Wes is surprisingly good at horror
masonsaul1 October 2023
The Ratcatcher lacks the emotional weight of the other Roald Dahl shorts but it remains a beautifully crafted short film that contrasts its visual beauty with a generally creepy nature and some unexpectedly violent imagery in its closing moments.

Making up for being underutilised in Henry Sugar, Richard Ayoade gets so much more here as the narrator and fulfils the missed potential. Between his funny yet off-putting Ratcatcher and once again closing the short as Dahl himself, Ralph Fiennes shows his incredible versatility.

Wes Anderson continues to craft beautiful worlds and briefly returns to his stop motion skills. As with Poison, he also continues to break some new ground with these, using his usual style to showcase some impressive horror sensibilities.

His footsteps didn't make a sound, not even on the gravel.
karannmedhi29 September 2023
"The Rat Catcher" is the latest addition to Netflix's Roald Dahl collection, offering a delightful tribute to Dahl's peculiar storytelling. Narrated by Richard Ayoade and featuring performances by Ralph Fiennes and Rupert Friend, the story follows the enigmatic Rat Man's arrival in a quaint village to deal with a rat problem. Wes Anderson's distinctive style elevates the narrative, with the first half showcasing his signature filmmaking techniques. However, it's the second half where Anderson's creative use of lighting, shadows, and animation truly shines. Inspired by a Dahl short story, the film captures his unique storytelling style and concludes with an intriguingly ambiguous ending. "The Rat Catcher" is a captivating 15-minute short that keeps viewers engaged and offers a fresh perspective on liquorice. It's a must-watch for fans of Dahl's whimsical tales and Anderson's cinematic artistry.

Okay, but a bit disappointing
grantss5 October 2023
Garage owner Claude has a rat problem. He hires an expert to deal with the problem. The Rat Man is truly an expert in his field to the point of resembling a rat himself. While Claude and his employee are fascinated by his methods they are also quite unsettled by him.

Another of Wes Anderson's four-episode short story-series, all adaptations of Roald Dahl stories. The others in the series are The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, The Swan and Poison.

Wes Anderson adapting a Roald Dahl story seems a perfect combination: the clever innocence of Dahl's writing, Anderson's whimsical, stylised direction. It's been done before, to great effect; 'Fantastic Mr Fox' (2009) was brilliant.

Having already watched two of Anderson's Roald Dahl-based short films, the style and presentation of the films are a given. A quirky, reasonably engaging story, narration with the narrator talking in short, bullet-point-like sentences, highly-stylised backdrops and props, great performances (in this case from Ralph Fiennes, Rupert Friend and Richard Ayoade).

A less positive aspect has been that while the story is engaging, it has no punchline. It simply fizzles out. The Rat Catcher is no exception.

Here it is a touch worse in that the story never really seems to fully get going anyway. At least the other two had a fair degree of momentum.

Still, it's interesting and watchable enough.

maybe, I was too tired
Kirpianuscus2 October 2023
Maybe, after three adaptations of Roald Dahl short stories, I was too tired to appreciate The Rat Catcher. Because all seems a sort of mannierism, seductive when you discovere first, not very pleasant later.

A story with horror reflections about Rat Man, his work secrets, his failure and demonstrations. But than Ralph Fiennes is a great actor is a certitude and the subject is so...dirty than far to be the most temptanting.

I suppose, a film for the fans of Roald Dahl. Applauding the Netflix series, being grateful to Wes Anderson art, it seems only...too much.

With the good thoughts about Swan, my favorit from series, I saw The Rat Catcher as the last tricks demonstration of show..

Oddly entertaining and unique...
paul_haakonsen1 October 2023
Well now, I had not heard about this 2023 Netflix short film titled "The Rat Catcher" from director Wes Anderson prior to sitting down to watch it. And truth be told, I thought it was an animated short film actually.

I have to say that the "The Rat Catcher" turned out to be a rather unique and enjoyable viewing experience. The story, as written by Roald Dahl and interpreted by Wes Anderson, was oddly entertaining and enjoyable. And the way that it was brought to the screen was some of the most memorable display I have seen in a long, long time.

There are three people on the cast list; that being Richard Ayoade, Ralph Fiennes and Rupert Friend, and some doing some stagehand performances as well. I rather enjoyed the performances of the three actors with speaking parts. And there was just something very unique about it as well, which made it rather memorable and outstanding.

I was genuinely surprised with "The Rat Catcher", and while it is certainly not something that will just sit easily with everyone in the audience, then this is certainly a short film that I would recommend you to sit down and spend 17 minutes on. I was genuinely and wholeheartedly entertained by this unique piece of cinema.

My rating of "The Rat Catcher" lands on a seven out of ten stars.

If you want to kill them become one of them!
lucasagustink12 October 2023
This Short-story Directed by Wes Anderson and protagonized by Ralph Fiennes (The Rat Catcher). Tells the story of a little town with a rat issue. To solve this problem they resort to a peculiar, misteryous and unorthodox rat Catcher. This story carries you during 17' through a nice story which happens in your ears with the voice of the narrator but also on the screen, So you mix the imagination on books with the comodity that represents watching a TV.

The director creates a perfect mix between movie and audiobook, creating a completely New Genre. Watch it! At the end it's just 17 minutes!

Thanks for reading!

Oh, rats!
Pjtaylor-96-13804425 January 2024
'The Rat Catcher (2023)' is probably the weakest of Wes Anderson's four short Roald Dahl adaptations, primarily because it kind of feels as though it's lacking a point. In a way, it's a quirky character study of its eponymous rodent trapper, who becomes creepier and creepier as the piece progresses, as seen through the bemused eyes of the people who hire him. Making use of similar stage play techniques to 'The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar (2023)' but being far less elaborate, the picture unfolds in the same hyper-concentrated from of its director's style as the other entries in its pseudo series. The narration comes quickly and without pause, the characters often look dead down the barrel of the lens and, save for a brief stop-motion segment, the effects and props are all entirely imaginary. It's a distinct aesthetic, for sure, and it does work to catch your eye. Just under twenty minutes also feels like a more suitable runtime for this type of affair, so the flick manages to hold your attention throughout while never feeling too overwhelming. Ralph Fiennes' performance as the rat-like rat catcher is really enjoyable, as is Rupert Friend's brief stint as a rat. Like I said before, though, there just doesn't seem to be all that much to the story. It ends on an entertaining punchline but is far more about its vibes than its narrative. Still, it's a solid effort overall that's definitely distinct.

Catch that Rat. Only Catch!
AvionPrince1629 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Im still not convinced about the way of telling the story and really make me a little bit frustrated: stop telling us and just let us see. That break of the fourth walls is really not convincing at least for me and break what the movie its all bout: visual. So its kind of a parasite to hear and see the same action at the same time and its kind of too much in my opinion.

But as the others little short of Wes Anderson what really make it pleasant are the visuals and the set design and that particular mise en scene during the fight between the rat and the rat catcher. Of course the story is pretty stylised and dont represent reality but i really enjoyed it anyway despite my own personal preferences and the style is definitely here.

Rat-themed horror-comedy, grim but fun
jamesrupert20144 October 2023
The local rat-catcher (Ralph Fiennes), who bears a disquieting resemblance to his prey, is engaged to extirpate a minor infestation of the creatures. Wes Anderson's spin on the eponymous Roald Dahl short story is quite fun (in a grim way) as the resourceful Rat Man explains his various highly unpleasant methods of dispatching his clever quarry. His final demonstration of Homo's sanguineous dominance over Rattus, although largely unseen, is brutally amusing (and sadly not unprecedented considering some of the revolting blood-sports to which animals have been sacrificed in the not-so-distant past). Attention to detail may make the final lines less cryptic. Of Wes Anderson's four recent Roald Dahl inspired short films, this was my favorite.

It's mediocre
UniqueParticle4 October 2023
Very strange fast paced short by legendary artist Wes Anderson, I can see how this has mixed vibes. I enjoy most anything by Wes but this is just weird and to complicated, the movies are much better! Rat Catcher is peculiar, slight horror vibes, and outrageous. This would be different if it was the beginning of Wes's career I think he's losing his magic touch with this sort of thing although I love the creepy vibes Wes defiantly has the potential to do horror if he wanted to. I was looking for a different short I didn't realize there's several of them they should be interesting and artsy even if not enjoyable as other projects.

Awful
acre-066671 October 2023
Wes Anderson seems to have given up on making films and is now making the most wooden and awkwardly narrated audiobooks you've ever heard whilst actors stand in place on a theatre set and uncomfortably stare straight at you, it's really cringy and off putting, I really don't need to have Richard Ayoade staring straight at me not blinking whilst he's narrating everything in a droning monotone. Also you now have to imagine things because it wouldn't be pretentious enough to actually show what's happening visually. I used to love Wes Anderson films but recently he seems to have gone so far up his own a*se I just can't get behind any of this new cr*p.

HANDS DOWN, THE BEST SHORT FILM I'VE EVER SEEN
ilovetalley7 October 2023
This is why I loved watching British comedy when I was growing up, and it is why I loved reading books by Roald Dahl and other great children's authors. It is unnecessary to be spoon fed every single detail of a story; half the fun is using your imagination to fill in the blanks. It's why theatre is so amazing; because you have to pay close attention and watch for clues.

I was in tears of laughter throughout most of this performance. The entire cast, direction, and setting was perfection. No one attempted to steal the spotlight, but instead let the story be the vehicle and allowed the audience to take wheel for individual interpretation.

What initially seems like monotonous droning from the narrator in the early moments immediately becomes a point of humor, and in fact leads to the excitement of the climactic scenes.

Even after everything slows down and it seems like it's done, you still have to be on your toes or you might miss amusingly vital information in the concluding moments.

A thoroughly entertaining experience. I've watched it multiple times and have recommended it to everyone I know.

Absolutely horrible
aleksandraj044 October 2023
As a big Wes Anderson fan, I was quite disappointed with the short-film ,,The rat catcher". Worst 17 minutes of my life. Rather disturbing, disgusting and boring to watch. I like Wes Anderson's style of narrating, so It's the only thing I enjoyed. I felt as if I'm watching a kids movie, but not in a good way. I would definitely recommend other short-films that Anderson released (especially ,,The wonderful Story of Henry Sugar") and you can easily avoid watching this one.... The thing I hate the most about this short-film is that it doesn't even have a point and a deeper meaning, atleast I didn't understand it while I was watching.

I watched if for Richard Ayoade's sake...
muratmihcioglu2 February 2024
...and yeah, I'm glad I did. At 1.25x the speed, the experience was worth the 17 minutes. Happy customer here.

Sorry that I no longer buy Wes Anderson's seemingly-genuine tricks. Life Aquatic was great but anything other than that, I could live without.

As for this one: Yep, there's artistic value in his approach. But so what? Any film-tv student can do this much. Problem is, you need a pumped-up name in order have your simple solutions be valued. It takes Wes Anderson to propose such experimental shorts to whoever is gonna be in on them. And yeah, the result is satisfactory.

The cast works and I believe Roald Dahl would be happy with the outcome had he been around to see how miserably certain other adaptations do.

Wes Anderson short from Roald Dahl story
SnoopyStyle4 October 2023
A reporter (Richard Ayoade) and a mechanic (Rupert Friend) watch as Rat Man (Ralph Fiennes) sets off to catch rats.

This is a Wes Anderson film adapted from a Roald Dahl story. He has released four such shorts on Netflix. In a way, these combine for a full length movie. Maybe that's the initial intention. The most intriguing aspect is Ralph Fiennes' rat-like appearance. He's doing a lot with a little. Instead of doing mime, I would use plush toy animals for the rat and ferret battle. That scene needs movement inside his shirt. It's all done with ratty fun. There is an aspect of the ending that I didn't get without doing some reading. It's missing the morbidity of the story. The ending is a little too open-ended.

A short that shows both Anderson and Dahl at their most wonderfully macabre
dr_clarke_226 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Another of the three shorter Wes Anderson Roald Dahl adaptations made to accompany The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, The Rat Catcher shows both director and late writer at their most wonderfully macabre. It's a slight tale about the eponymous Rat Catcher, who freely admits that in order to understand his prey, he has had to become very much like them... The Rat Catcher is a black comedy with a fairly disgusting denouement, and unlike the accompanying stories, it isn't really about anything, it's just a gleefully unpleasant and twisted vignette. Anderson has great fun, with more of the typical deliberately stylised sets, albeit no actual rats. At one point, the Rat Catcher pulls a rat from one pocket and a ferret from the other, in both cases Ralph Fiennes simply miming with his empty hands to show their presence. Later, he uses an obvious rat prop, which is later brought to life by animation.

Fiennes is brilliantly seedy as the Rat Catcher, and also briefly appears as Dahl again too, joining in the narration during a particularly tense moment when the Rat Catcher kills a rat with his teeth. Richard Ayoade and Rupert Friend join him, and in stark contrast to The Swan, this sees the three actors exchanging dialogue, although there's still a narrator essentially reading the story, in this case mostly Ayoade, in character. Overall, The Rat Catcher is the most playful of the four shorts, albeit playful in the disturbingly surreal way that Dahl excelled at.

Darker, more involved acting, and a story that leaves you on the edge of your chair.
KinoBuff202119 November 2023
'The Rat Catcher' (2023) is the 3rd installment in the Wed Anderson directed Netflix "series" of Roald Dahl stories. And like the other parts its pretty narrator driven but acting and scenery both being used sparingly to add to the story. But you probably know that by now. However this short film involves more acting and expands it uses of scene environment and lighting.

Overall, so far it doesn't seem to be my favorite of the short films released (I haven't seen the fourth film, 'Poison' yet) but I still think it is good. Combining Dahl and Anderson was not something I knew I needed despite loving 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' (2009). This whole series is great.

What I love about this film is that the darker tone is brilliantly used and the narration leaves you questioning what will happen next. I do feel that this film seemed too short or at least incomplete (unless you have read the other stories from the book this short film is based on). The scenes are still relaxing but it almost feels like someone else is making a Wes Anderson film.

I think its still above average but the not best of the series.

The Rat Catcher.

The Rat Catcher.

In an English village, a reporter and a mechanic listen to a rat catcher explain his clever plan to outwit his prey.

Watching The Rat Catcher after The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and The Swan was an absolute disappointment!

It was really fun indeed, beautifully made as the others maintaining the same style of directing and storytelling, but I just don't get it, I found the story a bit silly and useless unlike the ones I mentioned before.

I still think it's an OK short movie just because of Wes Anderson at the wheel.

He should make more of these short narratives, I won't get enough.

SIMPLY PERFECT! UNBELIEVABLE GOOD!
alexanderliljefors29 September 2023
Another fabulous piece, embracing Wes Andersons true creative passion and artistic talent!

In only 17 minutes (Just like one of his other shortfilma made for Netflix: "The Swan") Wes Anderson manages to craft a unique and original amazing adaptation of one of Roald Dahls many novels.

SIMPLY PERFECT! UNBELIEVABLE GOOD!

Storytelling is amazingly put together!

Filming and cinematography is aswell more then fantastic!!

The way he uses colour, light, shadows and filters is just incredible!

I really recommend! Its only 17 minutes and it's definitely worth it! It's extremely well made and extremely well performed!

Very Weird.
KFstudios20099 October 2023
The Rat Catcher is a short Netflix film about a man that catch rats with his incredible, mysterious skills. Baesd on Roald Dahl's short story, this was an interesting concept, but I don't think it was such a good film. Interesting aspect of narrate and storytelling, weird scenography, a mix of animation and live-action at the same time, bright, retro colours with bright blue that I can see is a Wes Anderson movie. He does something with that movies that make them very different, but weird. I don't think the Rat Catcher was so good overall, though. It was very unnecessary, and some storytelling ideas was badly made and really, it was like watching an adult kindergarten performance. The rats weren't even showed in the movie, and that was supposed to use your imagination but it felt just incomplete and bad. The story was generic and I think that even young children is going to be bored. I was bored myself, I tried to understand why Wes did make this movie at all, I think that it shouln't even by made. Should not be watched.

Wes Anderson shines in gothic gem
martinpersson978 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Wes Anderson continues in, what very well might be, his most productive year yet - having released a most anticipated feature film, as well as several interesting short films.

In this film, he explores a classic sort of gothic tale in interesting fashion, and does so gracefully as ever.

The actors, as always in Wes Anderson's films, great and legendary. Very impressive, and all do an incredible job.

The script is ever witty, not that much in terms of frightning, which is not what he set out to do, but more in terms of style and susbtance.

The cinematography, cutting and editing, stellar as always, very much in tune with Anderson's style, and very beautifully put together.

Overall, very much a recommended gem, for any lover of film and every fan of Wes Anderson!

Just horrible.
NullUnit17 October 2023
I'll never watch this again...

I'll walk out of any theater.... I punch a buddy in the face for suggesting it.... I'll get a divorce if the wife brings it up.... I'll disown the children for playing it in the house.,, I'll quit my job if the boss likes it....

This is truly one of the least entertaining more droll, repetitive, projects I've seen in some time. It's not even so bad that it's good. It's just bad.

Incessant narration from start to end. Much of the time pointlessly describing the visuals on screen.

I can not fathom why anyone would create a project that is essentially a postcast for a visual medium.

It's nothing short of pointless pretentious drivel to be passed off as "art". Made for those behind and on screen.. not for an audience.

2 stars merely because production levels were above basement level - unlike the story and direction.

Catch it if you can
kosmasp14 February 2024
And you only need Netflix to do so - well maybe it will be on another streaming platform too at some time. Until then no pun intended. And this was the final short movie I did watch - there is only so many you can watch back to back. First one was the Sugar one (Oscar nominated in 2024) .. have to admit, title wise this felt like the one I would be into most.

As I love animals and all that - of course there is more to this. You have the imagination of Dahl and the exectution of Wes Anderson. Not read the source material, but if you know Dahl and Wonka and other things he has written, you know he is quite out there. And so are these shorts ... great dialog, great cinematography ... Dahl and Anderson is quite the amazing fit - again no pun intended.

Very strange Wes Anderson short!
bignuts-0624523 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Ralph Fiennes, Richard Ayoade & Rupert Friend star in this really weird tale which seems to be about a couple of mechanics who hire an exterminator who tries to convince them that the best way to catch a rat is to pretty much become one. Thank god this is only 17 minutes long as if it were any longer I'd have lost interest even faster than I did! It's such a mind boggling & mind numbingly boring story that if I were you I would completely give it miss & find anything else to watch! It's just a typical Wes Anderson style tale, he's obviously obsessed with trying to be different but he's just gone way too far again!

Could have been great if not for awful casting.
crazyjooster1 December 2023
Could have been great if not for awful casting. Don't get me wrong, Rupert Friend was good enough. Ralph Fiennes was great as he always is. But Richard Ayoade has got to be the most annoying, dullest, awful actor I've ever seen. He ruined the whole story from start to finish, it was actually quite difficult to concentrate on the story or enjoy Fiennes acting because of just how awful Richard Ayoade is. It's actually putting me off wasting 40mins watching The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar knowing that he is in it and is probably going to ruin that too.

Whoever did the casting on this shouldn't ever work again.
