Pretty Funny

First of all, I will never understand people not liking one aspect of an episode and giving it a 1/10. Like seriously? You didn't like 1/3 of the episode and now it's an automatic 1? You know there are other numbers that exist between 1 and 10, right?

Secondly, complaining that this episode was creepy, upsetting, and weird. Umm, yeah? Did you not understand that you've been watching a TV-MA vampire show with a Horror genre tag for 5 seasons now?

Yes, this episode and its creatures definitely are among the most bizarre and weird things this show has done, but it was great! Although I wish they did more with them.

I love that even the parts that are CGI still look like they're using animatronics and everything feels practical. I just love how they have been blending CGI and practical from the very first beginning to make everything look as real as possible. It will definitely age the show like fine wine for the years to come. They don't use cheap CGI that ruins the immersion and make the show look dated.

I just appreciate them caring enough to have practical effects as much as they are able to and not ruin the amazing production and set designs with bad CGI. Even the clearly all CGI creatures and parts still look so well done and the lighting is done so well that it blends the CGI with the environment and makes it look as real as possible and they don't look like cheap TV-level CGI either.

The Guillermo creatures are definitely creepy and bizarre, but this show has always been bizarre from the beginning, and I appreciate them keeping up the wackiness and weirdness even this far into the show. They introduce new vampire power-related things even 5 seasons in and I can't get enough. Because I honestly thought they couldn't do more creative things with vampires and they've done it all. But they keep surprising me this the new creatures and the witchcraft and things like swapping souls and all that stuff, and I really appreciate it that they keep it fresh and introduce new things.

This episode is also really funny but mostly because of Laszlo again. The lines they Matt Berry are absolute comedy gold, but Matt Berry's delivery just makes them the funniest thing ever. Matt Berry can say the most normal sentence ever in his Laszlo voice and you'd be dying of laughter because of his delivery and his hilarious pronunciation of certain words. His pronunciation and talking are definitely one of the best and funniest parts of this show as a whole.

Anyway, this episode might not be one of the best episodes of the show narratively and plot-wise, nor is it the funniest one. But it is still a competent episode that will make you laugh nonetheless and you can't really ignore the efforts they put into being creative with the story and the characters, and also all the efforts put into the production, makeup, and the visual effects.

The only part I thought didn't work that great was Nadja's plotline. They don't really do much at all with that storyline and it's repetitive throughout the episode. It doesn't have the potential or the capability of being that long and definitely felt like they only had an idea for the first act of a plotline for Nadja. But didn't come up with the rest of it and just repeated the same thing over and over and the conclusion isn't satisfying at all.

It's not like they do much with Guillermo's plotline either, but at least that one had Laszlo in it and it was entertaining and funny.

I might be a little generous with my rating here, but I really enjoyed this episode and I thought it was well-made.

Fine episode
eoinageary20 August 2023
I have to disagree with all the 1 star reviews because really ?? 1 star, the worst thing you have ever seen, stupid.

The episode is about Nadja trying to break the curse as she seeks help from and elusive "magic lady", Nador and Collin take over the class that Nadja was teaching and take the class on a history trip, all while Guirllmeo is tasked with eliminating the monstrous creatures made with his DNA that Lazlo had been testing with.

A STRANGE episode to say the least, it did have some funny moments but it didn't have the effect on me previous episodes have been having, it's not a bad one it's just not great either.

Weakest Episode of the Season (So Far) and probably the Series
Thomas_Eric19 August 2023
I usually don't write reviews on imdb, so hopefully you won't mind my sudden appearance. But because Episodes 1-6 of Season 5 (this current season) were the best episodes they ever produced to this show (I rated each one 10/10, something I don't usually do), I felt I needed to say something. Compared to these early episodes, this episode stands out like a sore thumb due to the huge quality drop it has. Allow me to explain further.

The best part of this episode (by far) comes from the Colin Robison and Nandor plot. Not only the jokes landed, but also Mark Proksch and Kayvan Novak made the otherwise lackluster material that was handed to them shine. So let's give this part a generous 8/10 (good, but not great). Mildly funny plot, but otherwise unremarkable and easily forgettable.

Unfortunately, that cannot be said to the horrendous and unsalvageable segment handed to Natasia Demetriou. She is one of the best parts of the show, however, not even a great actress as she can save when is dealt with a complete nothing burger. In fact, I feel disrespected by her. You make your incredible lead actress going around looking for donuts the entire episode?? WTF. If this came out in the 60's, people today would comment something like: "Ohh look at the generic portrayal of women.... This is clearly a sign of those chauvinistic times, where women were giving these 'womenly' tasks". I can't believe we are in 2023 and someone thought that this was okay to write this part and air. So I'm giving this part a 1/10 (complete disaster). A filler segment that is a complete waste of my time, the production's time, Natasia's time (I bet) and just completely dumb. I'm just not giving this a 0/10 because of Natasia's incredible New York accent line delivery. Otherwise, what were they thinking?!

Finally, Harvey Guillén and Matt Berry are dealt the episode's A plot, but because this episode is a mess, it's more like a C plot. For real, did we need two scenes establishing the premise? Even though, I didn't find it particularly funny or remarkable, some jokes did land and at least the meager material was enough for both actors to shine in some spots. I am going to be fair, and give this part a generous 6/10 (above average). After all, the costumes and the creature design were great! It's just that, like the first two previously mentioned plots, the writing just wasn't there.

So basically, who wrote this? I feel like I can honestly do better, and I'm not a screenwriter! This felt much more like one of the mild episodes of last season (which I felt people online didn't like as much) than the great pacing and story of the early episodes this season had. Even though I feel like this episode had its fair writing problems, I'm going to give a generous 7/10, because everything else was spectacular, like always. Hopefully this is the outlier of the season and the last 3 episodes will be as great as the first 6!

make nadja be gay!!
antiromancer18 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I think the show works best when it's about the dynamics of the characters. Separating Nadja from the Vamp group makes the episode feel a lot less interesting, she and the Guide have a great dynamic and should have been kept together this episode (and maybe be gay together). And Guillermo'a storyline should have included more of Laszlo than those horrifying creatures. A lot of the hybrid creature jokes fell a bit flat. The highlight of this episode was the storyline of Colin and Nandor, their friendship might be odd but is wonderful to watch. It also proves the show is the most fun when the actors are able to bounce off of each other.

aw and they were doing so well this season too
nerrdrage19 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I guess they can't all be winners. After a great run of episodes, they had to throw in a stinker.

What has happened with Nadja! The writing for her is awful. What was that nonsense about donuts and why would anyone think it was the least bit funny. She was hilarious in the vampire doc stuff with Guillermo. Attach her to Guillermo at the hip, so she'll be funny again.

The Nandor/Colin stuff was okay. Colin is definitely much funnier this season, not sure why, but it's amazing how much he's improved. I used to wish they'd just write him out of the show.

Once again, Guillermo's plotline is the funniest (and freakiest and most disturbing). I'm twiddling my thumbs waiting for Lazlo to come to the smack-inna-face obvious conclusion: the "Van Helsing muck" is inhibiting the transformation.

No doubt Gizmo will end up as something other than a true vampire. And since they have to wait till the season finale to reveal it, the characters have to be written as stupider than they should be, not to see it, long after the audience has.

Next week, Lazlo gets roasted. Well there's a (silver) bulletproof premise if ever I heard one. Let's go for 10 out of 10!

It was too weird, even for this show.
weechwill19 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I was intrigued when I saw the title of this episode. I thought maybe these hybrid creatures would be mixes between two or more different animals, or maybe between a mythical creature and an animal. What we got was as far from that as possible.

We got nightmare fuel animal human hybrids of different animals mixed with Guillermo's DNA. The hybrid animals could talk, and it was all just a bit uncanny. I understand that this is the point, judging from the fact that this is a TV-MA horror comedy, but I wasn't a fan.

That was just the main plot. The subplots, while still not great, were still better than the hybrid animals stuff. It involved Nandor, Nadja, and Colin and it was kinda fun, but this episode is still weak.

I probably wouldn't have noticed or cared about how mediocre this episode is if it hadn't followed the strongest 6 episode run this show has EVER HAD, containing some of my favorite episodes of the whole show!

I'm hoping that the next three episodes are better.

Worst episode since 'The Orgy' in season 1.

Nightmare Fuel
lindseytheholder19 August 2023
I love the show but this episode was so creepy and upsetting. I will do everything I can to forget it ever existed. Talking guierrnimals were deeply awkward and didn't do anything to actually advance the storyline. Everything else in the episode was pretty back-burner, with Nadja trying to remove the hex but buying donuts for 20 minutes and Nandor forgetting his luggage when migrating to Staten Island. The saving grace was Colin Robinson's "cool teacher" which got the only relatable laughs in the whole episode. Again, I love this show but strongly suggest skipping it and rewatching the Jackie Daytona episode instead.

Hybrid Creatures
bobcobb30118 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It is amazing how far What We Do In The Shadows has fallen off. This show once was appointment television viewing and now it is just nonsensical drivel. I am not sure where they are going with any of these things and they just have Colin, Nandor and Nadja do outrageous things every week.

Colin trying to be the "cool teacher" was mildly amusing, but I don't know why he thought that would be a gold mine for brain draining. There are definitely things more boring than that.

It was not entirely without laughs, but this is just mediocre storytelling and not funny enough to cover that fact up at all.

Unfocused and one of the worst episodes of the series.
dmkroockie31 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I rarely write reviews. But this Episode and its 3 stories where so all over i decided to check its score here. If you like it, ok. But damn this got me out of the series plot for a day or two.

Guillermo animals might've been good idea on the paper but they just lead into nowhere, and are boring in the episode. The fortune taller might have been actually more interesting if she was actually not a cheat. And i already forgot what Nandor and Collin where up too. Talking to death with an actor and. And walking to a store.

Sheesh.

With the season where G turns to a vampire and is both a vampire and a vampire slayer...a lot more could have happened. This felt like a poor writing quality filler episode.

Boring
gpglenpeters18 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
After a couple of decent episodes we're back to boring again. An empty, vacuous and entirely disposable episode. You may as well skip it.

It's called hybrid creatures but they're not really in it much and neither do they matter.

It might've been interesting to explore how Gizmo felt about essentially creating all these various forms of life, but no, rather than facing any kind of moral quandary, or any self-reflection about creating his own Frankenstein's monsters due to his desperate wish to become a vampire finally being realised, he instantly decides not to kill them, as he's instructed, and instead dumps them at a retirement home.

So, what was the point of them being in the show?

Why title this episode 'Hybrid Creatures' only to ignore them for an equally dull and pointless sidequest with nadjia and the supposed hex she's under, which is also entirely underwhelimg.

They're scraping the bottom of the barrel so much they must've chiselled all the way through it by now.

Wrap it up!
