The charming noel
TheLittleSongbird19 January 2024
'Noel Next Door' (2022)

Opening thoughts: Despite loving Christmas and Christmas films, expectations were a bit mixed here for 'Noel Next Door'. Really liked the concept, Hallmark have done many good Christmas films in the past and have liked Corey Sevier in other things. Have never personally been much of a fan of Natalie Hall, Hallmark has a variable track record when it comes to Grinch-like characters and 2022 has been very hit and miss for Hallmark (with Hall and Sevier's previous film 'Road Trip Romance' being a major misfire).

Luckily, 'Noel Next Door is a winner and a long way from a misfire. It doesn't start off very promisingly to be perfectly honest, but it really was well worth sticking with. It was a good start for the 2022 Countdown to Christmas block and is a million times better than 'Road Trip Romance'. Both Hall and Sevier come off well here and there is actual chemistry this time which already makes this a better film.

Bad things: As said, 'Noel Next Door' didn't start off too good at all. The dialogue is excessively cheesy and the story didn't really get much momentum for a while. But it was the emphasis on the supporting characters that hurt it most, and these characters are annoying and over-played. The son particularly.

Would have liked to have seen Hall and Sevier on screen more and longer.

Good things: However, there is a lot that is done really well. Have personally yet to see a better performance from Hall, she has never looked more natural or never this charming. She doesn't come over as too over sweet or too self absorbed and she has one of her few likeable and relatable characters. Was also not expecting Sevier to be this good, he has a difficult type of role here that has been overacted of performed stiffly elsewhere and has been written with too many exaggerated character flaws and nowhere near enough character growth. None of that happened here. The two have strong chemistry here that is sweet and easy to get behind despite it not being used enough.

Also did like their characters, ones that were true to life and even their flaws were easy to understand. The types of roles are familiar but given fresh slants. The supporting cast do become more subtle and comfortable later. The story didn't come as too predictable and it was light hearted and charming while also being moving and the harsher elements of the scenario aren't played too safely or overdone. The script isn't stilted generally and doesn't become too sugary or cheesy.

It looks attractive, especially the scenery and the festive decor is nostalgic. The music doesn't overbear and has variety, while the direction while not distinguished is more than capable. Did appreciate that the final act didn't feel contrived or the ending too neat.

Closing thoughts: Overall, not great and the weak start stops it from being one of the very best 2022 Hallmark films but good and worth sticking with if given a chance.

7/10.

Noel Next Door
allmoviesfan5 November 2022
Hallmark's first Christmas movie of the 2022 festive season will be difficult to top. As bad a some of these made-for-TV Christmas movies are, when Hallmark (or Lifetime and GAC Family, for that matter) get it right, they really get it right. And that is definitely the case here as rising stars Corey Sevier and Natalie Hall star as neighbours going through things close to Christmas. Sevier as Jeremy, a Scrooge type of guy who seems to hate the world, is struggling from a stroke that has left him partially paralysed and separated, whilst Noel is a single mother (with a young son) whose ex-husband is marrying his mistress and wants his son with them on Christmas morning.

The chemistry between Sevier and Hall is great. This isn't their first rodeo together and it shows. Their efforts are helped by a very good script, too. Sometimes the actors are good in these films but are let down by poor scripts. Not so here. Sevier is particularly good, portraying in a sensitive manner a person with a disability. He is the star of Noel Next Door, and deserves all the plaudits he receives. This was a good one.

You can still have Christmas with imperfection.
MIssM1924 October 2022
Noelle is a single mother trying to give her son Henry the best Christmas ever after an ugly divorce. One day, while working, she encounters Jeremy and they hit it off. Meanwhile, Henry is playing around the neighborhood and he encounters grumpy Mr Gear who is not so kind with him.

It's a movie with real elements. An ugly divorce with the possibility of a fight for custody, a mistress, a grown man with a disability and the consequence of that. A grown man passing out on the couch after a drink and a woman buying tampons. Never thought I would see that in a Hallmark movie.

I thought the character's relationship developed quite naturally. Which I appreciate. I would have liked to see more scenes of the two of them together, but the chemistry was there.

It was a good start for the Christmas season.

Annoying moms and awful son
hallmarkmov26 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The movie starts off pretty bad. I was on the side of the grumpy guy. The annoying kid who could have kicked the soccer ball into the window, taunting the neighbour, coming over to threaten him over his lost bunny, and the mom was on her son's lying side. I would send him back to his dad and mistress. If the sun is old enough to terrorize neighbours, he doesn't need his aunt baby sitting him and yet he is able to stay home alone when his mom goes on dates. Not sure why the ex wants the son so bad. He clearly had a lot of free time to run around outside and not know where his bunny is. Then the mom's sister is just as bad with three girls harassing people to listen to her children's singing? Do you all think people don't have lives and things to do besides bending over backwards for your kids? I also feel bad for the main actress who's gone from playing "fun single 20 year old" to now a single mom with no future in less than a month. Can't all be Candace Cameron bure playing a 20 year old forever. There is also the supermarket mom acting like the man is a monster cause his injured arm from his stroke? It is not noticeable especially under a winter coat. His ex wife also made it seem like he looked completely different because of his stroke? On a side note these apartments look so familiar. I think I've passed them in ottawa!

A partially successful attempt at inclusivity
keyrose-0807524 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
As a rehabilitation health care worker, I was pleased that Hallmark included a character that had lived through a life-altering health event. I was simply left wishing that had been explored in more depth. This could have been a great forum for educating the audience in stroke after-effects. Why was Jeremy's left arm tighter during his blind date? How realistic is it that he would be permitted to drive, given the perceptual deficits that are part of so many strokes. Could his curmudgeonly demeanour be a direct stroke effect?

The story line was clever; bringing the two sides together at the chance door encounter caused me to chuckle.

I, too would have liked to see the parent explore with the child the issues of lying, vengeance; this could have gone beyond "causing trouble" and named a wrong. I was pleased, though, when the child unprompted offered his own apology.

Will be hard to top this in 2022
montgomerysue23 October 2022
Once in awhile Hallmark pairs a couple of talented performers who have just the right chemistry to make any roles they play look natural and real. Think Kimberley Sustad and Paul Campbell. Here, Hallmark has done it again. Natalie Hall and Corey Sevier are excellent, playing neighbors whose lives become connected on two different levels due to the rather unique circumstances they are personally in. How they reconcile those levels is what makes this story refreshing and different. This is also an extremely well written script with dialogue that is clever and true-to-life. But, it only works because Hall and Sevier and the rest of the cast deliver their words and feelings in such a realistic and natural fashion. Callum Shaniker playing Hall's son is particularly good.

It is nice to see Hallmark branch out with a Christmas movie that contains some unusual subjects - here, Sevier is playing Jeremy, a recovering stroke victim who is a classical music composer, and Sevier does so very effectively.

To top it off, you really feel like it's the Christmas season because there is real snow, bare trees, and frost coming out of the actors' mouths when they speak. The outdoor scenes were NOT filmed in the summer/fall and then made to look like winter. And the settings are quite good.

Finally, director Max McGuire does a wonderful job here making a film that is intriguing, sentimental, and warm-hearted, yet still humorous. It all just snaps, crackles, and pops along, particularly due to the terrific performances by Hall and Sevier. This may be the best of Hallmark's 2022 Christmas crop.

Fresh start
Jackbv12323 October 2022
Countdown to Christmas is here and this is the first premiere of 2022.

This movie really doesn't follow any of the common plotlines other than a divorced mother having a conflict with dad over Christmas custody and that's really a minor thread here. Some movies in this genre have a hidden identity factor in them, but this movie approaches that differently. The movie is crammed with all the Christmas activities like baking cookies, snowball fights, a Christmas pageant, and so on. There are a couple, but it's not crammed.

No one is hiding an identity, but there is something about Jeremy that the audience knows from the beginning, but Noel doesn't, namely that Jeremy is the one her son is having problems with in the neighborhood. You could also say Jeremy doesn't realize who Noel is. It's a neat trick that the writers don't let the two discover that until way past the halfway point. That is a good scene when everyone is stuttering at each other.

Noel is an angel of a woman. There are several examples with one of the big ones being a spoiler related to her ex. Natalie Hall does a good job with this part - I think one of her better ones in this type of movie. She and Cory Sevier have quiet chemistry.

There is some humor in this move, I think Hall is the better comedian and Sevier more the foil of the jokes. The humorous moments sometimes border on the silly, but not overly so.

I'm disappointed with two things as far as this being Hallmark and they are about good old common sense values, maybe even call them family values. It is interesting that this movie has already resorted to this kind of values when Jeremy makes the jerk at the diner apologize to Noel. Why should he apologize? Because he was insulting her as a lady. Yet later in the movie there are two things I would say belong on the same level. 1 - Jeremy gets passed out drunk on hard liquor. This is a strike against this movie being good for children, which it could be. 2 - Noel lets Henry off for lying without any consequences. Given the situation, I could understand light consequences, but there should have been something. Henry went beyond the bounds of a rambunctious kid more than once and clearly lied. These criticisms have nothing to do with what many reviewers complain about Hallmark going woke in the past few years. These values have nothing to do with that, although lack of consequences seems to be more common among younger parents than it was for parents years ago.

This is a decent move. It is still something that most of the family can watch and it doesn't have the feel of a formula driven story. Some of the scenes are funny. Time will tell if I watch it again next season, but I think I might.

Noel Next Door is Realistic and Warm
wayfind22 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I just watched this movie, and it was such a satisfying experience. Before I go on, I want to apologize for an earlier review in which I said Natalie Hall can't act. Apparently, that was simply because the movie I was reviewing then - a dopey little nonsensical film called "Fly Away with Me" - gave the actors nothing to work with.

Natalie Hall was great in "Noel Next Door" as a newly divorced mom raising her son. Corey Sevier, who can always be relied upon to give an outstanding performance, went even beyond that in this role. He performance was so true and moving.

I loved the realistic settings of this movie. The romance didn't blossom on a tropical island, on a rugged mountain, or in an ice castle. The pair, unaware that they were neighbors in a condo community, met in a diner, and again in the local drugstore.

The chemistry between the two actors was terrific, and when the character, Noel, told her sister that what she felt for Sevier's character, Jeremy, was not a spark but "a flame," I believed her.

They both played the instant mutual attraction extremely well. (The script and direction were great. There was no coy, goofy, unauthentic stumbling over objects or words. Those scenes in other movies often feel so artificial.)

I loved the true-to-life dialogue and honest reactions of the characters. For instance, when things go terribly awry, (as they must at some point in a Hallmark movie!) Sevier's character goes home and downs a couple of glasses of what appears to be vodka and falls asleep on the couch. Some of us may be teetotalers, but I think most of us can relate to the feelings!

Their difficulties, which involve conflict between Noel's young son and Jeremy (who doesn't realize the boy is her son,) wind up being resolved in a very believable and satisfying way.

I keep using the word "satisfying" because it's so nice to see a romance you can really imagine ordinary people in any community experiencing. No one is a rising sports star or a once-famous author.

This is just an excellent movie. The words that come to mind are: honest, worthy, classic, relatable, moving. You'll love it.

Nice festive movie
lisafordeay26 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Noel Next Door is a made for TV festive Hallmark movie starring Nataile Hall and Cory Sovier. A young woman who happens to be a single mother to a teen named Henry lives next door to a composer named Jeremy who suffered a stroke last Christmas. At first Jeremy doesn't get along with the young woman's son who constantly makes his life a living hell but like in alot of romantic films love blossoms between Henry's mom and Jeremy. Will they get together in the end?.

Overall I enjoyed this film. The story was nice, the acting was good along with the chemistry between Nataile Hall and Cory Sovier.

Good.

Flawed but trying
jmgimbel24 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Refreshing honest moments both in tragedy and humor. It's a step forward for Hallmark to include realistic messy divorce, both leads are divorced and not in the usual problem-free Hallmark style. His wife left him in his darkest hour, hers is a cheating narcissist. I appreciate this and the realistically salty humor. The execution of the grinch story is odd though. The son is obviously dealing with fallout from the split and acting out. The mom is clueless in this regard as he needs help and is the one being a jerk slamming soccer ball against his house included. Would like to see more attempts at real issues in these movies.

Adapted from a novel
VetteRanger23 October 2022
The novel was "How the Grinch Stole My Heart".

I read the Kindle sample and the novel does NOT start out like a Hallmark movie ... more like the now abandoned Skinemax fare. LOL

But this story goes beyond the normal Hallmark fare. It's not about abandoning the city for a small town, saving a business, putting on a Christmas parade/pageant/event, or the girl moving on from a bad boyfriend.

Instead it's a story of a damaged man and a woman mired in a bad divorce. It's a classic antithetical romance, but where the man and woman like each other in person but hate each other remotely. Nice twist. In that way it's a bit like Pillow Talk, except here no one is pretending.

It's a story of recovery and redemption, and it's one we're likely to watch many times in the passing years.

I'm the biggest nathaliehall fan
hypzrkunt6 November 2022
Her last two Christmas movies lacked real substance. While she and Corey Seiver we're good together in both movies. This one. Just came together in the end in a hurry. They built the story and felt like they rushed the end. Ms hall was near perfect self in the role and mr seiverwas good but I the writing or scope of the script was off.

In their lady movie I think the stars overacted a little in the beginning. In this one it was 100 percent not their issue.

I say more Nathalie hall and maybe put her one of the mystery series but the writing needs not to be rushed.. it should be more likeJolly Good Christmas which was excellent.

Score 9 on intentions, 3 on execution.
gfrasmd23 October 2022
Single mom falls for a grouchy disabled musician. Casting Cory Sevier, an always capable actor, and charming Natalie Hall. This film has the ingredients for a beautiful Christmas story. Unfortunately, the details are inconsistent and the love story misses the opportunity to show deep, evolving feelings, which could have made it credible and engaging. Jeremy's harshness and kindness, Noelle's infatuation and resentment, her son's brattiness and conversion are too extreme and feel superficial. And, what with a neighbor who is badly mistreated and keeps doing services beyond his responsibility? And a diner's waitress, single mother, who lives in a luxurious house? And two people who develop reciprocal feeling in a diner and never even suspect they live next door? And the victim of a stroke, severe enough to completely disable the left upper limb and seriously impair the lower one, who manages to run or play kick-ball, supporting his weight with a right-side cane?

Essentially, a would-be-sweet tale, managed with little finesse and attention to logic. Not enough, in my book, to be rated a successful attempt.

Excellent Holiday Fare
drbeeson22 October 2022
Nice blending of the traditional "Scrooge" theme with a modern day tale of divorce, single parenting, and disability challenges. Very well done. Excellent writing, acting and character development. Natalie Hall is a joy to watch and, as always, a master of facial expressions. Corey Sevier's portrayal of a stroke victim is realistic and moving. Having had a father who suffered a similar stroke in real life at about the same age as Corey's character, I can identify with the impact it had, not only on his personality, but also on his general attitude toward life itself. Both Corey's and Natalie's performances were spot on. Highly recommend.

Loved it!
michelle-plassing4 November 2022
I love these Christmas movies. They are usually a bit hit and miss, but I was pleasantly surprised. This one ticked all the boxes. The acting was really good, they had natural chemistry and I couldn't stop smiling the whole way through. Their reactions to each other felt organic and natural. The feelings it gave me is exactly what I want from a Christmas movie. The story line was believable and the romance was just enough. It was the acting that really sold it for me though. It may seem a bit daft commenting like this over a Christmas movie of this type, but compared to some I've seen it really was worth watching.

The adorable couple can't save this depressing story about bad blind dates and divorces.
cgvsluis12 December 2023
I grow weary of the divorced storylines at Christmas time...especially in a Hallmark holiday movie and as lovely as Natalie Hall (Noelle), I don't want to see her having a yelling match with her ex-husband about custody at Christmas.

I thought Hallmark was supposed to sell the fantasy of the perfect family? This was so far from that...bad dates, rude people, and everyone is unhappily divorced. Corey Sevier (Jeremy Geer), who is also a great actor, plays the Christmas Scrooge in their complex and he is supposed to be excused because his wife divorces him after he has a stroke. The truth is he is vilified and misunderstood, but kind of acts a bit Jekyll and Hyde.

I kind of objected to some of the things lumped in on the blind date...like not wanting to put bad things in his body made him a bad person somehow?

My main objection is the bickering of the divorced couple and just the depressing topics, which prevent me from recommending this to fellow romantics.

A Good Start to the Christmas Movie Season
rebekahrox26 October 2022
Noel Next Door was excellent. A youngish recently divorced waitress meets handsome partially paralyzed stroke victim who is sweet and kind (he gives her a 200% tip on his takeout order) and they are instantly attracted to each other. Her name is Noelle. Yes, really. Meanwhile, her tween son has several run-ins with the neighborhood scrooge who has recently moved into the neighborhood. In addition to insisting the condominium complex take down their Christmas tree, slamming his door in the faces of some little kid carolers, and walking around with an angry disgusted face all the time, he yells at and threatens young Henry who continually kicks his soccer ball against the wall of his condo. Noelle's son is a nice boy at home but does have a bit of a bratty side. In other words, he acts like a real kid. Little do the two know, while they fall in love, that he is actually the Christmas-hating neighborhood grouch with an anger management problem, and she is the incompetent mother of a mean little punk.

The tension builds throughout the movie in anticipation of the two neighbors meeting in person and discovering each others' true identities. Meanwhile, they grow more and more attached and happy with each other. It is handled very well, as the big moment doesn't come until about the 75% mark and their reactions are pretty hilarious and well-acted. In addition to her work, her son, and her new relationship, Noelle has to deal with an ex-husband who is a one-man asshole parade. He threatens her with a lawyer when she won't surrender her court-appointed Christmas day with young Henry to him and his mistress at their old home. There is some blind date comedy (Are you one of those people who believes the Earth is round?) and some heart-tugging moments as well.

Both Corey Sevier and Natalie Hall were terrific. I still don't like Natalie's hair and makeup, but she did well in a more mature down-to-earth role than she is usually given. Joanna Douglas plays her sister and she was lovely and appealing as always. She needs to be given a lead role with Hallmark if she is even interested. Corey had the difficult job of being a bit of a jerk on one hand, and a sympathetic romantic lead on the other. It didn't hurt that they had a good script to work with. It dealt with serious situations with a nice blend of comedy, drama, and romance along with a good message and plenty of Christmas Spirit to spare.

Terrible
sln-484593 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Some of this storyline is unbelievable in the sense that it's just dumb. The guy had a stroke and the writer way over did how people react to his arm *facepalm*. The kid is a brat! I wouldn't be happy if someone was kicking a ball on the side of my home. The blind date guy sums up why this country is a mess. Just watching this movie shows the entitlement of some people and why it's impossible to have a conversation with anyone.

I did not feel like I was watching a Christmas movie. The only thing that felt like Christmas was the Christmas decor in a very expensive house that a single mother with a waitressing job could afford.

That kid lying and causing issues really annoyed me. The fact that the mother was blind to his behavior made me not like her either. He has nothing to be sorry for *insert eye roll*. That's why kids are out of control because people don't make their children apologize for bad behavior.

This was not a typical Hallmark Christmas movie that is have been watching for 30 years. I will stick to the old reruns.

Sweetly funny Hallmark movie that actually has a heart!
gretl-762379 November 2023
This Hallmark movie actually has a heart! The tough situations are realistic - guy whose wife left him when he had a stroke; woman whose husband cheated on her; preteen who is struggling with the changes in his life. I'm so tired of the superficial holiday movies that are all the same. This was a refreshingly real change of pace. Of course, it's Hallmark, so it's cheesy, but I really appreciate the portrayal of a disability and inclusion of some mild grittiness. Also, kudos to Hallmark for poking fun at flat-earthers/science deniers - didn't expect that! The movie did a great job being sweetly funny. Overall, I am quite impressed and this will be a repeat watch each year.

Great, Touching Hallmark Presentation!
consubforever18 December 2023
This is one of the best Hallmark Holiday offerings. The stars are great and the storyline is fascinating. Natalie Hall has to be one of the most appealing and beautiful young women featured in Hallmark movies. The young actor portraying her son does very well, too and the evolution in his relationship to chief protagonist is an interesting progression. Sometimes, the Hallmark Holiday features stretch credulity and may come off as simplistic, but "Noel Next Door" comes off as plausible. The dialogue is fairly realistic and snappy. The last ten minutes are moving and satisfying for the viewer. I highly recommend it.

Horrible plot and horrible people
CatherineBradley042 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is so bad that it made me write my first ever review.

All the characters are static one note with no arc and unlikeable expect for Jeremy which the movie spend the whole runtime trying to vilify.

Look I understand that this is a W/Hallmark movie but there is absolutely no redeeming qualities to be found here unlike other movies put out by the same company.

The movie as a whole can be summed up as a poor man who uses a cane and has a busted arm being continuously harassed by a child until finally, he reaches his limits and goes to calmly inform his mother. The mother, then flips out and sides with her lying child and then the guy is encouraged to apologize and force him to amend himself in the standard of the community.

For the love of anything Christmas watch a different movie, I love so much of Hallmark and this is a bad start to the 2022 Christmas countdown. I only hope that their other output will be an improvement.

Nice change
rebecca-gzym9 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed this one. I'm at a point where I am watching my favorites over and over so giving a new one was a change up. I'm really glad I gave it a shot. It's a love story, of course, but the problems that the leads have are real and believable. The disability from a stroke can be really daunting and at a young age, it's very believable that it would make someone that bitter. Natalie Hall is a very likable actor and did well with this character. I have seen Corey Sevier in other Hallmark xmas movies and this is by far my favorite with him in the lead. Some reviewers say they didn't have chemistry, but I really disagree. I thought the balance of her falling for him without making him feel like a charity case was good. And on the other side, he was bitter about life, but didn't throw a fit when, for example, she took his coat off for him. The son was a brat, but that was the point. Others were annoyed by this....he is also going through tough changes. All in all, I say watch it! A nice break from an event planner ending up with her high school sweetheart 😜

No chemistry
LtlHippo23 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't see any chemistry between the two leads. Add in a precocious little kid, more like a brat. I mean, why does he pick that guys place to kick his soccer ball against? The guy had every right to get upset. The kid just kept coming back. So how did the rabbit get in the guys condo? Why does the guy treat it like a rabid pitbull? What kind of kid sticks a toothpick in the keyhole? How could they not figure out who each other was with the stupid notes. And wow, what kind of money does she have, that's a gorgeous condo. Must have made out like a bandit with the divorce. Certainly couldn't afford it working at a diner. Ok off to watch We Wish You a Married Christmas, I really like the leads in that one.

Tender, moving, hilarious, inspired...
MickyG33328 November 2022
8.1 stars.

Ah yes, very nice change of pace, change of atmosphere, and theme. I feel this is not solely a Christmas movie, it's a drama about an unfortunate chain of events that usurps a man's happiness. Not your garden-variety holiday film. 'Noel Next Door' is a reprieve from the mundane viewings I've been exposing myself to for the past week. This is my new second favorite of the 32 Hallmark Christmases so far this year.

The leading man is a very good looking well known Hallmark guy, but this time he's a stroke victim, his left arm doesn't function very well, and he uses a cane. Our main gal likes him very much, and the attraction matures in the midst of difficult circumstances. She has not seen his really grouchy side, but everyone else who encounters him knows him as the neighborhood scrooge.

As the story continues, more and more unfavorable incidents are piling up against him, various incidents of scroogery. When she finds out he is the ugly and unapproachable beast that everyone else knows him to be, will she have ample patience and heart to forgive him and restore the relationship?

There are at least 3 laugh out loud comedy moments, and equally touching, tearful moments. This is not a sad movie, it started with a shade of melancholy and delivers a most inspiring conclusion. What a trip. Bravo!

A must see every Christmas.

This is a really lovely and good movie. I loved it! I was surprised by Corey Seviers role, which he played great! Recommend to watch it!

It's a completely new idea for a Christmas love story, which I didn't expect. I think the main roles are perfectly casted and it all fits perfectly together. Corey Servier is very cute in this role and it's a blast to watch it. It shows for me, that he really is a great and emotional capable actor. Natalie Hall is also very great an gorgeous. Together they make this film special an magical. I really loved watching it. I think its one of Coreys best roles in the past few years.
