Glad I saw this....
eventpix13 June 2014
I certainly wouldn't consider this movie to be a great film but I liked it and am glad I got a chance to see it.

It has always seemed to me that a surprising number of the negative reviews that I read at IMDb fall into two categories. The first is that the movie was not a movie that the reviewer wanted to see, and the second that the movie wasn't made in the manner that the reviewer would have made it. Keeping that in mind I would caution anyone thinking of seeing this that it is NOT a feel good story of 'coming out' in the military. In fact I don't think that I would even characterize it as a gay movie. I would say that it is first and foremost about the military itself and more particularly about the anti-gay witch hunts that were commonplace in the military for decades. It clearly is made from the point of view that these witch hunts had a negative impact on everyone involved, including the military itself. Consequently, there are going to be people who dislike this movie because they despise the idea of gays in the military. In other words, this is not a movie they wanted to see..... ever..... and they don't want you to see it either.

This is a movie about a bunch of guys having a jolly old time flying, and incidentally crashing, very expensive fighter planes during a time of supposed 'peace'. It wouldn't appear that any of them have any doubts about the nature of their sexual orientation. They are the kind of straight dudes that can cavort around naked, even get raunchy and physical with each other without seeing it as really sexual at all. The investigation that becomes central to the film actually comes about because of how they are doing their job; their negligence and dishonesty. If there is one thing that unites them it is the necessity of covering up their screw-ups, and this attitude goes all the way up to the highest command level. To the reviewer who complained that more than 30 minutes at the beginning of the film were devoted to "exposition and character development" I would suggest that, no, this was the actual film. It just wasn't the film you wanted to see. (By the way, I also might mention to the reviewer who complained "It was so hard to follow. Couldn't tell if a day went by, a month, a year or many years" that, in the print I saw at least, the years and locations of each segment were clearly written on the screen. Perhaps you just were too lazy to read them. That could also be why you mistakenly thought it "represented the 1950's")

I have to say that I personally did not particularly enjoy the 'top gun' style antics of these guys. I have a low opinion of the movie "Top Gun" because it helped people get over sour memories of the Vietnam debacle, not a bad thing in itself, but unfortunately I believe it made it easier for us to be led us into the First Gulf War, which many people in this country found to be highly enjoyable and uplifting, but then, again, into the Second one which was 'fun' to watch on TV at first but then not nearly as much fun as it dragged on and on...... like Vietnam. On the plus side, it didn't seem to me that any of the main characters here were portrayed as heroes, except perhaps the one who walks away. Most are easy on the eyes, and I have to hand it to them, they were able to get stinking drunk in their studly white uniforms without spilling a drop.

I think it is fair to point out that "Burning Blue" has what might be considered to be problems with continuity and clarity but I recently saw "Breathless", a movie often found in critic's top ten all time lists, and it was considerably more incoherent and less clear than this film. "Breathless" jumps all over the place. But as one highly respected critic has said, that represents: "the meaninglessness of the time interval between moral decisions." Huh??? If a defining moment here in a crucial scene slips by us unnoticed could it be because the individuals involved initially would prefer to pretend it never happened? And then, for reasons both personal and legal, that turns out to be a rather difficult to accomplish.

Top Gun Adjacent :)
josedavid7126 October 2014
This movie reminds me somewhat of Top Gun. Wanting to the best at flight, relying on your mates and trying to hide faults / deficiencies.

This movie was beautifully shot considering locations / sets. With the blessing of the USN it tackled a subject which is til this day still a source of anguish for many current and former service persons in all branches of our military and life in general. The development of the character relationships was just OK in that you get the connection but it was lacking a certain dynamic. The struggles of the main characters against the discriminatory system in the US Armed Forces, their families, friends and themselves is evident and well acted but again, something in the writing / development was lacking. Thankfully there wasn't many of the typical gay clichés in this movie.

On a completely selfish note, while many the gay themed movie has gratuitous nudity and one sex scene after another. I'm kind of disappointed at the one "nude" scene there was. Not what I would've wanted or expected considering the main characters and theme. Again, completely selfish observation on my part though...I'm allowed :)

Top Guns fall in love
bkoganbing2 August 2014
It may be the time of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' but a whole lot in the Armed Services haven't got the message. They're still on a seek and eliminate mission as we see in Burning Blue.

Trent Ford and Morgan Spector are a pair of Top Gun type pilots who are also married and quite secretly gay. Assigned to the same unit they fall for each other. There seems to be so many in the Navy that are gay one wonders if they all disappeared tomorrow how that might effect the security of the nation.

But eliminate them is the mission of Michael Sirow of NCIS and don't kid yourself if you're a fan of the television series. NCIS in the bad old days did indeed conduct 'investigations' to find gays in the military. Sirow takes a pair of plane crashes among the pilots and turns it into a witch hunt.

Ford and Spector have a lot to lose, they're both from traditional military families, their fathers are admirals. It's beyond the pale and impossible that these All American fighter jocks are queer.

Burning Blue is a fine drama about days that are hopefully behind us. The mere fact that the military apparently cooperated in the making of this film indicates as much. A fine ensemble cast plays this one from the heart. Definitely try and see this one.

pretty good
Kirpianuscus31 October 2020
A film seductive first for the way to define sensitive subjects, for the art of tension and anatomy of conflicts and, off course, not the last, for performances. It is not exactly what you expect and this can be more than a virtue. A smart story and well construction of conflicts. And , sure, the precise message. Short, just real good.

I really wanted to like this movie!
jelad612-124 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
On the surface, it sounded great. Plus it was based on a true story. The film looks really good and the acting is great, but the script and story are so muddled. There are three main characters. Two of them, Dan and Will, are good friends and they are featured in the opening scenes. I thought this was going to be a film about them slowly falling in love, but then the third main character, Matt, shows up. The first time I watched this, I found myself saying, "Now who is he?" I actually went back and watched the beginning again, and Matt is there, but he doesn't speak a line until more than 15 minutes into the movie. The set-up fell completely flat. After that, Dan and Matt supposedly fall in love, but it's hard to tell! Matt is married and Dan has a fiancée, and both couples break up over the course of the film, but we don't see either breakup on screen. The two of them hang out as friends and have one rowdy night in a bar, but it's not immediately evident that it's a gay bar, and they leave with two women. Later on, after they decide to not speak to each other, suddenly Matt shows up and they start kissing, but it just made no logical sense, and there was no buildup. The last part of the film is actually well done, and features good acting from the actors who play Dan and Will. Overall I was just wanting so much more from this film!

Was expecting a bad movie based on the reviews

What a surprise...underneath the corny top gun look is a touching story. The best part is that you feel the longing and the distance between the two men.

a tricky time in history
ksf-230 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
SPOILERS - Dan, Will and Matt (Ford, Spector, Mayes) are Navy fly guys. Dan and Matt fall for each other. But Matt is married. At first, neither one is sure what they want. This starts out a little cheesy, but get so much better as it goes along. Clinton had enacted Don't Ask, Don't Tell, meaning if you kept it all to yourself, and weren't caught, the higher ups would leave you alone. Lots of gray area, as we see in the film. The two flyers are photographed together. And seen dancing and kissing. So the mucky mucks pursue it, including Dan's own father. If Dan will sign a statement stating it was a one time event, he is off the hook... otherwise, he'll be bounced with a dis-honorable discharge. Will is Dan's bud, and may or may not be gay himself. He appears to be jealous of what Dan and Matt had together. The federal courts didn't legalize same sex marriage in all fifty states until 2015, so it was pretty much a state by state issue up to that point. According to imdb, this film was released in 2013/2014, so one assumes it was made in 2012/2013. President Obama repealed Don't Ask Don't Tell in 2010, but sodomy was still prohibited under the Code of Military Justice, according to wikipedia dot com. As summarized in the final moments in the film. It's pretty good. Highlights a very tricky time for those serving in the military. Directed by D. M. W. Greer.

Interesting topic, awful movie
zindude31 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
You are lead to believe this is a story about the romance between 2 air force officers. Instead its written as a story about the friendship between the lead and his selfish, homophobic friend. The supposed love story consists of longing looks, the 2 officers dancing next to each other, a weird night with sex with woman from a bar where they stay in the same room on leave, and 1 kiss about 2/3 through this train wreck. When you finally think you are getting to the love story its ended, and now a witch hunt starts about their non-love affair. The movie is so afraid to show anything between them beyond longing glances, that even when the leads are shown shirtless in a locker scene, its for a split second. Apparently shirtless guys are just too "out there" for this film. I could swear this was directed by a homophobe or a religious conservative.

This could have been a great movie, instead its a great topic with a terrible treatment. I do think the actors showed some chemistry (in the endless longing looks), but the butchered story line left them nothing for them to do with it.

Bad marketing keeps this undiscovered excellent gem from much worthy attention
sinnerofcinema12 June 2014
I've read all of the reviews on this official IMDb page of this film prior to choosing to watch. For the most part, I watch a film based on my own personal interests regardless of popular/professional reviews. Unfortunately, I was the only one in the theatre with a friend. I found it appalling that the movie theatre showing the film did not even have a one sheet much less any kind of promotional materials to at least help with the in-theatre promotion of this independent.

Let's get to the movie. The friend I went with read me a couple of bad reviews from folks who did not even show the film the courtesy of watching it but had judge the film based on its homosexual content. I had to promise her that if she did not like it we would both leave within the first 20 minutes. Well not only did this film not disappoint, but I found my friend and myself tearing up unexpectedly throughout the last quarter of the film. Yes, gay themed films have evolved pass the don't ask don't tell. However, as the story unfolds, you will find yourself immerse in it and also wondering what will happen next. The lead actors have a very engaging chemistry. They are so good together that whenever they are on screen they light it up with a very romantic glow. Lastly, I would like to advise anyone who's on the edge of whether to watch this film or not, give yourself the opportunity to enjoy this very entertaining treat. You will find yourself elated that you did. Specially towards the end of the film. You will even want to call a friend or two to recommend it. This is a film you will not soon forget. I came into this film with much trepidation and now after watching it all I can say is that you should bring some tissue because when you least expect it, this film will hit you like a ton of bricks and you will empathize with the plight of the character during some very devastating turn of events.

Great subject, poorly handled
phed499 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The witch hunts that went on in the armed forces during Don't Ask, Don't Tell is a great subject for a film, but the script for this movie is practically incoherent - it's difficult not only to keep the characters straight (no pun intended), but the chronology. After more than 30 minutes of exposition and character-introduction, there is a vitally important scene that is so obtusely directed that ***SPOILER*** I didn't realize until an hour later that two of the characters had had sex. This isn't one of those movies that is so bad that it becomes funny; it's just tedious and confusing. The MPAA guide warns that there is "graphic nudity." Unfortunately, this doesn't involve Rob Mayes, who is very attractive and appealing as the guitar-playing object of desire, and who makes his part of the story believable.

Great Movie, though maybe not what the audience want
rachsthree10 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
In this age of on-screen unrestrained sexuality, it's easy to dismiss one gay-themed movie as 'bad' since there isn't much baring man-on- man action, but Burning Blue is much more than that. It's a movie that requires the audience to think, to imagine what it was like back in the days of disastrous 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy.

For me it plays out like a triangle love story, one between BFFs Will and Daniel, and one between Daniel and Matt. Will's character is ambiguous of whether he's straight or gay, some people might even call him a homophobic prick. My take is that he's a repressed homosexual who's actually forever in love with Daniel but just couldn't figure out what's what, and his world came crashing when Matt entered the frame and took Daniel's heart away.

Many complaints that there are too many 'longing stares' between Matt and Daniel, the sexual things were only represented by one kissing scene while it's not clear whether they actually have done the 'dirty deed' back in NYC that night. For me Trent Ford and Rob Mayes have enough on-screen chemistry for us audience to feel that they're really in love, however repressive it must be at that day and age.

This is one gem of a movie. We as the audience should do more justice to it, and not just take it for granted just because this isn't actually your run-of-the-mill, sex-romp, butt-baring, gay movie.

Bottom Gun
ekeby8 April 2017
That's no indication of the sexual position preferences of the main characters, because I would have no way of knowing. This movie was so muddled and vague it wasn't even clear sex had happened until it was acknowledged in the dialog.

We know the characters are in love. That's accomplished with smoldering surreptitious glances. But that's about all you can tell from this bottom-of-the-barrel script. It's really impossible to tell what's going on. It came as a surprise to learn that the action covers about eight years. One of the characters says so. I wouldn't have known otherwise.

The plot is navy pilots vying for some prestigious assignment. Things go wrong. Eventually NCIS suspects planes crashed because pilots had gay feelings. No, really--that's it.

The last quarter of the movie is more direct, focusing on the Don't Ask, Don't Tell idiocy. But it's pretty heavy handed. I almost expected one of the accusers to twirl a mustache, like the villain in a Dudley DoRight cartoon.

I wanted to like this movie, in fact I liked the characters and the setting. But it's really only watchable if you don't care about things like continuity or logic.

Script/direct/edit failure for convincing plot and good story-line
yeomanie30 July 2017
No spoiler alerts here! To my mind... OK here are my bug bears: - Not clear for first half hour which decade the film is set. This may have been intentional to suggest timeless values of camaraderie, betrayal, taboo and forbidden love. If so then well done but not clear - Whether its editing, direction or script, the character development is done but not the relationship leaves too much too the power of suggestion and imagination. It's clear to me that someone with a conservative agenda edited out anything that might have been too salacious for its time. The power of suggestion? Meh... - The audience is clearly intended to be wider than just LGBT. But how many non military people will search for a film if not LGBT? Am guessing they were thinking of immediate box office success - how successful was it in the end? As an LGBT film it falls short. OK here are the things I like: - The story itself -The actors (yeah!) - The use of an external figure investigating which uncovered the facts - but not the important ones such as the reasons for the "mishaps"- interesting - The idea of 'blowing off steam' while on shore leave gave the characters time to explore their identity - The courage of one individual to stand up to the organisation and defend himself and the truth... did I understand the story was based on a true one? All in all well done 4* just pity about the need to 'not offend' mainstream audiences...

Burning blue
dameyg120 March 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this move at private screening in Chelsea NYC, I was disappointed not bc it was a bad film, because there is great film there it's just didn't run the way I thought it personally should. Firstly I don't understand the first 40 minute focus on the friendship, the first 10 mins made this clear to the audience, the relationship between Daniel and Matthew then suffered from being underdeveloped. The main focus of the movie is this relationship, should have gave it it's due attention. Then the key supporting characters such as the skipper, I'm assuming from his scene was the alpha male in the group, we're left sitting like lame ducks in the end, no opinion and no input to the story. They should have been the first to criticize and react to it, they didn't do that which gave there characters no purpose and left the leads with no redemption. I truly hope that this film sees the screen, it's a topic that needs to see the light of day, an issue that needs to be addressed. Beautifully shot, the intrepid never looked better, and some sterling performances, especially the leads. Deserves to be seen

Repressed Individuals in the Military
derrickluciano14 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
One of the fine films I've seen about gays in the military when discrimination and homophobia existed. This is based on director's DMW Greer's play of the same title which received critical acclaim.

The story focuses on two relationships. First is the "bromance" of Daniel and William who are F- 18 pilots working for the US Navy. Buddies from the start, this friendship was disrupted when a third guy Matthew entered the picture and became Daniel's love interest. This film is set during the period of Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy when the situation made the characters "internally" homophobic and sexually repressed, heartbroken and fearing for their career future. A gay witch hunt follows, investigating Daniel and Matthew relations and also that of William's and other pilots'.

The last half hour is engrossing and will reveal secrets. But the message is clear: the old "Don't Ask Don't Tell" and the discriminatory policies before that did not work. It had only detrimentally affected the lives, loves and families of gays who really just want to serve their country.

The film has very good production values, like a mainstream film, and very well paced. The acting is excellent especially by Trent Ford and Morgan Spector (fine acting at the last part). Rob Mayes is great as handsome Matthew.

Over-all a film worth watching.

Hit a nerve and can't shake it
joshcloud-0208114 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this movie over a week ago and I have thought about this story and the characters every day since. The end killed me and left me wanting more...from what actually happened in the air between Matthew and William to what Daniel was going to do with his life now that he had left the Navy. But that's not what really hit my nerve. What I can't shake is the fact that there are countless men and women who have expierenced persecution in our armed forces. I never actually knew how bad it was and is for them (I had just heard about "don't ask, don't tell as a kid) and this movie has left me with a better understanding and a new found respect and support for out LGBT service men and women.

Dirty Trick!!!
johnm-3813230 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Thought this was going to be a gay romance about two Navy pilots, but it's just a pathetic, total waste of time. You are sucked into waiting for a romance that almost happens, but then can never because one of them is killed. After this point, it becomes a gay witch hunt by military officials. The actors are handsome, masculine and reasonably competent. But there really is no point in watching this movie. And really....the two closeted gay pilots were only "vaguely" in bed together once...and we are to believe they fell madly in love with one another after just one incidence???? And when they later kissed, right before Matt flew off to die, it didn't feel credible. This movie serves no purpose.

Horrible
rbgntoby7 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
What a bad movie. Makes no sense for a movie written in 2013 or ever. Has no relevance and just makes zero sense. Save your money, I wish I did. What did they do that was against the law? It was so hard to follow. Couldn't tell if a day went by, a month, a year or many years. This was just the worst written, worst movie I ever saw. About a topic that could have been so relevant this one made no sense. I'm even struggling her to write enough bad things to be able to post this review. I was so interested in the topic but it was done so poorly. Can't say it was predictable since it just made I sense. Shame on the writers and I can only imagine the actors had nothing else better to do. Even if this movie represented the 1950's it just makes no sense.

Good, but could've been great
robtyrrell-986077 May 2020
OK, gotta admit I was lured into this assuming there would be lots of skin and sex. Which there isn't.

On the other hand, the acting, story and music are better than I expected (some of the actors are MUCH better than expected). What keeps this film from being a 10 (for me) is the jarring editing: occasionally scenes jump around a lot and pacing seems uneven. Major plot points just happen and you're left momentarily bewildered as to what the hell just went down. Some of the characters and relationships should have either been flushed out more or else edited out completely, because they feel incomplete.

But the movie also gets 5 stars right out of the gate simply because Rob Mayes is delicious to look at. 😉

thin plot tries to build on a weak foundation
robertwoles2 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This movie addresses important and heavy themes, but does little work setting up the background necessary. The death of a main character marks a turning point in the film, when the movie tries to drive home important messages without setting up the background in the plot that makes the death significant.

My main issue isn't with the idea of the movie or the desired plot, but it makes no sense. Scenes are not thoroughly developed and it was confusing trying to watch. Characters will reference things without them being clear from the plot itself, which is even more confusing. When the main character professes his love to another character, it was never even clear in the movie that the two had romantic relations. Hard to follow.

How come this movie isn't very known and the ratings only 5.7!?
Samx_3 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I haven't seen a movie that touched my soul like this in really long while. The story is hurtful and the sad part is that it's true. You may lose your life just because of your sexuality and you must live a life that you don't want. What Daniel's went through broke my heart to million pieces. I wished if they just had more scenes together or that they showed some flashbacks after Matthew died. The actors played their roles perfectly and there was a good chemistry between them. I honestly don't know what to talk about cuz everything in the two characters was perfect. The only bad thing is that they didn't have many scenes together.

Heavy on drama. Little to no romance
Stephen_SJ15 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I actually watched this movie because it was listed as a gay romance. While it was well acted and certainly made its point on the issue of gays in the military, you will be disappointed if you are seeking a feel good romance or actually any romance at all. This movie definitely does not have a a feel- good vibe ( like too many "gay romances" in my opinion). But I know am of the option this movie was misclassified as a gay romance. It is a heavy drama with a lot of angst that focuses much more on homophobia in the military than romance. While the coverage of the issue of gays in the military was solid, the romance aspect was non-existent for the most part and totally unsatisfying when the little attempt was made at it. Other than a kiss, there was no physical contact shown between the male leads at all. The only scene where there was supposedly physical intimacy between them, only showed them with women. The audience didn't even realize they had been together. So it just did not seem credible that they could have fallen in love based on the interactions shown in the movie. There was more focus on one character's friendship with his married, straight best friend than on the romance with the other character. There were few to no likeable characters with redeeming qualities. The two main leads did a good job acting with what they had to work with. This movie was not an enjoyable watch- I know now it was not meant to be light or feel good. It's a political statement drama and it does that well (infuriatingly so). While maddening, and somewhat depressing, it is definitely worth seeing as long as you know what you're getting into.

Good film, not Gay film.
Berthulf3 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Writing reviews of films, books or music is not something I generally do; certainly, I read and am influenced by them, but I don't write them. This film has, however, inspired me to share my appreciation of the film.

A little background: I'm gay, but I hate gay films. In general, they're a load of crap: crass, from little to no plot, following a standard template construction that features far too much sexualisation of the cast. In short, I hate gay films for being everything this film isn't.

That being said, this film is not a gay film. There are (spoiler) gay characters, but their sexuality is, for the most part, entirely incidental to the plot and I feel it is handled quite considerately, honestly and subtly; something that, depressingly, is still rare in the film industry. But the film does cover some very important and controversial issues surrounding military service and, whilst it specifically depicts the US Navy, issues such as homophobia and death are universal.

I shall not go any further into the plot, but will suffice to say that if you like drama and are not prone to violent outbursts of homophobia, then this is an excellent film for you. My only real complaint about the film is that it wasn't released here in the UK. Instead I had to buy the American DVD and get it shipped; IMO, money very well spent.

Point of note, the DVD is rated R and states that it contains strong language, sexual content and graphic nudity. In all honesty, daytime TV is more sexually explicit and the brief nudity doesn't deserve the prefix "graphic" as nothing below the waist is ever put on show, but I would still think twice before showing it to anyone under 16.

Thoughtful and intense, this film easily gets a place in my top 10.

Good but too restraining
muyanzi72127 June 2014
I've always felt that we don't have enough nice stories about gay love. So I have to say this one is a good one considering so few real gay movies and so many stereotypical and cliché gay movies. It's def worthy to watch it. But the story is so restraining about the great feeling between the two men that the passionate love between them is almost smothered by many distracting scenes in the movie.

I just so wish there could have been more scenes between the beloved two men about how they know each other, how they get into each other and how happy they are when they hang out together even just secretly. This insufficiency is part of the reason why some reviews said they found confusing about who was with who.

But overall good story line though could be better filmed.
