Another compelling mystery.

A young American student dies in a tragic accident, a woman is charged with drink driving, but the third party disappears, Grace believes it's a case of murder, but another Detective always seems to be a step ahead.

A much more down to Earth, less grizzly case than previous episodes, but still full of intrigue, engaging compelling drama. A more casual pace, it reminded me, and I'm not sure why, of an episode of Lewis.

The twist was well played, if perhaps not thoroughly unexpected, but we'll done though. Acting wise it was fantastic, huge credit to Sara Stewart, she was superb.

The scenes between Grace and Glenn were fantastic, the latter perhaps having his best episode so far, I really did enjoy his story. The ending was a real nail biter.

Bella and Norman are becoming a really interesting duo, with every episode that passes, they seem to develop, Parkinson and Elphinstone are great, there's definitely something shady about Norman.

Again they don't fail to show off Brighton's wonderful coastline.

8/10.

Dead Man's Grip

Warning: Spoilers
Tony Robinson is a young cyclist who gets run over by a blue pick up in a traffic collision where a few other cars were involved.

The driver of the pick up truck fled the scene. One lady Carly Chase swerved her car to avoid hitting Tony but is arrested for drink driving.

DSI Grace thinks that Tony might have been targeted. His backpack contained Ecstasy pills. Until then the police need to find the driver of the pick up truck.

Soon other people involved in the collision turn up dead, there is evidence they might have been tortured before they died.

Tony's American parents are not happy about the speed of the investigation. They talk to the journalist Kevin Spinella about their misgivings.

Grace is not happy with Spinella because of the scoops he has been getting. Indicating that Spinella has been obtaining inside information.

The story got confusing with too many names being bandied about and no face to place them. Eventually I was left confused as to who died before I got to the why.

The penny did drop that Tony's parents had hired a hitman. His mother was related to a notorious crime family. Again not explored properly, why would Carly's son be singled. Apart from being over the drink limit, Carly did not hit Tony.

Fast-moving, perhaps too much so!

It's difficult for a TV detective series to find an acceptable place for itself and its central character in an over-crowded market - and to portray police procedures in way that is not too unrealistic.

"Grace" succeeds reasonably well, though the John Simm character is a bit flat, as are most of his team, but then we don't want a collection of larger-than-life police officers. Craig Parkinson as DS Norman Potting does provide the occasional spark, as when , unabashed, he interviewed his superior, ACC Cassian Pewe, in the previous episode

Others have remarked about the prompt arrival of DSI Grace and most of his team to investigate a traffic accident - and before Ecstasy tablets were discovered on the victim. Still, I suppose that the plot had to progress quickly, as indeed it did, with a bewildering succession of names being introduced, followed by the characters themselves. I had to work hard to keep up, and I remained confused about why some were killed.

The bereaved mother's relatively civil reception of the driver who'd killed her son was surprising in the light of future developments.

An enthusiastic reviewer of the book on which this episode is based has remarked "I have to admit that I did slightly have to suspend my disbelief at the coincidences needed for the plot to work", and thus it was with this adaptation. But then this a very frequent feature of detective fiction.

I confess to not being too bothered with the private lives of Grace and his sergeant, though the re-appearance of the former's wife, long presumed to be dead, is intriguing.

Yikes...

Dull and underwhelming episode, mostly wooden dialogue and dramatic music, with no meat on the bones whatsoever. Sara Stewart's attempt at an American accent is gut-wrenchingly awful and the others weren't that much better. Not really sure if by the end of the episode I'd lost track of what killer they were after, or if I'd simply lost interest?. The Sandy storyline is going nowhere... and Spinella is equally as pointless.

Overall I'm a huge fan of this show and this is the definitely the first and only episode of Grace that I haven't enjoyed so far, but they definitely cut corners on this one!
