Warning: Spoilers
The arc of Jiraiya remains on high level. Following last episode, Jiraiya prepares himself for a fight with no return. He calls the toad, Gerotora, who keeps the key to Naruto's seal from inside him. He obeys Minato's will and orders the toad to deliver himself to Naruto in case he dies. Gerotora is surprised and questions his decision, he doesn't think Naruto should have they key to unlock the seal that contains the Kyuubi. Because the last time Jiraiya tried to open the seal just a little, happened the incident where Naruto transformed in the four tailed cloak and caused the chest scar on his sensei. Gerotora doesn't think Naruto can control such power. But Jiraiya trusts Minato, he knew well his student, and looks like he sealed the yang half of the Kyuubi on his son, knowing that one day he could control that power and use him for good purposes. Jiraiya also says that he doubts that the incident from 16 years ago was natural. He recently started thinking that someone invoked the Nine Tailed Fox, they know only Madara Uchiha could do that (who seemingly died in a battle with The 1st Hokage), but now he has a bad feeling. Anyway, these are Jiraiya's thoughts, he's wise and realized that bad things happened and will happen, and so he trusts Naruto, like Minato did. Jiraiya then finally leaves the hideout inside the toad, and sends it with the prisoner to Konoha, where Ibiki can extract him more information about Pain and Amegakure. This first part was excellent as shows some of Jiraiya's last measures in case he dies. He feels his time is coming. Giving the key to open Naruto's seal, to Naruto himself, it's like one of the last messages he has for him. It's his farewell. And considering Minato's will, revealed to Jiraiya, now he gives Naruto the key to meet his father and his mother. It's going to be tearful.

Using Tezune's husband as disguise, Jiraiya runs through the village to find Pain. Konan detects him and then talks to Pain. She doesn't seem shocked to see her old sensei, and Pain says that it brings him memories. Still, he considers him an intruder and feels nothing about him. Konan says she will distract him until he arrives. Pain coldly asks her to kill Jiraiya if she can. Soon, she meets Jiraiya and attacks him with a paper spear. The toad hermit avoids it and let Tezune's husband escape. He's surprised to see Konan and praises the woman she became. He tells that during the war he received words from them and their actions, but later he thought they died given some news. Konan is quiet, unshakeable, and refuses to talk about Pain. When he questions her present, that she used to be the kindest of the three orphans, she says that he doesn't know what happened since the day he left. Jiraiya is saddened because their students lost their way and joined Akatsuki. All this talk happens while Jiraiya uses fire element and toad's fluid to counter Konan's paper attacks. Then, Pain arrives with another body (long orange hair), and meets Jiraiya. The villain explains that now they have different points of view. Jiraiya recognizes Nagato in Pain, given the Rinnegan. He is disappointed, he didn't even receive a warm welcome after what he did for them in three years. Konan wonders if he regrets stopping Orochimaru from killing them. Jiraiya doesn't regret that, but he hoped they would grow to make the world better. When he asks about Yahiko, Nagato coldly remembers his name, and says that he died many years ago. Then, Pain decides to explain his plan, thinking his sensei is going to die anyway. He tells that in order to bring peace, he will use a special jutsu, powered by the Bijuus chakra, to exterminate complete towns in a blur. Then, he will give that power to the villages, therefore, fear will spread among other villages, and eventually, wars will stop. Everyone is going to suffer, feel pain, to grow like he did. Jiraiya is stunned to learn Nagato's reasoning, and is shocked when he hears him talking like a god. Nagato thinks of himself as someone who grew up in pain, and then, trascended to become a god. Konan obeys everything he says, and calls him a god as well. Jiraiya realizes he can't reason with his pupil anymore, and prepares for the battle by invoking the warrior toad Gamaken. Nagato makes his own summoning. The storyline keeps getting better. The villain, Nagato, has become a cruel, obsessed, ruthless, presumptuous, self worshipping, egotistical being, who believes he has vision to impose to the world. He wants to extend what he did to Amegakure to the rest of the world. And poor Jiraiya, he's stunned and disappointed that his former students grew badly to be like that. He never expected this turn out, even if Yahiko died by war, this wasn't enough reason to turn Nagato into a monster. It's also sad like he feels, the caring for those three orphans for three years, and now he's welcomed like a villain. Not even Konan, who was the kindest, treated him like he would have expected. For Jiraiya, this feels like a failure.
