The last few days of 2015 are spent in reflection about the year that's just wrapping up and in anticipation of the year just ahead, at least for me, and since we had our ten best list last week, this week it's time for the runners-up, the fifteen films that also filled out our year. As always, I look at this list and I think it would make a perfectly spiffy top ten if that's how things had shaken out, which is to say that the only real purpose of any of these lists is to remind you of more of the experiences that were worth having in a theater. There are plenty of good films that aren't on either of my lists this year. That doesn't mean I didn't like them or they're not good. It just means that these films meant more to me for some reason. For now,...

2015 promises to deliver a wide variety of new and original programming - from a revamped version of a children's classic to new British fantasy and ambitious international thrillers.
But it would be remiss of us not to tip our hats to the huge roster of fan favourites heading back to our screens - these are Digital Spy's picks for the 15 best shows returning in 2015.
1. Broadchurch - ITV
It's been an agonising wait, but Chris Chibnall's BAFTA-winning thriller will return to our screens on January 5, with David Tennant and Olivia Coleman returning to front the cast as detectives Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller.
Marianne Jean-Baptiste, James D'Arcy, Charlotte Rampling and Torchwood's Eve Myles are among the new cast additions for series two, which promises to reveal why Alec is still in Broadchurch and what's next for Ellie (Coleman) after she uncovered her husband's dark side.

From long credits to bullet time, here are a few techniques and film conventions we don't see in the movies these days...
Over more than a century, cinema has built up its own storytelling vocabulary. Thanks to generations of intelligent and groundbreaking filmmakers, movies contain a rich and complex set of editing, filming and framing techniques, most of them so firmly embedded in our subconscious that we don't even think about them while we're sitting in our local multiplex.
Inevitably, there are some aspects of filmmaking that have changed considerably over time. New ideas and conventions continuously float in, while old ones become over-used and phase out as a result. It's the latter we're focusing on here: the filmmaking conventions and techniques that are either becoming rare, or have vanished altogether. Bear in mind that some of the things below may suddenly come back into vogue very soon, while the...

Way back in Dexter‘s second season, our anti-hero noted with surprise that his mask of normality was slipping. “People who never mattered before are suddenly starting to matter,” he said, uncharacteristically rattled. “It scares the hell out of me.”
You think you were spooked, Dex? That’s nothing compared to what fans of the murderous Showtime saga likely face as its final season bows this Sunday (9/8c). Given the series’ lethal nature, those who have grown to love and champion the Dark Passenger over the past seven seasons know that a tragic ending is a real possibility.

Entertainment Weekly’s newest issue spotlights the best of summer TV, and that unequivocally includes Showtime’s Dexter, which is on its last season. An awesome cover, some good nuggets from David Zayas, C.S. Lee and James Remar about their characters (Batista, Masuka and Harry Morgan), as well as some comments from Michael C. Hall and the men behind the final stretch of Dexter eps follow. We also uncovered a bevy of new images from the start of season 8, which you’ll find in the gallery below.
Spoilers for the start of Dexter’s eighth season follow, so obviously if you haven’t seen any parts of the previous 7 seasons, I’d stay away.
On The Ending:
Showrunner Scott Buck: “It feels like the exact ending we should be doing…Ideally it will make our audience sit back and see Dexter a little more clearly than before. It should...

The end will begin on June 30.
Showtime has released the first official, full-length trailer for Dexter Season 8, featuring brand new footage from this summer's episode, including a long look at Dr. Evelyn Vogel, a character played by Charlotte Rampling who specializes in the brains of psychopaths.
We also get an idea of just how strongly Deb has been affected by her murder of Laguerta, as she's arrested for DUI and stumbles into police headquarters toward the end of the promo with one frightening sentence: I want to make an official statement.

I'm So Excited (15)
(Pedro Almodóvar, 2012, Spa) Javier Cámara, Raúl Arévalo, Carlos Areces. 90 mins
Almodóvar responds to his country's economic woes with camp hysteria and Carry On humour. In many ways this airborne disaster farce – anarchic, absurdist, garishly stylish and gleefully debauched – is a return to the Spanish auteur's subversive roots. But there's a serious subtext to the silliness, and the metaphors are brought back down to earth for a satisfying landing.
The Eye Of The Storm (15)
(Fred Schepisi, 2011, Aus) Charlotte Rampling, Geoffrey Rush, Judy Davis. 119 mins
The imminent death of Rampling's matriarch throws an aristocratic family's dysfunction into relief in this Aussie drama, whose overstuffed story is redeemed by three watchable leads.

120 companies looking to buy films will attend the American Film Market for the first time, part of the more than 750 distributors from 75 countries that have registered for the only stand-alone theatrical feature film market (all others are attached to festivals) October 31-November 7 in Santa Monica. Korea (25), China (13), and the U.S. (11) lead the way with the most newcomers, AFM Managing Director and Independent Film & Television Alliance EVP Jonathan Wolf said in a release. “We are seeing a shift in the way sub-distributors acquire film as they steadily rely less on local distributors and more on direct acquisitions”, he said. “We also expect a significant increase in buyers from China.” AFM expects 1,500 individuals from these companies at the market from more than 70 countries. More than 420 features will screen including 77 world premieres and 306 market premieres. The numbers of prebuys are also looking good after their near demise in the financial crisis of 2008.

First, indieWIRE's Eric Kohn hosted a "Meet the New Directors" panel at the Film Society of Lincoln Center earlier this week and you can watch it here. It runs 63'12" and the guests are Jason Cortlund and Julia Halperin (Now, Forager); Emad Burnat and Guy Davidi (5 Broken Cameras); Adam Leon (Gimme the Loot); Kleber Mendonça Filho (Neighboring Sounds); Terence Nance (An Oversimplification of Her Beauty); Joann Sfar (The Rabbi's Cat); Joachim Trier (Oslo, August 31st); and Clarissa Knoll (Street Vendor Cinema).
And the Fslc has posted separate Q&A sessions with Leon (Gimme), Pablo Giorgelli (Las Acacias) and Gareth Evans (The Raid: Redemption), all on one page.
Meantime, we've entered the home stretch. New Directors/New Films rolls on through the weekend and closes on Sunday night with a surprise — whatever it may be, it'll probably rank a roundup of its own. That aside, here's where we wrap it up.
