Susuk has redeeming qualities but too many misses, making it an average addition to the horror genre

I recently watched the Indonesian film 🇮🇩 Susuk (2023) on Netflix. The storyline revolves around a prostitute thrown off a building, her sister resorting to an amulet to save her, unwittingly unleashing a threat on their family and town.

Directed by Ginanti Rona (Tainted Soul), the film stars Hana Malasan (Tunnel), Ersya Aurelia (Killers), Jourdy Pranata (One Night Stand), and Elang El Gibran (Tunnel).

With a fairly unique premise, the film's unfolding circumstances was intriguing. The acting is excellent, and scenarios felt authentic. The horror elements shine, despite occasional CGI smoke. Intense, gory kills are magnificently executed, complemented by effective use of lights and shadows for reveals. The corpses were also solid. While well-paced, some elements, particularly in decision-making and reactions, felt a bit corny. The ending, with an eye-rolling fight scene but a fantastic transformation, proved frustrating.

In conclusion, Susuk has redeeming qualities but too many misses, making it an average addition to the horror genre. I'd give it a 5/10 and recommend watching it once.

So confused with the high score reviews from the Indonesian film reviewers ?!

Warning: Spoilers
The storyline doesn't make any sense. All the deaths in this movie are unnecessary or/and unexplainable.

The main plot is: 2 sisters, the older one got murdered, and she couldn't pass away normally (basically she's dead, but all the Jin/Demons from the susuk is controlling her body).

The little sister asked the Ustad in their village to help her sister, and then the Ustad got scratched and told her to give her sister up, but the little sister got offended and found another dukun/spiritual guy.

After most susuk had been taken out by the dukun, there was The First & Strongest Susuk remained & hard to be taken off.

Several things that dont make sense: 1. The mystery of WHO put the susuk in her is remained unsolved 2. Why the ghost is portrayed as their mom 3. What kind of Susuk is even that strong that the first Ustad after being scratched then he's dead in the next few hours?? And that the seemingly strong spiritual guy who had taken most of the susuk, could be sexually tempted by the susuk girl and killed by her just after they only had a dramatic action fight.

4. Other deaths are mostly men killings (not ghosts) 5. It's more a drama rather than a horror.

6. The dialog also inconsistent, sometimes 1 character speaks formally that it sounds so scripted, sometime that same characted will speak with slangs, like whaat

And THE MAIN SOLUTION IS: little sister and this 1 guy just have to burry The susuk girl in the same grave with their mother AFTER they wasted time to dig up the other wrong grave (while the susuk girl remained calm) and once that stupid little sister realized they digged up the wrong grave and start digging the right one, the susuk girl suddenly "awaken" and attacked that guy (who's in love with her; while wounded but also willingly to drive them anywhere for free & dig up the graves) while the stupid little sister just stood there watching it all happened until that guy's dead.

But wait... After that, the susuk sister suddenly remaind "kind/calm" to her stupid sister, and then they "communicate", finally that stupid sister had the courage to push her into their mom's grave.

At the end... that ungrateful stupid little sister left that nice guy's body on the grave ground (after being attacked to death by the susuk sister) and left with his car.

The end???!??!?!

Nice horror movie but very dark
zeeking26 February 2024
The movie was very nice.. good jump scares, good acting but a major drawback was darkness. The night horror scenes which are in abundance are so dark that I couldn't see anything on the screen. I had to turn all my lights off then peek carefully to see what was happening on the screen. They should execute the movie in acceptable light. Leaving this, the story was well executed. This story is about a magical curse on a woman due a susuk which is a ritual to make someone beautiful. However, it came with its own set of issues as the dark demons attached to that susuk wreaked havoc on the small village.
