In a rather surprising turn of events, after Cannes skipped on premiering Emmanuelle––Audrey Diwan’s follow-up to her Golden Lion-winning Happening––the film won’t be at Venice, Telluride, or TIFF either as the 72nd San Sebastian Festival announced it will world premiere as their opening night film on September 20. Starring Noémie Merlant, Naomi Watts, Jamie Campbell Bower, and Will Sharpe, see the full announcement below along with a new still.
The French production Emmanuelle directed by Audrey Diwan will open the 72nd San Sebastian Festival in competition. The feature film will be screened as a world premiere on 20 September and will be attended by its director and leading cast.
Diwan, winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival with Happening / L’événement in 2021, co-wrote the screenplay with fellow filmmaker Rebecca Zlotowski. The film follows the steps of a woman in search of a lost pleasure, whose...

Morgan Wallen has apologized for his arrest in connection with a chair-throwing incident from the roof of a Nashville bar.
On April 7, the 30-year-old country star was arrested on three felony charges, according to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.
Wallen addressed his arrest today in a statement posted to his X account.
“I didn’t feel right publicly checking in until I made amends with some folks. I’ve touched base with Nashville law enforcement, my family, and the good people at Chief’s. I’m not proud of my behavior, and I accept responsibility,” he wrote. “I have the utmost respect for the officers working every day to keep us all safe. Regarding my tour, there will be no change.”
The singer’s arrest came days after he kicked off the 2024 leg of his “One Night at a Time World Tour” earlier this month. He is set to renew it on Saturday in Oxford,...

US BritBox recently debuted the second season of Jimmy McGovern‘s anthology prison drama Time, set in a women’s facility. The new story features three women facing punishment for various offenses with a focus on how the British prison system is set up to fail the women it is supposed to reform.
Viewers throughout three episodes follow the stories of Orla (Jodie Whittaker), a single mom who is suddenly thrown into prison for a minor offense, Abby (Tamara Lawrence) who is serving a life sentence for murder, and Kelsey (Bella Ramsey) who is charged with drug trafficking while facing addiction and pregnancy.
Den of Geek spoke to Jodie Whittaker about how Orla’s struggles differ wildly from the trials of a Time Lord and about the Doctor Who moment of which she feels proudest.

In ancient times, the Etruscan civilization built elaborate underground tombs not to please human eyes but those of the spirit world. A similar spirit of feeling unbound from the pressures of the present-day animates Italian filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher’s La Chimera, a 1980s-set adventure following a roving group of tomb raiders who attempt to excavate and pillage these secret sanctuaries. The director has always depicted time as layered rather than strictly linear. The present exists not ahead the past but on top of it, and the moments she depicts will one day be history for another era. This vision lends the sensation that she, like the ancient culture she depicts, is communicating with something beyond our perception.
Rohrwacher finds a perfect partner in her search for the sublime with Josh O’Connor. The English actor provides a human incarnation of the director’s restless attempt to collapse the contradictions of time.

Most people have a pet peeve, but for powerhouse actress Regina King, her latest project is a shot at trying to fix hers. And it’s a solution so necessary it’s been almost 15 years in the making.
Premiering March 22 on Netflix, the new biopic Shirley stars King as the indomitable Shirley Chisholm, the Brooklyn politician who made history in 1972 for being the first Black woman to run for president of the United States. While King plays the titular role, she also helped develop the film with her sister, Reina Chisholm,...

Elvis Presley‘s “One Night” played into the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll‘s image as a sex symbol. Ironically, it was a rewrite of a song about sexual shame. Here’s a look at what a songwriter thought when Elvis changed his track.
The 1st version of Elvis Presley’s ‘One Night’ was inspired by a schoolteacher’s desires
Numerous Elvis hits were originally by other artists. The first singer to record “One Night” was rhythm and blues singer Smiley Lewis. The tune was penned by Dave Bartholomew, who also wrote Chuck Berry’s “My Ding-a-Ling.”
During a 1985 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Bartholomew discussed the inspiration behind “One Night.” “There was a very nice young lady who lived in Mobile, Alabama, a schoolteacher,” he recalled. “I used to go with her sister.
“At dinner one night, she mentioned — out of a clear blue sky — she had only...

Glenn Danzig has always been inspired by classic rock and he took that to a new level by recording an entire album of Elvis Presley songs. One of the tracks on the album was a rendition of Elvis’ “One Night,” which he had covered before. Notably, Elvis was not the first artist to record “One Night.” The tune’s writer revealed what he thought of the “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You” singer’s rendition.
Glenn Danzig covered Elvis Presley’s ‘One Night’ several times
Danzig first became famous through his punk band The Misfits. Since then, he’s also been part of the groups Samhain and Danzig. With the latter group, he released an Elvis cover album simply called Danzig Sings Elvis. The record includes a recording of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll‘s “One Night.”

Tom Petty wanted to learn more about Elvis Presley’s songs, but teen magazines weren’t giving him any help. He bought a book about the “All Shook Up” singer that changed his life. He also revealed the book impacted his relationship with The Beatles’ songs.
Tom Petty said receiving an Elvis Presley book was like getting a Christmas present
In the 2012 book Conversations With Tom Petty, the “Free Fallin'” star said he wanted to learn more about Elvis when he was young. He couldn’t find books about the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Many teen magazines focused on Elvis, but they included little information.
“I sent a buck to England for this book, The Elvis Presley Handbook, much to the ridicule of my family for wasting a dollar,” he said. “And it took months to come, but the day it came was like Christmas.” That’s an apt comparison,...

Tom Petty was an Elvis Presley fan even when he felt it wasn’t cool to be an Elvis Presley fan. However, Petty felt another classic rock act eclipsed the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll in 1964. Petty also said that Elvis’ output changed during that year. Regardless, Petty still named some of the tunes by the “All Shook Up” singer that he loved.
Tom Petty felt Elvis Presley’s songs took a nosedive
In the 2012 book Conversations With Tom Petty, Petty revealed he was an Elvis fan up to a point. “I was until ’64, and then Elvis was getting so s***** by then,” he said. “It had never been the music of my generation. I was an odd kid for even being interested in Elvis.
“So when The Beatles came, I lost interest in Elvis, because [The Beatles] were the music of my generation, and I was a huge record buff,” he recalled.

There has long been a debate about what the most beautiful word in the world is. For music fans, the coupling of “free” and “Justin Timberlake” ranks right up there.
The singer is giving a free concert in Memphis on Jan. 19. The Tennessee native will do a one-night-only performance at the Orpheum Theatre in the city.
The surprise concert was announced Friday on Timberlake’s social media accounts. No word on the purpose of the free show, but speculation suggests it’s to stir up interest in forthcoming new music.
Timberlake had a fairly quiet 2023, performing just twice publicly, including an Nsync reunion at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. He was also laying low for a time when Britney Spears’ memoir revealed embarrassing details of their prior relationship.
“Going home,” Timberlake captioned a set of Instagram photos announcing the show. The main image is a billboard with details on the “one night only” concert,...

At the end of 2021, a surprise contender zoomed toward a best picture nomination when Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car began to sweep critics groups’ awards across the country. The Japanese drama earned the prize for best film from critics in Boston, Los Angeles, New York and Seattle, besting then-frontrunners Dune and The Power of the Dog and eventual best picture winner Coda. Buoyed by critical acclaim, Drive My Car went the extra mile beyond the international feature category, which it won: It also earned Academy Award nominations for best picture, director and original screenplay, way outpacing any predictions made by prognosticators when the season had begun in earnest.
People often deride the Oscars for being about artsy films most moviegoers don’t see. But the fact remains that it’s the studio-backed movies with fat FYC budgets that typically garner Oscar nominations — making Drive My Car’s success all the more the outlier.

This article contains spoilers for Our Flag Means Death season 1.
The sitcom Our Flag Means Death has behaved in a very piratey way, quite frankly. When it burst onto the scene last year, it unexpectedly plundered fans’ hearts, leaving their new favorite ship – between Rhys Darby as Stede Bonnet and Taika Waititi as Blackbeard – wrecked, and left us stranded on a cliffhanger of a finale desperate for a second series.
Thankfully, the treasure that is season two of Our Flag Means Death is released on Max on Oct. 5, and it’s as adorable as ever, with a whole crew of new characters to fall in love with:
Let’s meet the new characters, and discover which returning cast members are back:

Tensions were high in the bathroom line during Morgan Wallen’s concert at Pittsburgh’s Pnc Park on Wednesday night, where an all-out brawl broke out and spilled into a porta-potty.
Based on the footage that surfaced online, it appears that the fight was set off after one woman accused another of cutting in line to use the toilet. After some shoving back and forth, one woman got the upper hand and pushed her opponent into a porta-potty that was just being vacated by an innocent bystander.
Reinforcements quickly showed up, with one woman in a blue romper and white cowboy boots coming in hot and ready to throw down. She pummeled one opponent with some overhand slaps after pulling her out of the porta-potty by her hair, and then returned to kick another woman and use the door as a weapon on her.

Madrid-based sales house Latido Films and indie distributor-producer #ConUnPack are joining forces to handle international distribution rights to Tribeca Festival’s hit “One Night with Adela,” the feature debut of Spanish writer-director Hugo Ruiz snagged Tribeca’s best new narrative director award.
An audacious revenge thriller, lensed using a single-shot technique, the film marries concepts of religion and sin with childhood trauma.
“One Night with Adela” toplines Laura Galán, the star of Carlota Pereda’s 2022 Sundance hit “Piggy,” a role that earned her a Goya prize for best new actress.
In “One Night,” Galán plays a disturbed street sweeper in Madrid, who savagely enacts retribution for an incident from her youth over the course of one night.
Although not everyone is to blame for her miserable life, a cocktail of drugs, sex, and deep-seated fury fuels her cruelty towards most who cross her path, culminating in a shocking scene.

The Jonas Brothers, which consist of Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas, took a group picture before performing on the first night of their Five Albums, One Night Tour at New York City’s Yankee Stadium.
They kicked off their concert on Saturday, with nearly 70 songs chosen from five of their albums.
“We’re out there playing 67 songs. It’s a gauntlet,” Kevin, who is the oldest of the three brothers, told The Today Show. “This is definitely by far the most ambitious thing we’ve ever tried to do.”
The musical trio revealed that the baseball venue was chosen for a sentimental reason.
Nick explained that they couldn’t afford to go to Yankee games as children but would get opportunities to attend because the Yankees donated to churches.
“We would sit way up in the nosebleeds, so it’s full circle to be back here playing a show,” Nick said.

No one could have predicted what it was like sitting in the middle of the Jonas Brothers’ second sold out night at Yankee Stadium. The trio of Nick, Joe and Kevin rose to stardom in the Aughts as Disney’s handsome, Christian answer to Hanson, but not even Disney could prepare for the grip the brothers had on teen culture between 2007 and 2010. They were all excellent songwriters who needed little aid in the studio, plus tabloid-baiting romantic menaces amongst their fellow teen superstar peers, Disney and otherwise.

There was a surprise guest at the Jonas Brothers Yankee Stadium concert Sunday night. Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon made an unexpected appearance, joining the Jonas Brothers onstage and leading the crowd in a sing-along version of The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside.”
Huge thanks to @JonasBrothers for giving me the surprise guest spot on ‘The Tour’ tour. And thank you to @yankeestadium for turning it into the world’s biggest karaoke party. This is one of those nights I will never forget,” the Tonight Show host wrote on X (fka Twitter), along with a video of the performance. You can watch it below.
It’s been quiet in the late-night world amid ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The AMPTP and WGA held their first day of bargaining Friday since the Writers Guild went on strike May 2. Negotiations will resume this week after the companies made a counterproposal to the guild’s proposals.

Lollapalooza 2023 is a wrap. During the festival’s fourth and final day, rain continued to soak Chicago’s Grant Park. Thankfully, by headlining time, the bad weather had subsided, but not before leaving plenty of puddles for festival attendees to navigate and slippery mud all around.
It wouldn’t have been a proper Lollapalooza without hometown rapper Chance the Rapper popping up at some point during the weekend. He did just that during Joey Bada$$’s set earlier on Sunday evening, performing “No Problem” and “The Highs & the Lows.”

[The following story contains spoilers for Secret Invasion’s series premiere, “Resurrection.”]
Secret Invasion star Kingsley Ben-Adir had already made a name for himself to fans of Netflix series like Peaky Blinders and The Oa, but his role as Malcolm X in Regina King’s One Night in Miami (2021) was when the British actor truly broke out within the industry at large. Just two weeks after the release of Miami, Ben-Adir received a call from Marvel Studios with a direct offer to play Gravik, the Skrull baddie of their six-part miniseries, Secret Invasion, starring Samuel L. Jackson.
Marvel brass tempted Ben-Adir with two scripted scenes, one of which involves Gravik throwing Jackson’s Nick Fury around a room. (There’s a bit of it in the trailer.) So the opportunity to work one on one with Jackson, as well as Ben Mendelsohn, instantly sold Ben-Adir.
“That [Nick Fury fight scene] was one of the scenes that I read before I accepted the job.

Ensconsed in Tribeca’s Midnight section, Spain’s “One Night With Adela” the feature debut of Hugo Ruiz, came pretty much from nowhere to walk off with the festival’s best new narrative director award, won in the past by Michelle Garza Cervera for “Huesera.”
Produced by Spain’s Muertos de Envidia Company and FTFCam, the film follows Adela, a deeply wounded and disturbed night sweeper that is hellbent on retaliating against those who she believes have wronged her.
Over the course of one night, we accompany Adela, slowly putting together the pieces of who she truly is. Shot on a variety of one shot sequences that find a style and aesthetic in the bleak night universe that Adela traverses, the film is driven by Laura Galán who proves once again – after Sundance hit “Piggy” (2022) – that she has the acting strength to carry an entire film by herself. #ConUnPack will...

Taika Waititi and Sterlin Harjo have a routine they’ve done at parties that kills. They perfected it at Sundance in the early 2000s, in a condo dance-off with two Navajo guys. “Taika would strike this Michael Jackson pose with his hand pointing in the air and unbutton the pearl button on his shirt,” says Harjo, the Seminole-Muskogee director with whom Waititi would go on to co-create the FX comedy series Reservation Dogs in 2019. “And I was the wind in his shirt.” The duo also delivered a full-throated karaoke version of Queen’s “Under Pressure,” for which they still get requests.
Before he became a global acting-writing-directing star with an Oscar and a Marvel résumé, Waititi, a Maori-Jewish filmmaker from New Zealand, found community in the U.S. among Native American filmmakers like Harjo. “One of the things we all connected on was our disdain for how we appear onscreen in white productions,...

Morgan Wallen left many fans disappointed on Sunday night when he canceled his performance in Oxford, Mississippi, at the last possible minute. It was to be the second of two nights at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and the fifth American date of his sold-out One Night at a Time Tour.
Numerous fans posted photos inside the stadium, where the crowd assembled and watched openers Ernest and Hardy perform their sets. Just before Wallen’s onstage time, a message was flashed on the screens at the side of the stage announcing that there would be no more music.

Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra were a sweet-looking couple at the red carpet premiere of the latter's new series "Citadel." The pair posed together for cute photos at the April 18 event in London. Chopra looked stunning in a glamorous red gown, and we bet Jonas, who kept an arm around her during photos, would agree.
In the globe-trotting thriller spy series from Prime Video, which premieres on April 28, Chopra stars alongside "Game of Thrones" actor Richard Madden. In a recent interview, Chopra explained that she flexed her action star muscles for the project, doing "almost 80 percent" of her own stunts. In a conversation with DNA India, published on April 18, she said, "I come from the background of doing action films. I have done action films in Bollywood as well. He’s got more than sand in his boots. Morgan Wallen spent time down under, thanks to his One Night at a Time tour. This country artist even participated in a uniquely Australian tradition — for the second time. Here’s what the “One Thing at a Time” singer said about his first “shoey.”
