Bret Easton Ellis has written the novels that have inspired such films as Less Than Zero, American Psycho, The Rules of Attraction, and The Informers, and has written the screenplays for The Canyons, The Curse of Downers Grove, and Smiley Face Killers. Now he’s set to make his feature directorial debut with the horror film Relapse – and Joseph Quinn, who played a fan favorite character in season 4 of the Netflix series Stranger Things and will be seen in the upcoming A Quiet Place: Day One, has signed on to star in the film!
Quinn’s Relapse character is Matt Cullen, who checks into rehab after witnessing a horrific death during a drugged-up party. Three months later, he is set to get his life back together, staying at his parent’s mansion in the hills of Los Angeles. But things have changed around Matt and everything seems off balance. Holistay is the latest in an ever-growing list of AirBnB-themed horrors. From Creep Nation and Exit through Superhost and, of course, Barbarian there’s a plethora of films warning us to get a hotel room if we want to stay alive. Although considering how many horror films have been set in hotels, maybe we should just stay home,
Opening with a brief scene where two individuals whose faces we don’t see pull up to a house and do some half-assed cleaning then leave, Holistay then introduces us to an Irish couple Finn and Branna who are in San Diego, the film was actually shot in Los Vegas, on vacation.
They’ve barely gotten into their rental when Tony and Gia (Gabriela Kulaif; Kaka Nirvana) arrive from New York. There’s been a double booking.

The American Psycho episode of Wtf Happened to This Adaptation? was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian. Here is the text of Hatfield’s script:
Horror can take many forms and its high time we talked about something firmly in the psychological realm. Author Brett Easton Ellis is known to broach subjects that are uncomfortable or outright horrifying, but it is with his 3rd book that he went for the throat so to speak and tackle a more traditional genre topic in a thoroughly nontraditional way. American Psycho was quite controversial upon its release in 1991 and the film based on it in 2000 (watch it Here) was divisive then and it’s divisive now.
Take a look at the craftsmanship on that card as we find out what the f*ck happened to this adaptation.

The gap between a good high school horror flick and a mediocre one is about a mile long, but the difference between a mediocre high school horror flick and a slightly less mediocre genre effort is almost completely indistinguishable. After a while, all these non-descript, hormone-ridden teens start to blend together into the same plaid-shirt-wearing stereotypes, whether they’re partaking in illegal activities or being hacked to bits by the next slasher hopeful.
Unfortunately, The Curse Of Downers Grove is yet another mediocre high school nightmare that’s no different than the last ten similarly scoped thrillers about evil town curses, despite being penned by American Pyscho author Bret Easton Ellis. The story is adapted from Michael Hornburg’s 90s novel Downers Grove, with indie filmmaker Derick Martini stepping behind the camera to take over directorial duties – though you’re probably just here because of Ellis’ name. Teenage Wasteland: Ellis & Martini Join Forces for Derivative Teen Angst
Check your expectations at the opening credits with The Curse of Downers Grove, a muddled teen scream mix of urban legend meets self-fulfilling prophecy metaphor. Many will be unable to bypass taking a look, however, upon learning the schlocky titled genre effort was penned by Bret Easton Ellis, his first cinematic project following the infamous and ultimately ill-fated Paul Schrader/Lindsey Lohan experiment The Canyons (2013). An ambitious thread of something greater sometimes resonates in this adolescent angst tale spiked with violence and a smattering of watered down sexuality (at least compared to what we know Ellis can imagine), but is ultimately lost in the tonally awkward jumps between genre elements and out-of-touch flourishes as concerns law-enforcement and teenagers.

There is no doubt that Bret Easton Ellis has a distinct voice. Through numerous adaptations of his work, such as Less Than Zero, American Psycho, and The Rules of Attraction, novelist Bret Easton Ellis has become a familiar name to film fans over the years. In 2008, however, the novelist stepped into the film realm himself, co-adapting his book The Informers for the big screen. He followed it up with an original screenplay in 2013 for The Canyons, and his next foray into features will see him adapt another person’s novel.
Titled The Curse of Downers Grove, the screenplay is adapted from the Michael Hornburg novel Downers Grove. Ellis co-wrote the screenplay with Derick Martini, and the latter takes the directing reins for the feature, whose synopsis can be read below.

"The Curse of Downers Grove" is an interesting twist in the career of young indie filmmaker Derick Martini. He came to acclaim with the family drama "Lymelife" with Alec Baldwin, Rory Culkin, and Emma Roberts. Martin Scorsese liked it so much he served as an executive producer. His follow-up “Hick,” with Chloe Moretz, Blake Lively and Eddie Redmayne -- a pretty notable cast -- ended up on many of year-end worst lists in 2011. Now Martini’s back with the teen horror “The Curse of Downers Grove.” Written by Bret Easton Ellis, the movie stars Bella Heathcote (“Dark Shadows”), “X-Men” actor Lucas Till, Kevin Zegers, Penelope Mitchell, Zane Holtz, Helen Slater, and Tom Arnold. Here’s the official synopsis: The town of Downers Grove looks like your average suburban neighborhood —but Downers Grove has a disturbing secret.... Whether you are a filmmaker, or one of the Sundance programmers whose task it is to identify the films that make up a line-up, it is indeed the most wonderful, panic-filled and nerve racking time of the year. The 31st edition of the Sundance Film Festival kicks off on January 22nd with Park City and Salt Lake City playing host to some of the more innovative, thought-provoking narrative and non-fiction films of 2015. Easton Ellis is teasing Twitter with ideas on casting, directors and screenwriters (himself) for the adaptation of El James's erotic novels. Is he serious?
Maverick novelist Bret Easton Ellis has put himself forward to adapt erotic literary sensation Fifty Shades of Grey for the big screen with an enthusiastic Twitter splurge.
El James's tale of bondage and domination has become the fastest-selling book of the year, prompting a rush among publishers to develop their own take on the emerging "mommy porn" phenomenon. Studio Universal won the screen rights in March and plans a trilogy based on the novel and its two sequels. Angelina Jolie was at one point tipped to direct following the critical success of her debut film In the Land of Blood and Honey. Easton Ellis, however, has other ideas.

[1] Normally, if a Hollywood screenwriter named a porn star as his top choice to lead a mainstream film, it would come as a bit of a surprise, but when the scribe in question is Bret Easton Ellis, it just makes so much sense. The controversial writer has tweeted that he's currently working on a "L.A. noir microbudget" movie for director Paul Schrader, and that he hopes adult film sensation James Deen will topline the cast. More details after the jump. Ellis tweeted [2] (via The Playlist [3]) last week that he was "efore bed finishing film treatment for James Deen to star in. He has to act and be full-frontal naked banging girls and guys realistically." Then, over the weekend, he reiterated his desire to see Deen in his film, writing [4] "James Deen is my first choice to play Christian or Ryan in La noir micro budget Paul Schrader movie I'm writing....

Darren Criss is no longer attached to star in Michael Hornburg's upcoming film Downers Grove. Less Than Zero author Bret Easton Ellis, who has penned the film's screenplay, recently suggested that the Glee star was in line for a role in the project. "Whatever my problems with Glee [are, they] have nothing to do with the incredibly talented cast itself," Ellis tweeted, referring to his negative comments about Glee back in April. "And no, the producers of the script I wrote, which Darren Criss might (or might not) star in, didn't (more)...

Looks like Darren Criss will get to avoid some on-set awkwardness after all. Just four days after American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis tweeted that Darren Criss may be starring in an adaptation of Michael Hornburg’s Downers Grove that he’s writing, EW has learned that the Glee star is in fact not attached to the film.
It would have been a strange pairing — in April, Ellis took to his Twitter to spew insults about the Fox hit. One of his tweets: “I like the idea of ‘Glee’ but why is it that every time I watch an episode...

Water under the bridge? Back in April, American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis released a barrage of harsh tweets mocking Fox’s Glee that invited the ire of both fans and members of the gay community alike. One of Ellis’ tweets: “I like the idea of ‘Glee’ but why is it that every time I watch an episode I feel like I’ve stepped into a puddle of HIV?”
But now it looks like Ellis may be working with one of the show’s most beloved stars. Back-tracking a bit from his previous statements, Ellis wrote a tweet praising Glee...

From high school to grade school! I knew the Glee kids were older than their characters, but news that Chord Overstreet is set to play Brick's elementary school teacher on The Middle makes me wonder how he got through college so fast.
Disney fired Marvel's marketing department. Pretty much the whole thing. And yet the people at Warner Bros. responsible for Green Lantern still get paychecks.
Clive Barker took to Twitter to make sure the world knew that he has nothing at all to do with the new Hellraiser: Revelations. " Hello, my friends. I want to put on record that the flick out there using the word Hellraiser Is No F**Kin' Child Of Mine! I have Nothing to do with the f**kin' thing. If they claim its from the mind of Clive Barker, it's a lie. It's not even from my butt-hole."

So much for that bit of dubious casting! A rep tells Movieline that Darren Criss is not signed on to the next Bret Easton Ellis film Downers Grove (an adaptation of Michael Hornberg's thriller), even though Ellis took back the "tasteless" HIV-related joke he made about Glee. Downers Grove concerns "a cursed high school in the Chicago suburb of Downers Grove." Once upon a time I worked at a Barnes & Noble in Downers Grove, Il. The "Christian Inspiration" section was indeed haunting!

Darren Criss, it seems, did not step too deeply into that famed "puddle of HIV."
Bret Easton Ellis, famed author of such happy tomes as "American Psycho," went on a widely-read Twitter rant back in April in which he dissed everyone's favorite high school musical dramedy. "I like the idea of 'Glee' but why is it that every time I watch an episode I feel like I've stepped into a puddle of HIV?" he wrote.
That drew the scathing criticism and protective claws of Gleeks the world round (and, probably, HIV advocates), leading him to tweet two days later, "Okay, okay, I get it, I get it. I'll stop riffing on H.I.Glee and tweet about how boring the collected stories of William Trevor are. Happy?"
On Sunday, Easton Ellis returned to the subject of the show, but for a very different reason.

Bret Easton Ellis, who uses Twitter to air opinions like, "[Glee makes me feel] like I've stepped into a puddle of HIV," is coming face to face with the puddle itself: Glee's Darren Criss has apparently signed on for a supporting role in Downers Grove, costarring Lucy Hale and Hayden Panettiere, which Ellis is adapting. Said Ellis on Twitter, "Whatever my problems with Glee have nothing to do with the incredibly talented cast itself. Have tastelessly bashed the show not the actors." Still, a minor Lol is in order. Author Bret Easton Ellis' shark-horror movie Bait is going into production this coming spring in Spain, according to Variety. Ellis, whose books have been adapted into the films Less Than Zero, American Psycho, The Rules of Attraction, and The Informers, wrote the screenplay about "a disturbed woman who holds a group of American students hostage in shark-infested waters."
Yeah, I can do sharks too.
The film will be directed by Jonas Pate, a TV veteran who's also somewhat known for the feature films Shrink from 2009 and Deceiver from 1997. That's right, he had a 12-year hiatus between feature films, but he's got a ton of television credits from that period. Bait will be the second Bret Easton Ellis-written screenplay to be heading into production this spring; we'd previously reported that his screenplay for Downers Grove will also start filming around the same time.
