The start of the final series

Warning: Spoilers
After eight years 'Hustle' is finally coming to an end; we still have this one final series to enjoy though. The episode opens with a topical reference to the London Olympics as Mickey and the team persuade a woman that her daughter can light the Olympic flame… for a price! That con is wrapped up in the prologue and once the credits have finished it is time for this episodes main con; Alfred has witnesses an old lady in tears because she has sold her gold jewellery and has been given far less than it was worth in return. Clearly the scoundrel responsible needs to be taught a lesson and Mickey and his crew are just the people to do it. As luck would have it that days paper contains reports that a large quantity of gold from Col Gadaffi's hoard had gone missing in Libya. Not surprisingly their mark is interested when they tell him they have one hundred bars. As is always the case what makes the story interesting is seeing how they will go about convincing somebody that they can deliver what they promise without getting hurt when they don't. As well as the main story they have to deal with being banned from Eddie's Bar… he can forgive being conned but can't forgive the defacing of his photograph of former Liverpool football star Ian Rush!

This episode was a good opening to the series, although the story was fun to watch and cleverly explained it is just a variation on a theme we've seen before so perhaps it isn't a bad thing that the series is ending; best to go out while it is still good than to go stale like so many long running shows do. The regulars do a fine job as one would expect after all this time and guest star Paterson Joseph does a decent job as the unpleasant Dexter Gold. As always the production is very slick and there are enough laughs to keep me entertained.
