A Gripping Descent into Darkness
cutie720 October 2023
"Red Rooms," the 2023 Canadian thriller, grips you from the first frame and doesn't let go until the final credits roll. The plot weaves a web of suspense and obsession around the high-profile trial of Ludovic Chevalier, a notorious serial killer. What sets this film apart is its brilliant direction, which skillfully navigates the fine line between horror and psychological thriller. The tension builds relentlessly, leaving you on the edge of your seat, eager to uncover the dark secrets that lie beneath the surface. The cinematography is hauntingly beautiful, capturing the eerie atmosphere of the story while maintaining a visceral connection to the characters' emotions.

At the heart of "Red Rooms" lies a captivating exploration into the psyche of Kelly-Anne, a character whose obsession with the case blurs the boundaries between reality and her own morbid fantasies. This journey delves deep into the mind of a serial killer groupie, a character study that is as disturbing as it is engrossing. The film doesn't shy away from the uncomfortable truths of human fascination with the macabre, painting a raw and unflinching portrait of a woman who becomes entangled in a sinister quest for the missing video of a murdered 13-year-old girl. The performances are nothing short of exceptional, with the lead actress delivering a tour de force performance that brings Kelly-Anne's complex character to life with haunting authenticity. "Red Rooms" is a fantastic entry in psychological thrillers genre, offering a chilling yet thought-provoking experience that will linger long after the credits have rolled.

Why all the hype?
luizrenatomazzalima15 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The main character is extremely gifted, she is a model which is where she makes money, but she's also a professional poker player, cryptocurrency investor, programmer and an extremely talented hacker, you may think why or how is she such an expert in all this areas but you have to content with the "she's spends all the day at the computer" explanation, she's obsessed with a serial killer who is being charged of brutally killing and recorded the deaths of 3 young girls, but her real obsession is with one of the videos that not even the police was able to find.

One thing about this movie is that by the middle of it, in a scene where she shows to her only friend the 2 snuff movies that she has on her computer that Ludovic (which is the guy that is being prosecuted) is in fact the responsible for murdering the girls, she shows it to her friend who is a fanatic by Ludovic and defends him at any costs until she sees those videos and realize that she was wrong all of the time, and at the end she is even seen at some TV show talking about her 'past' as a ex-fan of Ludovic talking about the reasons of why she thought that he was innocent which is at least an explanation to her obsession.

But at any point is explained why Kelly-Anne is so obsessed with this case, this guy and the lost video, I mean I understand that is a critic of the whole true crime "culture" and the bizarre fascination that some people have with these kind of cases but damn is such a meaningful critic that just don't justify the actions of the character.

Anyway this is at least a beautiful shot film and the direction is also good, the performances of the whole cast was very impressive and I would recommend for anyone to see this movie and take they own conclusion, since is not a bad movie I just don't think it's this good.

Dark Web
billcr1217 November 2023
This was right up my alley as it combined two of my obsessions; serial killers and computers.

A young model with a resemblance to a murdered teenage girl attends the trial of the suspected murderer. She meets a fellow courtroom enthusiast and they a join the maddening crowds at the spectacle.

The suspect is kept in a room within the courtroom and he is kept behind glass.

The model is an internet geek and soon learns of the dark web where supposed snuff films are available at auction for the right price. She hacks her way into that world in order to uncover the missing video of one of the victims.

Red Rooms is a realistic portrayal of the dangers of modern technology.

Great start, interesting direction, but the plot leaves a lot to be desired.
mourmouka18 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Film starts with a single shot that lasts minutes, using a Steadicam, no music, showing a courtroom and jumping from the monologue of prosecutor to the defendant and finishing by zooming in to the protagonists face. Plante shows great taste in his direction by borrowing from the best: Hitchcock, Scorsese, Polanski, Kubrick, Fincher.

My main problem was, as other reviewers mentioned, the failure of the script in portraying the main character as a person with, motivation, feelings, values, substance. The story is told from her perspective but we learn nothing about her, thus making her actions and the whole story confusing and meaningless from a psychological standpoint. As the story moves forward, we get more and more confused about what she is doing and mainly "why". I don't have a problem with psychologically ambiguous characters unless their ambiguity has a psychological background.

According to the writer - director, this was a movie about the true crime fans and their obsession with violence. But is this character a real representative of this type of people?

In any case this movie was a breathe of fresh air, especially with tons of mediocre thrillers coming out every week. The soundtrack, cinematography, acting was A-Grade.

Favorite movie at CIFF
ahung13 October 2023
I saw 23 films at CIFF & this was my top pick. So thoroughly detailed, from the beginning (seemingly) 1-shot take, to how the story and characters are developed, to the 2 lead actresses (Juliette Gariépy, Laurie Babin) and the entire cast being so believable in their roles. I loved that instead of showing horrific gruesome scenes, you already know and hear the scenes just by seeing the 2 actresses act with their eyes and faces. The depiction of the dark web & related online conversations seems incredibly real. I'm not on the dark web but have been actively engaged since the mid-90s with how people speak online especially using anonymous usernames. The ending did cause intense excited conversations between my friends & I, as to exactly the personality and motives of the main character. As a side note, my friends & I met the director Pascal Plante at CIFF & he was so friendly & humble. I've noticed that the films we enjoyed the most were by the directors who were incredibly humble about their work. Anyhow, this film kept us engaged with every single second.

Most of the dramatic European films , even if they come by the way of Quebec ) , are always deep ,dark , disturbing , philosophical and somewhat nihilistic in their approach to almost anything . That's the main reason , why I always was fascinated with European cinema...Said that , this particular title ,as much as I wanted It to be astonishing and deeply touching ( living in Quebec myself))) , somehow It still left me not very satisfied ... Difficult to understand exactly why ... Just something somewhere didn't fully clicked for me ... Nevertheless , definitely worth it to watch it at least once .

That was one emotional rollercoaster

Warning: Spoilers
Fantastic piece of art. Acting was just wonderful. Main protagonist ist one hell of an actress. Story is really disturbing and the end is just.... Wow. For me, this was one great cinema. For the most of the part you are just left wondering, why she does what she does, unti the very end. 10 is not enough for this one

SPOILERS:

For me the main protagonist is one of the users of these sorts of movies and also she is obsessed with the killer so much that she is ready to make a scene and ruin her career just for the look of the murderer she fantazies about. He is definitelly the killer. She imagines herself in the role of his victims. She is totally mental but on the other hand, she knows deep down, that what he does (and she enjoys), is just evil and it needs to be stopped. Thats why she leaves the USB with the video for the mother.

Enjoyable Canadian mystery/thriller.
deloudelouvain23 January 2024
Les Chambres Rouges (or Red Rooms for the English title) is a Canadian mystery/thriller by writer/director Pascal Plante. I really enjoyed this movie for its mysterious build-up of the story. It keeps you wondering what is really going on, and so interested for the entire movie. No violent scenes, just a psychological thriller well told and filmed. The acting was good. I preferred listening to Juliette Gariépy than Laurie Babin who has that awful French Canadian accent and language. For a French speaking Belgian listening to that Frenglish from Quebec can be cringeworthy. I get it that Quebecois is their language but I just can not get used to it. But apart of that the movie is certainly worth a watch if you like a slow building mystery.

A fascinating look at modern human and the concept of wickedness.
Olis122119 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Among all the 2023 releases that I've managed to watch, this movie has still been the most interesting to me. I'm happy to see its rating has increased, as it seems deserving. This film portrays dark truths without violent and scary scenes. The main character of this film is charismatic and mysterious enough. I've considered this woman as a symbolic portrayal of modern humanity, experiencing a great deal of weariness, rather than categorizing her as positive or negative. This can be understood from her descriptions of her favorite game and the amount of time she spends playing it.

Getting involved in case and her efforts to bring it to a successful conclusion for the benefit of the victim's family seems to be more than anything a way to alleviate boredom. The main character of this story also resembles cold-blooded creatures of the dark web world; with the difference that she can be even colder and her mental control allows her to invent more complex and interesting forms of entertainment for herself instead of engaging in violent content.

Some believed that this film was a mockery of certain inefficiencies of the criminal justice system, but I don't think so; this film speaks more to the unpreparedness of the criminal justice system to face the complexities of the new world.

Les chambres rouges

Les chambres rouges.

A model becomes obsessed with a high-profile murder trial.

Red rooms is a psychological horror and thriller that gets darker in twisted way, the story is interesting and I love courtdrama films but this one felt unique and different a little with an up-to-date case about the dark web, so it really was a very interesting experience.

This movie excelled to picture the dark story of Kelly-Anne especially the atmosphere, most of the scenes were at night and it really served the movie.

This one shouldn't fly under the radar, it's one of the year's best, unfortunately it was released late in the year and it just didn't get the amount of appreciation it deserves.

A voyage into the psyche of a serial killer's groupie
ifilgoodx23 August 2023
A brilliant direction overall from Pascal Plante. A chilling performance by lead actress Juliette Gariépy. Masterful use of long takes. Tasteful use of cool and warm colours and of lighting throughout the film. A dive into the dark and crude subject of serial killing and raping, yet in a skillful presentation that is not too over-the-top violent nor sadistic. A final result that did leave me hanging a bit after the first view, but that I am happy to discuss with friends. (Also I've being told that this film references old stories that I wasn't aware of and that I will want to delve into). All in all, what might the film's main flaw, in my opinion, is well compensated for by the outstanding work that's been put into this fine and polished piece of art.

The Mystery itself is not interesting. The rest of the movie is plain boring.
ksaisandeep14 March 2024
What was the point of watching this ? I keep asking myself after seeing it. Theres really no thrill, no horror, creepiness, no tension. Then what does this thing actually have ? Well It has a good ending. Thats all it has. Nothing else works here. The protagonist is typical Hollywood style main character that is always depressed or sociopathic like & acts like a super weirdo, even worse she does some illegal dark web nonsense, making her unrelatable to anyone that watches this movie. And not to mention, she also gets to spend some time with this new character who was almost like a good friend to her but our lead character is such a sociopath that nobody will find her likable the movie. Her friend leaves halfway through the movie because our main lead is a sociopath. And i personally liked her friend more than the main character. So that tells you all you need to know about this pointless movie. It just follows her boring life. Its annoying, i was just waiting for this movie to end ever since it crossed the first 20 mins.

Avoid this film if you dont want to waste your time watching absolutely NOTHING on screen. The movie is about this overly dark main character who gets obsessed with this murder case which is not even mysterious or creepy or thrilling.

And it has this typical Hollywood style of film making that makes it look very pretentious & looking like a Artsy film made by a teenager who thinks its cool but everybody thinks its super cringe.

Some people might find it average but for me its so pointless that its almost a 0/10. Avoid it no matter what.

Read the (red) room
kosmasp8 February 2024
No pun intended - and really not as easy to read ... in more than one sense. This is true for the main character, but also the message the movie is sending and telling us. The director had a video message for the festival I watched this - and he basically told us that it is a slow burn movie. What he didn't tell us: that it is a movie that will either be loved or hated (maybe hate is too much - but as tough to decode as our main character is, as tough it is to anticipate the reaction of any potential viewer).

What is it that makes serial killers so enticing for some people? I don't think you will find answers to that here. You will not find easy answers for anything here actually. You may find something you see in this movie ... and the performances. And that is how it is played too. We project our feelings, our emotions to the main character(s). And while the movie never shows explicit scenes (of violence), we do get audio snippets of it ... which is more than enough ... actually maybe too much for some ... because imagination is wilder than anything that can be shown ... just be sure you are not too sensitive when it comes to stuff like that.

Even if you are annoyed by the movie (and there is a good chance), you cannot fault the main actress who dishes out one of the best performances of the year - or last year, whatever you want to call it. Not an easy movie at all ... but quite the intriguing one to say the least.

Unique thriller with top-notch production value
kaideneve22 February 2024
Was pleasantly surprised after randomly catching this film on Crave. Sound design and cinematography are both superb; very moody atmosphere is developed, which does an excellent job at enhancing the aura the script evokes. From the startling glance by the accused to the gorgeous shots of the city, both elements were exceptional, great in the LUT department as well.

The acting is also commendable by all involved, particularly the main actress. I see some reviews saying she was one-dimensional or lacking in emotion, but I found that she really pulled off a mysterious and almost sociopathic vibe very well. Quick mention to wardrobe, which was also great here.

A few minor qualms with the script, I felt that there could have been a bit more depth in the development between the two main female characters, but then again I think that would have also been a tricky balancing act.

Overall, I can highly recommend this to anyone who has a penchant for thrillers with elements of horror, but this film shows that you can accomplish the horror part very well without being graphic or obscene.

wow
NateWatchesCoolMovies2 April 2024
Do you always find yourself searching for a horror/thriller that's actually legitimately horrifying/thrilling? I know the struggle, but here's one for you. Pascal Plante's Red Rooms (Les Chambres Rouges) is a smart, sleek, sickening and highly disquieting piece about the sordid obsession everyone seems to have with true crime these days and the voyeuristic slant the internet has unfortunately bestowed upon it. A Montreal courtroom is hearing the case of a man charged with the brutal torture and slaughter of three teenage girls, the filming of which has been sold and distributed on the dark web. Various individuals attend the hearing including a mousy groupie (Laurie Babin) who believes the guy is innocent and a mysterious model (Juliette Gariépy) whose intentions remain, for the moment, unclear. It's here I'll stop with explicit plot description because this is truly one diabolical narrative puzzle to put together, steeped in nerve wracking suspense, vivid performances, an operatic score and some themes that will shake you to your core. How far can one go into freelance investigative territory before it becomes less about justice and more about personal gratification and getting too deep down a rabbit hole of distressing psychological discovery? The answers found in this story will make even the most seasoned horror fan uneasy, opening a Pandora's box of difficult moral quandaries and tough-pill revelations. Watch with caution, it's not for the squeamish and it's one of the most genuinely disturbing films I've seen in awhile, but also one of the most well made, and philosophically provocative. Streaming in CraveTV in Canada which means it might be on HBO Max, the stateside equivalent. Phenomenal, albeit profoundly dark film.

The Ballad of the Noble Lady of...
lanabogdanova24 March 2024
"The web was woven curiously, The charm is broken utterly..."

This movie is a harmonious modern art but full of mystery of medieval romanticism. Why? - try to solve this riddle yourself. Rare pleasure these days.

Everything is built like a medieval ballad here, from the opening chords of the magnificent soundtrack to the final crescendo that lifts up the heroine.

I sincerely thank the creators of this film for their noble desire to create something completely different regardless of commerce and the demands of the so-called "mass" audience.

Something "that puzzled more than all the rest"...

Meaningless trash
rostsit30 December 2023
Don't believe the ridiculously high score this film currently has. It is nothing like this. It is wasted time. I gave it 2 only for realistically enough shown TOR and everything related to it.

This film has no meaning, no purpose, no nothing. For almost 2 hours we are watching actions of the main character that have no reason. Till the end you can hope the reason will be revealed- but no, it is left as is, thus your time is wasted.

The only good thing was the music, but as it is disconnected from the film, you'd better listen to the music you like on youtube.

At least the secondary character - the fanatic of the murderer - had some development through the plot.

Don't waste your time
tl87516 February 2024
Started to watch the movie not expecting anything as the synopsis is very vague and left with nothing, only with 2 hours of wasted time.

It's a movie about a woman who downloads an mp4 video from the dark web. Nothing else. I've seen video projects made my students who don't even study cinematography.

I read the reviews about this movie and I get it. I really do. You can make stuff up about anything, like let's say about a guy who drinks water and nothing else, for about 2 hours. You could say that the movie is about how water is essential to life, how it is refreshing, so on and so forth. But you'll be spending 2 precious hours of your life watching a guy drinking water. So with this movie about the main character downloading a file from the dark web.

Don't waste your time, please.

so much potential, boring outcome
mokus-1051021 April 2024
First half of the movie is just irritating because of Clementine, and then it gets boring because of Kelly-Anne. Nothing really happens what justifies the age restriction also.16 should be more than ok. Every time when something violent happens, camera doesn't show nothing, we only see Kelly-Anne or Clementine's faces in big total as witnessing it (videos), its probably mesmerizing for the director, but nothing special at all for the rest of us.

If you take away all the thriller components from a thriller, you should at least give something in return.

We all kinda saw this movie already, only a little bit of a different ways.
