Excellent episode

Following the nightmarish events of the previous month, the government in New York claims to have put an end to the undead problem. But the zombie hunters are suspicious of this good news. Director/co-writer Patrick Devaney once more does his customary ace job of creating and sustaining a mounting sense of pervasive dread and gloom, relates the gripping story at a constant brisk pace, delivers a handy helping of graphic and unflinching in-your-face splatter, and offers a few touching and thoughtful moments of poignant human drama amid all the bleak and unsparing horror. Better yet, this episode further benefits from addressing the impossibility of going back to normal in the wake of what's happened in an admirably straightforward and unsentimental manner. Moreover, a realistic brutal and protracted fight between Billy Cassidy (a solid and credible performance by Devaney) and the ever-rugged Bates (Christopher J. Murphy in top rough'n'tumble form) proves to be a savagely satisfying highlight. The devastating bummer ending packs a potent punch. The raw cinematography by Mark Boutros gives everything an authentically gritty look and makes exciting use of a hand-held camera. Bernadette McCallion's pulsating score hits the stirring spot. Very powerful stuff.
