Antwerp, 23/8/2012. Amidst the titanic mayoral election campaign, another disappearance of diamond polisher Ludo Nijs's only daughter Lena (10) isn't really newsworthy enough even for the regional paper. Yet its latest journalist recruit Marianne, daughter of state minister (major former national statesman) Reginald Smidt's daughter, transferring after three years in his home city Ghent, defies her superiors to investigate police commissioner Volkan Serter naturally laughs away. Investigating while she should mind her son Seppe, permanent victim of her career wrecking the marriage with his father Frederik, she finds some indications and gets the case published, hence taken seriously as presumed kidnapping.

While commissioner Volkan Serter's police team massively searches for Lena, Marianne abuses his trust as well as her best friend's and utterly neglects Seppe to seek a scoop. She thus leads Ludo Nijs to ex-boy-friend Staf De Ruiter, who gets falsely arrested and beaten up badly. Then a 107,000 Euros ransom is demanded.
