You will laugh and maybe cry. Watch episode 14 (Ruth) after this. At which point you will definitely cry. In my top 10 HM episodes. My review is short because I don't want to spoil anything. As this show so adeptly does, this episode examines a superficially unexceptional human with such deep and poignant brush strokes that you will want to get stoned and birdwatch with Ruth by the end of it. It will give you the feels. Watch it. And then Ruth.

Cycle 3: Another strong, accessible and engaging cycle

Season 3 of this really great little webseries sees 'the guy' delivering to: a standup comedian dealing with a traumatic event; a chef doing a private function for a family's Passover Seder; and a woman who is seriously ill and has no appetite. This season continues the trend thus far of having 'the guy' be more and more a device and less of a main character. I really like Sinclair's work here since he has less time, but he is supportive and feels like a full character even if we only really see him passing through a bigger scene.
The season starts with an episode which barely has him in it; a stand-up comedian who we see some material from and him joking around with chuckle- groupies (I think this was the phrase) until something happens that gets on top of him emotionally. There is more seriousness here but it is handled really well so it doesn't change the comedic and light tone of the episodes, but rather deepens what was already being done – which I thought was well done. The next two are more comedic but still very nice character pieces where I was genuinely into the people and their situation at that time – although personally I found the humor in Elijah to be a bit broad at times.
It is impressive that each small episode can drop you into a different story and although we have the series linkage and some overlapping characters outside of the guy, we are in new territory each episode, but yet it works. The writing and performances are very good, complimenting each other, while the strong production values makes it feel and sound great no matter the setting. The light accessible tone to the episodes keep it fun and entertaining, with the soundtrack and cool style to match, but I like there is more there than this.
