Breaking Bad is the Best
readjacksonporter8 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a writer, and being a writer, I become very emotionally invested in stories and their characters, and so far in Breaking Bad, I haven't found myself very emotionally invested. Yes I care, yes I'm rooting for some characters, but I've never found myself really attached.

I've read some threads and reviews already on this episode and those who wrote them stated that this is the episode in Breaking Bad when you realize who you care for, who you're truly rooting for.

And that was no exception to me. When Hank called Marie, I knew without a doubt that Uncle Jack and his men were going to show up. I knew when Hank told Marie he loved her that he wasn't getting out of the desert. I knew Walt was gonna get away. And I didn't want to believe it, but it happened.

Jack and his men showed up, and it's the first time the show has used slow motion, and I started saying, "No, no, no. Please God, no." And then they opened fire, and yeah, I realized that I'm truly rooting for Hank, that I truly care about Hank and Steve and even Jesse, and a small part of me still cares for Walt, because he still cares about Hank. He still cares about Jesse.

And then the episode ended, and I'm pretty sure I swore out loud.

Anyway, I've never become so involved in a TV show to the point where I'm breathing hard and saying, "No, no, no" out loud. Well done Vince Gilligan and Team. You've truly done it.

Breaking Bad is arguably the greatest show of all time, because it takes an average man, and turns him into a lunatic sociopath obsessed with money and building a legend of himself. It takes a punk pothead kid and turns him into a guilt-ridden man driven by revenge. It takes a very 2-D character of a man, and turns him into the definition of good, turns him into an everyday, ordinary cop who becomes, in a small sense, a patriot filled with an unshakable feeling of betrayal and an unbound drive to take down the man who has ruined so many lives. It takes a mom and makes her into a trapped, paranoid woman who's goodness is eventually spoiled. It turns lies into death-and-life conflicts, hope into a black light, anticipation to an incomparable level, writing to the ability it's never been brought to before, and goodness to evil.

It takes television to an expectation that may never be met again.

Wow!!!
ljs37999 September 2013
Honestly,I can't think of anything else that can put into the review summary. My heart races more when watching this show than anywhere else, even when doing sports. The amount of genius and intensity put into this show is...is...I cant even begin to describe it.

Its actually always quite hard to wright reviews for this show because of 2 reason. Firstly, my hands are shaking out of excitement which makes it hard to type. Secondly, there are so many emotions racing through my head which makes it hard for to concentrate.

Breaking Bad will forever be the most intense and addictive show ever created. Vince Gilligan and the other writers are all geniuses and should be honored in some way for this show. The actors are all brilliant, but we already know that.

10000000/10!!!!

To hajilee!
siray7 September 2013
This episode is ingenious, clever, intense, crazy and overall amazing which is why i felt compelled to write a review.Well done Vince. Very well done. This episode reminded me exactly why Breaking Bad is the greatest show ever. Not saying the last few episodes were bad its just that they weren't The best. This episode was brilliantly written, engaging, and extremely Intense.

There are in fact only four more episodes of this whole series left and I can't even begin to think about what could happen. Not gonna spoil anything but this episode is powerful, psychological and very dramatic and i love how Gilligan succeeded in creating tension with simply drama not just action and fighting.. acting is great as always, nice plot progression and my gut tells me that the next episode is going to be great! I mean I'm starting to feel the same tension i felt in the last few episodes of season 4!

We're beginning to see so much of Gus Fring in Walter White. In the beginning episodes the towel under knees scene, walt being overly- cautiousness, the conversation in the car, hiring assassins, all the qualities of Gus fring we can see walter adopting them episode by episode.

Whoever hasn't watched Breaking Bad, you simply miss the best drama series ever made. Breaking Bad plays in another league. And i watched all great drama series, Mad Men, Sopranos, The Wire.... etc etc. totally different league. The Acting would be Oscar worthy..

Can it get any better than this?
Potepuh9 September 2013
Wow. People, if you aren't already deep into Breaking Bad, start watching the show now. Like all previous episodes, this one is again a brutal tension machine, forcing you to watch it with your eyes wiiiide open until the very end of the episode. And then you're like: OK, now we wait again, seven days until the next episode, seven looong days.

I can't imagine how the producers can make the show any more intense, as this episode was insane, but we all know they will find a way.

Breaking Bad once more delivers great acting (Jesse kills it in this episode and i finally really warmed up to Huell), awesome sounds and of course killer story. As if we are surprised.

Excellent, really. 10/10

Tilen out.

Another fantastic episode. Walt is driven to the extreme here and just when all seems at an end we get a closing twist that changes everything. Superb acting across the board and all of the characters pushed to their respective limits. Great TV.

"To'hajiilee" is the "dead freight" of the Second half of season 5
amirdbw079 September 2013
The fact that right now this episode has a 9.8 and many reviews with a 10 rating shows that how great and gut wrenching this episode exactly was.I don't think I can say anything that has not been said by other viewers. breaking bad is the opposite of everything that is wrong with TV right now. Acting, cinematography, music, directing and writing seems to work together beautifully and as it gets further the become more harmonic. this the last episode of the show which has been written by "George mastras".After Vince Giligan he is my favorite writer on this show.true, many ideas of the show is from Vince and the whole writing team but you got to admire that every episode which is written by "George mastras" is a work of art.His episodes are thrilling, gut-wrenching, shocking and funny in an unusual way. "dead fright", "crawl space","Crazy Handful of Nothing'" are just a few of them. All of them are between the show's best episodes and "To'hajiilee" … honestly I don't know what to say.i was excited, shocked and so angry cause why they ended it right there !

Warning: Spoilers
A wonderful episode and one of the best episodes you have ever watched, the ending scene is one of the most exciting scenes ever, excited to fight Jack and his gang with Hank and Steve, the episode ended at a critical time, I am very excited for the next episode, especially since it is the highest rated episode in history. And she hated Jesse for betraying Walt, even though Walt cared about him, but he did not understand it

Breaking Bad Outdoing Themselves for the Thousandth Time!
sitanshugreat9 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Breaking Bad continues the tradition of "Outdoing Themselves". And with the latest episode, they have confirmed that the writers are using 100% of their Grey matter.

Frankly speaking, it surprises me how the writers are able to achieve these new heights. Every time a new episode arrives, I am just waiting for the writers to make a mistake. But, every time they are able to wrong me with amazing confidence.

With this episode, my faith in Breaking Bad has been reinforced 1000 times. Our favorite anti-hero Walter White is tested beyond his capacity. And so are we, viewers. The last ten minutes are indisputably the most exhilarating moments ever encountered on television. It's like a roller-coaster ride that decelerates to zero moments before it reaches its maximum speed. That's right. When the screen blacks out, you are literally left wanting for more(again, another Breaking Bad Tradition!).

One of the reviews I came across beautifully described what happens in this mind-blasting, nail-biting and hair-raising episode:

"Walt, trapped in the back of a truck, powerless at last, his hands cuffed and his voice muffled, as the forces he has unleashed attempt to destroy the one thing he swore to protect."

A reunion in the desert
Tweekums7 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
After the events of the previous episode Walt decides to call Todd's uncle to have Jesse killed while Jesse is telling Hank just how to catch Walt… go after his money. Of course only Walt actually knows where he is but that doesn't mean it can't be found. Saul's bodyguard Huell is convinced that he is on the list of loose ends Walt is clearing up so tells Hank what little he knows and that is that Walt had him clean the van before returning it to the rental agency. The company don't have trackers on their vans but Walt doesn't know that so a call from Jesse and a photo of a barrel full of money convince him that Jesse is out in the desert about to burn the cash. He rushes out only to find Jesse isn't there; before he can leave he sees a car approaching so calls Todd's uncle for back up… not knowing that Hank is in the car. This leads to a standoff which doesn't look like it will end well.

This was one of the tensest episodes to date; with only a few episodes to go there is a feeling that nobody is safe. It is interesting to see that even though Walt has most definitely gone to the 'dark side' he still cares about some people; he may want Jesse dead but he is insistent that he doesn't suffer and he frantically tells Todd's uncle to stand down when Hank is in danger. We get plenty of great little scenes before the finale; most notably when we see Lydia is not satisfied with the quality of Todd's product and later when Huell is tricked into talking about the van. It is however the finale that will stick in viewers' minds as we get a dramatic shootout; even before Todd's uncle and his men turn up the tension was incredibly high. This scene was one of the most exciting to date even though it did have one flaw… how on earth did people firing automatic weapons at close range manage to miss to relatively lightly armed men standing in the open! Still when things are as exciting as this I think such details can be forgiven… I both can't wait and somewhat dread to see what happens next!

Out Heisenberg Heisenberg
lightningdays11 September 2013
What a ride! This season just keeps getting better and better. To'hajiilee was fantastic. For the first time ever we see the tables turn against Walter. Before this, Walt was always able to come up with smart and creative ways to find solutions to his problems, but this time he was trapped. Unable to become victorious, and helplessly watch as the drastic events unfolded without being able to even lift a finger really shows the role switch portrayed in this episode.

Hank was fantastic. Devising a plan at par to what Heisenberg usually comes up which emphasizes the desire he has to take Walt down.

We've seen this before. Once. In crawl space, Walt was fearing for his life, and felt helpless for a while. Since the outcome of this event is still unknown, and the best is yet to come, Heisenberg might just grab the ledge at the end of the cliff, create a convoluted plan that just might save his behind from all this chaos.

As Vince best put it, THE BEST IS YET TO COME!

Warning: Spoilers
For 5 seasons, breaking bad has given us so many intense with Gus's death, and many other things, but i have to say this episode is one of the most intense episodes ever for breaking bad, and maybe for any show out there. From beginning to end, the show delivers brilliant acting, intense sequences, and funny moments. I was laughing a lot when the whole Jesse dead plan thing was explained to huell. Michelle Maclaren and George Mastras(To'hajiilee's writers and directors) deliver one of the best episodes to ever come on this show. if you have not watched this show or are not really into it, i highly advise you to continue or start this show because you will not regret it. 3 episodes left...

Brilliant, until the end
sansanome9 September 2013
The outline of the story in To'hajiilee is fantastic, as is the directing, acting, camera work. It is worth watching for all of this, and will leave most viewers on the edge of their seats. The climactic buildup in the final 10 minutes of To'hajiilee is as good as it gets with TV or cinema. In addition, the episode truly feels like a worthy conclusion, that we have very nearly come full circle. There are fitting remembrances of past events that take us all the way back to Walt and Jesse's first cook.

However, the episode falls apart in some of the details. The ending, which could have been one for the ages, suffers the most egregious faults. These trace back to Season 5 Episode 10 - Buried. For me Buried was Breaking Bad's weakest episode over 5 seasons, with cardboard cutout villains and a gun battle (implied)that was just silly. I'll simply say that Uncle Jack and company come off as unbelievably invincible there. With To'hajiilee they suddenly become worthlessly incompetent.

So with To'hajiilee we have these brilliant, poignant, heart stopping 10 minutes of an ending, BUT then the closing seconds waste it all. What should have happened did not, and instead the writers pull us screaming into the next episode. Why? I hope that it was just a cheap stunt to leave us hanging for what should inevitably come next. But if Hank and Steve get written out of the fix they are in, my passion for Breaking Bad is done.

If not for those closing seconds, I would give To'hajillee a 9 or maybe even a 10. The 6 is for going with the standard Hollywood ending.

The biggest flawed episode so far.
NurgleTheUnclean13 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
While it wasn't the worst TV I have seen this is completely ridiculous episode in so many ways. First, Walter is so much more careful in previous episodes that it really out of character for him to be so reckless with the whole desert money thing, and the hit on Jessie thing.

I was willing to overlook that to a point until the big final shootout thing. This scene was so riddled with technical flaws that it just made the whole episode silly.

First these bad guy backup seems to arrive in about 5-10 mins, not sure how far away they were when Walter called them but it seemed way too fast. Hank and Gomez should have rushed to a covered position behind the front wheel of the SUV as soon as they saw the other vehicles coming. But here's this biggie. There's 6 guys 3 with rifles 1 with an automatic shotgun and 2 with pistols, at about 30 yards of distance in supported firing positions with 2 soft targets in the open, with clear weather and visibility. This scenario there should have been 2 shots, one to the head of each Hank and Gomez, in 1 second. If they were really bad shots then maybe hit them in the chest instead.

Oh no, they proceed to fire off hundreds of rounds which seem to be all aimed at the front fender of the SUV. Not one bullet can find Hank or Gomez. Unbelievable! I think this firefight would have been over faster If I was out there throwing rocks at them.

I like a good firefight like anyone, but this was just plain stupid. They could have easily fixed this scene by introducing a sandstorm, have Hank and Gomez dive for hard cover, increase the engagement distance, put lesser weapons in the hands of the bad guys, light off some smoke grenades, fire from moving vehicles, or any combination of these things.

Too Many Things to Handle!
Hitchcoc12 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Some would say that what happens is out of character for Walt. The point here is that he has seldom been put into so many difficult situations in such a rapid fire way. He doesn't check carefully to see if Jesse's threat is real, but the thought of his family losing everything is the one trigger that sets him off. The problem is that these mercenary killers have tunnel vision. Walter deserves to die. He should, at least, spend remaining days in prison. The reason for the ten is the amped up intensity. When I think of similar TV, I still have to rank this so far above the rest.

Greatest Show on Earth
tomdavie9 September 2013
I have watched this show since its inception 5 years ago. I can tell you that it is probably the greatest TV series ever made. Its acting is flawless. Its screenplay is pristine.

Every episode I watch makes me feel like someone has punched me in the gut. I end up so raw, cursing the fact I have to wait another week until the next show. They should just hook us Breaking Bad junkies up to intravenous so we can get our fix 24/7.

By now, I am certain every character has become a favorite sports team. There is team Walter. Team Jesse . Team Hank and team Skyler/ Walt Jr. Each with a loyal following who are trying to figure out which team wins the super-bowl in the final episode.

I wonder if Saul will continue the effort in his spin off . Perhaps some of the cast will appear on it once in a while just to keep us hoping there will be more episodes.

After 5 years I know I am headed for some very serious withdrawal.

WalterSoprano8 September 2013
This episode was intense and in believable. So far this episode has the best ending in the series yet this episode shows that these last episodes are going to be legendary. Keep watching and remember that this is the best show in the history of the universe.

Just wait til next week for only god knows what is going to happen the twist was no joke so shocking I'm shaking. I won't spoil anything to make sure you experience this the same way I did. This episode should be rated higher than 10/10 this episodes ending is 10 times more shocking than any of the other endings in breaking bad history. Believe me you will not be disappointed it is going to be burned into my brain for the next however many years.

All I can say is Breaking bad is at a new height for the series and it isn't coming back down its only going higher.

courtjes8 September 2013
Every time I think I just saw the best TV episode ever, Breaking Bad reaches new heights of suspense, action, character development and constant unpredictability. The camera angles, music and acting are beyond outstanding. Little touches like the song playing in the background when Todd and Lydia talk add to the entertainment value. I started on Season 1 on Netflix until I got caught up real time. There are a few shows I put in their own special Oscar category and Breaking Bad is at the top of the list. If you have never seen it, start with Season 1, Episode 1 and after a few episodes you will be completely hooked. It's going to be truly a loss to TV when the show is over. Kudos to all involved in this fantastic experience!

The Fun Begins!
g-bodyl24 February 2015
This is the thirteenth episode of the fifth season of Breaking Bad and as we start the last quarter of the season, this is where the fun truly begins. The episode is fast-paced as we everyone rushing about to take each other down. The ending is one thing to keep an eye on, but it's a spectacular cliffhanger.

In this episode, "To'hajiilee," Walt and Hank has a plan to bring hard evidence upon Walt and convict him of being Heisenberg. Walt, of course, takes the bait and brings trouble to himself. Walt also decides to call Todd's uncle to bring a hit against Jesse.

Overall, I really thought this was an amazing episode. It becomes clear that the final three episodes are going to be hard to watch. But I am excited all the same.

My Grade: A+

Best Breaking Bad Episode
antzdn15 October 2023
The unbelievable intensity , and the legendary twist that will make you sad that you're one episode less off finishing the greatest series in modern tv history.

Just When you think you have seen it all in Breaking Bad , they raise new heights!

I would rate this episode more than 10/10 if there was an option , the shock , the thrill..

Surely i am not going to spoil for the lucky people that did not have the chance to watch this episode (and series) for the first time ever,

Every Character in this series should have its own backstory series , so we can always witness a breaking bad moment.

10000 / 10.

The desert scene is first-rate and eclipses some of the weaker parts of "To'hajiilee"
stillworkingfortheknife14 February 2014
The episode with the ineffable title "To'hajiilee" conjures up a situation nearly (stress that) impossible to solve plausibly with its major cliffhanger and thus understandably impresses nearly everyone that watches it, but it's not flawless and not even that remarkable when the last 15 minutes are factored out.

The opening sequence reminds us that Todd and Lydia still play a part in the plot and also reintroduces the former's neo-Nazi buddies that I'm sure his parents are glad to see him hang out with. It's a slow start for an episode that is soon to become highly eventful, but brings us up to date to some story details in a manner not overly interesting – though I loved to see Laura Fraser again, who never fails to amuse me as Lydia. Después, there's some fun time with Huell (you just got to love Lavell Crawford) and a lot of talk in multiple other situations that lacks the witty dialogue of preceding episodes and goes on for a bit too long across the board, especially with the scenes at the car wash.

Fortunately, the focus shifts away from Walt Jr learning how to be a proper cashier at his parents' car wash after a while and some thrill starts to build up. And boy, that's what I call thrill. Way out in the desert, a phenomenal showdown takes place that not only deserves this attribute due to its infinite tension, but also because of the hugely interesting things it tells us about the characters (there's some clear Walt/Gus resemblance to discern, not for the only time in the series). This nerve-stretching confrontation is only interrupted by a characteristically hysterical one-liner Marie adds when on the phone with Hank – "Why is there what looks like brains in our garbage can?"

As the desert sequence takes up quite an amount of "To'hajiilee"'s total, it also has a bearing on the rating that would have been far lower without it. I just won't be too petty, considering how extremely this episode made me want to see the final three the first time I watched it. As a matter of fact, I still do. So it's on to "Ozymandias" right away.

the last 10 seconds...
mags-789-26915811 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Don't you get disappointed, when a perfectly written script to a movie, eventually gets messed up by failing to keep up with the standards it set for itself right from the beginning? Well, this is exactly what happened with "To'hajiilee". I've been watching Breaking Bad with such admiration, episode by episode. A plain and simple progression of the show, revolving around a theme adopted by many in the past and present ("The Sopranos", "Boardwalk Empire" etc.). What distinguishes Breaking Bad from other great shows, is it's genuineness. Where a simple storyline of a man desperate to provide for his family while dying from cancer, becomes a complex search for his inner self. An ordinary man, working as a high school chemistry teacher turning into an omniscient drug-lord. Reminiscent of the infamous Tony Montana only with a resolute sense of good and evil, an educated law-abiding person (turning into Gus). So what exactly happened? I can only guess the writers, while working on the details for this episode, at the end, just realized that there are three more episodes to go and thus, killing the main characters would end the entire plot of the show. The next episode will determine how much praise and fascination the show really deserves.

Silly Episode
anthony_retford13 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I noticed all of the reviewers were very much over-enthusiastic in their reviews. Maybe they have lost their sense of objectivity.

There is no way that Walt would not have checked with the rental location about the GPS, especially after receiving a call from Jesse. Sol told him he was being set up but he gets the message and panics, which is not what he would have done. Could not Walt have figured out that Jesse was with Hank? He found that he did not know and that was the one place left. Could he not have figured out that Hank would try anything to get him?

Finally, in the shootout it is impossible that no one was hit. Hank was firing his weapon over and over again into empty air, and at a distance of about 50 feet. Supposedly he spent time in a range practicing. And when the firing began the two of them were in the open and dozens of bullets were fired at them and everyone missed. Impossible!
