Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal, known collectively as Rhett & Link, are Renaissance men of YouTube. They’ve entertained audiences with music videos, talk shows, so-bad-they’re-good commercials, and podcast episodes. Now, they’re adding a musical comedy album to their repertoire. It features music from their upcoming YouTube Red series Rhett & Link’s Buddy System, which will premiere on October 19th.
Buddy System will follow Rhett & Link as they hunt down a vengeful ex who has stolen their phone and used it to break into their YouTube channel. As they embark on their trip, they will frequently break into song. The Buddy System album includes seven tracks, including numbers about exercise bikes, power naps, and, fittingly, BFFs.
The forthcoming YouTube Red series and its accompanying album are the latest steps in what has been a long creative journey for Rhett & Link. Their previous foray into the world of long-form programming...

In what may be one of the most ridiculous lawsuits in history, a woman is suing because she went to see Drive and it wasn't enough like Fast and the Furious for her tastes. She's suing over deceptive marketing and hopes to take it class action. Frankly, I'd be suing if it was like Fast and the Furious.
CBS originally exiled How to Be a Gentleman to Saturday nights, but before it even aired in that wasteland the show ceased production and was canceled.
MTV's O Music Awards will be attempting the record for World's Longest Dance Party, and will provide publicity and methods of donation to benefit Glbt groups like Glsen as part of the livestream.

Cher has announced that she's recorded a song written by Lady Gaga and Redone for her new album. Which begs the question: Are people going to now say that Cher is ripping off Madonna?
Speaking of Lady Gaga, her official YouTube channel has been suspended. Evidently, she posted video from a Japanese show she appeared on and they filed a copyright claim. Technically, she was wrong, but it's hard to see who wins from this conflict.
Kate Hudson named her son "Bing." I hope the check from Microsoft keeps her happy for his entire life.
In a move that boggles the mind, the Department of Justice has appealed the injunction halting Don't Ask, Don't Tell, and is demanding the policy be at least temporarily reinstated by this evening.
Charlaine Harris has stated that she is working on the penultimate Sookie Stackhouse novel, meaning she intends to wrap things up at the end of book thirteen.

Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal of Commercial Kings (IFC, Fridays, 10/9c) often do this thing where they'll take a block of speech that sounds far from musical (or rhythmic, for that matter) and squeeze it into a song. Maybe the ultimate example of that is below, in which a Harry Potter love vlog from a self-described "fangirl...with a camera...being an amateur" becomes an emotional goodbye ballad (despite mosquitoes that threaten to take down the entire production)...

Many of TV.s most unforgettable moments and best most awful commercials happened when the TV creative process was commandeered by local businesspeople. These passionate entrepreneurs employ low-budget creativity, and often excessive outrage that sends customers running for their doors. From New York.s fast talking hi-fi king Crazy Eddie and the gravel-voice soft ice cream magnate Tom Carvel to La.s uber-laconic car painting pitchman Earl Scheib, every city in America has its own great local commercials and stars, and they will finally be getting the honor they deserve thanks to IFC.s The LoCos Awards. IFC is launching The LoCos alongside the debut of Rhett & Link: Commercial Kings, an original, ten-part docu-comedy chronicling the offbeat and artsy adventures...

Rhett & Link: Commercial Kings, a new television show premiering tonight on IFC, plots two best friends as they journey across the United States to understand the country--via advertising. Rhett & Link won't be a hyper-intellectual attempt to analyze our highest aspirations and deepest desires as a nation, as most media depictions of glamorous advertising do—from the Hucksters and What Women Want to Mad Men. Quite the opposite. We talk to the men behind the show below. Rhett McLaughlin (left) and Link Neal (right) have one of the most subscribed-to channels on YouTube, where they show their clever commercials, each a viral hit in its own right. Although every ad boasts a different look, the pair deploy the same questionable production values, haphazardly written jingles, ...

Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal are the comedy and online video duo Rhett and Link, responsible for sweet stop-motion shorts, music videos about internet culture, and local public-access-style television commercials, advertising the businesses that would otherwise not be advertised. McLaughlin and Neal’s I Love Local Commercials original web series puts the pair in the position of a kind of pro bono Crispin Porter + Bogusky, traveling across the country to visit small local businesses the advertising industry has overlooked and make for them innovative and often times absurd online video marketing materials. They’re great, right? IFC thinks so, too. Tonight, the cable channel debuts the season premiere of Rhett and Link: Commercial Kings. The television program is a 10-episode “docu-comedy” where cameras follow McLaughlin and Neal as they embark on their journeys to make good commercials for local business using local talent. Some of those local business include...

In the proverbial So-Bad-It's-Good Hall of Fame, a wing must be devoted to the local commercial. Amateurishly shot, oddly cast and often hawking things you never knew you needed (and, even after the commercial has aired, probably still aren't convinced), these things camp up local TV in a distinctly scrappy way (my all-time favorite: Select Dental). A few years ago, YouTube hitmakers Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal hooked up with MicroBilt and began producing commercials for small businesses that would go on to garner millions of views on their YouTube channel. These commercials have all the stiltedness and eccentricity of regular local commercials with an added layer of cleverness (see their Sobering Tattoo Commercial, in which tattoo artists from Austin, Texas' True Blue Tattoo gravely list the repercussions that come from being inked, like, "Elderly women will be afraid of you"). McLaughlin and Neal achieve an impressive balance, teasing out...

We've all seen those local small business commercials -- cheesy jingles, zany owners dressing up and yelling at the camera about why they're the best deal in town. Now we can see how those awesome bits of TV goodness get made.
'Commercial Kings' chronicles the process behind YouTube sensations Rhett and Link's business of making local commercials across the country (premieres Fri., June 24, 10Pm Et on IFC). With a bevy of eclectic clients, the show manages to be even funnier than some of the ads they've become known for.
I caught up with childhood pals Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal to talk about what kind of commercials we'll see made this season on IFC -- including a shuttle for dog, a woman who speaks cat fluently and a war vet-turned-yoga instructor -- and they also shared a hilarious sneak peek of next week's episode.

IFC bagged a great duo for their Friday night lineup: A pair of Southerners, Rhett and Link, who have made hay by filming and producing great local commercials featuring real small business owners. .Rhett & Link: Commercial Kings. is based on their .I Love Local Commercials. series in which they make free ads for small businesses with humor and edge. What you will see in their show is at the end of each episode, the final product of the fruits of their free labor, which is one or two local commercials, and the whole process of how it was made. The two drop in on a business knowing very little to nothing, but then 48 hours...

Though the 4th of July carries with it the monumental legacy of the birth of a nation, making it forever a day of celebration and commemoration throughout America, it is a cold winter Sunday that now carries the flag of the most important date in present-time America. It is a celebration of commerce, influence and the synergy of brand names into the lives of consumers.
There's also a football game going on, for those interested.
On Super Bowl Sunday, advertisers take center stage, in a bloody competition for American attention spans and dollars, both available in shrinking quantities seemingly every year. Even those who don't like football sit down in front of the TV and dare corporations and brand names to win the rights to their laughter and office water cooler chatter the next day, with the implicit, historically-proven promise that their dollars will follow, too.

Sarah Palin wanted to stop off in England and visit Lady Thatcher this summer in honor of Lady Thatcher’s friend, President Ronald Reagan. The Lady’s aides have spoken out about the possibility. “Lady Thatcher will not be seeing Sarah Palin. That would be belittling for Margaret. Sarah Palin is nuts.” I love the British.

I don’t watch Gossip Girl like I used to. For one thing, I just can’t take it any more. For another, the day job keeps me out late most Mondays. But last time I looked, Chace Crawford was no more a “Lead Actor” than Eric was. But that’s how he submitted for the Emmy Awards.
