A great series opener.
Sleepin_Dragon29 December 2019
This is a great opening episode to Series two, it boasts a hugely memorable and dramatic opening scene, which lasts about ten minutes. Just when you think it's done, it keeps going.

It's full of drama and suspense, the plot is deep, but the episode is easy to follow. We finally get to meet the infamous Seline, we'd get to know her better.

Only gripe, the way in which Vera treated Holly, she was rough on her, but got her just deserts, although Wunmi would move onto great things, as she is a terrific actress.

Some of Vera's glances past the camera are Worthing of Silent Witness, when Burton would broodily gaze by the camera.

Excellent. 9/10

second season opener
blanche-221 February 2014
In the first episode of the second season, Vera and Joe investigate an arson attack at the home of a police sergeant with whom Vera used to work. He was not home at the time; however, his teenage daughter was, and she is critically injured.

Vera goes to the hospital to see her old friend and colleague, and to her horror, she witnesses his suicide. Devastated, Vera soldiers on and she and her team hone in on who might be the killer. But they have to find him before he can be arrested.

This episode had more of a human touch to it. At the end of the previous season, Vera was having obvious heart trouble and Joe forced her to go to the doctor. Now she has been diagnosed as having angina. We get to meet Joe's wife. And again, Vera comes out with the unexpected quip. When asked by Joe if she was ever romantically involved with the late sergeant, she scoffs, "Use your eyes. Isn't it obvious that he was way out of his league?" Good episode with a neat twist.

Vera
hazangel-8991014 January 2024
Okay I just have to say this. I had said previously that I can relate to Vera. She is a loner, I get it but her staff care about her and would do anything for her. I wish she could just let loose and be cordial for one night as per their request. The dinner at Joe's house was overly awkward and did not have to be in my opinion. I know Joe understands her but my goodness. I do love her and Joe's relationship. He's like the son she never had.

Also, Holly leaving was interesting. Vera really does love and respect her staff even though she is not very good at showing it.

The episode was decent if not a little confusing.

Very confusing but powerful episode.

It took several viewings, some research and a lot of pondering, but I finally understood the plot! If anyone is still in doubt as to who did what, go to the video at 1:20:48 and you'll see what you need to see. And by the way, teenagers can absolutely put their parents through the wringer!

Just watch carefully and listen
melee33 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a little confused by the confusion of some of the reviewers. Dougie was arrested by Stewart during a protest, Lena was Dougies's girlfriend, Dougie was influenced by Stewart's daughter, the art teacher was just an idiot, and the pregnant girlfriend had issues. Easy peasy.

It was a very interesting case and Vera's attention to detail was spot on as she sees the soot from a fire, keeps in mind important dates, and ensures all the people are questioned.

She is hard on her associates, and maybe doesn't give positive feedback often enough, but she gets the job done and ensures everyone has an assignment.

Plot misses opportunity
zeitgeist-4723130 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
SPOILER ALERT !

Whilst the acting is good, and the music score terrific, I felt the writing was confused. The best twist would have been that the teacher character radicalized the 16 year old and oug; she recruited them, the same MO as El Qaida, she provides free home and food in exchange for loyalty to the Cause. Doug is buried on her land, she fears the girl will tell and was in any case jealous of her relationship with Doug, she has motive, means and opportunity. The former art teacher should have been the killer, and the Police should have found connections to extremist groups. Lena might have had motive, but not means or opportunity.

The least thrilling "Vera" episode so far
gridoon202419 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
In the second season premiere of "Vera", the title character and her team investigate an arson attack on the house of a police sergeant, who also happens to be a close old friend of Vera's. At the time of the attack he was not inside the house, but his teenage daughter was, and she gets badly hurt. Fearing that she will never wake up from her coma, her father commits suicide right in front of Vera's eyes, so now the stakes are personal for her. In fact, there is so much personal stuff in this episode - Vera's somewhat vague relationship with the dead cop, Holly's transfer request, Vera's dinner with Joe and his wife, etc. - that the mystery itself almost takes a back seat. And although you probably won't guess who-done-it, the finale, and this episode in general, is somewhat short on thrills. **1/2 out of 4.

Lost the plot
shortkay4 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Confusing story, difficult to follow with red herrings that led nowhere and characters introduced midstream. Incidentally, Stuart looked surprisingly unmarked for someone who had leapt to his death onto a hard concrete floor 4 stories below. No blood. No smashed face. A perfect corpse. My biggest gripe is we didn't find out who disconnected the oxygen mask? Was it the teacher? She was the only one with a motive. Too bad that the assailant's devious effort resulted in the girl miraculously reviving. Shades of Murdoch Mysteries. And what was the point of the misleading start? Unfair, I say! I actually replayed the last half of the episode to see if I had missed some clues, but I hadn't. Too clever for its own good. Or just plain, ungarnished sloppy scripting. Dish up one more like that and I won't bother watching again. Pity. Vera is an interesting, if flawed, character. Human.

Convoluted story (review contains DEFINITE spoiler !!!!)
philipwright17 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I like the Vera series. But I wish this episode had been clearer on who the killer actually was. It's suggested, but not explicitly enough revealed. ~~~~~~ WARNING ~~~~~~~~ !!!! SPOILER ALERT BELOW !!!! !!!! SPOILER ALERT BELOW !!!! !!!! SPOILER ALERT BELOW !!!! Lena has to be the killer. But how did she get the materials together (and the know-how) to actually make the bombs? Doug died just testing one out. And he seemed to be a lot more competent than his fiance.

The Ghost Position
Prismark107 March 2019
The opening story of the second series sees Vera battle health issues and a colleague who puts in a transfer request.

Vera also feels she has been caught napping. Her first sergeant, Stuart Macken is in hospital as his daughter was seriously injured in an arson attack. A hooded figure threw a petrol bomb. A distraught Macken then throws himself to his death at the hospital.

A shaken Vera probes Macken's ex-wife's family and also examines the arrests that Macken had made in a recent protest.

I just thought the story ended up being too convoluted for its own good. By the time the culprit was revealed, my thoughts were that it was too left field. In fact it was too far fetched as if logic took a back seat.

An insult to the audience (spoilers)
atrickyone6 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I can only endorse what a few other disappointed reviewers observed. The last fifteen minutes seemed tacked on from a different mystery. The intelligent culprit would have been the teacher not a heavily pregnant girlfriend who, incidentally, was seen twice hurtling down flights of stairs like an athlete. An insult to the viewers.

As a NEW Viewer of an OLD Show I'm a little perplexed
CBarb7065416 July 2019
My good Friend Vicki has watched every season of "Vera.I had a vague memory of seeing Season One, so I started now with Season Two. I liked it for the lack of glamour, the camera work, the scenery, and the few nods to humor amid the grim landscape (both physical and psychological.) I have no idea, however, what the heck happened. Reviews don't reveal the details and I have no inclination to watch it over again. What was Vera's relationship with her old superior? Right from the get-go the mystery was confusing. Why did he kill himself? Was he mentally deranged or what. Characters were introduced willy-nilly. The teacher (got short shrift as an actress for sure, Stella was unconscious through an hour and twenty minutes, and the young man : I don't even know who he was, or why he was in the mix. I liked Rose Leslie (Lena Holgate) was she the culprit? I don't know who threw the fire bomb. Atmosphere A, Plot line D.

I hope it's a real transfer
johnwwwatson18 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Wunmi Mosaku as DC Holly Lawson is distractingly annoying this episode. Whether her choice or the writer's, her character asked for a transfer and I hope it's real!
