Where did that come from?
danwilberforce26 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Best episode in years! Did they get a new showrunner or something?

This felt more like an episode from the first 2 seasons, plenty of action and witty repartees, with the added bonus of a serial killer on the loose.

From the start of the episode I found myself instantly gripped. Whilst for the most part the story was pretty predictable, it was executed so well it didn't lessen the experience any.

I wasn't really into the idea of the Tim & Lucy coupling storyline that was teased at the end of the last season, but the way they've handled it here and what I can see for the future of their story, is a lot more intriguing now.

A great start to season 5, I just hope the show continues down this road.

Enjoyable despite not everything being believable

Warning: Spoilers
Rosalind's escape: not sure how I feel about that.

First she had to find yet another twisted person to help her. I don't know if these people grow on trees, I'd really hope not, but this part I can ignore, even though my initial reaction was "but why would she help her?". The characters have similar questions and it is explained but I don't completely buy said explanation.

Secondly, is it standard procedure to have only one officer there for such a dangerous criminal? No idea how it works, but it seems like the entire plan would have crumbled had another officer simply been there. So if this is standard procedure maybe it's not very good procedure. And if it is not... weak plot device.

That being said, unlike others I have no issue with her escaping, perhaps only with the realism of how it happened, but I guess a prisoner escaping always takes some amount of luck. Therefore it is not a big issue for me.

As for the other storyline, I like Lucy & TIm undercover, but the operation is said to be this huge deal then gets resolved by the end of the episode... That was a little underwhelming.

All in all it was an enjoyable episode and it made me look forward to the next one.

My Chenford-Loving Heart is so Full
SourCandyOrNoCandy27 September 2022
CHENFORDDDDDD!! What a greattttt episode for Tim and Lucy. I loved every moment of them undercover. I also loved seeing Thorsen again. Seeing a rich Black boy on television makes my heart way too happy lol.

Rosalind is my favourite serial killer ever written on television (and I've watched a tonnnnn of crime shows) so I was so so happy to see her back!! Annie Wersching plays this role so well.

Best parts of the episode?

  • Ummm... obviously every scene with Chen and Bradford. No spoilers buttttt... whew. They have so much chemistry it's not even funny.

  • The Bradford-Lopez friendship. It feels like they got so much closer after Angela's wedding and I love the fact that the relationship is developing.

  • Tamara is easily one of my favourite non-cop characters.

Worst part of the episode?

  • I literally can't find a single thing wrong. Everything was amazing. I watched it once, then again right after, took a shower, then came back and watched it again. It was that good.

Rosalind Dyer again?
MDawn26 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Ugh, I was looking forward to this season but the show is already off to the wrong start. I am so tired of Rosalind Dyer. This character is so boring and unlikeable there's no reason to watch if this is all you can do. Why is the show putting everything on this character? I've never liked the character or the storylines around her. The actress is miscast and it's like the show can only write about the evil Rosalind Dyer. Said another way: the Rookie's writers and showrunner are the only people who care about watching Rosalind Dyer! Please move on. Otherwise there is no point in continuing with this show.

Disappointing
donnyv6628 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I am so sick of all the people wanting the Chen and Bradford hook up to happen. I have always looked at those two as a brother sister relationship and seeing them kissing is like watching Donnie and Marie make out. Not every show needs to turn into a soap opera to please the bored housewife audience. And the Rosalind character needs to be done with for good this time. I hope they are not planning on dragging this out for too long, because it's already a ridiculous plot. The only upside to this first episode of the season, is that Bailey wasn't in every scene trying to save the day. Hope this gets better next week.

Not again
pauli_gomez8 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I liked Rosalind Dyer at first but this is already old. And Beth is just annoying. Everyone is incompetent when dealing with her, oh and Chris did not even look at the front seat.

Also, the undercover story was stupid last season and it is worse now. And seriously, I do not like Chemford. I like (or liked, I'm not sure) Chris and I do not like Lucy cheating on him. And the fact that Tim is her superior officer does not make things easier.

I really would have liked to see Detective Nolan. I think it would have been much more interesting than TO Nolan. I do like the characters but the plot is weaker every episode, it seems. And frankly, I am just watching because I like Nathan Fillion, but it is beginning to feel like that is not enough.

Bailey? Again?
TheMightyGForce3 May 2023
Why the hell was Bailey at the courthouse, in the trailer, and then again in the incident room when they were working the case?

She's gotten like Nathan Fillion's 'Doctor Cop Lawyer' from Con Man (2015).

Have the current writers never seen a TV show before, or read a book? All the characters are becoming ridiculous.

The show has always asked us to suspend our disbelief but, c'mon, at some point they've lost sight of the path.

They've gotten so used to writing for unrealistic scenarios that they've gradually, over time, led us on to what is now almost unwatcheable.

Please take a moment and refocus. You're supposed to be professionals.

Underwhelming premiere
CrimeDrama127 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I finally finished watching the season premiere. I took a break before the halfway point of this episode because it was pretty ridiculous. Why was there only one officer in the room while Dyer (convicted serial killer) changes clothes? Who is supposed to cover the officer while she removes the handcuffs and shackles? I am over the Chen and Bradford awkward crush. He's her superior anyway. It's especially stupid given that a serial killer has escaped and they have taken their eyes off the ball after their undercover assignment ends. Debrief and get after Dyer. This isn't a soap opera, it is a crime drama. The one interesting part of the premiere was Nolan earning a "Golden Ticket" to pick any job within the LAPD. He picked Training Officer. Not surprised but it was a letdown. There will be plenty of drama with rookies but "Rookie Feds" looks better. However, not everyone has streaming capabilities. The network is airing the show but promoting the streaming option. I will never be OK with taking shows off broadcast TV and making them streaming (subscription) only. It's bad business. I already boycotted "SEAL Team" and DWTS.

Change something or fade away
jcollins-458-4153874 October 2022
I like The Rookie. It's mostly good. Sure, there are a lot of filler episodes, but the light comedy mixed with the action. Can be entertaining.

This episode is mostly he same. Light hiker, some action, and a new theme develops for the season.

The problem here is the main antagonist is boring, over the top and unnecessary. I have a sense of dread thinking the whole season will be in pursuit of this person. Yawn, eye roll. More eye roll.

I like Nyla and her boyfriend. He's a good actor and doesn't over do it. Also, the sergeant is funny and a good character.

Also. The guy who was once famous for having been accused of murder but decided to be a cop is good. Use him more.

Of course Lucy is the star.

Pathetic
edpeace5526 October 2022
This show has been going downhill the past 2 seasons and it hit bottom now. Love the actors and the characters, but the writing sucks, creating totally unbelievable situations and throwing PC at us all the time. Pandering as hard as Hollywood can. This episode broke me from this show, I've seen everything Nathan Fillian is in from the beginning of his career but tjis show has turned to something unwatchable. So unbelievable, creating situations that cannot happen, the writers have stretch credibility too far. John made an unbelievable choice because they created a situation where he had to in order to keep the show and cast together. Sad that this promising show has died this way. Dead to me.

Sick writers
shuny27 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A least they are back to police work but they keep harping on a very very sick character. How do they even come up with some of the sick stuff that Rosalind has done? I will not be watching until I know I don't have to continue to see her. She will have to be dead. It can just be a simple gunshot, nothing fancy.

As far as the two undercover cops doing more than role playing, that is fine. The had to soften up Tim's character. This episode managed to get every character to show their faces at least once to remind us they are still there. Good thing. I forgot a few. I still wish they would knock off Wesley. I cannot stand his slimy character.

How boring
karenew-1267822 March 2023
I judge an episode or any program by my involvement in it. In other words do I come out of the fourth wall. I watch this kind of program to be involved in the story. If I become uninvolved, I lose interest. I definitely lost interest in this story line. Normally, "The Rookie" is one of my favorite shows but not this this episode. I think the writers were bored or missing somebody on their team. The premise for this episode was not my normal reason for watching this show.

Normally, I like a show that has a good balance between the characters personalities and story line. In this case it was way too much about the characters. I give the episode a D-
