: updated from a 5 to 7 after watching the whole British series for reference. I give her a little more credit and though she didnt seem to have as much fun in a comedic sense, she did maybe do the best at realizing clues. Maybe took the detective role too serious and could've maybe let loose some.

Had its moments

This episode wasn't as strong as some of the others, as Annie was mostly just going along with the scenes but not adding a ton to it. The scene where she's in the wig and does the voice was very funny though, so she strikes me as an actor who needs a scenario/character to really shine. Still fun stuff but not a top episode.

Decent

Some funny moments, especially with Will Arnett. Pretty much just less funny than the previous episodes and a couple just unfunny moments. I think the improv can kinda work against itself.

Annie!!! <3

The fact that she is clearly not an improver actually makes this one of my favourite episodes. She is along for a ride she had no idea how she got on and all of her reactions are so genuine. I loved this episode!

There are always risks with improv

It's pretty clear that Annie Murphy wasn't feeling it. It seemed as though she was fully invested in the puzzle and completely forgot that there was improv/comedy going on. This episode has some funny moments but definitely didn't land the way others did.

Annie was hilarious and the episode was as well.

First off if you think anything is shot using film you are literally living in the past. Now that's out of the way this episode is one of the better ones and Annie does a great job. Funny throughout and the undercover segment was top notch.

Oh no

They need to pick actors and actresses who some background in improv and are naturally funny. Annie Murphy is talented as an actress I'm sure and she's great in Schitts Creek... but her improv is terrible. Disappointing episode. She didn't even try.

Murderville S1 E4 "Murder By Soup"

My wife refers to this as "train wreck humor". This is the kind of comedy where you laugh and shake your head at the same time.

8-stars. Everything starts with an 8-star rating.

That murder board looks to be quite the mess, Senior Detective Terry Seattle.

"Sometimes a donut is just a donut, Terry".

We really think that the opening tests are not quite fair. Not at all.

Annie looks like she is, like, 1000% paying attention.

Our cats drink like that; should we be worried? They haven't been to Columbia, though. Not that we're aware of.

Worst food fight, ever.

Annie. That is the most pornographic stick figure that I've ever seen in kindergarten. And I've been to kindergarten a lot. And Terry? Have you actually passed the psychopath test? Or failed it? What ever.

How did she grow that moustache so fast? NO. The earpiece doesn't work.

"I just thought of two things your mom likes".

Yes! We solved another murder! We are 3 for 4.

Painful Episode, Had to Turn Off.
AttorneyJenn5 February 2022
We were so excited to see cutie Annie but she just sat on a bump on a log. Or, if you prefer, a deer in headlights. She was just wide eyed, terrified and frozen. Poor Wil really worked his butt off trying to help her but his efforts were to no avail.

It's the only episode we had to turn off because it was too painful to watch.

Just because you're a name doesn't mean you're a fit

I'm a big fan of Annie Murphy but...yikes.

No comedic timing, just not someone suited to improv, apparently.

That wouldn't be so bad, except that Annie seemed to be truly upset at times, like she just wasn't into it.

Maybe cast people who are "into" improv for an improv show?

Sad

Wow. That ep was terrible...I wonder what Annie said to her agent after that! She looked terrified and was unable to improv at all. Will was working hard to get her involved but she played it too straight and gave nods and one word answers. Maybe next time.

I feel like I could've done better
AlbertsTaylor22 June 2023
I've took a few improv classes just for fun and one thing the instructor mentioned that a rule to make a scene happen is to fully go along with it.. always. It is a performance let's remember.

I had to look up Annie Murphy and realized she had won an Emmy for a well received comedy show, so I was interested in this episode. Unfortunately, I feel like maybe she thought she won a prize if she cracked the case. Honestly, it was hard to watch at times when Will would throw lines at her and she wouldn't bite. Almost like she was annoyed with her choice to be on the show. Kumail n Conan both pretty much did all the ridiculous things Will set up for them and it paid off. Even Marshawn lynch, who I don't think has too much improv acting under his belt, did a lot better of a job with this than her. Skip this one probably ..

Who's this?
blue_wolverine4 February 2022
Never heard of her and I can see why. Without a script she's complete garbage. This episode was boring AF and a waste of film. Good thing it wasn't the opening episode or I wouldn't have watched any others.
