When a film is looking to maximize its box office, there are numerous factors to consider. Some films rely on star power to draw audiences. Others attach themselves to recognizable properties, hoping familiar titles and characters will bring audiences back. Then there's the film's MPA (Motion Picture Association) rating. In 2018, the organization formerly known as the Motion Picture Association of America released a report noting that over half of all films were rated R, the most-adult, most-restrictive rating. Accordingly, in 2022, Axios reported that R-rated films were drawing a smaller portion of box office revenue than ever.
"If the greatest chance of box office success is having a PG-13 rating, or not having an R-rating, then that's where the industry really had to go," media analyst Paul Dergarabedian told the outlet. Still, he noted, there is often an audience for edgier fare, especially edgy genre fare. "Some of the best movies...

Blumhouse is the premiere destination for horror in Hollywood. From homegrown franchises such as "The Purge" to reviving classics like "Halloween," they hit it out of the park time and time again, with few misses in between. Because they also tend to keep budgets low, even their misses tend not to be disastrous. That brings us to "Imaginary," the latest Blumhouse horror film that is undoubtedly aiming to become their next franchise. It is not to be confused with "If," the family-friendly imaginary friends movie starring Ryan Reynolds. So, can this scary teddy bear flick deliver the goods at the box office? Or will this be a more middling result?
Though Universal almost always distributes Blumhouse's theatrical features, Lionsgate is handling this one, which hails from director Jeff Wadlow ("Truth or Dare"). It, at present, appears to have a solid chance at becoming another winner for the studio when it opens next weekend,...

The sequel to Five Nights At Freddy’s will reportedly shoot next spring and release next Halloween. More on the film here.
Figuring how to get under 25s into a cinema these days seems to be a constant preoccupation for studio executives. One studio that seems to manage pretty well in this area is Blumhouse and director Emma Tammi.
The horror outfit managed to get M3GAN to go viral back in January of this year as it steamed to a very impressive box office haul of $180m (despite costing just $12m to make).
Then, in October the production company managed to top that, galvanising the under-25s again to get out and see Five Nights at Freddy’s (a film we called ‘toothless’ in our review) in droves. That film (based on a popular horror video game) went on to earn $290m from a similar low production budget as M3GAN, so it...

This past January, Blumhouse had a big hit with “M3GAN,” their PG-13 thriller about a murderous A.I. doll. But moviegoers must wait until January 2025 for “M3GAN 2.0,” so what will tide them over at the start of 2024? How about “T.I.M.,” a UK sci-fi thriller that’s obviously cribbing from the “M3GAN” playbook?

It was a very crowded holiday weekend at the box office, with Disney's "Wish" and director Ridley Scott's "Napoleon" taking the lion's share of attention, while Lionsgate's "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" ended up topping the charts for a second weekend in a row in a surprise upset. While all of that was going on, Blumhouse's smash horror hit "Five Nights at Freddy's" quietly became the studio's biggest hit ever. Yes, as hard as it may be to believe, the video game adaptation now stands alone as the biggest of big hits from a studio that has delivered a great many hits over the last decade.

The “Black Phone” is ringing again.
Universal and Blumhouse have announced a sequel to the 2022 horror film, “The Black Phone,” set for June 27, 2025. The companies say “The Black Phone 2” is the “launch of a sinister new franchise.”
The original movie starred Ethan Hawke, as a child abductor and murderer called the Grabber, and Mason Thames, a 13-year-old boy named Finney who crosses the killer’s path. The Grabber locks Finney in a soundproof basement, where nobody can hear him or come to his rescue. The only item is the basement is a disconnected telephone that begins ringing. When Finney answers it, he realizes he’s able to communicate with the spirits of the Grabber’s deceased victims. The kids’ ghosts teach Finney how to survive and fight back, and he’s able to escape the Grabber’s clutches in the end.

Due to the recently resolved writers strike and the ongoing Screen Actors Guild strike, Chucky season 3 (read our review Here) has had to be split in half because not all of the episodes have been filmed yet. The first half of the season just wrapped up, with episodes airing on Syfy and USA Network before streaming on the Peacock streaming service. The second half of the season is expected to air sometime in 2024. In our recent interview with Don Mancini (you can watch it in the video embedded above), the Chucky creator said he has ideas for season 4, which isn’t yet a sure thing, and dreams of making a Chucky vs. Freddy crossover movie. But during an interview with Variety, Mancini seemed to hint that another crossover is possible. Some time down the line, we might see Chucky face off with M3GAN!

Deadline reports that Sony Pictures has come out the winner in a bidding war over the rights to bring an adaptation of Jack Follman’s 29-page short story It’s Over to the screen, forking over an amount somewhere in the mid mid- to high-six-figure range to acquire the project. One reason why It’s Over was so appealing to studios is the fact that it has an experienced genre writer attached to handle the screenplay adaptation: Akela Cooper, whose credits include Hell Fest, Malignant, M3GAN, The Nun II, and the upcoming sequel M3GAN 2.0. Cooper is also co-executive producer of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
It’s Over hit the marketplace last Wednesday, the same day the writers strike finally ended after nearly five months. According to Deadline, “the town responded quickly”.

Exclusive: The first splashy material sale coming after the end of the writer’s strike has an appropriate title.
Sony Pictures won a spirited weekend bidding battle for the Jack Follman short story It’s Over. The deal landed in the mid- to high-six-figure range, and it comes with Akela Cooper set to write the script. Her latest scripted release is the hit The Nun II, and she has made a habit of scripting genre hits from M3GAN to Malignant and Hell Fest. She’s scripted the sequel M3GAN 2.0, and in TV is co-executive producer of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
The film will be produced by Roy Lee’s Vertigo Entertainment alongside Scott Glassgold’s Ground Control. Verve held the auction with the bidders over the weekend.

One of the biggest horror hits in recent memory (and one of the biggest original hits of any kind for that matter) was "M3GAN." Produced by modern horror master James Wan and directed by Gerard Johnstone ("Housebound"), the film about an AI caregiver gone wrong captivated audiences in 2023, becoming the year's first bonafide blockbuster hit. Naturally, that means a sequel is on the way. Get ready for "M3GAN 2.0."
Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions were quick to give the green light to a follow-up after the first movie had a massive opening weekend at the box office en route to a $181 million worldwide total. Not bad for a movie made with a mere $12 million budget. As is almost always the case in horror, a franchise has now been born. To say the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” video game franchise is a hit would be a great understatement. Over the course of nine video games, the franchise has grown to become one of the biggest in the industry and has accumulated a ton of fans who go out and buy all the toys, tie-in novels, and various other merchandise. It was only a matter of time before a film was made, and that’s exactly what Blumhouse is doing.

Back in January, it was announced that M3GAN collaborators Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions, and James Wan’s production company Atomic Monster are aiming to replicate the January theatrical success they had with that movie by setting a January 2024 release date for their supernatural thriller Night Swim. At the time, it was said that Night Swim would reach theatres on January 19th. But now Deadline reports that the release date has been moved forward two weeks, to January 5th. Genre fans will be able to check out Night Swim on the first weekend of the year.
And then in January 2025, Universal, Blumhouse, and Atomic Monster will be bringing us M3GAN 2.0.
Bryce McGuire is writing and directing Night Swim, which is based on a short film he made with Rod Blackhurst back in 2014. The feature version of the story is built around the hidden source of terror found in an iconic backyard swimming pool.

The sci-fi thriller M3GAN (read our review Here) was cut down and had some moments reshot so it could achieve a PG-13 rating for its theatrical release, but the unrated cut of the movie has since been given a digital, Blu-ray, and DVD release (order a copy Here)… and during an interview with USA Today, star Allison Williams revealed there’s a certain unrated moment that makes her sick to her stomach.
Williams said, “The unrated version is a lot of fun, if you have the stomach for it.” When asked if there was a specific scene that makes her squirm, she replied, “Oh, my God. It should be when a child perishes, but at one point, someone’s face loses a fight with a pressure washer and it starts to peel off. Every bit as outrageously entertaining as horror fans would expect from Housebound director Gerard Johnstone, Malignant writer Akela Cooper, and producers James Wan and Jason Blum, M3GAN danced into theaters the first week of January.
With a persuasive marketing campaign led by a buzzy trailer and a strong social media presence, the film performed beyond expectations, grossing $173.4 million worldwide on a $12 million budget. A sequel, M3GAN 2.0, was swiftly put into development for a January 2025 release.
Until then, viewers can now enjoy both the theatrical and unrated cuts of M3GAN on Blu-ray. The release also carries three making-of featurettes: “New Vision of Horror,” “Bringing Life to M3GAN,” and “Getting Hacked.” Despite running a scant 14 minutes in total, they pack in soundbites from a wide array of cast and crew members.

One of the surprise breakout hits of the year was the fun horror flick M3GAN, which puts a modern twist on a Child’s Play-esque concept with the doll having AI. Promotion of the movie went viral thanks in part to an eerie sequence of the M3GAN doll doing a TikTok dance down a hallway in an intimidating fashion. Not only did the movie score as a big hit for a modest-budgeted studio film, collecting $173.5 million at the box office, but there is now a sequel in development from the film’s director, Gerard Johnstone, that will be titled M3GAN 2.0.
Johnstone was gracious enough to sit with us for an interview, which will be dropping soon. However, here are some good tidbits he’s revealed to us to whet your appetite until then.

M3GAN is proving all dolls go to heaven.
The eponymous star of Blumhouse’s “M3GAN” leads a new Marc Jacobs Heavn campaign, shot by photographer Harley Weir. The collection is in collaboration with band Deftones and streetwear brand Stray Rats. M3GAN rocks a Deftones’ God Help Me Up zip hoodie in the ad, overseen by Creative Director Ava Nirui.
The brand shared the photos on Instagram with the caption, “M3GAN in heaven.”
And M3GAN isn’t the only viral celebrity featured in the campaign: Tara Reid, Michael Imperioli, and Sandy Liang broke the Internet after being posed together on a couch. Marc Jacobs also re-released 2000s Stam bag, with Paris Hilton, Selma Blair, Ashanti, Ashlee Simpson, and Jessica Stam sporting the handbag earlier this year.

About two months ago, and only twelve days after the sci-fi thriller M3GAN (read our review Here) reached theatres, it was announced that the sequel M3GAN 2.0 will be getting a January 17, 2025 theatrical release. Now ComicBook.com has caught up with director Gerard Johnstone to get a status update on the sequel – and during their talk, Johnstone said he’s excited to try to replicate the success of the first film.
Johnstone told ComicBook.com, “All I can say is that I’m here in L.A. and been thinking about it, working on it, and I’m just catching up with them this week to talk about it and do a debrief. It’s really important to do a debrief on the first movie, like a post-game analysis, and look at what worked and how we can do it again. I mean, Jesus Christ, it’s difficult to replicate the success.

“M3GAN” was one of the box office surprises of the new year, surpassing expectations and opening to a strong $30 million weekend last month.
The Universal flick, a co-production between James Wan’s Atomic Monster Productions and Blumhouse, is now available to stream on Peacock.
There are two versions available: the theatrical PG-13 version and a new unrated cut. We watched them side-by-side for comparison.
Is the “M3GAN” Unrated Cut Longer?
The unrated cut of “M3GAN” is actually shorter than the theatrical version, but not by much.
The theatrical version runs 1:41:56 while the uncut version clocks in at 1:41:50.
For all intents and purposes they are the same film with no major plot changes or additions.

If you thought the PG-13 version of "M3GAN" was mouthy, you might want to cover your ears for the unrated cut, now available on Peacock. Shortly after the surprisingly touching horror comedy hit theaters, director Gerard Johnstone and screenwriter Akela Cooper both made it known that the original script was gorier than what was shown in theaters, and teased the possibility of an unrated cut as much of the original gore was already filmed but edited out for a PG-13 release. Luckily, Blumhouse and Universal Pictures made the brilliant decision to release the gorier cut of "M3GAN" on Peacock, which is now available to stream.
There are some definite differences between the two films, some more noticeable than others, and may help make your decision whether to go with the theatrical cut or the new, unrated release. Obvious spoilers ahead, but there are the all of differences between the two versions of "M3GAN.

Never one to hesitate striking while the iron is hot, Blumhouse has already announced a sequel, aptly titled "M3GAN 2.0," is in the works for a 2025 release date. Allison Williams and Violet McGraw will reprise their respective roles as M3GAN's creator Gemma and her niece Cady, having survived the rhythmic murder bot's initial reign of terror with a little help from their (robotic) friend, Bruce. The world wasn’t ready for M3GAN – the killer doll whose comedy-tinged horror film blasted into the box office and made a major splash with cinemagoers. With its tongue-in-cheek tone and instant-hit new horror star, M3GAN – devised by James Wan by Blumhouse, and the head of the studio is ready to assure fans that there’s plenty more in the tank for fresh M3GAN mischief.
“James Wan is one of the most creative, inventive people I know,” Jason Blum, confirming that ideas are already flying for M3GAN 2.0. “He’s an idea machine, and as we were winding up the movie he had about seven different ideas of what the sequel could be.” While the end of M3GAN –Spoiler Warning – saw the initial doll bite the dust, it was strongly suggested that she had (in true AI style) uploaded herself to the world wide web. How she chooses to wreak...

Exclusive: Lionsgate is in final negotiations to acquire worldwide rights to Imaginary, a new Blumhouse thriller to be directed by Jeff Wadlow (The Curse of Bridge Hollow).
The studios will co-finance the project, with Lionsgate to present it to buyers at this month’s European Film Market. Pic is the second to team the companies following the Blum-produced Sinister for Summit Entertainment/Lionsgate released in 2012.
In Imaginary, a young woman returns to her childhood home only to discover that the imaginary friend she left behind is very real and very unhappy she left. Sources tell us that the plan is for the project, currently being cast, to go into production this spring. Wadlow, Greg Erb, Jason Oremland and Bryce McGuire wrote the script. Producers are Blumhouse’s Jason Blum and Wadlow.

Weeks after word dropped that Marvel movies were coming back to China, multiple sources are reporting that DC Studios’ “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” will receive a theatrical release in what is still the biggest overseas marketplace.
Opening just under four years after its well-reviewed and well-received predecessor, the David F. Sandberg-directed action fantasy again stars Zachery Levi as the “grown-up” superhero alter ego of Asher Angel’s Billy Batson, a young foster kid who is gifted powers from a wizard. “Shazam!” earned 139 million domestically and 366 million worldwide on a 90 million budget, although only 43 million of that came from China.
Its arrival in China follows news that Marvel’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” will play in China early this month — long after its mid-November global launch — and that “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” will get a Chinese release alongside its Feb. 17 domestic opening.

Since “The Drew Barrymore Show” premiered in 2020, the talk show hosted by the beloved star of “Santa Clarita Diet” and “E.T.” has attracted headlines for dozens of bizarre, often borderline absurdist segments — such as the time Barrymore interviewed the cast of “Dear Evan Hansen” while (somewhat inexplicably) in character as Josie Geller, the lead of her 1999 romantic comedy “Never Been Kissed.” Now, that interview has received an unofficial followup with Wednesday’s show, where Barrymore invited Allison Williams into the studio by dressing as the main character from the “Girls” star’s most recent film, the horror hit “M3gan.”
In “M3gan,” Williams plays a roboticist and toy inventor who develops a lifelike robot doll to take care of her orphaned niece, only for her creation to go off her intended programming with tragic consequences. For the recent Oscar nominee announcer’s guest spot on the show Barrymore surprises the actor...

Allison Williams didn’t know she would be speaking with M3GAN when she arrived at “The Drew Barrymore Show”. In a clip from Wednesday’s episode, the film’s star and executive producer is surprised to see Barrymore dressed as the film’s spooky AI doll.
In the clip, Barrymore is dressed in the full M3GAN costume, rocking the blonde wig, piercing blue eyes and pussy bow blouse and skirt combo. Williams, who plays Gemma, the scientist who created M3GAN, is stunned as Barrymore doesn’t break character as she does the interview.
Williams puts the host to the true test, as she asks her if she can run on all fours. Accepting the challenge, Barrymore flawlessly executes the doll’s creepy run to the delight of Williams. Things are perfect until Williams finds a glitch in Barrymore’s blue contacts.
