Entertaining, cringe at times
katanalilli18 June 2022
I like the show, it's versatile, you learn about ingredients and meals of the whole world. That being said, Mark Dacascos is hardly bearable. I need to skip his parts cringing at his behaviour. No idea who thought that would be funny.

Otherwise: the judges know their stuff, the music is a little exhausting, the contestants are interesting and the food seems delicious.

Alton Brown is the star
robertsig20 June 2022
First thing first - Alton Brown is a God among men. I've loved everything he did on Food TV, and his stint here on Netflix isn't any different. He's a walking encyclopedia of food.

Perhaps because of that, Kristen Kish pales by comparison. She seems out of her depth. I'm not sure she's up to the level of Alton or even the other judges to be on this show. Overall, I like it as much as the other Iron Chef shows. Very entertaining and educational as well.

It's OK, Room to Improve Though
Backwards71016 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It's not the original so no point in comparing.

The chairman's antics/animated movements are a little over the top and it feels almost cartoonish at times.

I skipped the Inon Chef vs Iron Chef episode because I have no interest in seeing the Iron Chefs battle each other.... maybe if this was a longer season or was already a few seasons in.

The season is short.

The finale was 5 vs 3 so I honestly didn't expect the challenger to have a chance... Each Iron Check could focus on one dish where the challenger had to spread their attention over several dishes. The challenge itself is to be able to outperform and Iron Chef... add to it a numbers advantage and it just doesn't evoke that feeling of watching a winnable struggle.

Loved the pace of the show and the special guest judge each episode. The hosts were great and had charisma so I enjoyed watching and never really felt a lull.

I'd like to see another season and hopefully it improves.

No reverence for the iron chefs makes a boring setting
gjen-6302815 June 2022
It's as if the producers never watched the original. The hook of the originals was that the challengers were portrayed as David vs Goliath. There's nothing Goliath or godlike about the iron chefs. It's a court with no kings or queens, and too many jesters.

Shows need to evolve
mikemckinzie18 June 2022
When Iron Chef started in Japan, back in the 1990's, it was more of a "David and Goliath" type of show. But just as all long running shows need to evolve to be relevant, Iron Chef has evolved to more of an "Achilles vs. Hector" or "Batman vs. Superman!' Think of it this way, we don't want a Super Bowl of the worst in the NFL vs. The best in the NFL. All of the episodes were fun and exciting to watch. I think the Live Sturgeon episode was the best, it was very intense and a close score. And the Finale was also entertaining! Disclosure: I HATE to cook, but I do love good food. And every dish that I saw looked absolutely stunning. I would change one thing, never have a guest judge who is still learning how to make toast. Make the guest judge as least someone who knows how much work/experience/art goes into the dishes that were made. I hope Netflix makes a Season 2 of this new take on Iron Chef.

Just OK, but frustrating at times
strayalleycatzz28 June 2022
I don't like the addition of Kristen, should be Alton as the host. Mark Dascascos is more annoying if that's possible. Did anyone pick up on the new buzz word of Unctuous, totally used in the wrong context, means excessively or ingratiatingly flattering; oily. I've seen a few episodes, it's OK, not like ICA.

Iron Chefs compete
jazzykatnature23 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoy the show but I think that the wrong Iron Chef team won on the Iron Chef team challenge. I my mind the team that won didn't show mid-evil times the way they really were. There was no Marscapone cheese in mid-evil times. I feel the team that lost showed mid-evil times in a more renesssiance way.

Can someone explain?
mrazovabarbora17 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Maybe I didn't get rules but I thought that who wins against the iron chef goes to finale and challenges all the iron chefs AND ALSO other contestans who win other battles.

What I wanna say is where is chef Zepeda? She won the chocolate battle...so??

And also the whole finale is weird. Each iron chef has to do only one dish and the contestant has to do five? And defeat everyone? C'mon... How is it even possible to win?

Has tremendous potential
kevinjackrel25 July 2022
Great concept, annoying chairman big deal, I think it's kind of stupid but entertaining. Love the show currently hooked on it. My main issue is that these judges are awful at doing their job and the female co host seems very clueless at times constantly pestering chefs for information that she should know as a host on this very prestigious show. Other than that, I can't complain. I'm have been very enthralled and entertained so far.

A Lot of Familiar Faces
masercot11 August 2022
Most of the people on this show were also on other cooking shows. Alton Brown had a Blue's Clues type cooking show that was kind of fun; Andrew Zimmern had Bizarre Foods; Kristen Kish has her "Fast Foodies"... All of them are personable and fun to watch.

The cooking is shown at a higher level, not recipes but concepts. And, the competition never gets any more heated than "friendly". Yeah, it has its flaws but overall it is a fun watch.

But, I may be a bit prejudiced after seeing the great Danny Trejo as one of the guest judges...

Fun challenges & twists
sisubalan4 August 2022
Actually i enjoyed this more than i enjoyed watching other cooking show. Fun and entertaining challenges & twists. No idea whats happening in the chairman's head since he always seem out of this world, but i really enjoyed hearing those two announcers. Most of the iron chef are really talented. Recommended.

Worth the watch!
zurya2918 June 2022
New format, new Iron chefs, and new judges. A lot of freshness going on and it was very entertaining. The previous series was great, but I really enjoyed this new direction and new perspectives. Really hope this continues beyond a first season!

What's with the jerky cameras? Impossible to watch
Klaaatu19 June 2022
What is with so many American shows that they can't use a camera without purposefully bouncing it around to create tension?

All it does is give me a headache and make it impossible to watch.

Getting past that to actually enjoy the rest of the show was virtually impossible.

Above Average
coles_notes20 June 2022
Iron Chef is back, now on Netflix. I loved Iron Chef America and can say this series is simply a new continuation of that same format. These competition / reality series are all really masterclasses in suspense and editing, but they're still fun. I love watching masters of their craft create, and Alton Brown's commentary is always gold. If you like the originals (excluding Iron Chef USA, no one likes that), then this is just more of what you'd expect.

Great Show, Bad Judge
rynecortez20 June 2022
I liked the original American version & this is a great add on to it. Having Alton & Kristen as hists is a great combo.

The only downside is the female judge Motamed. She is absolutely awful. She constantly talks over others & acts like her opinion is the only valid opinion. It's even worse that she acts like this is her show & she's the star. If Netflix is to renew this show, they need to replace her so there is better chemistry with Andrew Zimmern.

An okay way to spend a too hot Saturday
LauraAnnG19 June 2022
I've been an iron chef fan since the 90s. It's corny and cheesy and usually if nothing else entertaining. I go into it without big expectations.

I do maybe hope to learn a couple of things related to food and cooking. I'm not a serious cook so that is a pretty low bar.

These 8 episodes kept my attention and it was a good way to spend a Saturday where I was stuck inside.

I admit I've always been a bit squeamish about iron chef and the living creatures that are sacrificed on air. There's one scene in this particular series that quite disturbed me. I wish I could unsee it.

The actor who plays The Chairman gets quite annoying. By the 8th episode I was rolling my eyes. On the other hand to two main "hosts" were quite enjoyable.

The "ending" I think was predictable.

I recommend this if you know going in that it's sort of silly. I don't watch other cooking competition shows but expect maybe they are more serious.

Mostly triumphant return
realbeforeeverything22 June 2022
From masterful camera work and joyful over-the-top performance of the Chairman, Iron Chef is back and I am celebrating! I was not the fan of Kristen Kish as a co-host on the first episode because how rigid she was but by episode two, she fully blossomed into a fantastic addition to the energy in the battle stadium, not to mention her impressive knowledge in all matters regarding food. Only complaints are how laughably underqualified the guest judges were and how Iron Chefs felt less like culinary Gods and more or less like an equal to the challengers. If they have hired the true masters of culinary world, this show would have portrayed the epic stories of David versus Goliath that the original series was celebrated for. Overall, it scratched my Iron Chef itch and I am left craving for more.

People are idiots
whiskeymovie7 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
But that's no real surprise. The reasons people are flaming this show are insipid. People have to learn/ acknowledge that this is NOT the Iron Chef that was on the Food Network and review it as such. I loved the old Iron Chef, but I enjoy this one even more. It doesn't take itself as seriously (it IS food after all), and The Chairman cracks me up now.

Like most reviews on IMBD, people are more concerned with nostalgia than what they are actually watching. They tend to forget that what worked 10, 20, 30 years ago isn't what would necessarily work today.

And harkening back to the whole people are idiots thing, I read one review on here condemning the show for being "woke". I guess they think any show that isn't all white is woke. But they're probably unvaccinated and, fingers crossed, will get covid and die. Then there will be a little less stupid in this world. Yay.

Love.it with one caveat
reeniemastrella17 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The whole.chairman, my uncle nonsense is cloying and annoying. I like Mark Dacascos just fine but I have never thought the whole chairman nonsense was necessary. And it makes what is haute cuisine into pandering for viewers.

Another minor annoyance. One episode had two chefs vs Ming Tsai. OK, since Tsai is a culinary legend. But the challengers, Mai Lin and Greg Gordet were both Top Chef contestants. And their sous chef was Jeremy Ford, a Top Chef WINNER! He should have been a competitor, or at least gotten an accolade when his name was mentioned.

On the other hand, I love the level of cooking shown on each episode. The new version is similar to the original, with winning competitors earning a chance to become Iron Chef legends.

The show only narrowly eclipsed by Top Chef, The Great British Menu, and The Final Table (a fantastic 2018 show that should have been renewed.)

worth watching
shirlone24 June 2022
Iron Chef where Chefs around the globe come together to compete for the ultimate knife. All the Chefs that were on this show were amazing and deserved to be on it. Their dishes looked really good and mouth watering. I never watched the original Iron Chef so this program didn't disappoint. I too had a problem with the female judge. I thought she may have been overly critical. If Netflix picks this show up for a season 2 they need to get rid of her. This show is worth your time to watch it.

Iron Chef is back - for better or worse (mostly for the better)
opinionated-alchemist8 August 2022
I have been a fan of Iron Chef. First I have watched the 90's show. Then I just needed to consume the source material - the Japanese show. The 2000's were an up and down - let's hope that Netflix can give us a permanent residence...

Alton Brown is as always great - always quirky and knowledgeable. The new co-host is also great - probably on the same level or even better than Kevin Brauch... Marc Dacascos - he feels a bit like the ballast which nobody wants to let behind. Yes, he is the goofy part of Iron Chef - but I never thought of the connection of him to the franchise- ...there is no martial arts reference in the original Japanese franchise... so....

I think one of the problem of Iron ached America is, that you have to be a culinary insider to really appreciate the show. The Japanese show showed best, how to portrait the "battling challenger the best.

Iron Chef America is doing it - but it doesn't give us the feeling, what is really at stake.

I have been also a bit disappointed by the "hired Iron Chefs". Yes there are well known TV chefs on the helms, but besides of Dominique Kren, nobody really seems to have real "culinary street cred". You can imagine, who is my fav of all Iron Chefs.

Overall, I am happy - happy to have Iron Chef back. Happy that it is not totally misfigured (thank you Alton).

Just get culinary greats there - would love to see Gordon Ramsey and Marco Pierre White and other culinary stars...

so much cringe
natali-8334329 June 2022
5 min in to the first episode im cringing so hard.

Why is Mark Dacascos behaving the way he is? Its really annoying.

He is doing some marshall arts moves, making weird faces, enunciating words unnecessarily and frankly shouting. All this on a cooking show, why?

I had to skip the parts he is in beacuse its really hard to watch. Dont know if all that is meant to be funny, its really not

Who ever thought its a good idea

If not for him its a decent show. That man really needs to calm down.

I love Alton Brown and it is great to see him again. His food knowledge is incredible. I also really like Andrew Zimmern. He is a great balance between the guest judge and Motamed.

You have a Michelin 3 Star chef. Nobody stands a chance. She knows too much and been exposed to higher levels of cooking techniques. Love that she's there though it definitely sets the standard for the other chefs.

Alton and Kristen are fun and funny together. I am guessing that Kristen may be taking over Alton shoes, although I hope they stay together. Love Alton the most!!! They were great team. The chairman was hilarious.
