Not a bad movie. Not a good movie, but not a bad movie.
Short and sweet, no spoilers.

Actually...I felt it was between 4 and 5 but rounded up.

This is a very average independent, low budget film. The overall bent of the characters being picked off one by one is not new, but the plot itself is a new take on an old trope. Thankfully, the acting is average to slightly above, so at least it's (a little) "believable." We get no subtext or history on the characters, so what you see is what you get, which is very little so there is no real development or attachment to anyone except what is formed during the movie. I would compare the group of geohunters to their own "Breakfast Club," since each one is a cliché. That's not a bad thing, only an observation.

The direction, cinematography, script...all average to above average. There are some good moments in the cinematography, as the snowy (and legitimately cold) landscape offers some great opportunities. The story and script are the worst offenders, as the story content is at times sickeningly cliche (eg "love" interests, "speeches")

Re: parental content:
  • no sex or nudity
  • very little profanity. It's there but not gratuitous
  • the directors include violence that might otherwise be gory but for the relatively bad CGI fx. There are a couple of practical fx scenes, but for the most part the blood and "gore" are all digital...and not very well done "digital" at that
  • I suppose some scenes could be considered intense, but for the most part the intensity comes with the killings.

Overall, it's a very "meh" film. I don't regret watching it, but I wished it had been more. Small budgets don't mean a movie is damned from fx but this could have been a really fun, bloody, gory slasher had there been a little cash behind it. Don't go out of your way to watch this, but if you find it on late at night, it will kill the time.

It should be noted...it's a bit slow. And by slow, I mean there are multiple areas where the pace lags behind what the viewer wishes.

Hated the end.

Not a bad movie
arizonasundevil-254247 February 2021
Gave it a 6 because CG was bad and many flaws that should have been edited. Acting was good and so was the story.

And then there were two

Your typical cut-off-from-the-world, getting-hunted-and-picked-off-one-by-one horror. Still, the scenery and dialogue are great, the acting... well, it's acceptable. The story itself makes sense in the end, which is great; most horrors leave you hanging or give you the finger. It was a fun watch.

it got SOME things right!!!

Movie set in freezing nowhere. Check. Characters that are actually DRESSED FOR THE WEATHER! HATS,GLOVES, COATS!!!!! This stopped that ridiculousness in every sub zero wilderness movie where some chick whines that she is freezing, mainly because she's dressed like she's hitting the town in tampa bay on a july evening, dedpite being in a place with literal snow on the ground. So kudos to the filmakers for that, because it truly looked cold as heck! As for this story?!?!? Meh. I sided with the killer, ESPECIALLY after the first scene and the tale he told, and was hoping he would take them all out, because they were annoying as all get out. The one lady had really nice curly hair. Acting was decent, killer had excellent reasoning, but really this movie just moved woodenly and bizarrely. Decent scenery, acting, and hell yeah i included stars for tbose warm clothes, because i have seen that stupidity play out in so many other movies, but ultimately this is just a meh movie.

Unsatisfying
raleeboston2 July 2020
If you can bear the early caricature introductions, poor plot development and lack of real suspense, you might enjoy the wintry scene and last until the final few minutes where some action finally breaks the tedium.

Needlessly harsh and without a purpose

Warning: Spoilers
I'll start by saying that most of the acting is decent, and I like horror set in a wintery environment. And there was a lesbian couple with one of them almost being non-binary, so that was nice.

But that's all I have to say in a positive regard.

Most of the characters are just stereotypes, and it's quite exhausting quickly; especially the vlogger character, Braddik, who is just SUCH a twit and gets annoying really quickly. That's the point, but he's still insufferable.

All of the deaths were brutal, but the over-the-top gory demise of Lindsay while her girlfriend watched on and cried was just too much. If you're in the LGBT+ Community, you'll probably be really upset by this scene, as neither of the two characters are shown to be unlikeable in any way.

Then there's the killers themselves, who are really boring and their motivations are unclear. It's implied that they might be indigenous, but if that's the case then it really paints them in a poor light.

The CGI is downright dreadful and the practical effects are alright, I guess. And the music is super grating on the ears, especially the intro song.

Not a good movie. Not fun, not clever, not thrilling. There's just no point to it.

Formulaic Horror Film
jjturley26 February 2017
Countless horror films deal with young people trapped in a remote place, and getting killed off one by one. Dead of Winter is yet another example...

The story starts out simple enough. Recently paroled "John Garber" (played by Damon Runyon) lives in snowy Colorado. He is unemployed and desperately needs a job. His sister suggests he work as a bus driver for a local company that sponsors treasure hunts. John agrees to do it.

These treasure hunting events are specifically called "Geocache Treasure Hunts." It is similar to looking for Easter Eggs. Strange clues will indicate where to find them. There is a prize of $25,000 for the person who finishes first.

John takes a busload of treasure hunters on a drive up to the mountain. During the several-hour drive, we meet different characters, all hoping to win the prize money. The character of "Bradik" (played very well by James Wallis) is particularly obnoxious, annoying people as well as making moves on an open lesbian couple.

The bus finally parks. The wintry destination is truly breathtaking, as well as freezing and desolate. The treasure hunters then break into small groups, and set out to search for clues.

Very soon, it is apparent that things are not as planned. People are starting to die, and then they unexpectedly lose the bus! The are stranded far away from civilization, have no phone signals, and must find shelter. Who wants them dead? It is unclear if any of them will survive.

I enjoyed watching this movie though I have seen variations of it many times before. For a relatively low-budget film, they did a great job. The acting was convincing enough as well.

This film is entirely Canadian-made, location as well as actors. Interesting that they set the story in Colorado (USA.)

This seems Canadian, but ok, not terrible
bramstayer28 August 2022
THAT'S NOT a bad thing these days but its odd not to just set it there. So obviously Canadian...anyways yeah.

The Geo Cache thing is so 2005! & not too funny. The usual types likethe older guy seems way too cool about sudden decapitations and booby traps. Thats not a spoiler its in the first 20 min lotsa dumb jokes when they should kinda strategizing what the best way outta this melting forest trek. Its boilerplate "in the forest horror" film design, just add snow avoid too many accents & call it Colorado.volume goes from 3 to 50 alot. No subtitles either!

However, stunts were a bit on the 'bloodbath' level. ( not quite torure porn like Saw- same characters tho!) Still good to nod off to on a rainy afternoon. I'm finding it harder to locate new films on my new Prime app so that is my excuse. Oh & beware a character whose going pee..bad things happen.

Could've been great
jay2004a3 June 2019
Started off great minus the weird and annoying theme song. Some decent acting and great scenery.

The treasure hunt makes for an interesting storyline though. Worth watching if not much on.

Unpleasant
bitbucketchip4 August 2021
An extremely improbable assemblage of obnoxious d-bags head out into the snow for a scavenger hunt. Who will win?

Who cares.

Not the director, because the plot is quickly abandoned once the bodies start stacking up. In short order essentially nameless cast members are decapitated, ripped limb from limb, pincushioned with arrows, and so on. The big mystery is: who is responsible for the murders?

Who cares.

It turns out the director doesn't care about the mystery either, because the killer is shown firing the cross bolt halfway through the film. So much for the mystery. Half the movie to go and we have no plot and no mystery. Oops.

Poor acting, though that is more due to the "and then" nature of the script than a lack of effort from the cast. And then the bus blows up, and then a girl has her arms tipped off, and then a guy is decapitated, and then... No story, no plot, no rising action. Just a series of unconnected scenes. And then a guy is shot with arrows, and then...

The music is laughably bad. The less said about it the better.

On the plus side the scenery is pleasant and the threatened found footage video cam filming from the beginning was mercifully quickly forgotten.

Four stars.

I liked this movie! It had great potential but not perfect.
coraschell-1875227 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Acting is impeccable, loved all the plot twists, definitely average gruesome deaths, good storyline! Mainly predictable like most horror movies but it took me by surprise with the deaths, the hunt made it even more entertaining and the killers were very unpredictable! This movie kept me on my toes through out most of this film. It definitely could have been better. I have seen plenty of films like this before, I do wish this movie wasn't as predictable as it was. The payoff for the rest of the film didn't seem to indulging but the film it's self is worth it to me. It is very interesting and fun to watch! The plot twists and surprises were well payed off by the end of the film.
