Credit Card
hkelleher-118 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Granted there are many reasons to question the cause of death as a suicide. One of the the primary reasons that triggered Tiffany to abruptly leave her house was an individual in a vehicle in the driveway aggressively accusing Tiffany of using a credit card. Her Mother questioned her, she admitted she did use the credit card. The Mother says, I didn't raise you like that; now I'm gonna have to tell your Dad. Tiffany immediately takes off on foot and two hours later is struck by a train four miles away. The episode never mentions the credit card incident again. The entire mystery revolves around Tiffany's abrupt departure and subsequent death without expounding upon the reason why she took off.

A good mystery with questions unasked
ranchofiesta20 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Too many questions that weren't even asked.

Why was she cremated only 2 days after the autopsy? Who made that decision?

What was the deal with the credit card? Who is "the friend" whose credit card she stole? The ex-girlfriend?

Was there followup with the "hearsay" witness?? Why did the attorney say the witness "was under oath" during police questioning? Is that even a thing?, to be under oath when giving a statement to police?

Can the family file suit against the Transit police for leaving body parts behind at the scene?? My God, that's horrific, as well as against procedure on so many levels! Obviously jurisdictions need to change when there's a death because the investigation skills of the Transit police are severely lacking.

If I only have the evidence shown, I lean towards "murder", or "foul-play" at least. Not suicide.

A tragic event.
Sleepin_Dragon24 October 2022
Believed to have committed suicide, and subsequently cremated, the death of Tiffany Valiante remains a mystery.

I can see from the reviews that this is quite a divisive episode, and I get the arguments from both angles. I'll try to give my honest review, based on what I've watched, rather than my views on the case itself.

Sometimes I'll watch a show like this and have a strong opinion, here though, I almost felt as though I were intruding on a family's grief, Tiffany's poor mother seems like a really tormented soul, she's clearly looking for answers that sadly it doesn't seem likely that she'll find, her daughter was a beautiful girl, very talented, you just don't know what someone is feeling and thinking on the inside.

I don't think you could say that this is a patch on the show's first series, the production is a little flatter, a little more formulaic. The story is a sad one, there are some powerful interviews, am just not sure the case is an unsolved mystery.

Very sad, 6/10.

Finally back after 2 years the reboot series delivers more creepiness than the first 2 seasons but still pales in comparison to original classic.
tresm8718 October 2022
Crazy to think it's been nearly 2 years since the first 2 seasons. I've checked every few months to see when this would finally be back and it's here. While the series has a bit of a different layout and lacks the same eeriness of the original, it's still a well done revisiting. Seems like they went back to more paranormal and unexplained aspects than murder mysteries which is nice. Hopefully the series keeps going and we get the next seasons sooner than 2 years. Instead of full episodes focusing on one topic though a word think that they could cut some of that down to have more of the classic template of multiple stories in each episode. Either way I'm just glad to have the show back and it's still solid regardless.

The evidence not mentioned leans toward suicide.
frankmannarino29 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I feel badly for her family. Her parents are broken people.

The problem with the series is facts are withheld to balance the mystery. Tiffany's life was not all that. She stole money from her parents and apparently her friends. Her mom bruised her in a fistfight. Child protective services were called to the house several times.

Law enforcement used bloodhounds to follow her route that night. Demonstrating she walked the distance to the train tracks. Her shoes and headband were left along her route. Not found some miles in another direction. So she walked barefoot? Perhaps she had tough feet.

She was known to be impulsive and short tempered. Suicide is often an impulsive act.

A compelling episode, but not very mysterious when you do some research.

interesting, but with gaps
Ar_Pharazon_the_golden26 October 2022
I would not be as dismissive as some other reviewers (one says 'duh, the shoes were carried off by dogs', as if the dogs would carry the shoes 2 miles and leave them together at the same spot without having torn them apart), although there are obviously some aspects the episode mysteriously (no pun intended) ignores, such as the whole credit card incident with which it begins only to ignore completely later. It seems important. I think there is good reason for the family to be skeptical even though it is not, in truth, the most compelling mystery to carry a full episode and it does lean heavily on emotion.

Great episode
papaaj-1321626 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It feels like the people giving this episode poor ratings never even finished it. I saw a review claiming that she had probably had alcohol at the party she was at prior to her disappearance, even thought it clearly states in the episode that the toxicology report came back showing that she had absolutely no alcohol or drugs in her system. There are three things that clearly point to this being a homicide. First that her shoes and head band where found 1.75 miles away from where she was eventually hit by the train. Even if she walked all that way with no shoes once she had gotten to the train track she would've had to walk a long ways on very sharp and jagged rocks which her feet showed no sign of. The second thing is that her shorts were never found and when she was hit by the train she was only wearing a sports bra and underwear, this could point to someone that had abducted her and took her clothes. The last and most obvious thing is that the train tracks were stained with blood where she was hit. Not a splatter but a stain which clearly points to her being laid on the on the tracks when she was already bleeding, she could've even been dead before impact.

Is this a mystery?
renatoarcos20 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There are many aspects that support suicide is the main drive of this death. Few things make you hesitate is the blooding on the rail road and the fact her short wasn't found...

I do find that suspicious but come on, I just can't believe they couldn't find another mystery with solid potential scenarios.

They could've digged further in the guys from the store or something like that. It felt so plain the story. I felt, at some point, it was more a denial of a suicide rather than an actual crime case elaboration.

This show still has a long way to be compared with its predecesor.

There are many episodes that are just "fillers".

Murder or Suicide?
Pequod8814 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A sad and compelling episode. Is suicide possible? Yes, although I find deadly assault more likely.

Tiffany was upset at having her friend arrive shouting about the credit card use. Did this person text others regarding her anger at Tiffany? Was this person the ex-girlfriend? How fraught was the recent breakup? What was purchased with the CC? While breakups can be magnified at 18, suicide is very rare. No alcohol or drugs were in her system. Were her parents supportive of her sexuality?

Even if Tiffany was so upset as to consider taking her life, why remove her shoes when walking on sharp rocks would be slow and painful? The foot photographed showed no cuts. The place where she was hit was about 4 miles from her home. The wooded area could have easily been used by drug abusers, hard drinkers, and others. She could have run into bad types or those her age angry about her sexuality (hate crime) or friends of her ex (who was not interviewed). From what we see in the show (always edited to avoid defamation), she could have easily been abducted, assaulted, killed (by accident?) and placed on the train tracks to avoid detection of foul play. She would have picked up her phone if she had dropped it. Was she forced into a vehicle? The removal of the shoes and especially the missing shorts strongly suggest assault. Why take off the shorts if planning to step onto the tracks? Why weren't the shorts ever found? I believe she was placed on the tracks dead or unconscious. Rumors of dirty deeds were soon flying in some circles. Rather than shock at a possible suicide, there was some gossip about abduction and assault. She was preparing to embark on college life and a volleyball scholarship. She had a ton to look forward to. Taken all together, what we learned make me lean heavily toward foul play.

Condolences to her family.

Sort of Compelling
mrrobot78718 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
When I started this episode, I honestly thought that it was pretty clear what happened. A family that didn't really understand their daughter missed the signs leading up to her tragic suicide. That said, there are a few items related to this case that don't quite fit. I'm not sure if it's enough to say for sure that this wasn't a suicide, but it is possible that she was murdered. The only annoying thing about this episode is: why did they make this one and not one of the many other compelling cases out there? This also would've been great if it was like the old episodes, packaged with other stories with less substance.

NOT an unsolved mystery!
dottiegolightly20 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So disappointed. There are so many truly bizarre, weird and baffling unsolved mysteries...and this truly doesn't even come close to one.

The family is convinced this was not a suicide, yet had her cremated right after the incident...no official autopsy was performed. Even if a family member of mine for sure committed suicide, I'd insist upon having an autopsy done. The main reason you cremate someone so soon after death is to hide something. The family blames agencies "for not doing their job" and "not following protocol" as there could've been dna or other evidence...but did not give them a chance to do any sort of tests. I know someone hit by a train doesn't leave a perfect body to autopsy, but there are still things to get can be found out. Such as true time of death.

They mention a credit card dispute with a friend which is never addressed again by the family nor officials (as a possible reason for murder). They don't mention CPS being called many times and they discount suicide because of one social media post saying she's content but shouldn't be. Sounds like someone who's content with suicide and they know they shouldn't be. The family is in denial and it's definitely sad for them, but they ruined the answers they're seeking. Waste of an episode.

GO ON THOSE HS KIDS SOCIAL MEDIA ACCTS!
One-Movie-a-Wk-Guy28 May 2023
First off, my condolences to the family for their loss. Of course they are going to say their child wasn't suicidal and I thought this episode was going to be a weak attempt by UM to convince us that she wasn't because II didn't see much contradiction in the Transit Authority's accounts, all I saw was another Attorney trying to capitalize on some family's grief. But then the HS kids talking about what they heard convinced me that someone talked and someone knows something, If the family is reading this, get out your daughter's HS yearbook and start going through every kid in that school's social media accounts - all of them - because these kids today put everything on there.

Not sure why so many people think this is not an unsolved mystery...
daughterofolaf1 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I am kind of surprised at how many reviews here are taking the stance that this was clearly a case of suicide and should not have been part of the series. I completely disagree! COULD it have been a suicide? Yes, absolutely. But is there enough evidence to cast doubt on it being a suicide? Unless a significant number of details/pieces of evidence are complete fabrications, then yes.

Like another reviewer stated, I am not going to opine on the case itself but rather on the episode, which is the point. I liked this episode because to me the events do all seem quite bizarre. But the episode is also highly frustrating because there are huge pieces of the story that are presented to the viewer and then simply dropped, not explored, not mentioned again, or not explained and I do not know why.

The incident with the girl's friend and the credit card fraud seems significant (at least we are to assume it is or else it would not have been mentioned), yet it is brought up once and then dropped. The fact that at least one of her friends stated that she was not happy and was depressed, etc., is shown but then nothing more is said about it (granted the girl seemed like a dolt and every other word she said was "like," so not very articulate and maybe there was simply nothing more to it than that). The fact that the train engineers gave conflicting, changing stories and one of them seemed to have flat out lied at one point (first said he saw it happen, then said he was not even looking at the tracks and saw nothing) is weird and never explored.

The most incredibly bizarre part of this episode, and the one which is easily the most frustrating because it is not explained, is the guy who said he heard three young men talking in great detail about the abduction, torture and murder of this girl--he even provided details to the police based on what he heard them say. Yet when those three young men were questioned by police they claimed to have no clue what the other guy was talking about and that they never had any discussion about the girl whatsoever and knew nothing about any of it aside from hearing she had killed herself. And that is the end of it. How on earth is this even possible? Was the other guy completely making the story up? Or were the three men lying? Why is something so huge not explained or discussed more?

The other aspect of this episode that made me uncomfortable was how exploitative it felt in terms of the family's grief--particularly the mother. She seems a bit mental, for lack of a better term, because of this event. Watching her at her creepy shrine to her daughter, writing messages or wishes or whatever they were and putting them in a box in the shrine, kissing the photos, it was all just too much. It creeped me out because I felt the behavior was really bizarre no matter how tragic the event was, and then I immediately felt bad for judging this woman who has been through something so horrendous. The bottom line is we probably should not be watching that sort of activity. This is all probably on me, but I feel the need to include that part because it really was weird.

As with other episodes, this one could have been told in half the time it took. But overall I believe there IS enough of a mystery here that the story does have a place in the show.

Lawyer seems to be perpetuating a faux mystery
davem-1041820 October 2022
The student conductor testified that she was on the tracks, but the family and attorney all seem to doubt his statement. He was watching the track, running the train.

Combine all this with: The credit card fraud she confessed to Very recent relationship breakup Her friend's interview with people police that she was, in fact, saddened recently She was out the door just seconds (minute) before her parents but was not responding to their calling out for her It's sad and my heart goes out to her folks, but nothing seemed either unsolved or mysterious on this one.

Hopefully Unsolved Mysteries does get back to true mysteries, and includes shorter versions of additional mysteries in the same episode, which worked so well with the original series.

Pnkprinses30928 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It's clear she was killed if you actually watch this. It bothers me that the girl was cremated and the railroad cops mishandled EVERYTHING because the family will never ever get answers.

A person never commits suicide in the nude, and like they said her feet had no marks from glass or wood. They should have looked into the credit card fraud and any enemies she may have had.

The only thing they can do is check the dna on the clothing, but the clothing probably has been compromised. They could probably check the phone too.

Another problem i have: the train kid said she "dove" in front of the train. Interesting words. People JUMP in front of trains. They don't dive. Diving means going head first with their arms out. That supports the theory she was already laying there, bleeding out.

Questions unanswered
bakersandra-475333 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I am glad to see this show revived, I hope it continues.

So, my question is why they are not looking into the credit card situation. Why did the parents who have so many unanswered questions have her cremated so soon after her death?

No autopsy or toxic was done. The train conductor changed his story 3 times. She was found with no shoes (later found) But the shorts she was wearing were not. There were a lot of people at that party and not one of them saw her at all.

I am not saying she did or didn't commit suicide I just think there are a lot of questions about this case that need to be answered.

Well produced, quite a slick episode but doesn't seem like a mystery at all to me
chrisgarry-2388224 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Sad to say this does seem like a genuine suicide.

Nothing really stands out about this case that persuades the viewer that this was a murder.

Granted the family come up with multiple possibilities but this is understandable as they have lost a member of the family.

It could be explained as group think to an extent, with no member of the family wanting to cause conflict with the others by rationalizing and voicing any kind of opinion that the girl took her own life.

The shoes being taken off is relatively easy to explain. People in a poor state of mind do things like that.

When using logic, all evidence points to a spur of the moment suicide.

May she Rest In Peace.

The train and murder
AvionPrince1626 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So yeah we follow that case of that young woman who get hit by a train: the big concern is that a suicide, an accident or a murder? I found it pretty interesting and we have a lot of mysteries and at the end of the case we can see that how the police work and stuff was pretty superficial and they didnt really do the job seriously: quick conclusions, case conclude too quickly. Im sad of how that was not take it seriously and We still dont know if it was a murder or a suicide. Its pretty implicit and let us think pretty openly and let us that the case was deeper and needed more attention and care about the police but now we have only theories, conclusions and a case not resolved. Sad. Pretty heartbreaking for the family.

This is not a mystery
joostvdloon18 October 2022
It was obviously a suicide. There is no reason to believe it was not. There are no interesting theories or alternative scenario's presented. I expect a show about unsolved mysteries to present intriguing mysteries that can be theorized about but this is nothing like that at all. There is no mystery here and it is not unsolved. Not knowing that someone is depressed and not being able to find a motive for commiting suicide does not mean it was not suicide. These are things that people usually keep to themselves and it is not uncommon at all. Also, the credit card thing was introduced but was not talked about again, which is very strange because that was very shady and could signal that she was not doing particularly well. Overall disappointing episode.

Not so much of a mystery
jrbond-576243 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is a sad story of a family in denial. A young girl who'd recently broken up with a girlfriend and been accused of credit card fraud, which she admitted to, just before she stormed off. 2 hours later, she's hit by a train. There's no doubt that there are some strange things associated with this story, like her taking off her shoes, headband and other items of clothing, but people do some weird things when they are about to commit suicide. A friend's son took his own life, and he left his phone and jacket on the bus, he didn't want his mum to know where he was or be contactable. This isn't really a mystery, but a very sad story and my heart goes out to the family who lost a lovely daughter, but they need to accept the reality and stop focusing on fantasy.

Why is this even an episode.
keepitgoingtolife20 October 2022
There is no mystery here. That girl killed herself. No reason to believe otherwise besides sad parents. It looked to me like she was an over achiever and her parents reacted strongly to disappointments. She appeared to be running scared from mom and dad who looked to be coming out hot. She snapped. Tossed her phone at the end of the driveway and wondered.. Nothing strange her. Nothing Mysterious here. Get over it.

The episode leaves out a big history with that family too. The chick had a mental break after the confrontation and being seen as a disappointment. Nothing odd here. Waste of time watching.

Have to give this a very low review simply because Netflix continue not to discuss these cases properly
nathanhogan-586511 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The classic Unsolved Mysteries were good because they often provided a balanced or alternating viewpoint that encouraged discussion on the case.

The new Netflix Unsolved Mysteries continues to take a single narrow-minded view to most cases with few or no alternate viewpoints explored. This case is no different and a brief Google of the case after reveals a wealth of important information they clearly chose not to discuss in regards to this case due to it torpedoing the narrative they were pushing.

Give this one a look but then go do your own research, or better yet don't watch it at all.

A tragic story, but no mystery here to be found.

This is supposed to be a clear case of suicide
tariqma200223 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is a clear case of suicide (I think) and I have experience in the field of forensic medicine, and I can confirm from experience that the facts mentioned refer to a case of suicide. You have the testimonies of witnesses from her colleagues that she was depressed and you have the testimony of the train engineer that she threw herself in front of the train and there was no other person at the scene of the accident. Then there is the fact that she stole the credit card of her close friend, and her friend protested against that, and the deceased father reprimanded her daughter for the theft. We calculated the time period between her leaving the house and her death, we find it suitable for her to reach on foot to the place where she collided with the train.. Regarding the team of experts hired by the family from a former forensic doctor, a lawyer and a private detective, they all work for a fee to prove the deceased's family's allegations, and most of their talk is emotional and speculative and not based . On the facts finally .. It is difficult for a family in any society to easily accept the idea of a suicide of one of its members and that is out of passion only .. but technically despite my initial conviction in the form of suicide However, it was possible to describe the method of death as being undetermined, because the suicidal intent and wandering is something inside the conscience of the person committing suicide, and it can only be certain in certain cases, not including that case.

Unsolved Mysteries is Becoming an Idol with Feet of Clay
hilaryjrp23 October 2022
Other subject-matter choices in the revived Unsolved Mysteries from seasons past have made me ask if Cosgrove Productions is the twenty-first century equivalent of a vanity press. The first episode of this season felt like an infomercial.

The word "mystery" implies that the audience will be mystified in some manner by the story. The Ray Rivera episode, which launched the series' Netflix reboot, mystified most viewers with the logistics of Rivera's trajectory.

From the opening minutes of the third season premiere, there was a feeling of being fed an advertisement by people with sufficient money to finance a production. You don't mention something as significant as the deceased being accused of theft--and then drop it forever. Additionally, the incredibly gruesome manner of death is physically disturbing.

Once again overlooking the obvious
rmmil24 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
What is up with this reboot of Unsolved Mysteries?

Just like the previous seasons, instead of 2-4 cases per episode like the original, we get one LONG case stretched out way too much for not much of a story. This format is to the show's detriment, as this case of obvious suicide and parents who can't come to terms with that would have felt a lot less pointless if it had been only one of the cases presented here.

Unfortunately that didn't happen, instead we get way too much information about how sad everyone is. It's tragic, we get that. But how is your sadness going to help us solve your case? What sense does that make? Why do they keep spending 1/2 these cases on the victim impact? This isn't a trial.

A huge piece was glossed over and ignored shortly thereafter: she had committed credit card fraud. That's a big deal. She got scared that her parents snapped at her and made a poor choice of judgement. That's all that happened. The shoes found at a distance? Have you ever heard of dogs or wild animals? Dog probably found the shoes, carried them off for a bit. Doesn't mean she was murdered.

What I think this case is actually about: well-off family financially can't accept daughter's suicide, hire high priced detective, it is in the detective's best interest to keep the case going. No mystery here.

Please stop the one case per episode. It's boring.
