Do they want us to dislike the characters?
Klnew201314 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I don't get why the characters seem to have such crappy personalities. I get that they want to play the whole "make mistakes while you're young" and "everyone grows into being better people" but it doesn't seem as if older Sophie actually did. She apparently still thinks it's funny to mock other people's misfortune and less successful lives, as well as still having a huge issue with lying. How can she try to claim that she underwent such growth when the older version doesn't show that she did.

They are turning Charlie into a total douche, baskets after hookups really? Just because he is single and attractive doesn't mean he has to be a play boy.

Another bad episode

Warning: Spoilers
There was nothing special in this episode, like all of the previous season 2 installments. Throughout the 20 minutes you actually root for Deirdre and then all of a sudden she takes a 180 turn that makes no sense only to put Sophie and Val in a good light. The Ellen story-line started out okay, but it was predictable and lacked any real humor. Jesse acted out of character and was being really mean to his friend. Meredith is so obvious in what she's doing that it doesn't make any sense Jesse is oblivious to her toxic behaviour. The only one who stole the show and made me laugh once was Charlie.

This episode wasn't for me

Warning: Spoilers
I like this show but this episode honestly bothered me. I think there are a lot of different ways to show the characters making mistakes & learning/growing from them, taking accountability and being self-aware etc., but the whole Sophie and Val passive aggressively bullying Deirdre thing was a bad direction to go in my opinion. I get what they're trying to do with the story but it actually seems a bit out of character for both Sophie and Val to be so crappy to their friend, especially with all the hyping up the two of them do for each other and other characters on the show in all of the previous episodes.

Yuck

I didn't enjoy the Ellen storyline, not really sure what the purpose of it was other than a bad joke. No character development is acheived and no goals were made other than comedic relief. Sophie's last episode with her becoming a pathological liar was one thing, but this episode kind of pushed her into irredeemable for me. I don't get how bullying is funny and was rooting for Deirdre until the end. However, these negative traits do seem to fit Sophie and Valentina's characters, and they don't have trouble fitting into the mold of "mean girls," but there's no heroine to balance things out. I stop rooting for either party and Sophie and Valentina become even less relatable and no longer any fun to watch. I'm wondering who the target audience was meant to be. I wish Meridith was written differently but her personality fits perfectly with the cast. I don't see how much different Meredith's narcissistic behavior is from Sophie's and Valentina's, so Meredith could probably blend right into their friend group.

Pathetic Deirde

Warning: Spoilers
This episdoe definitely leaned into some of the worst elements of How I Met Your Mother and how bad some of those Lily and Robin scenes would get when it was girls night out or whatever. I would gladly take those though over what we got here.

Still, the Sophie and Valentina scenes were not all that bad compared to what we got from the other key female character. The absolutely awful Ellen struck again and the writers seemed to think her being annoying, both at the apartment, and then later at the workplace, was comedy in any way, shape or form. It just accomplished the goal of irritating the viewers.

Time To Call it a Day Warning: Spoilers
I've given this show enough time now and can confidently say I'm going to call it a day and not watch any more. The show is not funny. The characters are just generally awful people. The more serious/dramatic stuff is ok but the jokes are just not good at all.

I was hoping to stick around to see Barney but I just can't force myself through any more.

The characters from HIMYM were far from being perfect people but they were funny and charming enough to make it work and they usually learned some sort of lesson eventually. Sophie and Valentina were bullies in this episode and the moral of the episod was 'they were right, actually.' Unbelievable.

It's had some decent moments through the series but I've had enough now. Also, Ellen is one of the worst characters I've seen in any show, ever.

Extremely dated, mean-spirited, badly acted
papouliasast21 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The whole character of Ellen is pure high-energy cringe, and it peaks here, with inexplicable outbursts of nonsense and absurdly terrible choices throughout. Everything about her character, from the terrible multi-camera sitcom acting to the consistently insane behavior that does not resemble actual humans, screams bad mid-90s comedy.

And then we have a storyline for Val and Sophie that seems made to make us hate them. They are, at this point, irredeemably terrible people and Future Sophie is not even apologetic looking back. And instead of them getting their deserved comeuppance for being absolute monsters, it's Deirdre, the character you're actually rooting for, that ends up being the bad guy somehow, in a desperate attempt to paint the protagonists in a good light. And of course no part of this is remotely funny in any way. What were the writers even going for here? The lowest point of this garbage show so far.

Disappointing character development
JJSM2214 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I was not a fan of our characters in this one, the fact that Sophie and Valentina have a friend they call pathetic and only meet to make themselves feel better is a real bummer. It reminds me of Barney's shameful treatment of Women in the original that just doesn't fit well with todays standard. Not to mention Jesse's treatment of Sid, who was only trying to be a supportive friend. It all feels like a real step backwards PC wise and although it's played for humour it just feels wrong.

Ellen's storyline was fun though. It's old fashioned comedy but the right kind and it works. I'm hoping in the future they try and do better with the others.
