David Bruckner, who has directed The Ritual, The Night House, and the Hellraiser reboot, as well as segments of The Signal, V/H/S, Southbound, V/H/S/85, and episodes of the Shudder Creepshow series, is gearing up to direct a new remake of The Blob – and Deadline reports that he has already lined up another genre project. Bruckner will be directing the mysterious horror thriller Mice for A24.
Details on the plot of Mice are being kept under wraps. Whatever the story it is, it has come from the minds of writing duo Todd Spence and Zak White. Spence and White also have Creepshow experience, as they wrote the stories Doodles, George Romero in 3D, and Something Burrowed, Something Blue for the fourth season of the series. Molly Shannon, who mined her Irish background to create delightful characters on Saturday Night Live and beyond, is the latest honoree to be announced for the 18th annual Oscar Wilde Awards.
The event, organized by the US-Ireland Alliance, celebrates the work of those from Ireland — and those with Irish roots, as in Shannon’s case — who contribute to film, television and music. It’s set for March 7, three days before the Academy Awards, at the Santa Monica home of Bad Robot, J.J. Abrams and Katie McGrath’s production company.
Shannon, who grew up in Shaker Heights, Ohio, joins previously announced honorees Pierce Brosnan (born in Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland) and Oscar-winning VFX artist Richard Baneham (born in Dublin).
“Molly’s Irish American characters on Saturday Night Live — like Mary Katherine Gallagher and Sally O’Malley — are iconic,” Trina Vargo, founder of the US-Ireland Alliance, said in a statement.

A24 has a reputation as one of the coolest indie movie “brands” today.
Through dozens of films, they have established themselves as arbiters of extremely good taste, maintaining relationships with their favorite filmmakers while taking big swings on new talent. They have also shown themselves to be crack marketers of their own product (how many boutique film studios inspire young fans to sweat sweatshirts emblazoned with their logo?)
This brand awareness is quite powerful. Younger filmgoers know an A24 movie when they see them; and they go see movies because the studio is behind them. This knowingness, a contract between the studio and the audience, extends to A24’s horror output, which is even more easily identifiable. “It’s an A24 horror movie,” you’ll say. And whoever you’re talking to will know exactly what you mean. Maybe it’s a little folksy, maybe it’s a little techy,...

A24 has confirmed that they’re re-teaming with Halina Reijn, the director of their slasher satire Bodies Bodies Bodies, on a erotic thriller called Babygirl – and an impressive cast has already been assembled for the film. Here’s the line-up: Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos), Antonio Banderas (Desperado), Harris Dickinson (The Iron Claw), Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me), and Jean Reno (Léon: The Professional).
According to Deadline, Reijn will be working from a screenplay she wrote herself. The story she crafted for this one centers on a successful CEO who begins an illicit affair with her much younger intern. Given the “thriller” part of the “erotic thriller” description, we have to assume that this affair goes terribly wrong in some way… probably in a way that involves more than just hurt feelings.

It is a rare thing when just the studio attached to a movie can get butts in seats, but that is just what Independent Film Company A24 has done since they were formed in 2012. From humble beginnings with the Roman Coppola directed A Glimpse Inside The Mind of Charles Swan III to break out hits like Ex Machine and The Witch. More recently the studio became the first one to ever sweep the top six awards at this past years Oscars when their films Everything Everywhere All At Once and The Whale took home Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director and Best Picture. As their latest film Talk To Me continues to put up impressive numbers at the box office, we wanted to know: What A24 releases has been your favorite? We compiled a pretty comprehensive list, but if you don’t see your favorite listed,...

Editor’s note: this blog originally ran in October of last year. Spin Me Round is now available to stream on Hulu. Special thanks to Jeff Baena and author Kristopher Hewkin.

Filmmaker Jeff Baena has consistently defied expectations over his career, taking audiences on wild rides that often veer from the comedic, to thrilling, to deeply unsettling—often within the same movie. His latest, Spin Me Round, brings his all-star comedy world repertory to Italy for a tale of sun-dappled Tuscan romance gone way, way wrong. For the second film in a row, Baena co-wrote the script with lead Alison Brie, following their first successful writing collaboration on the 2020 psychological thriller Horse Girl.
Brie stars alongside Alessandro Nivola, Molly Shannon, Aubrey Plaza (a two-time Film Independent Spirit Awards host and winner!), Lil Rel Howery, Tim Heidecker and Fred Armisen. The film tells the story of Amber (Brie), a restaurant manager...

(You can read our review at This Link.) Talk to Me went over so well with festival audiences (it has been said that even the likes of Steven Spielberg and Jordan Peele have watched and loved the film), a bidding war was launched over the distribution rights. And the winner of that bidding war, overcoming competition from studios like Universal, was A24. Deadline reports that A24 is planning to give Talk to Me a wide release on July 28th.

Home to films like “Lady Bird,” “Eighth Grade” and “Mid90s,” A24 is synonymous with a certain brand of indie, auteur-driven coming-of-age story. The company’s latest is “Funny Pages,” the debut feature film from writer-director Owen Kline (who you might recognize as Frank from “The Squid and the Whale”). Set in the suburbs of New Jersey, “Funny Pages” follows Robert (Daniel Zolghadri), a talented high schooler determined to make his way as a cartoonist. When his beloved teacher suddenly passes away, he rebels against his upper-middle class upbringing and abandons future plans to attend art school.
Robert’s decision to drop out of school, rent sketchy (i.e. illegal) lodgings in a boiler room and take a low-paying assistant job bring him into the path of Wallace (Matthew Maher), a former employee at one of the comic magazines Robert idolizes. With the singular goal of getting Wallace to mentor him,...

There are a number of reasons to recommend Spin Me Round, a winning comedy about the manager of an Olive Garden-style restaurant who gets chosen to attend a training program in Italy. The film features a shockingly stacked supporting cast of comedy titans: Aubrey Plaza, Tim Heidecker, Molly Shannon, Fred Armisen, Lil Rel Howery, The Office’s Zach Woods, Looking’s Lauren Weedman, and High Maintenance’s Ben Sinclair. The latest from director Jeff Baena, whose strange and wildly diverse filmography includes Life After Beth and The Little Hours, Spin Me Round stood out as one of the better comedies in a strong SXSW lineup earlier this year––even its Harlequin romance novel-aping poster is a gem.
However, the top reason to see Spin Me Round—it is not even close, really—is Alison Brie landing a starring role perfectly suited for her talents. The Glow star co-wrote the script with Baena,...

And just like that, winter has come again. HBO Max’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by the return of the king. Or more accurately: the return of the queen … of the Seven Kingdoms.
Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Aug. 21, just over three years after Game of Thrones concluded in controversial fashion with “The Iron Throne.” This new series is a prequel, depicting the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons from George R.R. Martin’s lore. When dragon fights dragon, the realm will be torn asunder. But the viewer will certainly delight in all the Targaryen action.

An impressive slate of A24 films are coming to HBO Max next month, including Oscar-winners like 2015’s “Room” and Alex Garland’s directorial debut “Ex Machina.”
A total of 28 A24 films will arrive on the streamer on Aug. 1, timed to the studio’s tenth anniversary and marking the largest collection of A24 films made available to stream on the platform. Much of the lineup consists of films released prior to 2016, when A24 was still a distribution house and not yet the full-fledged studio it is today.

Exclusive: Jeff Baena’s Spin Me Round, which made its world premiere at SXSW last month, has seen its North American rights get scooped up by IFC Films and AMC+. The pic will hit theaters and VOD and stream exclusively on AMC+ this summer.
The pic reps filmmaker Baena’s reteam with Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza and Molly Shannon, who star in the film. Brie co-wrote and produced Spin Me Round, in which she plays the manager of an Italian restaurant chain who wins the opportunity to attend the franchise’s educational immersion program in Italy. What she thought would be a romantic getaway devolves into chaos and catastrophe.
Baena and Brie previously teamed on Horse Girl, she starred in and co-wrote with Baena, who also directed. Brie also appeared in Baena’s The Little Hours and Joshy. Plaza has starred in Baena’s The Little Hours, Joshy and Life After Beth.

Amy Schumer’s Oscars stand-up didn’t hold back, but what did we really expect from the “Life After Beth” comedian?
The actress, alongside co-hosts Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall, opened the March 27 ceremony with many a zinger, like how it was cheaper for the Academy to hire three female hosts than one man. While Hall thanked the opportunity to represent women of color onstage, Schumer added that she’ll be representing the “unbearable white women who call the cops when you get a little too loud.”
Yet during Schumer’s later monologue, she ribbed the Oscars Best Picture nomination for “Don’t Look Up,” joking that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences clearly “‘Don’t Look Up’ reviews.” The Adam McKay-directed film is nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Film Editing. (It’s already lost the latter two prizes.)

Amy Schumer is hoping the Oscars are anything but a “Trainwreck” when it comes to focusing on current events.
The “Life After Beth” creator revealed during “The Drew Barrymore Show” that she wants Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to virtually attend the ceremony from his war-torn country amid Russia’s invasion.
“I actually pitched — I wanted to find a way to have Zelensky satellite in or make a tape or something just because there are so many eyes on the Oscars,” Schumer said.
The 94th Academy Awards, which takes place Sunday, March 27, will still address certain political topics, though.
“I think it’s a great opportunity to at least comment on a couple of things. I have some jokes that kind of highlight the sort of current condition,” Schumer said. “I mean, there are so many awful things happening that it seems hard to focus on which one.”

Two books feature in director Jeff Baena’s new irreverent brainchild “Spin Me Round”: One is the quintessentially sentimental and aggressively life-affirming “Eat, Pray, Love,” while the other, likely more obscure for American audiences, is Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez’s gritty, nonfiction crime saga “News of a Kidnapping.”
An Olive Garden commercial that devolves into “Eyes Wide Shut,” the film fluctuates between the two distinct modes of these tomes: the artificial, improbable fantasy of a vibrant European trip where all inhibitions are put on hold, and the fear-inducing suspicion that something perverse and worthy of uncovering might be unfolding right under the surface.
True to its title, Baena’s latest takes us through more than a few tonal twists and plot turns, even if they don’t always land smoothly or humorously, in its exploration of how fooling oneself into believing a fantastical fiction can provide dangerous respite from a bland,...

There’s a euphoria among film sellers and buyers as SXSW finally convenes Friday in Austin, Texas after a three-year pandemic shutdown.
With the last two editions of the Sundance Film Festival being virtual, and the hybrid edition of TIFF seeing reduced capacities, few industry execs, and a muted atmosphere, SXSW marks the return to packed, receptive audiences; actual live pulses which can trigger good reviews and social media wattage, culminating in what some believe could be an active sales market here in Texas’s capital.
SXSW has a knack for programming comedies, genre, and genre-twisted features; titles which are best experienced by a reactive audience. Sellers previously told Deadline that virtual viewing of such fare at recent fests doesn’t really help their cause. While SXSW is enforcing vaxx cards and mask-wearing indoors, screenings will be at full capacity. In 2019, SXSW drew a reported 73K attendees alone to the...

For a decade now, Aubrey Plaza has been the star of several of the buzziest movies to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Her streak started with 2012’s “Safety Not Guaranteed” and continued every couple years with 2014’s “Life After Beth,” 2017’s “Ingrid Goes West,” and 2020’s “Black Bear.”
Plaza is back at the virtual 2022 fest with “Emily the Criminal,” a debut feature film from writer-director John Patton Ford. For Plaza, who has explored troubled characters before, such as in “Ingrid Goes West,” the film marks a bold step into the thriller realm. She spoke about that along with her director, joined by the film’s co-stars Megalyn Echikunwoke and Theo Rossi, for a conversation in TheWrap’s Sundance studio.
Ford touched upon the plot of the film. “It’s about a young woman who has a lot of student debt, who decides to become a criminal to pay her student loans,...

When the late Michael Been of The Call was working on the soundtrack to the 1992 film “Light Sleeper,” his then-teenage son, Robert Levon Been, later of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, would hide when the film’s director, Paul Schrader, came to Been’s home to check on the music’s progress.
“Everything was recorded in our house, DIY style, on analog, in the living room,” recalls Been, speaking from Vienna, Austria. “I was a snob and obnoxious and would say, ‘This is shit, this is good.’ I’d play a guitar or bass part and say, ‘Try this, try that.’ Sometimes my dad would use it. I was caught out a few times by [Schrader] who asked my dad if he was not paying him enough to bring in real musicians. But it stuck in his head enough where he might give me a call someday.”

Exclusive: Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza, Alessandro Nivola, Molly Shannon and Lil Rel Howery are set to star in Spin Me Round, an indie comedy directed by Jeff Baena from a script he wrote with Brie. Pic will be produced by the Duplass Brothers Productions and Limelight, the latter of which is fully financing the picture. Production begins next month in Italy.
Tim Heidecker, Ben Sinclair, Fred Armisen, Ayden Mayeri, Debby Ryan, Zach Woods, Ego Nwodim, Lauren Weedman, and Jake Picking round out the cast. Brie plays the manager of the Bakersfield, California franchise of the Italian chain eatery Tuscan Grove. She wins an all-expenses trip to the company’s gorgeous “institute” outside of Florence, Italy, and the chance to meet the restaurant chain’s wealthy and charismatic owner (Nivola). Along with a mismatched group of local American franchise managers, Amber finds a far different adventure than the romantic fantasy she had imagined.

While pandemic times has brought a lot of difficulties and frustrations to the film and television industries, there are advtantages: given the limitations, people are forced to get creative. What kind of work can we make when we can't physically work together? How do we adapt our work and find creative means of expression while distancing? How can we use that which is at our limited disposal, to tell the stories we need and want to tell? One such offering that explores new means and filters of expression is Cinema Toast, a limited series that takes public domain footage and gives it new twists with new voiceovers and stories. When filmmaker Lawrence Michael Levine gave the script for “Black Bear” to Aubrey Plaza, it included one hell of a direction in its final act: the leading lady “breaks down and gives the best performance that anyone has ever seen ever.” No pressure.

This Muppets Now review contains spoilers.
Muppets Now Episode 4
I should have seen the warning signs when I found out that Muppets Now was produced in six days. It’s easy to crank out several episodes so quickly when you’re filming the same segment over and over again in one go. The farther the show goes, the more annoying the lack of variety is.
As “Sleep Mode” is the fourth episode of Muppets Now, that means that there have been sixteen total segments so far. Of those sixteen, there are seven types of segments. That’s it. Only the “Muppets Masters” bit hasn’t been revisited. Meanwhile, we have had four installments of “Okey Dokey Kookin’” and “Lifestyle with Miss Piggy.”
I’m getting flashbacks to Mad TV, when they didn’t just have recurring sketches, but recurring characters who appeared to show up every single week no matter how tired their acts got.

Do you know that romantic-comedy cliché in which the mousy young woman whips off her glasses — and suddenly the brainiac “ugly duckling” blossoms into a beautiful swan that turns heads and gets the guy? That’s not what happens to the title character of Horse Girl, though for the first 15 minutes or so of Jeff Baena’s movie, you assume some variation of this is lurking just around the corner. Our heroine, Sarah (Alison Brie), is single, sweet but slightly socially awkward, and works at an arts & crafts store. In her off hours,...

Plot: A meek young woman (Alison Brie) working in a crafts store begins to lose her grip on reality. A funny thing happens about a third of the way into “Horse Girl,” Jeff Baena’s fourth Sundance feature after “Life After Beth,” “Joshy” and “The Little Hours.” Or rather, a funny thing stops happening: the familiar, steady-heartbeat rhythms of the low-budget social awkwardness comedy become erratic, tachycardiac, as the initially endearing foibles of the film’s heroine, Sarah (a revelatory Alison Brie), are found to have deeper roots and more painful ramifications than feels right to laugh at. It’s the point at which we realize that “Horse Girl” is not your classic, hackneyed Sundance indie and is instead a far weirder, harder and sadder subversion of just that stereotype. It’s the point at which the movie stops being cute, and starts being good.
The setup is such a convincing red herring though, that for a while it functions just fine as your standard offbeat dramedy, laden with...

Writer/director Jeff Baena is probably best known for two major projects. 1. Co-writing the wacky and existential “I Heart Huckabees” with David O. Russell and his Sundance debut, the amusing zom com “Life After Beth,” with Aubrey Plaza. Baena then followed it up with the medieval black comedy film “Little Hours.” His latest, ” Horse Girl,” which sounds a little bit more out there, is a darkly humorous psychological thriller which he wrote alongside actress Alison Brie (“Glow“) who also co-starred in “Little Hours.” Clearly, these two click and have created a working rhythm together they enjoy.

After more than a decade in the spotlight, two-time Golden Globe nominee Alison Brie is starting to spread her wings beyond just acting. Last year, she directed her first episode of her Netflix hit “Glow,” and 2020 will again bring her behind the camera for another joint from the streaming giant: as screenwriter on Jeff Baena’s latest, “Horse Girl.” Brie also stars in the Sundance premiere, which she wrote alongside her frequent collaborator, who has previously directed her in other Sundance offerings like “Joshy” and “The Little Hours.”
The film is the latest from Baena, who has long enjoyed toying with tropes and turning them into unexpected character studies. “Horse Girl” appears to be no different, following Brie as the eponymous equine-obsessed gal as she embarks on a life-changing journey. But don’t expect the film to offer up the usual “weird gal comes of age kind of late but...

Ten years have passed since America’s answer to Shaun of the Dead blew up the scene with the gun-toting stately named zom-com Zombieland. Its charming cast and less charming characters gave us the memorable delivery of enjoyable quips with its version of the “everyman” zomb-pocalypse story. Ten years later, after Warm Bodies, Cooties, Life After Beth, and Anna and the Apocalypse, we have been forced to ask, do we need a sequel to Zombieland?
Probably not.
Though it didn’t strike while the iron was hot, nor did it wait long enough to capitalize on nostalgia, Zombieland: Double Tap is here, and you know what? It’s great.
Ten years or so after the events of the first film, Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Little Rock (Abigail Breslin), Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), and Wichita (Emma Stone) are holed up in the White House living their quiet post-apocalyptic lives, until a panicked Wichita,...

In honor of Zombieland: Double Tap, we rank all the movies that mixed yuks with human chunks in the zombie comedy subgenre.
For those old enough to remember a time before The Walking Dead premiered on AMC, it’s strange to admit we’ve reached a zombie saturation point. Believe it or not, there was a moment where you were not inundated with zombie movies, zombie TV shows, zombie video games, and zombie memes. Rather the undead were a cult novelty that allowed indie filmmakers to speak truth to power… via allegories involving lots of brain-munching and disembowelment. What could be better?
Now it’s hard to take a single step in the pop culture landscape without landing on a reanimated corpse with a belly full gray matter—not that this should be treated as the end of the world. Indeed, as you’ll see in many of the movies below,...

No movie monster has bounced back more heartily than Chucky. The string of outlandish sequels released since 1988’s “Child’s Play” have found a half-dozen ways for the possessed doll to return for more evil pursuits. The new “Child’s Play” reboot finds one more, with a bigger budget and more audacious satire, but rarely has a movie begged to shed the baggage of its past more than this one. Rather than paying tribute to the original concept, director Lars Klevberg and screenwriter Tyler Burton Smith scribble over Don Mancini’s franchise by turning Chucky into a robot menace — think Hal 9000 with a knife — which raises the question of why they needed to mess with a series that has maintained its own zany rhythms for 30 years.

We look at the eclectic career of one of Hollywood's most beloved character actors, John C. Reilly.
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
As an actor, John C. Reilly is exceptionally difficult to pin down. The Academy Award-nominated actor has worked with filmmakers ranging from Paul Thomas Anderson to Judd Apatow. Currently in awards contention again for his turn as Oliver Hardy in Stan & Ollie, he’s always been brilliant at both comedic and dramatic roles.
Going at least as far back as Will Ferrell and Jack Black’s "A Comedian At The Oscars" number at the 2007 Academy Awards, Reilly’s formidable range has long been celebrated. How do we know that real actors can do both comedy and drama? John C. Reilly, that’s how. After all, he “chose to be in both Boogie and Talladega Nights!”
