Very weak launch to an unsuccessful series

SISTERS represents Girlfriends Films' attempt to try something a little different, but has to be counted a failure. The lesbian label has scored huge hits with its long-running series like WOMEN SEEKING WOMEN, already at 120 volumes issued so far, and that comfortable "you know what you're going to get" format seems to work best.

Cover photo on the DVD depicts Monique Alexander with Jessie Andrews and Marie McCray as three sisters, but the ensuing drama is far, far from Chekhov. It's rather half-baked porn, okay once the licking, tribbing and fingering begin, but boring during the verbal exposition and dull banter preambles.

Real-life Monique is only slightly older than Marie, and 10 years senior to Jessie, but perhaps her botoxed lips and breast implants make her seem more like their momma. At any rate, her acting is excellent, bringing a bit of panache to the otherwise "let's get on with the sex" approach. It's worth noting that the 3 stars collectively have an amazing 550 features to their credit per IMDb already.

Premise is that Marie returns home to see her estranged siblings, not being on good terms ever since their no-good mom left them. Monique is the eldest, still bitter about having had to raise her sisters as de facto head of the family, and quite conservative to boot.

Marie brings in tow her gal pal Chastity Lynn, perhaps the biggest name in the cast. During dinner, Chastity's playing footsie under the table with Jessie, so we know some heat is about to develop.

First sex scene, however, is a torrid exercise of Marie and Chastity, certainly what their fans paid for at the virtual box office. Chastity makes everyone breakfast next morning, and even Monique warms to her. The kids go off to a concert and festival starring German vocalist Katja Kassin, but that is not shown, this being a low-budget (read: likely 2-day shoot) lesbian porn video.

Monique is dressed to the nines, when they bring Katja back to the house with them, and the two older women hit it off. Katja sings a German song briefly a capella, but the X-rated superstar of anal sex fame doesn't have much of a singing voice, not that that fact would rule out vocal stardom nowadays.

The veterans' natural improvised patter is briefly diverting, and they have a strong sex scene. Credibility is thrown to the winds, as Monique's elaborate and colorful tattoos hardly conform to the conservative nature of this character's "first-time" lesbian experience, and her prowess in bed also belies that status.

Final two segments are devoted to showcasing some lesser-known talent, hailing from the fetish world. Cassandra Nix sports terrific puffy nipples, reminiscent of the great Kandi Barbour, and her deep tan contrasts nicely with partner Jessie Andrews in bed.

But the finale starring Zoey Foxx is a bummer. Perhaps a hit back in the tickle and saran wrap days, she is quite unimpressive as an actress, speaking in the speech impediment "like this, like that" style, physically not alluring, and basically just a random young thing coupling with Marie. She's been cast as Katja's manager, and seems too young for that assignment.

Anonymous director muffs the ending, as missing in action Monique turns up in Germany (they say, we don't get any establishing shots of course), writing home and narrating her letter in stilted fashion. She apologizes to her sisters for her uncaring attitude, but her loosening up and becoming humanized contradicts the fact, that just like mom, she's run out on them. This ill-advised finish feels hurried and has zero impact, other than making the video seem phony. I've seen one of the followup volumes in this series, and while better (and more abstract) it still doesn't live up to the promise of a family drama.
