Great
saurioffagotta-359085 October 2023
The first episode of Our Flag Means Death Season 2 presents notable improvements. Stede's character development has made him a more engaging protagonist. The humor is more pronounced, enhancing the show's comedic appeal, and the storyline's stakes feel substantially higher. Overall, this season exhibits promising developments, and I anticipate the subsequent episodes with interest.

That being said, I think that as an introduction this seems like it's still setting things up and I'm excited to see where the show goes next. It seems like the show is really going to get crazy. Overall I'd give it an 8.5/10, maybe even a 9 is the rest of the season pays off.

...Intense

Warning: Spoilers
This episode--all three first episodes--are very intense. I honestly didn't expect it to be like this. I mean, Blackbeard !!!!! His entire crew !!!!!! It was harrowing. The things Ed did, to the crew no less, to IZZY...... It hurt to watch. I think it will always hurt to watch.

Still, I loved the moment where Izzy breaks down and Fang and Frenchie comfort him. It means so much to me. It's so beautifully directed and acted.

And everything Izzy tells Ed. I'm still surprised when I watch it, like wow, they really did. They actually did that. This is real and canon.

I was so happy to get the crew back !!!! But really sad to see Swede go :( Also the moment where Jim tells the story of Pinnochio to Fang when he's upset, it WARMS MY HEART SO MUCH !!! The post-credits scene too !!!!

A wild fast paced start

Warning: Spoilers
So much happens in this episode. I love the way we are introduced to zheng yi sao and the bits we get about how the divided crews have been surviving. Each of the characters has their own moment despite the introduction of so many new people and concepts.

Izzy's role in this episode stands out to me, and con o'neill's performance is phenomenal. Taika and con together are incredible, but its the scene of izzy crying in front of the crew that really breaks me. Especially when the scene goes on with izzy whining and jim and archie look so uncomfortable it seems like its meant to turn back into comedy, but my heart aches for that cringe fail first mate far too much to laugh at how pathetic he is.

Madeleine sami fits right in as if she had always been there as archie. Already obsessed with her.

I do feel like this episode is rushed. There is so much happening so quickly and i wish i had more time with the characters. This episode could have easily been 2 or even 3 episodes. Everything with prince ricky feels fairly disconnected from the rest of the episode, althought its clear we will be seeing more of him later. I do like ricky as a character though. He provides a great foil for stede. An echo of who he used to be but worse, or who everyone accused stede of being. For stede to ealk away from him and his poor choices without issue and for ricky to get consequences as a result of his arrogance is a really great way to show stedes growth and how his priorities have changed since s1e1.

Way to open season 2
mauramanninen5 October 2023
This was a perfect start for the new season, living up to any and all expectations! The show continues to blend and balance comedy and drama seamlessly, a feat that is all the more impressive as the story picks up from a much darker place than before.

Seeing all these characters again, and how their storylines have developed since we last saw them is in turns heart-breaking and joyful, and satisfying all around. Each and every performance sings, and the ensemble as a whole stands out. I fell in love with each and every one of them last season, and I am ready to renew my wows. This goes for the whole production.

An incredible start to season 2
llnpx35 October 2023
With season one being such an incredible feat, the pressure for season two has been huge. David Jenkins delivered with his directorial debut, Rhys and Taika gave comedic yet emotionally impactful performances. Madeiline Sami, a new addition to the cast, was able to find her place and hold her own. Her character, Archie, perfectly fit in yet was unique.

The season largely picks up where last season left off and throws so many unexpected treats at the viewers. Sophomore slump? The cast and crew of Our Flag Means Death don't even n is the meaning of the word.

The production being moved from LA to AoNZ is already paying off with beautiful cinematography and landscapes. Impressive work.

Screaming, crying, throwing up....
jeannepalmateer5 October 2023
Oh my goodness! The crew is back and Spanish Jackie has a new husband???? That's all I'll say. Goodness! Season one took a few episodes to truly get rolling along, but Season Two is starting with fire! The opening scene!?! Swoon and rolling on the floor laughing/crying? I was a little nervous to start the new season because of how much I enjoyed the first season, but after season two episode 1, I'm feeling good about what the writers and actors and the whole crew have in store for season two! Speaking of crew, the costumes on Blackbeards crew 👀👀👀👀 incredible! So excited to watch the next two episodes after work today!

Stede has returned to what's left of his crew; Edward navigates loss and hatred
genanetherwood8 October 2023
This first episode was perfect to start. You definitely get some of the humor, but the darkness and sadness of what the characters were left with are starting to bleed into view as it progresses. The new characters that are introduced are a joy and felt like they all fit right in. Special shout out to the amazing Leslie Jones as her character Spanish Jackie is given even more time to shine. She's hilarious. Prince Ricky is that naive sort of guy that wants glory and adventure, but is too ill-equipped. Seeing Stede's reaction to this character reveals just how much growth he has done from season 1.

Beautiful Start
emilyhankins8 October 2023
Everyone is doing an amazing job, both actors and crew have knocked it out of the park again - and then some. The humor and darkness are balanced expertly, and this first episode transitions us perfectly from where season 1 left off. The performances are exemplary - Rhys' choked up scream at the beginning absolutely knocked me out. The music choices are always spot on. When entering into a new season, there are always certain expectations and worries about achieving lightning in a bottle again, and I really think this first episode does a great job dissuading any fears of disappointment. It is a joy to see these characters again and watch their stories play out on the screen.

What a way to come back!
amberechaney6 October 2023
I've been on pins and needles waiting on this season ever since I finished season one and it delivers! It's at the same time exactly what I wanted and wholly unexpected.

As attached as I am to all the old crew members, I was also happy to meet some new characters who promise to be as complex and hilarious as all the others. The separate plotlines blend together seamlessly and both were full of laughs without minimizing the intensity of important moments.

Con O Neil as Izzy Hands is a stand-out for this ep, providing amazing nuance to the set up for season-long character development that I can't wait to see.

I can't wait to see where this season takes us!

A phenomenal start to season 2
c-1538411 October 2023
I have been infinitely excited for this series to return! This first episode follows on brilliantly from season one. The cinematography is glorious, with production having moved to stunning New Zealand. This episode features standout performances from Taika Waititi and Con O'Neill. Both are absolutely enthralling throughout this episode. The whole cast does a magnificent job of portraying their character development, balancing comedy with the darkening tone of the series brilliantly. I am loving seeing how the characters are developing and relating to each other. The chosen music is phenomenal. The songs complement the scenes perfectly and I have not been able to stop listening to these songs between rewatches. An incredible start for season two!

Ahhh!
ezrilopes6 October 2023
I've watched it three times already, I absolutely adore this episode. It was overwhelming and fast paced at first, but it's perfect to get us right back into the environment of the show. I adore Spanish Jackie in this, and Ed is brutal and terrifying. The set is also beautiful, New Zealand is beautiful and perfect for this show. I also love the introduction to Queen Zheng yi sao. Even though it's not historically accurate, the show runners have said it was never meant to be, and i can and will forgive it over and over again for the amazing interactions and clashing between pirate clans and cultures to give us these episodes and characters. I can't wait for the rest of the season.

Funny, Darker, Angsty, so Satisfying!
pkpthqnw8 October 2023
Cleverly written. So much packed into one episode. The only disappointment is how fast 30 minutes goes. Nearly all beloved characters are back. This episode made me laugh out loud, but could be upsetting for some folks, so tread carefully! Stede and crew are their quirky selves on a quest to find Ed and the rest of the crew. Stede leaving Ed has left trauma in its wake, Stede reuniting with one member of the crew makes him aware of some of the damage he has done. New characters Susan and Auntie...just fab. Meanwhile Ed appears insane and suicidal, causing serious trauma for his new crew. Izzy is transformed, in more way than one. Archie, new crew, befriends Jim, also transformed. So much character growth. But so much trauma! .

A perfect return!
rainbowdust-403598 October 2023
Where any return would satisfy our rabid and loyal crew this opener after so long was just a perfect return like coming home when you've been away for so long

Seeing the characters used to full potential and watching them grow felt so lovely as well as the comedy from the beginning with the sprinkling of darkness to catch us off guard and prepare us for what's to come

It's so well balanced and welcomes us back so brilliantly

Never again will a show mean so much while it tells its story and makes us laugh

There's also always the undercurrent of found family and finding somewhere where you're embraced and accepted

This show is so special so loved and we missed our boys

Thank you David Jenkins.

expertly mixing tragedy with comedy
vexbatch5 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This deals so well with Ed's devastated mental state, even going so far as to let Izzy, his First Mate for as long as we know, ask "what am I to you?" That exchange is so devastating, both for an audience and for Izzy, who professes his love and is then dismissed by an Edward who is clearly lost to his grief over the failed relationship with Stede Bonnet.

And on the other hand, we get Swede being added to the list of Jackie's husbands, a turn of events that seems to be wonderful for both of them! We get Jim retelling Pinocchio to Fang COMPLETE WITH THE VOICES, which is just delightful and a necessary levity for the crew of Ed's new ship. There is even a fantasy fight between Stede and Izzy that ends with Stede and Ed running towards each other like the ending of a movie, falling into each others arms.

An episode that really lives up to the name OFMD has given itself!

Raise hell forever and ever
blueruvy5 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
What an absolute banger way to start the new season! Any fears I may have had were proven wrong. The sense of humour, zaniness, absurdity, yet with the thrumming pulse of a big tender heart, are all still intact from season one.

I love Ruibo Qian's turn as Zheng Yi Sao. I mean, obviously representation galore. But also I love the sultry timbre of her voice, strong and powerful, and her facial expressions promise an awfully great performance to come.

Lovely to see the New Zealand coastline already being put to beautiful scenic use!

So happy to see Spanish Jackie be a part of it, and the Swede really is husband material, I'm glad he's getting his happy ending. One down.... several to go.

Also I already deeply dislike Ricky but you gotta give the actor his due, he threw everything into every line and it was great.

I think a lot of fans knew things aboard the Revenge would be pretty grim, but... wow. Like, wow. But I was so JAZZED to see Madeleine Sami. Between her and Ruibo we're going to be getting some good female contributions to the ensemble, which I know was one of the few notes many had about last season.

I really watched this one and thought, oh yeah, we are SO BACK. I knew this was going to be a wild, but great, ride.

Welcome back to my favorite pirates!
sandraachermann10 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
After the long wait for season two I was unsure, whether the new episodes would live up to my expectations. It is my favorite show after all and maybe in my head everything was way more perfect than it would be on screen.

I was delighted to discover that it was just as good as I had hoped, maybe even better! The pacing felt good, there were no times where it felt like time was just getting filled. The characters evolved in a believable way, that works for the story. Personally I adore the introduction of Queen Zheng Yi Sao. She adds a fresh breeze to the characters and is a wonderful addition to the cast.

Off to a Fantastic Start
noordinaryskeleton14 October 2023
Our Flag Means Death never disappoints! The cast is back and loveable as ever (even the ones you would least expect), and the story expertly navigates the serious and the silly. The soundtrack is phenomenal as always (gotta love a good bop for a pirate raid) , and the set production has really stepped up from last season, while still maintaining their signature, whimsical style. I am very excited to see where the plot goes from here, and how the characters will continue to evolve. I sincerely hope it will get renewed for a third and final season to round out a beautiful, touching show that has brought so much joy to myself and so many others, it is truly a singularity.

Funny, poignant, creative
jclarraga11 January 2024
Our Flag Means Death has become one of my favorite tv shows ever, and the start to season 2 only increased my deep appreciation for it. The perfect nuance between comedy, romance, and emotional development really comes together beautifully. The new characters introduced this season are funny and mesh in well with the season 1 cast. It was sad to see some familiar faces were less present in the show this season, but regardless I think David Jenkins pulled everything off beautifully. I LOVE the change in scenery! New Zealand was the perfect place to film in! Honestly, I sort of wish that they had filmed season 1 in New Zealand too!

Darker, deeper and still funny
sillimion3 November 2023
The first episode of season two is sees our characters after a time jump since the last season. As expected it is darker but at once gives hope for romance and lighthearted fun. The character development is already palpable and you can feel the coming journey for them. Apart from the original crew, now separated into two sides, one for the sad and heartbroken Blackbeard and one for Stede, we see the beloved character Spannish Jackie again and new characters as crewmember Archie and the mysterious Susie, who can she be? It's lovely to see them again and overcoming hardships and it's exciting to see where it will leed them.

we're so back (never left)
adgarcia-954386 November 2023
I was so nervous excited for s2 and from the opening dream sequence i knew we were so back! The ending of this ep then introducing the pirate queen who ended up being my favorite new character! From beginning to end i was gripped and laughing! I feel so sad for ed. But also he looks so good while breaking down.. i... anyways! An excellent return to form with the perfect balance of funny and drama. Ed and the kids at the wedding sequence set to strawberry letter 23 is chef's kiss. Taika's acting blew me away this season and while i love his big beard i'm glad we can now see his beautiful neck i mean whole face to better see his perfect acting choices.

Thrilled
mylifeiskindaok9 January 2024
I was so excited for season 2 and this episode proved once again why I love this show so much. Our Flag Means Death season 2 episode 1 was just as I'd hoped, witty, humorous, dark, and exciting. Seeing the dynamic with Blackbeard and his new crew was devastating, and I think it really expressed to us how his character was feeling. It was very emotional and chaotic and I think it really sets you into the mind of the characters at that time. The show is first and foremost a comedy, so even in the darkest parts I was still able to laugh. The set was amazing and it was so great to see Jackie'z again.

The adventure continues
kristenwilson-6394114 November 2023
Our heroes pick up where they left off last season, with Stede and much of his crew in straitened circumstances in the Republic of Pirates, while a heartbroken Ed wreaks havoc across the Caribbean with the weary crewmembers he kept on board the Revenge. We meet the odd "minor Prince" Ricky who leaves Spanish Jackie's the worse for wear while Stede's crew joins a new ship.

Stede thinks presenting himself in just the right way is key to the perfect reunion (as we see in the dream sequence that starts the episode-Stede is a "real pirate" with a beard and earring who wins a sword fight) but fears Ed is better off without him. Ed wants to make the entire Caribbean pay for the pain he's felt.

Justice for Izzy!!!
michellesharpe-169437 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Listen, did Izzy Hands basically bring all of the misfortune and pain that he endured this episode onto himself? Yes. Admittedly, if he had just been a supportive friend in the first season and had not shamed Ed into being a hypermasculine dick, all of this could've been avoided. That said! As someone who supports Izzy Hands' rights as well as his wrongs, I found the amount of violence that my boy endured in this episode to be excessive and rude. Con O'Neill continues to kill it and I'm glad he's being given more to do. I guess I should probably talk about other aspects of this episode.

All of the other characters continue to be good also.

an aching achy return of our favorite lovelorn pirates
larakelland9 November 2023
They're back, but with more heartache, longing, denial, sublimation, grief, and hijinks. Lots of hijinks. Many of last seasons characters are back, and a few new ones as well. The Gentleman Pirate is back to rectify his lost opportunity with love, and Blackbeard as Kraken is tearing up the Caribbean to assuage his sorrows. The other love connections from season one have been torn apart as collateral damage, and we are left to hope that they will be reunited. Spanish Jackie provides a respite for our castaways and provides a scene for the first episode and Stede's crew sets out to save up enough to resume the sailing life, which sets the season's arc in motion.

Seasson 2 Woohooo!
dangerslutx15 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Yay! Season two has started and it is a wonderful beginning to the series! The acting is fantastic across the board, from Stede and his surviving crew, to Blackbeard/Izzy and the crew of the breakup boat! This also includes the new characters we get introduced to!

The beginning scenes where funny. Surprising and an amazing start to season 2 that had me hooked from the beginning. It gave me everything I wanted and more!

SPOILERS BELOW!

. .

. .

. .

. .

. Seeing Stede and his half of the crew struggling with surviving without Stede wealth is fun and very silly. Their time at Jackie's bar is both endearing and hilarious! I wish we got to see Stede struggling without his wealth a bit more, but seeing certain members of the crew grow outside of it is fun. Oluwande's budding relationship with Zheng being a highlight on Stede's side.

Ed and Izzy's toxic downfall is peak television for me! Watching the crew gather together to support Izzy, who has been repeatedly mutilated and abused at the hands of Edward is so heartwarming, especially Jim.

As a horror fan, I adored the messed up relationship between Ed and Izzy. Ed's downward spiral is heartbreaking, spectacular and even more than I ever expected from the show. Ed's and Izzy's toxic failed marriage really is a highlight of the show. Be warned, it gets rough and is not for the soft of heart. The show should have had a warning!
