Five years is too long between gigs for director Derek Franson. The director of Comforting Skin is back with a proof of concept for a new film called Rue. We insist you take a few minutes to watch it. The stand-alone short story was produced to introduce the wraith-like Rue creature and the mythology behind it, a precursor to the feature film Derek has in development. Enraged by an unseemly love affair between best friend and teacher, a student carelessly awakens a wraith that feeds on its victims' most shameful regrets. All we can say after watching this is we want more. What tremendous nightmare fuel it is! There is a collection of stills from the small production below, as well...

A couple of years ago Vancouver director Derek Franson landed on the scene with an impressive debut. Comforting Skin (review) didn't gather much steam beyond the festival circuit but it's a movie I really liked and which has come up here and there in conversation over the years, in part because the effects were so impressive but most often because of the subject matter. I can't help but think that if it came out now, Franson's movie would likely do far better as it touches on the cultural zeitgeist of body positivity and empowerment.
I hadn't really considered what Franson was up to until last week when his latest short film was brought to my attention.

The 5th annual Minneapolis Underground Film Festival begins tonight — August 17 — and runs throughout the entire weekend at the St. Anthony Main Theater. To help get in the mood for the dangerous films that will be on display for three awesome nights, filmmaker Greg Hanson has concocted the fairly disturbing official trailer, which you can watch above. Like most of Hanson’s work, it walks the line between fun and terrifying.
The festival opens today at 4:30 with a preview of the films screening, plus a brief selection of short films that will be followed by three feature-length documentaries: Marten Persiel’s This Ain’t California, Jj Kelly & Josh Thomas’ Go Ganges! and Michael Koskowski’s underground hit Zero Killed.
The rest of the fest is filled with quirky thrillers like Spenser Parsons’ Saturday Morning Massacre and Derek Franson’s Comforting Skin; oddball foreign films like Axel Ranisch’s Heavy Girls; plus,...

For their 5th annual edition, the Minneapolis Underground Film Festival is heating up by returning to the summer after being a winter event for the past three years. The fest will run on Aug. 17-19 with a killer lineup of films from all over the world — most of which probably will not be able to be seen in Minnesota except at this 3-day event.
Plus, there are two programming blocks of short films all made by local filmmakers, including Pam Colby’s Fertile Ashes, Ryan Becken’s Buffalo Shampoo, Janelle Sorenson & Melany Joy Beck’s Bring It 2 Peter, Jl Sosa’s Some of Angela and more.
The feature films screening this year cover an extremely diverse swath of subject matter, from every day people’s murder fantasies fulfilled — cinematically, at least — in Michal Koskowski’s German documentary Zero Killed; a tattoo comes to live to torment its wearer in...

In Derek Franson's indie Comforting Skin, a lonely young womans desperate need for emotional and sexual companionship draws her into a surreal and ultimately destructive relationship with a shifting and whispering tattoo she has willed to life on her skin. It reminded me of the classic "Tales From the Crypt" episode in which a tattoo came to life. Too bad it's nothing like it. Having world premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, Ryan Daley writes this: "After its supremely eerie first act, 'Comforting Skin' disintegrates into a boring indie melodrama, complete with overwrought arguments and tedious grievances." You'll find the entire review by clicking the link above. John Marrone also reviewed Ghoul out of the anti-Sundance festival.

Aside from Derek Franson's Comforting Skin, which Uncle Creepy wrote about earlier today, the horror offerings at the 2012 Slamdance Film Festival are slim indeed. In fact, it looks like just two other films are even sort of genre-related: Ok, Good from director Daniel Martinico and Sundowning from director/screenwriter Frank Rinaldi.
The 2012 Slamdance Film Festival will take place January 20–26, 2012, in Park City, Utah, at the Treasure Mountain Inn. It will showcase 18 feature-length competition films - 10 Narrative Films and 8 Documentary Films, including 13 World Premieres.
“Our competition showcase reflects new approaches to filmmaking that mirror the challenging times in which we currently live. These films showcase filmmakers who have a tremendous ability to innovate, experiment, and lead us boldly into the future of independent filmmaking,” said Peter Baxter, Slamdance President and Co-Founder.

Ten narratives and eight documentaries are lined up for the 2012 Slamdance Film Festival Competition. Variety's Dave McNary reports that two titles "already generating buzz are Bindlestiffs in the feature lineup and We Are Legion: The Story of Hacktavists in documentaries. Bindlestiffs, directed by Andrew Edison, stars Andrew Edison, Luke Loftin and John Karna as smart-mouthed high school virgins, who are suspended from school on a graffiti charge and flee to the inner city to live out the plot of The Catcher in the Rye. We Are Legion, directed and written by Brian Knappenberger, is a look inside the world of Anonymous, the radical 'hacktivist' collective that's redefined civil disobedience for the digital age."

This morning, I saw the first poster for the Vancouver International Film Festival (Viff) which runs September 29 to October 14. With only a few weeks to go before the full festival line-up is announced, festival organizers have been releasing tidbits of programming and last week, the sneak preview guide featuring a mere handful of the more than 230 feature length films, was released providing a good idea of what we can expect from this year's festival and from a casual glance, it looks as though Vancouverites are in for a treat.

Comforting Skin Trailer. Derek Franson‘s Comforting Skin (2011) movie trailer stars Victoria Bidewell, Tygh Runyan, Jane Sowerby, Phil Granger, and Ava Hughes. Comforting Skin‘s plot synopsis: “a supernatural thriller that follows Koffie, a lonely young woman who’s desperate need for emotional and sexual companionship draws her into a surreal and ultimately destructive relationship with a shifting and whispering tattoo she has willed to life on her skin.”
Damn does this horror movie look good and somehow it “was shot last spring on a budget of roughly $250,000.” I’m impressed.
On the tattoo special effects in Comforting Skin:
That was done through the use of digital animation and compositing techniques, requiring custom code developed by VFX Supervisor Ollie Rankin.
Comforting Skin also stars Eugene Lipinski, Jenn Griffin, Paul Jarrett, Laura Soltis, John Tench, Stephen Lofstrom, Jesai Jayhmes, Nicola Rollet, and Jared Cote.

Yikes. I've seen some messed up tattoos, and I've got a couple of unusual ones myself, but none of them... talk to me. Such is the subject of Canadian writer-director Derek Franson's film, The Comforting Skin. The trailer is... it's actually pretty great. It's also a bit disturbing, and more than a little unnerving, especially when it starts to really open up the door into the craziness. Just watch:

Full marks to writer-director Derek Franson. He knew he had something solid with Comforting Skin and he took the time to get it right. We first heard rumblings about the project in early 2010 but Franson has been taking his time to get the post production effects just right. Why?A lonely young woman's desperate need for emotional and physical companionship draws her into a surreal and ultimately destructive relationship with a shifting and whispering tattoo she has willed to life on her skin. Yes, the villain is a sentient tattoo and Franson knew it had to look just right or the whole thing would fall apart. It does. The first trailer has just arrived and you can check it below....

One of the best things about writing for Beyond Hollywood is discovering some truly unique motion pictures, productions that take unusual concepts and stretch them into full-length features. Like Derek Franson’s “Comforting Skin”, for example. Although the synopsis suggests that the filmmakers are aiming for something a bit more intelligent and high-brow than your typical genre effort, at the end of the day, it’s still a movie about a whispering tattoo. Focusing on this aspect may be selling the film short, but you’ve got to admit that it’s a pretty good hook. Here’s the official plot synopsis: Comforting Skin is a supernatural thriller that follows Koffie, a lonely young woman’s who’s desperate need for emotional and sexual companionship draws her into a surreal and ultimately destructive relationship with a shifting and whispering tattoo she has willed to life on her skin.
