Triple bill 2
TheLittleSongbird28 April 2023
There are three DePatie-Freleng Enterprises cartoons making up this second triple bill of 'The Pink Panther Show'. First is the thirty second Pink Panther cartoon 'Pinto Pink'. Second is the sixteenth The Inspector cartoon 'Le Pig-Al Patrol'. Third and lastly is the twenty ninth Pink Panther cartoon 'In the Pink'. It is hard to not expect too much from any triple bill that contains cartoons from two of the best DePatie-Freleng Enterprises theatrical series (Ant and the Aardvark is up there too).

'Pinto Pink'/'Le Pig-Al Patrol'/'In the Pink' is another very good triple bill and a triple bill where all three cartoons are good. Not everything works in the weakest 'In the Pink', but most things work really well indeed, and the other two are very, very good. Especially 'Le Pig-Al Patrol', after a triple bill containing one of the weaker The Inspector cartoons it was great to have one that had one that was closer to being one of the better ones. So despite neither of the three cartoons being classics (unlike the previous triple bill), because none disappointed really this is the better triple bill.

1967's 'Pinto Pink' (8/10)- Not perfect, with it being on the predictable side (especially the "done to death already in animation", having been seen many times in the Roadrunner/Wile E Coyote cartoons, falling down the cliff gag) and it drags occasionally.

It is beautifully animated and scored (the theme tune has not aged a jot) however, is very funny and colourful and the ever cool and naturally funny and likeable Pink contrasts beautifully with the hilariously sly horse.

1967's 'Le Pig-Al Patrol' (8/10)- Maybe it is a little formulaic and occasionally could have been tighter in pace.

The Inspector is such a great lead character, with great witty comic timing, while Pig-Al is one of the series' better, most formidable and most entertaining adversaries. To the extent that one doesn't miss Deux Deux too badly, which is not always the case when he is absent. Loved the chemistry between the two characters, and also the witty and ironic verbal humour, the air and cab door gag (the single funniest moment of the triple bill) and Pat Harrington's voice work.

1967's 'In the Pink' (7/10)- Once again, on the formulaic side and could have had a little more energy. The shadowboxing jokes also come over as forced and are likely to go over the heads of younger viewers.

Once again though, the animation and music are spot on as is the characterisation of Pink. Most of the gags do work, with the boxing ball gag being amusingly absurd in a very fun way, and much of the pacing is brisk.

Concluding, very good. 8/10.
