In dueling pre-upfront press conferences Thursday, Spanish-language media rivals Univision and Telemundo revealed a similar objective: to explore a more diversified, multi-generational, multi-platform programming aimed at a fast-evolving U.S. Hispanic market.
The stakes for both networks are high. The U.S. Hispanic population represents $1.3 trillion in spending power, which is projected to grow to $1.9 trillion by 2022.
Univision, long dependent on Mexican media giant Televisa to provide its programming, has been playing catch up with NBCUniversal-owned Telemundo, which has been producing its own shows for years. To streamline the production of content across Televisa and Univision, Isaac Lee was named chief content officer of both companies in January 2017.
Among Univision-Televisa’s joint initiatives to ramp up and diversify programming on both networks is what is billed as the first global Spanish-language TV pilot season, which resulted in more than 100 submissions from all over the world.

During its upfront press conference this morning, Telemundo announced two English-language scripted series, including an English-language remake of the show that inspired ABC’s Ugly Betty, as well as a Spanish-language version of The Voice.
Betty in New York (a working title) is billed as “the modern retelling of the ground-breaking story, Yo soy Betty, la fea. The reboot, which is still casting, centers on Beatriz Aurora Rincon Lozano, a young climber who takes a job at V&M Fashion as secretary to the company president. A teaser reel showed her walking through New York’s Times Square, marveling in a voiceover, “Who would’ve thought I’d end up here, after all the chaos I created?”
Ugly Betty ran on ABC from 2006 to 2010 and made a star of America Ferrera. It also popularized the concept of adapting international programming for American audiences, a feat not all broadcast networks managed to pull off.

This little man is stealing the show. Paulina Rubio's boyfriend Gerardo "Jerry" Bazua shared this adorable photo of himself with the pair's son Eros as they enjoyed a pool day on Fourth of July. Face swapping is really fun. And sometimes...it can be really scary. Just the right mix of both, right? Take for instance, Gloria Trevi's face swap with none other than J Balvin. The Mexican singer's face appeared on Balvin's body with a hat, leather jacket, and some of his facial hair. But then things got really funny when we saw him with Trevi's glamorous blonde hair, which was parted to the side in a braid. She didn't stop there and continued the fun with Alejandro Sanz. Balvin went with the flow and face swapped with Sanz. Pretty epic. The three artists are currently in Mexico as coaches on La Voz…México. Balvin...

It’s another high note for La Voz Kids. On Sunday, 2.42 million viewers watched the Spanish-language version of NBC’s The Voice on Telemundo, with an audience of 1.225 million in the adults 18-49 demographic. That is a 17% viewership jump and an 18% demo jump for the 8-10 Pm freshman. More significantly, while The Voice itself has hit new lows this season, La Voz Kids has grown significantly since its May 5 debut. The series is up 43% in total viewership and 40% in the key demo since the 1.695 million total viewers and 873,000 18-49s it had at the beginning of last month. That debut made Los Voz Kids the highest-rated reality series ever on the Comcast-owned network. Hosted by Daisy Fuentes and Jorge Bernal, La Voz Kids features Prince Royce, Roberto Tapia and recently named new The X Factor judge Paulina Rubio as judges. Unlike its NBC parent, the show focuses on children between...
