In a world without gold, we might have been heroes

Warning: Spoilers
The best entry in the series after Assassin's Creed 2, Black Flag proves a game can overcome several flaws as long as it manages to be fun.

A high-budget pirate sandbox action/adventure where you can sail around the sea from Kingston to Nassau, board enemy ships during naval battles, roam crocodile-infested swamps, run parkour-style on the roofs of Havana, dig for buried treasures in small atolls... I mean, how can one not love a premise like that? It's an instant winner.

Characters are vivid, voice acting solid, dialogues written with surprising flair. History provided here is the usual "based on real events" baloney; pirates are romanticized into brave rebels. Whatever - don't play Assassin's Creed expecting reliable history lessons. Sadly, the modern-day Abstergo plot, the series' tiresome framing device, refuses to go away and die. What would you rather do in a game about pirates - take control of your ship in the middle of a storm or speak to your boss in a corporate office? Every time the game shifts to a modern-day sequence (thankfully, not often) it's like getting commercials in the middle of a blockbuster.

Black Flag has a few dubious design choices. Insta-failure stealth missions are grating; they would be less annoying if the stealth system was exceptionally well thought-out, but this isn't the case. Enemy AI has its issues: for example, sentinels are remarkably unaffected by the disappearance of their comrades. Combat is once again dominated by the stupidly overpowered counter attack; and, speaking of overpowered, special mention goes to berserk darts, which allow to complete many missions with absurd ease. Overall, you'd think stealth and combat would be more polished in a series about assassins.

Still, the game is better than the sum of its parts and highly enjoyable - in particular, its mix of naval and terrestrial exploration (journey to far away islands, visit jungles with jaguars and Mayan ruins...) is fantastic.

For another entertaining (but sadly underrated) sandbox in the same setting, try Pirates of the Caribbean (2003).

Who can't like this game??
lilguyollie7 March 2015
Whether or not you're a fan of Assassin's Creed, it doesn't matter. This game will satisfy both fans of the series and those who just want a damn good pirate game. Everyone wins. For those who wanted both of those things, your luck is well and truly in.

Black Flag is an ambitious game but has a truly great pay-off at the end. The sense of exploration and freedom found in this game isn't something that you would find in most other games. With the north part of the Caribbean as your world (including but not limited to places like Jamaica, Cuba and Barbados) you can sail as pirate captain Edward Kenway on your ship, the Jackdaw, through the open seas taking on British and Spanish ships to steal their cargo, hunting sea creatures and exploring underwater shipwrecks. There's just so much to do. The sense of progression in this game is really great too. In previous AC games there was often an issue of having too much money and not having anything to do with it. Well here you can use that money to upgrade your character as well as your bad-ass pirate ship. As the game progresses you'll be able to take on larger and larger vessels with bigger prizes and even take on the Legendary ships. The characters are mostly based on real historical figures of the period and all are interesting as well as well produced in every respect.

Issues with the game however are that combat is still to easy, stealth is not refined enough and regardless of being a fan of the franchise, the story really didn't do it enough for me. I honestly preferred the story in AC3.

I would recommend picking up this game. It's fun, well made and engrossing. Even if the story doesn't really float your boat, there's so much more to do in terms of side quests. I therefore give this game a 9 out of 10 and would argue that it was one of the top 5 games of 2013.

Thanks for reading this review I hope you found it helpful. If you enjoyed it please feel free to read my other reviews.

Excellent

Warning: Spoilers
It's not a common thing for me to review games, in fact this is the first, but Blackflag is excellent. I enjoy the Assasin's Creed games, the games with Ezio were the best but this one is the best of them all. I'm not keen on the newer AC games (Rogue, Unity, Syndicate, Origins and Odyssey)

Blackflag was the last game of Desmond Miles' ancestry which does make sense as the current generation playing AC probably don't know who Desmond Miles is, but it's good that they did it as it fleshes out the backstory of Assasins Creed III with Connor and Hatham set in America.

Personally I think the game would be still as amazing without the 'modern day' aspect, just a Caribbean pirates game (not to be confused with Pirates of the Caribbean) but at least this kept it inline with the previous games.

AC4 Brings New Life to the Franchise
balathehedgehog918 March 2014
Before this game, all previous Assassin's Creed games felt the same. It even made WatchMojo.com's top 10 most overrated games list due to Assassin's Creeds 1-3 all playing extremely similar. The latest installment, however, added a new feature that took up half the game. This feature, of course, is the Naval aspect. Fans got a taste of this in Assassin's Creed III, but it is nowhere near the level Of 4. Whether it's hunting sharks, collecting cargo, sailing to an island, seeking treasure or engaging in Naval Battles, sailing pirate ships in AC4 is an incredible and well polished gameplay mechanic. Aside from that, it also made the world feel more real, since you could almost all of the Caribbean sea. Not only is this a must have for any Assassin's Creed fan, but it's also a great game for new players to start, since the story no longer follows Desmond Miles.

The Greatest Assassin's Creed
pk123315 June 2020
While I have not completed every Assassin's Creed game, I have played portions of most (though I have not touched Origins or Odyssey). Black Flag is the greatest of them all. The Ezio trilogy may have the best story, but this has a fantastic balance of excellent gameplay and a decent story. If you are looking for the ultimate AC experience, go with Black Flag or Syndicate.

Just a Pirates Game
Jordiuly21 November 2021
AC Black Flag breaks a bit with the characteristic scheme of the Assassin's Creed saga, to become, a decent pirate game. It is an action game, with a fast pace that personally reminds me quite of AC Liberation in terms of combat simplicity, shallow plot, and story with many fronts so that there is hardly time for characters' introduction or to enjoy their murders. All this takes us far from the level reached by AC III, but it gives us a lot of gameplay in a completely unique environment: the seas. More than half of the game is spent sailing, and here, Ubisoft has done a wonderful job to avoid it from becoming monotonous and to fill the aspect of game with new missions and possibilities. I'm not going to say that I was passionate about crossing the waters and assaulting enemy ships, it is not what I expect when playing an Assassin's Creed game, but I must admit that they have managed to make it entertaining. All the mechanics of the game are very well developed, being the first Assassin's Creed divided into areas of lesser or greater difficulty to which you gain access as you progress through the game. The "role-playing" side that we usually find in Assassin's games has been quite reduced, mainly limiting itself to the improvement of the ship, which makes the game even faster and less immersive. However, the game is long, and if you want to entertain yourself by collecting all the different collectibles out there, you are going to need a lot of hours.

In any case, the bottom line is that this is a pirate game fitted into the Assassin's Creed universe. Desmond Miles disappears, and the entire "contemporary" side of the game is severely depleted, adding very little to the Abstergo vs. Assassins story, and still leaving many doors open.

Normally I don't pay much attention to the audio of a game, but in this case, there are two important points to note: on the one hand, the excellent soundtrack, as well as the pirate songs, which both manage to make sailing on the high seas much more pleasant. On the other hand, the voices that fill the streets and squares, as well as those of the main characters, leave much to be desired. Ubisoft usually paid a lot of attention to this aspect, but in Black Flag we will have to hear modern Spanish in the golden age of piracy, even with phrases too modern to fit in that historical context. The same is probably happening with Portuguese, as well as with Italian, a language that did not exist as such at the time and that is surprising to hear from time to time among pirates. English has been more careful developed and even the letters written at the time show a more archaic English.

Finally, the quality of the menus is quite limited, at the level of AC Liberation, when it was expected to be more polished and user-friendly.

In short, a very entertaining action game that, although it does not manage to contribute much to the Assassin's Creed universe, it is worth playing it and putting yourself in the shoes of the pirate Kenway.

Lots of busy work and extremely repetitive
amir-5016816 July 2022
I had high hopes for this game with all the praise it got. Unfortunately I am very disappointed. Most of the missions are either tail someone on land or on a boat. Naval combat is definitely better than in AC 3 but still very sluggish. The story is extremely uninteresting and the present story doesn't even deserve mentioning.

Upgrading health and your ship requires you to hunt animals or sink ships. This gets very boring very fast and harms the game.

The stealth sections are okay most of the time. But the naval mission are tedious.

Ubisoft should have just made a pirate game and let AC rest but I understand why they didn't.

Better than AC3 but not much.

The Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag review

Are ya ready kids! Aye aye Captain Kenway! Ow yeah. Well, as I went through this game there was no stopping my exploration needs. Every ten square meter island I saw and every shore with those badass flamingos flying around was an instant stop for my wave cruising ride called "The Jackdaw". This curiosity that I had for the map was fueled by the enormous work that went into the creation and detail of the sea and its little islands as well as the inland jungle. Previous games had big cities as their main location but now, as well as having a few of these; the creators have gifted you with a whole ocean for traversing. The movement and the character that the sea shows are beautiful as well as dangerous as this bastard throws you some nasty storms some times. Another added feature aside from the open world sea exploring were the diving sequences which are actually quite a few. I had some trouble with these as the mechanics aren't all that perfect and I kept going nose first into those damn sea urchins. But aside from the clumsiness (that is expected from any underwater levels) it manages to handle them with the awe of seeing the depth of the ocean, man! Goosebumps! Ship boarding and fort taking are some cool mechanics that the game also offers and they serve the fleshing out of the characters as well as random unscripted cinematic action sequences which make you feel like a badass. Speaking of cinematic sequences I loved the ones that Ubisoft created for us. Of course, they are scripted but nothing beats a pirate running across a swamp, with rain pouring on him and crocodiles snap at his legs. They give you some cool camera movements too! Before mentioning the awesome moment that completed my love for this game I will address some negatives about it. One being the free run mechanics which in some important mission points just decided that should just stop hang completely motionless from a rooftop and have a little chat with the local rooftop cat. These moments have been present since the dawn of the Assassin's Creed games and it would be very pleasing if they could be corrected in the future. My other problem with it is that some cutscenes and story moments felt rushed at times. I can understand this as the game is more focused in ambiance and exploration but some felt lacking some character. I think the negative argument from above would have been less noticeable had the other cutscenes not been so freaking awesome and gorgeously made. The takes are amazingly done (sometimes) and some dialogue in some the cutscenes really stood out for me, Blackbeard's speech for example. But there is one cutscene, one that makes this game rule over every other AC games. SPOILER ALERT. The final cutscene isn't something you see every day. And I say this because it could have ended with whatever short cutscene featuring Edward going away. But the way it managed to use all the weight of the things you experienced through this adventure and use that amazing shot of all the people that had an impact in your journey was magical. It didn't matter if the relationships with some of them didn't end well but they impacted the journey in a positive way, and that kind of nostalgia can only be achieved in a cutscene if it uses, like I mentioned, the weight of all those hours playing that game. That my friends, is masterful. Maybe it was the music or the nostalgia that swallowed me whole in that moment or seeing Edward smile as he sees his daughter, but that cutscene in general hit me pretty bad, in a good way because I wasn't expecting something that heavy! In conclusion this game, while suffering from some technical issues, is amazing. It stands out in some many ways not previously explored by some AC games and it totally achieves greatness. This game deserves one special spot on your shelve. I am giving it an astounding 9 out of 10!

smokin' graphics..
achraj3 December 2013
After a respite, I have returned to Animus to live the life of Edward Kenway in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. This title picks up after the events of Assassin's Creed III, but has a very different setting. Instead of being a modern day Assassin, hiding from the Templars and delving into the past via an Animus, your character works for the Templars, or rather their Abstergo Entertainment Company as an analyst for the Sample 17 project. The goal of the project is to produce a video game, set in the Caribbean during the golden age of piracy, based on the 'donated' memories that comprise Sample 17.

As the games before it, Black Flag is a third-person, open world, action-adventure title with a heavy emphasis on stealth. As pirate captain Edward Kenway, you stalk the Caribbean for the biggest prizes, and remove any obstacle from your path, typically with a sharp blade. Of course, a pirate would not be much without a ship, and yours is the Jackdaw. It is not the biggest ship sailing the seas, but given the proper resources, it can become the fiercest. Black Flag has an M rating from the ESRB for blood, strong language, violence, and sexual themes. If you should not be exposed to such content, then you likely should not be reading this review.

Should you set sail under the black flag or scuttle this game? Time to find out.

In my opinion a fantastic game
halo-wars9811 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I'm going to rant about some of the other comments. The assassins in this game are mostly on an island called Tulum. There are a few spread across the sea that are essential to the first game. It is still a battle between the Templars and Assassins. I don't understand how you missed the assassins in this game seeing as how you kill an ex-assassin in the very beginning. Now this game actually takes place before Assassins Creed 3. Edward (the main character of Black Flag) is the father of Hathaway whom is the father of Connor in Assassins Creed 3. The story starts off with Edward not taking accustom to Assassins or Templars. He simply is interested in gold and wealth. As the story progresses Edward meets the assassins on a Mayan island as stated above called Tulum. Throughout the story after making contact with the assassins Edward begins to understand the assassins existence. The assassins are not pirates. They are still assassins. When you feel the need to you can exit the animus and roam around the Abstergo building and hack into various computers finding out different information. It's simple, but this game if it looks interesting to you or don't if it does not appeal to you. It's another fantastic Assassins Creed game with fantastic gameplay and an amazing story line with a few twists.

The best pirate video game I've ever played
stewt9331 January 2017
Alright. I have only played Sid Meier's Pirates! (PC) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (PSP) but it still stands.

It's the sixth instalment in the Assassin's Creed series and the familiar game mechanics perfectly suit life on the high seas as a swashbuckling, self-serving, no nonsense pirate.

The ship battles. The choppy voyages in the ocean. The shanties, hidden treasures, multiple factions and the game's economy system mean it is a rewarding play through.

For those familiar to the series Black Flag follows a similar story arch to previous titles: Assassins attempting to thwart the Templars grand plans (albeit from a different angle). But the game's lure isn't in the story line but yet another beautifully constructed sandbox world full of dozens of islands to explore and different types of side missions to embark on. Black Flag isn't a game to be rushed but a world to immerse in and enjoy at your own leisure.

Nevertheless, with the morals of the Creed creeping in it isn't the complete pirate experience but the best one I've had yet.

Disappointing. Very bland and repetitive gameplay. While mediocre, its not quite a "bad" game.
BudgetSecurityGames21 December 2015
After the fairly decent AssCreed3, and considering the many positive reviews for this game, I made the mistake of having slightly higher expectations than usual. This unsurprisingly led to some disappointment (yes, sadly going against the trend in most other reviews). But once I recalibrated my expectations to "standard AssCreed fare", it was not too bad.

The story is messy and silly. It has some good parts but most of it is mediocre - overall not as good as AssCreed3 in my opinion. I have the suspicion casual or younger gamers may like it more. It sorely lacks atmosphere when compared to games like Dishonored or The Witcher or films like 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. The script is full of plot holes (even more than usual). Half of the game is fairly serious and makes some sense, but the other half is silly and does not make any sense. This inconsistency harms immersion. The main character is decent, but does not quite have the charisma of Ezio or Haytham from previous games.

The missions and gameplay built on the story are very bland and repetitive. Almost any potentially interesting story scenario is reduced to a handful of copy-paste follow/sneak/kill/eavesdrop gameplay designs. It seems like the devs were slightly lazier than usual - AssCreed3 missions were far from perfect, but still seemed slightly more varied and hand-crafted.

The difficulty balance of the gameplay is poor. AI detection feels arcade and inconsistent. Stealth areas are severely overpopulated with guards, meaning you are forced to look at the minimap all the time to have any chance of avoiding detection. If you don't reload checkpoints often, open combat is nearly inevitable, which in turn is far too easy. This makes trying to play stealth frustrating, because the odds feel unfairly stacked against you, and it is always so much easier to just fight and kill everyone. But fighting gets boring quickly - you just spam attacks, then counter when prompted, and repeat that indefinitely.

The sandbox gameplay has been brought to the fore, but like the main missions, it is very arcade, bland, and repetitive. The open world is large, but most places all look the same. Compared to AC3, there seems to be slightly less content overall, though still more than enough. The problem is a lack of quality, not quantity. Still things like naval battles and boarding enemy ships are novel for a while and work fairly reliably, which is more than can be said of naval battles in a Total War game (Shogun II etc). The sea shanties (songs) are a nice touch, and possibly the single best feature in this game.

Graphics are the best yet for an AssCreed game, and the first in my opinion to just about match those of Crysis 1 (released 6 years earlier). The water out at sea looks particularly good. The visual quality does not hold up everywhere though - quite a few ugly meshes and textures here and there. The default settings are poorly optimised - you need to manually tweak the settings to get the best visuals while keeping the FPS high. Ship physics are decent and must feel amazing to the average console peasant, but if you have an eye for realism and have been on a real ship, it still leaves much to be desired. Your 150-ton brig behaves like it has the mass and manoeuvrability of a modern olympic racing yacht combined with the stability of a modern river ferry (complete with bow thrusters). You can sail straight into the wind with no speed loss. Enemy ships also handle like powerboats. In some ways the sailing physics were more realistic in AC3 - you could not sail into the wind, and it felt slightly more natural, though admittedly less reliable (momentarily flying ships etc).

PC controls are as bad as usual. They are not game-breaking, but they do work against you - I messed up a lot of missions because my character would do the wrong thing like randomly climbing a wall. A few times just before successfully capturing a huge enemy ship, I would fall from a mast to my death due to glitched controls. The checkpoint system has its usual annoyances and reloads sometimes caused technical problems like missing quest items (requiring quiting to desktop and reloading). I encountered more bugs and glitches and generally rushed content here than in any previous AssCreed game.

Overall, for me, AC4 is a mediocre AssCreed game that wasted a lot of potential. It is not a "bad" game, but it does not deserve any of the hyped reviews.

Ubisoft keeps to the well written formula of the past games while improving on some fields, enough to make the game interesting and fun to play.
CloakedCulprit19 April 2014
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is most definitely the fun game to play.

Gameplay is very similar to that of it's predecessor, but with a lot more naval combat this time (which is something you'd expect from a game about pirates). Speaking of which, the naval combat has been slightly, but nevertheless significantly improved to add to a more pirate- like atmosphere of the game. The one thing I didn't like about it was ' naval stealth', in which enemy ships have cones of vision and as long as you don't enter it they can't see you, which is pretty ridiculous in my opinion.

Black Flag has, so far, the best graphics in the series (although they're not quite next-gen).

As for the story itself, it may be the weakest link of the game. It's not so much focused on the everlasting battle between Templars and Assassins like it was in the previous games. Rather it revolves around Edward's desire for personal glory and gain. Of course, that doesn't make it any less enjoyable to play, it just makes it less an 'Assassin's Creed' title then any other game in the series.

Overall, the game is absolutely worth your time, you can't make a mistake by buying it, although people who haven't played any of it's prequels may have a hard time settling in the story.
