A powerful evocative debut
sewafolie3 April 2024
In this deeply emotive piece, we get to learn about the lives of seven Black women living in the diaspora.

The documentary challenges us to see beyond the cover to learn about what makes these artists the empowered women they are today.

From the UK, to Jamaica, and Kenya, we're taken on an enthralling journey. Written in several languages, it's a joyous and worthy watch!

You'll laugh, you'll cry and you'll empathise with their various pursuits. A brilliant collaborative effort from all involved!

I thoroughly enjoyed watching Nwanyibuife during its opening week at Everyman Cinema and I look forward to what Chinwe produces next!

Beautiful

Warning: Spoilers
In one hour, Chin We was able to depict the lives and experiences of seven Black women who filmed themselves in the UK, Nairobi in Kenya, and Jamaica by the beach. My favourite moments included Elsie's scenes discussing motherhood and community, Theodorah's sections of the film on LGBTQIA+ support from African parents, Wamaitha's filmed scenes in the Nairobi farms in conversation beside her late grandmother, and mum, and Ibidola beautifully filmed her scenes with religious undertones. An all-round enriching experience with members of the cast spanning different parts of the Afro-Caribbean culture.

Beautifully Eye-Opening

Nwanyibuife is a fantastic film celebrating a variety of African and Caribbean perspectives. The stories themselves brought tears to my eyes and made me think about something I had never thought about before. From the use of language, poetry, and food, Nwanyibuife is a brilliant exploration of real people.

Alongside these incredible stories, the film directed by Chin We, is also beautifully shot. It helps tie together these perspectives through its gorgeous cinematography.

Ultimately, Nwanyibuife is worth a watch and I can't wait to see what Chin We does next, I'm expecting Incredible things!

Fantastic film

Really enjoyed this one and was amazed by the cinematography, the artistic flair and the topic was one of a kind. Really needed to be explored, you won't take your eyes off the screen! I actually learned a lot about the African and Caribbean diaspora that I didn't know and it really makes you think. This is original. The director did a fantastic job and we need to stand and applaud more female directors for being brave enough to tackle the tough subjects. Should have won the nomination based on the beautiful artistic direction, the uniqueness of all the languages we learned about and the tough, real messages that we all need to know.

I thoroughly enjoyed the documentary /film Nwanyibuife by Chinwe . It was truly captivating from start to finish . The women told their stories with such deep emotion and passion ,and that even in complexity, there's beauty to be found, to make life worth living . Chinwe did an amazing job with this film and I am just amazed about how far she's come , I could also see Chinwe brought in a lot of her creative skills into the film as an amazing photographer and brilliant artist already .Each scene and character were unique to make this film what it is . I am looking forward to more films by Chinwe in the future.

I thoroughly enjoyed this masterpiece by Chinwe. The duration was excellent. The cast; all beautiful and brilliant! It was insightful, educative and interesting from the onset, capturing the beautiful essence of womanhood as well as the brilliance of diversity. Each narrative told a story of perseverance, determination and individuality! It didn't feel overly scripted; was fantastically produced and the video quality was hugely impressive! The hardwork and effort that went into it was evident in every scene!

Well done Chinwe! I cannot wait to watch your next one! Hope it comes out very soon!!

Beautiful insightful film

A beautiful insightful film that built up momentum over time and left me feeling uplifted and peaceful by the end. Chin We has demonstrated her skills as a very talented filmmaker by weaving together so many complex women's stories. She has tackled some very relevant and harrowing issues with maturity and sensitivity and her usage of cinematography to exemplify each persons story was both subtle and poetic. The film feels like a cross section of documentary and art and I liked the way that the woman in each story was able to take control of their own narrative and lead the viewer where they wanted to.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and appreciated the raw depiction of the lived experiences of Black women in the diaspora. Chin We did a fantastic job to showcase the lives and experiences of seven Black women who filmed themselves across various continents. From the first frame to the closing credits, every shot is meticulously composed, each frame work of art in its own right. A must watch as in my opinion, Chin We have outdone herself, creating a visual feast that will linger in the minds of audiences. Nwanyibuife is a triumph of visual storytelling, elevating an already compelling narrative to new heights.
