Who Wants to Be a Godparent (#8.4)
ComedyFan20103 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is a pretty good episode on how Marshall and Lily try to decide who will be the godparent.

The fun part was both seeing how their three friends tried to get the title with teddy bears and Barney's funny songs. And also the game was a great addition where we had many fun answers and moments.

And it also ends pretty sweet. All three are getting the title of the godparent as they are all their best friends. And Lily and Marshall go back to being great friends by taking down the rate 8 rule, because as Marshall so very well said since their are their friends everything in their lives is 8 and above. People who have kids should all learn from this.

Pity The Show Doesn't Have An Eight Or Over Rule
slightlymad2212 February 2015
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear!! The return to form was only brief, as this was a dire episode, that not even the brilliant Neil Patrick Harris could save with his fun performance as Barney.

Plot In A Paragraph: After a near death experience Marshall and Lily struggle to decide who to have as Marvin godparent in the event of their death. Thought Marshall being Marshall he invents a game 'Who Wants To Be A Godparent' which the gang spend the night playing.

Watching how The three friends would raise Marvin did have its moments, and had some really funny parts. However overall the eight or over rule, has hindered Marshall and Lily and not made them look very good

A generous 7/10 for the three flash forwards!!

Marshall and lily argue over who gets to be the guardian after Marshall and Lily's death. this leads to fiery competition between Ted, barney and robin. in the end it results in a game show called who wants to be a god parent.

this is a classic himym episode and is full of laughs and it celebrates what himym is about laughs and hysterical romance not seriousness and tragedy. i love this episode and i love little Marvin's entry to the himym family. in the end himym is a funny hysterical family adult romantic comedy. the above summary title is a secret which can only be revealed when you see the episode yourself

This episode certainly is not an 8 or higher!

Warning: Spoilers
The fourth episode of the already dry and lackluster eight season is no better than the previous episode. Every bit of 'humour' injected into this episode falls under as cliché, without a single laugh being well earned.

When the show doesn't focus on the dramatic elements of Robin's life (as it did quite well in the seventh season), the character is downright awful. Barney's womanizing is becoming a bit repetitive at this point, partly because the character is in the midst of undergoing a major character arc. Ted's constant search for "The One" is also terribly frustrating, and when the writers bring back Victoria, they do not choose to focus on that relationship. Rather, Victoria has now been delegated to cheap comedy, rather than a character with a lot of warmth and heart as she was in the first and seventh seasons.

The game in the episode is overlong and unfunny. There is not a single good laugh, and the fact that the episode resorts to the most clichéd means of resolving this issue (delegating each of the three as the guardians of Marvin) is more frustrating. Robin would make a terrible parent, as would Barney. Ted is the only sensible and logical choice, as he would make a fine parent. It is frustrating to see Lily and Marshall make such a idiotic decision, whilst we as an audience are left to see the only logical option.

This episode is painfully unfunny, even when it tries to be most funny. HIMYM needs to do a special turnaround....perhaps with Victoria.

Outrageous

Ok this was an extremely silly episode! Barney (just look at his character till this ep. ) and Robin (who has clearly stated that she doesn't want to have kids! Ever! Let alone nurture somebody else's kids!) competing over who will possibly take custody if something tragic happens! How does it make sense?

Shamefully not funny and awfully boring to the point of fast-forwarding the season.

The most out of character episode, so far
Gernot S.5 September 2021
HIMYM had quite a few out of character episodes, but this one takes the cake. Robin and/or Barney wanting to raise a kid, all of a sudden?

Just for the sake of jokes or storytelling... (Sadly, most comedy shows fall prey to that writing laziness, sooner or later.) If you can get over that (I couldn't), there's quite some laughs in it.
