could have been good...but wasn't.

Warning: Spoilers
I love horror films, im OK with lots of shaky cam and im a big fan of home invasion films. which made hate crime a definite must see for me.

within 20 minutes I realised it was going to be hard work watching this all the way through, not because it was disturbing or difficult to watch on moral grounds, no... because it was boring as hell and had a lot going on that was just stupid.

its a nice Jewish families dinner, I think for the kids birthday. luckily for the viewer dad is videoing everything. there's a knock at the door and 3 masked guys with swastika tattoos burst in and shout lots of nasty stuff.

they then proceed to shoot the kid (which was a surprise) then rape the mum (remembering to put her knickers back on afterwards)then shout a lot and tie everyone else up with the most pathetically easy to get out of knot in movie history.

this was the first 20 minutes, the next hour was just more shouting, with a brief bit of nastiness near the end (they poke out one of the kids eyes with a spoon then set him on fire and stuff him in the oven) but the nastiness doesn't distract you from the knowledge that what your watching just isn't very good.

I wasn't shocked when it finished, I was just numb from the repetitiveness of it all. and pleased I didn't have to ever watch it again.

Hate crime? No, Boring* Crime
itrevorallen16 November 2021
Poorly simulated choke / hitting / r*pe scenes. Super fake violence in general. Almost no actual blood or torture throughout the entire movie, if you pay attention it's nothing more than * we walked in on this scene with a bit of blood *.

If your going to attempt making a shock torture porn movie at least do it right. The plot and reasoning behind the film was so believable it truly was a wasted film / plot.

This is just soft core Atroz.

Also, what a lame attempt to end the movie on some wholistic "80,000 hAtE cRiMeS" like this had anything to do with your movie.

It was ok

I found it on the 'banned movies in the UK' list that I'm trying to get through lately, as I'm consistently not shocked or excited by new movies of this genre.

It's filmed in a 'home movie' way; shaky cameras, cameras out of shot and not a great quality. But once I got used to this I found that it added to the tension.

There are some uneasy scenes. The family are made to do things unimaginable. But overall I wasn't hooked the whole time. It isn't very gory or violent, it's more of a mind thing as you're imagining what they're doing (because you can't clearly see where the cameras are placed).

It is watchable but to me not really shocking enough to be on the banned list.

A pointless and ultimately pretentious film
Spankalicious17 February 2014
This film is about 3 neo-Nazis attacking a Jewish("Is it Hannukah? Is it Passover?" the Father awkwardly and unconvincingly asks at the beginning of the film to his child just so we all know they are indeed Jewish) family on the youngest son's birthday.

What follows is 70 minutes of found-footage(yeah, it's one of THOSE films) garbage as the Nazis terrorise the family and film it all. THat's pretty much it. There is no suspense at all, there is no script, and it is clearly pretty much all improvised, and I think it's fair to say that none of the actors in this film have ever been to an improv class in their lives, as there is at least two Jewish slurs and three F words every 60 seconds, and outside of that, are completely incapable of constructing a sentence. The acting from the three antagonists isn't dreadful, Ian Roberts as "Three" is decent, a former rugby player, Dancing With The Stars contestant, gay rights activist and all-round nice guy in real life. His decision to be in this abomination of cinema was bizarre, but he tries his best. One of them tries way too hard to be like Matthew Lillard in Scream, and the other guy isn't bad either, but the director made him a completely ridiculous character(more ridiculous than Stu Macher 2.0 and Crystal Meth Addicted Rapist). Seriously, no one could make that bizarre and sleep-inducing bathroom scene any good. Also, whose idea was it to have "Three" wear a mask over his ski-mask at the beginning of the film, to the point where everything he says is muffled? Ridiculous. As for the rest of the cast, they are pretty dreadful. The Dad is the absolute worst, and is almost more dislikeable than the Nazis with his absolutely unreal emotions and actions during the ordeal.

At the end, we are randomly told how there are 80,000 hate crimes every year in the US. AND? Do you think this has changed anyone's views on anything? Do you think if you showed this to a group of 1000 fascists, that even one would change their opinions? The answer is no. People that are calling this "Powerful" are either plants or idiots. This is a weak and pretentious film, and Bressack has proved himself as a lazy and undeserving film-maker. The only reason I give it a Two is because giving a 1 to a film with Ian Roberts as a neo-nazi just isn't right.

Not what it's hyped up to be...........
GarrettWallace5 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I first heard about this film in late summer/early autumn of last year. The director, Mr. Bressack, recently made this title available on VOD on his website. Having read many of the critical reviews which praised the film's realistic depiction, I wanted to check it out. I have to say that I was disappointed and hopefully these "critics" are not on a payroll somewhere.

The film is shot found footage style and has all the vertigo and nausea inducing shaking that accompanies that. Really, the shaking made me more sick to my stomach than the plot that was unfolding before my eyes. If you are a fan of the found footage genre, however, this may not cause you consternation.

The acting in this film is overboard. Some of the dialogue is cheesy to say the least. I'd say a good half of it is just expletives that seem to act as filler material. I'm not a fan of rape scenes, as I'm sure any person with a semi-normal psychological makeup isn't, but the ones in this film weren't so disturbing because the actress is clearly clothed during them. I understand why this is necessary from a filmmakers perspective but here it was quite obvious. Another rape scene in a bathroom contained dialogue and actions by one of the perpetrators that was simply baffling and the camera angle in that scene rendered it fairly ineffective.

The film is so overdone that it lost its "shock effect" on me about halfway through. Perhaps I'm a little more desensitized to violence due to having witnessed so much of it in my own life. I did not find this film to be as traumatic as some critics pointed out. The ultimate fate of the oldest boy was, quite frankly, insulting to the viewers intelligence. A couple of other things that were done to him weren't realistic either.

Mr. Bressack might have been better served to hire stunt professionals for these roles. I realize that he didn't want to hurt his actors but that caution hurt his film. The way this family was tied up was laughable and took away a lot of the terror aspect.

Some critics and reviewers have liken this film to a 70 minute version of the home invasion scene in "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer." I disagree. The scene in "Henry" is far more effective because it is relatively brief, has no exposition or back story, has the added benefits that shots before and after that scene were shot on film, while the scene itself was shot on video (making it appear all the more authentic), and implicates the viewer a voyeur along with Henry and Otis at the scene's conclusion. Hence, that scene is repulsive to most viewers and has the added dichotomy of coming 15 minutes after another murder scene where the viewers might not be so repulsed by the violence inflicted upon the sleazy, fat, obnoxious fence selling stolen goods.

I give Mr. Bresseck a little leeway since he is such a young filmmaker who in all likelihood has a promising career ahead of him. However, let us not forget that "Henry" was shot by a first-time director and I found that film to be far more effective at exposing viewers to violence as entertainment.

Mr. Bresseck included some footnotes at the end of his film that I felt were totally unnecessary. He could have simply allowed his film to speak for itself. It was a valiant effort on his behalf but I can only give 3/10. The director only spent about 3 minutes developing characters for this family and they weren't very likable ones at that. I just had a difficult time empathizing with them. Again, this probably has more to do with actual violence, both physical and sexual, that I've witnessed in my personal life and not simulated violence, which is quite evident in this picture.

Avoid at all costs! Bad from beginning to end!
latifah2817 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Badly filmed. Shaky camera work. Not always clear what's happening. All the actors are terrible. Clearly the director didn't have a clue. Worst film I have ever seen. Dialogue can barely be understood as they were all talking shouting at the same time. Reminded me of a crowded pub. It's messy and in no way seamless. I am furious that I spent good money to watch it. It goes in for the kill in 5 minutes. Not enough time to know the characters. So didn't know what was getting done to who. The 3 attackers, well there are no words to describe how bad they were. He was obviously trying to be as good as Funny Games. If I were him I would stop making films. I actually have no words for how terrible this film is. You get the gist of what's happening and often the mind is much more brutal than the film, what you don't see is more disturbing (not in this case). He has even managed to eradicate that feeling you get when sounds are worse than the deed. The screen was too busy all the way through, making harder to decipher what was going on apart from the obvious stuff. If you want a decent film(s), try Eden Lake and Funny Games. If I owned this film on DVD I would burn it. I can't stress enough not to waste your time with this film. Truly, truly rubbish. I would also run out of space. Whoever sanctioned the release of this movie needs to retire, along with anyone else that took part in any way with the production. It's beyond rubbish.

Extreme!
SpannersGerm6697 April 2015
When it comes to extreme films, there aren't many films out there that are more extreme than Hate Crime. This is filled with anti Semitic material from start to finish, as a Jewish family is brutalized by a rampaging trio of Neo Nazi home invaders.

We don't get much character insight at all before the carnage begins, which is the exact problem with the movie. Here we are supposed to sympathize for the characters, which the director succeeds in doing, but only because of the level of violence inflicted upon them, as opposed to generating some characters with any depth in them. Cardboard cutouts who have no name, no personality, just the capability of screaming to let the viewer know that they are in pain and remind everybody of how bad the situation is. Its like the horrible acts of violence that we hear on the news every night. We sympathize with the victims because of the situation, but we forget about it days later, because we didn't know them. That is the best way I can sum up Hate Crime. Yes, the victims are going through some very bad things, but we don't know these people. We don't know their interests. We don't know their names.

Hate Crime will appeal to those who like shocking acts of violence on screen for the sake of being rebellious, but if you want something with depth, then you are better off looking elsewhere!

WTF did I just watch?
lazygafiltafish10 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
You pretty much have a horror movie designed to look like a snuff film. This was like a really bad student film from a junior college. Looked up the director who is naturally the son of 2 people already in the entertainment industry (like how Jayden smith is an actor and how Lisa Rinna's daughters are both models!)

Let me give you an idea of some of the scenes.... 1. The youngest son is killed first. 2. One of the scumbags then rapes the mother and then has the other son have sex with her and then they kill the mother. 3. Another one of the scumbags plays mind games with the daughter that he isnt going to hurt her despite him making her remove most of her clothing (fortunately she stabs him) 4. One of them burns a swastika in the son's face and later removes his eye with them playing catch it it. They then stuff him in the oven killing him which didn't make sense since he was too large. 5. The dad is loose but gets killed (doesnt seem to have called the cops?) 6. Ends with a nice excerpt on hate crimes increasing

Only reason it is 2 stars is because it's short.

Hate Crime (2013)

** (out of 4)

Decent "found footage" film has a Jewish family celebrating a birthday when three Neo-Nazies break into their home.

That's pretty much the only "story" to this film as for 70-miutes we see the five family members being abused and tortured by the maniacs. I'm not going to sit here and call this a good movie but I do think director-writer James Cullen Bressack at least made a realistic one. I say that because this genre seems to have a new film hitting store shelves weekly and by now they're all starting to feel as if they're gimmicks. HATE CRIME at least looks like real footage and for the most part the actors do a nice job to where you can believe what you're watching.

I think the biggest problem with the film is that often times we've just got scenes that are dragging on without enough drama/tension. This is especially true as the movie goes on and even though it runs just 70-minutes, that seems way too long. As with a lot of films in the genre, this one also suffers from some logical stuff especially towards the end when a few plot twists are thrown in. This includes a member of the family breaking free yet the killers just seem to not pay it too much attention as they stand around screaming at one another. HATE CRIME certainly doesn't fall into the group of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT but it's not nearly as bad as some out there.

Everything that you want in true INDY & EXTREME film making

Hate Crimes (2012): Directed by James Cullen Bressack

From director James Cullen Bressack comes a film that is brutal, real, unsettling and captivating. Bressack who is considered one of horror's rising film directors on the independent circuit and the director of the psychological debut film My Pure Joy (2011) creates a nightmare of a masterpiece. Hate Crime takes you moments before a gang of three thugs break into a families' home, doing unspeakable things that torture, harm and violate this all-American family during a birthday party.

Known for honest and real films that contain subject matter that pushes the boundaries even in the horror genre, Bressack hits the mark here with the controversial Hate Crime. While the subject matter is taboo breaking and harsh from just about the entire reel, Bressack finds away to hide the truth from us and lets our minds fill the blanks with brutal assaults that smacks the senses and doesn't allow the eyes to stop watching Overall the acting is believable with frightening and great performances by all those involved especially Jody Barton (Number 1), Tim Moran (Number 2) and Number 3 portrayed by the menacing Ian Roberts.

It is understandable why film fests have issues and refuse to show the film, it would cause discomfort to the most harden horror fan. Hate Crime is honest, psychological and real with a brilliant job done by Bressack and cast overall. Powerful and unapologetic only scratch the surface of this independent horror nightmare that makes you feel that you are there with psychological torment, violence and hell that actually is worth watching as a fan real horror filming.

Too much..
that_movieguyxx14 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
First of all IMDb rejects reviews that don't follow community guidelines, so I'm gonna have to hold out on going into detail over the scenes. Secondly, I won't be talking about the acting, my thoughts are on the content alone. This review will be unpopular because everyone here seems to be pretty good at stomaching a lot. To be honest I believed I was too until I was this film. Shotty acting or no, this it the most remorseless depraved thing I have ever seen and believe me I'm huge into the lost footage genre. I sat through all three August Underground movies, Megan is Missing, Zero Day, the Poughkeepsie Tapes, etc. And while they all disturbed me, none hit this hard.

I can't say what happens because if I describe a single scene, this review will be flagged and deleted. But we're seeing these unspeakable things happen to a mother, a father, and three children. An innocent family celebrating a young boys birthday. And then let me be as vague as possible. Three men break in and proceed to "have date night" with the kids' mom and go on to force him (A TEN YEAR OLD) to "partake" as well.. On his birthday... Here's where I'm going to come off as soft. Who would ever think of something so horrid? Oh and fiction or not, DON"T INVOLVE CHILDREN. Those child actors were literally assaulted in this film which wasn't fake. They're gonna be traumatized for the rest of their lives like other child actors who grow up and share their regret about making films like this. When I say child actors in this film are assaulted, I mean there are violent sexually explicit scenes where a ten year old actor is at least present in the room. Don't involve kids, end of story.

One scene that really bothered me was where after the father having seen his whole family violated in every way imaginable (including seeing his youngest child being put where you put cookies or a turkey) he gains the advantage momentarily and has a knife to one of the neo-Nazis' throats and you can just see and hear in his voice how traumatized and broken he is. Crying that he'll let the guy go if they just let him "see his little girl again" while the sick f's just scream what they're gonna do to her. A few seconds later they kill the dad. And these guys take one more hit of meth and head away Scott free. No justice for this family, nothing. We see in a caption at the end that the two guys were found, because they dropped the camera and someone found and reported it. They went to jail with life sentences. How is that not death? Even more depressing for you is a sad reminder of the American judicial system. Things like this happen, and the most horrible people get away. The girl was the only survivor in the family. It's captioned at the end how she was found in one of their basements, further violated, and is "currently adjusting to life without her family". That's just upsetting, like why did the movie above all else, need to add that?

At the end of the day, this movie violated every moral in and outside of the realm of fiction. It was supposedly created as some sort of PSA showing the severity of hate crimes. That's what they say, but I say this director is just a sick person with a sick mind. What we have here is something that was created to repulse and sadden the audience by showing them legitimately the worst thing that could ever happen to someone. I know it's just a movie and I know I sound like a.. "cat", but this was just too much. I don't know how there are people saying they enjoyed this. It was just torture p*rn. Anyone who enjoyed this needs therapy, because that's not something any rational person would want to see. As for those who stomached it.. Well you're stronger than I. Like I said I've made it through some bad ones, and I thought I could handle this stuff, but this one really got to me. Once I'm finished writing this I never wanna think about it again. This director has a history of breaking the moral fabric, and he seriously needs a legal ban from filmmaking. I could forgive a lot of this if it didn't involve three kids. This broke laws in real life, and as I'm sure you can tell by this long rant of a review, I'm angry and upset. I hope the director ends up in jail. This was everything that is horrible. And a ten year old was subjected to it. This was not okay dude. 0/10 Way too far..

I went into more detail here than I'd planned to. If this is flagged and removed I'll clean it up as much as I can.

DEFINITION of HORROR!
baykin11 September 2018
When i think of horror this is what I want. Thrillers and just the extreme violence men can do out of hatred. Just the fact that it's not sci-fi and no supernatural. The movie from Beginning to end is a thrill ride. Not for the weak hearted that's for sure! People that voted this movie bad just isn't a real horror fan.. I think if it was just filmed by a crew instead of "found footage" it might be better.. but really this is an extreme movie. Very gory and you literally can't wait for what possibly More can happen

Indie Horror that's worth checking it out
argento622 June 2016
Before I get into this one, I must admit, without any intention of comparing a film to another one that if there is something that gets me interested every damn time about film, are subjects such as the one in HATE CRIME. Racism, discrimination, human rights are all things exploited in movies such as the great SHINDLER'S LIST, A TIME TO KILL, and the extraordinary American HISTORY X. These films, for a reason or another all got me to my stomach and I haven't forgotten any of them since. And James Cullen Bressack's HATE CRIME qualifies as one of them. But, nope, scratch that part. Should it be different, HATE CRIME's far closer to a pure horror film than a Drama. Call me a pussy, call me too sensitive, at first I wasn't too sure if I should test myself with this film, but something inside me felt like I had to. So I took the red pill and watched it.

HATE CRIME is the story of a Jewish family. New to their neighborhood, they're about to celebrate their son's birthday. They want to immortalize the event on camera but soon after the party begins, a bunch of crazy, stoned neo Nazi lunatics storm in the house.

This is all I need to give away if you haven't seen the film yet and maybe intend to test yourself. The nightmare that follows starts within about the first 5 minutes of the film and it doesn't let go until the very end. Turning that film into a survival experience, in which a desperate family becomes hostage of a group of people that obviously hate them.

Most of the time, the visual style of HATE CRIME, which involves letting an actor run with the camera surprisingly serves the overall film pretty well with allowing the filmmaker to get as close as the action as he wants you to be and instead of making you feel for the sympathetic characters, just simply making you resent the fear, the anger, the cries and all the emotions storming inside the protagonists. HATE CRIME manages at times to challenge the viewer. I must admit that I've been tested on more than one occasion as this night which started as a quiet, birthday evening became such a fierce and crazy night of crimes beyond what I could have imagined. And that is why I won't spoil you in this review with much about the disaster that occurs but rest assure that pushing beyond the limits isn't something that this film shies away from, as I thought that only animal cruelty and abuse on child and women could happen to make me uncomfortable in horror films anymore.

There are very few weaknesses for this one that don't really bother the entire work. For instance, one of the masked assailants, the biggest one's voice will appear incredibly hard to hear clearly through his mask, making his dialogues hard to understand for the first minutes of the ordeal. But one can thank the need to take himself into such a horrific ride, or the will to see the protagonists' triumph, the film builds strength for itself that far exceed the little flaws. I felt like I must see this film and I did. This one is a rewarding piece of indie film overall. And I'm really looking forward into James Cullen Bressack's future in film as I'm looking to have the chance to see more of his past work. Including the intriguing: TO JENNIFER.

What a mess of a movie
jessicartim18 February 2020
What do you get when three LSD, alcohol filled crazy Neonatzis makes a home movie? You get "Hate Crime".

There are several big problems with this found footage, firstly, we get little to no introduction to the victim family, there is little to no establishing of the characters.

Movie starts at the dinner table and this perfect opportunity to tell us the viewers more about them is completely wasted, and we jump right in to the action with three home invaders.

Entire movie is told from incredibly shaky, painful to endure perspective and finally is way too long. I almost gave up halfway through due to horrendous camera work.

It could easily be a 30-min short and I think it would work much better this way.

Alto there are some really gruesome, messed up scenes in this movie so if you want to be shocked, you might want to try to watch this found footage.

Warning: Spoilers
My wife and I have been on a kick the last few months looking for the most uncomfortable films to watch. This movie showed up as recommended viewing from one platform or another and had a Red band trailer. Looked pretty good, so I read some reviews. I should have listened to them. What a waste of time! The camera work was so terrible it almost makes you dizzy, and the sound was pure garbage. I always have closed caption on and even that couldn't translate what the villains were trying to say, that says something! The scenes that were sopposed to be naughty were perfectly ruined with bad angles or just plain poor planning. The rape scenes were so timid as to be laughable. Thank goodness this movie was so short. I would like to point out that we are very tolerant of b movies and low budget, but what they created was weak, boring, and unacceptable.

...a film that depicts the hatred of one group of people towards another with a different set of beliefs!
extremehorrorcinema11 November 2013
A Jewish family, who have recently moved into the neighbourhood, celebrates the birthday of their youngest son. Camera at the ready the father films the proceedings. Little do they suspect what will become of the night…from a time of celebration to one of terror! Hate Crime is when a Neo-Nazi gang decides they don't want Jews in their town and go to scare them off with a home invasion and acts of terror. Drug fuelled they take a step too far at the beginning then roll with this into something much worse. Taking the camera off the father they film the proceedings James Cullen Bressack's second feature length film is a very different monster to his first, his very personal journey that is My Pure Joy! Naturally a film from the perspective of thugs shooting footage of their own crime belongs in the Found Footage genre. It is very well done as well; there is a true feeling of viewing something that is actually happening with no unnecessary shaky camera work. Firstly we get what we would expect from a father fooling around with his camera then later on with the Neo-Nazis filming their atrocities towards the family.

James Cullen Bressack seems to be able to get a lot out of his actors here in Hate Crime! All the players in this from both parties portray their roles well. There is suitable amount of both terror and anguish from the family at what is happening to them. Each one is believable in what they they are experiencing. Then we have the three Neo-Nazis. These guys were great, suitably menacing and crazy; a real feeling of a drug fuelled menace. Each uses a number to represent themselves. No. #1 and No. #3 are brothers and No. #2 is their friend and fellow Neo-Nazi gang member. These brothers are pretty crazy guys while their friend seems more in control. Especially with the eldest brother No. #3, his mannerisms and the way he moves are brilliant! Being a film about violence towards innocence there are effects, and thankfully Mr Bressack went with all practical visual effects. There are some great moments when these effects are used very well, but I won't discuss them here as I don't want to spoil the film! Something else stood out for me too, and perhaps it is strange for me to mention, but the gunshots sound real in this and not tinny or what have you as we sometimes get; for whatever reason this stuck with me.

My only real negative about Hate Crime is the scene with the mother being raped by No. #3 and the later rape. I felt more nudity would have made this more shocking for the viewer! Not necessarily full frontal and what have you though. I think this would have been more shocking in creating an even more feeling of helplessness for the character of the mother. Although maybe the actress wasn't willing to go so far, thus what we get is all that could be done. However, in stating this it is still a great scene with the terror portrayed by the mother done very well.

With what we get with Hate Crime, James Cullen Bressack succeeds with his goal of creating a film that depicts the hatred of one group of people towards another with a different set of beliefs! Of filming torments being thrusted upon a family who were expecting a night of celebration and fun.

A disturbingly violent tour de force of a found footage flick!
rotundbatman-113 April 2013
It's evident early on that Hate Crime isn't playing around when it comes to the violence. It's raw, sadistic, and just as the name implies, hateful. That's not to say it's full of gratuitous gore, or blood splatter, there's hardly a drop of the red stuff, save for a couple of scenes. The violence in this movie is actually realistic, and that's what makes it so disturbing. At times it was difficult to watch because the entire time I was thinking to myself "this could easily be actually happening right now". Take heed to all the warnings from reviews folks, I don't know if I've ever seen a meaner flick.

This is a found footage movie, and I know that's going to get groans and eye rolls from a lot of people, but it doesn't really feel like a found footage movie. It's incredibly realistic, it basically happens in real- time, and is beautifully edited. It feels more like you're there, enduring the hell with this family instead of simply watching. Of course all the editing in the world wouldn't help if the cast weren't believable, and thankfully, Bressack managed to find some incredibly talented actors and actresses to bring his story to life. I can't imagine it was an easy feat to get into the right mindset to act out some of the things in this movie, but almost everyone involved turns in a totally believable, flawless performance. Again, it's terrifying because this is exactly what a home invasion of this nature would look/sound like.

Hate Crime isn't a movie to be enjoyed with others, I feel like it would lose it's effectiveness in larger groups. It certainly isn't a "get drunk with all your buds, and watch a movie" kind of film. To truly experience this movie, and get the most out of it, I feel like solo is the best way to watch.

From the very beginning, Hate Crime grabbed me by the neck and repeatedly punched me in the gut, and then kicked me while I was down. I lost count at the amount of times all I could do was sit there and say "fuck". James Cullen Bressack and company deliver a movie experience that actually gets to you, elicits an emotional response, and that's incredibly rare for me. This is guerrilla film-making at it's finest.

This movie will absolutely not be for everyone. In fact I only personally know a handful of people who I think would be able to watch it through to the end. Only those with strong stomachs, and strongly desensitized to violence need apply. Hate Crime is a rare treat for those of us who seek out this type of experience with a film.

Ultra-Violent Depiction of Despicable Crimes Against Humanity
spamnjunk-671-69231228 April 2013
An innocent family is celebrating their smallest child's birthday as suddenly the door swings open and three masked neo-Nazis invade their home. They beat on the mother, kill the youngest son and drag the family to the cellar, where the family is faced with unspeakable terror. But as the maniacs start to lose hold of the situation, a fight for life and death ensues.

James Cullen Bressack's film certainly deserves to be labeled a "terror film". The terror starts directly after the credits, no introduction, no waste of time. The three aggressors enter the house and start raping, murdering and torturing the frightened family. Instead of letting the viewer get into the mood, the film immediately unleashes a violent chaos which should definitely be a bit too much to handle for a modern day mainstream horror audience.

One of the films many strengths is its structure. Due to its shortness and directness, there is no time for taking breath, the film puts constant stress on the viewer, a fact which is emphasized by the shaky camera and the constant screams of drug-induced violent frenzy and terror. I know this statement may seem somehow obsolete nowadays with all the CGI and big budget productions, but HATE CRIME is friggin authentic and realistic. In some ways it may remind the well-cultured gorehound of the August Underground films, although it would be wrong to directly compare the two works to each other, as HC relies has a well-developed plot and suspense and doesn't merely rely on showing an assortment of atrocities. Although some of the scenes are very nasty, maybe even bordering on obscenity. The psychological aspect is what really gets to you though, the whole film has a menacing aura of unease to it, even the scenes not depicting graphic imagery are disturbing due to the overall realism of the movie. These gentlemen surely know their craft! Hate Crime certainly isn't free of flaws but all in all the film works out great. Few films nowadays have the power to traumatize an audience as this unconventional bad boy does. HC comes highly recommended to all fans of transgressive sicko flicks, terror cinema and those who do not quench their eyes when confronted to the brutal truths of human society. But be warned: this movie is sick, highly disturbing and twisted. This is the kind of stuff that gets people seriously offended and may cause permanent damage to an unsuspecting viewer. It is also the kind of stuff any gorehound would like in his collection. Don't get me wrong though: under all the layers of filth and depravity one can see the moral statement the makers had in mind when shooting HC. This is quite an important film in its way, and it's a shame that nobody has yet had the guts to release it on DVD. Pity, I bet this flick would sell really well.

Hell is other people.

Warning: Spoilers
Hate Crime is a wonderfully nasty little gem of exploitation goodness, and a breath of fresh air for horror fans who have grown weary of all the PG-13, CGI ghost/devil spooky kid movies of the past decade. Pitch shifters, boo faces, and jump scares might startle in the moment, but Hate Crime's very real world horrors will linger long after the film ends. The brutality starts about 2 minutes in and doesn't really let up for the entirety of the picture.

Hate Crime is a "found footage" movie, and while some may argue that this premise has run it's course, it's the perfect format for a project like this. A nice Jewish family has just moved into a new neighborhood, and is recording their youngest son's birthday party when a not so nice trio of neo-Nazis invades the home to try and scare them into moving back out. An unplanned act of violence quickly escalates the situation into something that can't be undone, and all hell really starts to break loose.

What proceeds is 70 minutes of beatings, burnings, mutilations, rape, and murders... all in your face and up close thanks to the first person vantage point that the "found footage" format provides. It gives the horrors an intimacy that wouldn't be possible from a traditional narrative, and makes the viewer almost complaisant in the affairs. The victims are so completely dehumanized that by the end one becomes almost numb to their plight, until the credits roll and you're painfully reminded the extent of what's been lost. Powerful stuff.

But it's not just exploitation (and it would be fine if that's all it was), there's also a message here. Hate Crime exposes the damage that hate has on not only the victims, but the victimizers as well. It shows the futility of an ideological stance based on emotion rather than reason, and how the poisons of bigotry and xenophobia are far more harmful than the perceived threat of the targets. Nobody "wins" in this movie. There are no happy endings. Hatred destroys everything and everyone. But it's message isn't preachy, and never gets in the way of the action.

The only reason I don't rate this movie a 10 is because of the lack of total nudity. I just don't think that people who rape and kill you would let you leave your bra on. This is a minor quibble and doesn't detract from the film effectiveness, but it needs to be pointed out. At the end of the day, Hate Crime is exactly what I'm looking for in a horror movie, and rightly earns it's place among the greats of extreme cinema.

A solid and brutal home invasion effort
kannibalcorpsegrinder26 April 2020
Celebrating their sons' birthday, a Jewish family finds themselves under attack by a group of Neo-Nazi's who begin targeting and tormenting the family because of their background, and as the night wears on they begin increasing the torture in more brutal and sadistic ways than they imagined they would do.

On the whole, this was a spectacularly brutal and enjoyable effort. One of the finest aspects here is the immediacy and impact of the overall experience here. Without any kind of build-up at all, they invade and assert their authority in an absolutely fantastic fashion. Taking over the house, holding them down and tying them up before raping the mother in front of the whole family even before getting an idea of what's going on is a stellar way of going about introducing what the group is about and the intensity level they're going to exhibit throughout the rest of the film. What makes it so intense is that, as the night goes on, this one ups the intensity level as they force ever more extreme actions on the group. Not only do they take these kids through raping and forcing themselves onto the kids but the beatings, physical torture and psychological torment get brought to a head with the cutting out and blinding of the one family member which signals the real fun as they take revenge on the group. These scenes are fun, chilling and cathartic based on what happened to them beforehand, countering the sadism and brutality in overall fun fashion leading to a shocking finale. These here are the films' positives, although this one does have a few minor flaws. The main issue here is the seemingly bizarre notion of having the three be at odds with each other over what they want to do with the family. They tend to argue over what they want to do and seem to have no game-play other than being at the house because of their opposing religious views which seems to be quite unrealistic based on the overall intention behind their invasion. The arguments and frustration they share during so many of these scenes are unnatural and unrealistic for a group going through this kind of action together. The other issue with this one tends to be a carryover effect from that in how unrealistic the whole affair seems to be. Not only is there little info about how they knew of the family's background when it's obvious they just moved there from the moving boxes strewn all over the house but the whole thing seems sloppy anyway. Beyond them arguing with each other, letting the family members go around unattended with escape opportunities to notify the neighbors without any care about not letting them get away or alerting the neighbors with their antics. These issues do manage to hold it back somewhat slightly in the end.

Rated Unrated/R: Extreme Graphic Language, Graphic Violence, forced incestual rape scenes and drug use.

Just a bunch of F-bombs... and Nazi's
jeroentoonen10 December 2016
There are certain films that the hardcore horror crowd will never stop talking about. The Japanese had their Guinea Pig series. America shocked the scene with August Underground films and of course Lucifer Valentine made some awkwardly sick stuff. Serbia gave birth to a special kind of torture porn with Srpski Film and so the ball was in America's court again. This one does not entirely fit in the same category, but the impact feels similar. James Cullen Bressack presents to us: Hate Crime

I can't give anything away. On the other hand, I don't want to give anything away. It's really best to go in clean. In this new found footage film four sadistic home intruders hold a typical American family hostage.

It's so hard to describe the impact of the film without giving some examples. What I can say is that this is one of the first times that I actually thought that the found footage gimmick (because that's what it still is) works. Realism is of major importance in Hate Crime and the best way to make it all relatively believable is by keeping the viewer as close as possible to the situation. Close to the bad guys as well as the uncomfortable helplessness of the victims themselves. There's no remorse and there are no exceptions, everyone has to worry for their life at any given point. There's no way you can predict their next move and that's nerve wrecking.

It's one of the many things I liked about it. Not just the continuous storm of surprises, it's also the taboo-breaking nature of those surprises that makes it feel rather special. James' talent really shows this time as he planned and directed everything very precisely, giving the actors the time and space they need to give away a heck of a performance. One of the best I've seen in a while, certainly for an Indy flick. It's incredible. I do wonder how desperate they had to be to say yes to such a horrifying concept, no offense.

It's all meant positively, of course. It's been a couple of days since I've seen it and I chose not to write anything about it until after I had given it some time. See if it sticks, so to say. And it does. So yeah, this review probably comes down to the same conclusion as it would've earlier. Anywhore, time to shine my light on some more interesting assets. One of the first things that you will notice is how long each shot is, they literally go on for minutes and minutes, with the most uncomfortable stuff going on in them.

In the end there's little to nothing that I can come up with to bitch about. And why would I? Finally something that proves that this 'subgenre' (not really, right) is still alive. It's a shocking home invasion flick with a refreshing approach. We know 'Ils' and we all know the classic 'Last House on the Left'... yet this feels completely different, look-wise as well as the feel of it. Keep an eye out for this one! Definitely a soon to be cult classic.

A masterpiece of independent horror!
christophermcclymont15 April 2013
Cheap scares? Nope. Amateur CGI? Nope! Tired ideas? Nope!!! A potent blend of home invasion and found footage? YES! What horror fans wanted to see instead of the usual regurgitation of remakes and sequels? YES! Hilariously juxtaposed one liners? YES :-) All that with a very serious undertone and sadly, all too realistic portrayal the dark side of human nature in the form of three psychotic Neo Nazis.

The first few moments of Hate Crime were relatively positive and contrasted so strongly with the carnage that followed, it doubled the impact. I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing(humiliation, gleeful murder, torture, rape...) and how quickly, heartlessly and, most probably, realistically things deteriorated into absolute hell.

The carnage doesn't stop and not once did I pause it, my eyes were glued from beginning to end. Once the credits rolled, the hair stood up on the back of my neck...I was genuinely blown away, I'd just experienced a masterpiece of independent cinema. This is a must see for all fans of the extreme!

My Review Of "Hate Crime"
ASouthernHorrorFan24 July 2013
James Cullen Bressack's "Hate Crime" is the story of a family on the verge. On the verge of frustrations, personal turmoil, and unfortunately for them all – on the verge of a horrific night of brutality. Starring Jody Barton, Nicholas Clark, Greg DePetro, Debbie Diesel, Tim Moran, Ian Roberts, Sloane Morgan Siegel and Maggie Wagner the film opens on the night of the youngest child's birthday. Thinks turn sour when the family is held hostage by masked gunmen. It is a nightmare that feels ripped from the pages of today's newspapers.

Right from the beginning "Hate Crime" is a full throttled intense nightmare that feels awkwardly realistic and brutally honest in it's graphic depiction of some of the truest fears man could conjure. The concept of becoming victims in the sanctity of our own home out of ignorance and hatred. Violated and tormented at the hands of psychotics' is a story all to real and James Cullen Bressack puts you at the scene of the crime with pure – cruel intent that is viciously to the point, a point made perfect. This film makes a statement and opens our eyes to how blatant and evil hatred truly is.

Currently only scheduled for future festival screening "Hate Crime" is just as the title suggests. One hour and twelve minutes of a continuous hate crime that holds on to you until the bloody and gruesome end. (On a personal note I now am fully assured to check my locks at night, just in case I wasn't before). The story that transpires on screen feels almost unscripted. As if Bressack simply told the actors who their characters where and allowed them to run with it bringing the dialogue to a disturbing realism that is disturbingly hypnotic. Even though the acting and the action seem wild and out of control, the sheer power of the scenes unfolding make you feel every second of this film. That was as I assume the intend of the directing. Because no crime nor violent scenario is ever going to feel controlled or be inherently controllable. That is a good thing. Wild and out of control is the only way you could write or direct such a strong subject material and not come off cheesy. "Hate Crime" is a truly terrifying tale that lies in the back of all our minds when we shut our doors as the sun goes down. This is one intense and tragic and captivating film in it's graphic gritty realness. "Hate Crime" is one to watch. A truly insane psychotic and powerful Indie movie with one equally powerful message. If you get a chance then I suggest you see this film.

Most Disturbing Film
meredithjillbrown22 December 2014
Ever been punched in the gut? Kicked in the face? Thrown down a flight of stairs? Me either but I imagine what it must feel like after viewing Hate Crime! This is a relentless ride through ultra violence where nothing is taboo. A Jewish suburban family is celebrating the birthday of their youngest child when an unforeseen home invasion takes over in the form of found footage. Three steroid pumped neo-Nazi thugs decide to have some fun by displaying their hatred of Jews in a series of torture, rape and brutality. Highly disturbing, sadly real. This will stay with you for a long time afterwards. James Cullen Bressack's brilliance is simplistic in form, driving home a lesson in racial/anti- semitic tension. If you have a strong stomach check this out!
