Enjoyable but extremely rushed
dsjoshua7 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a big fan of the Danganronpa series and have been for a while. I loved the first game, the second is one of my favorite games of all time and the 3rd main series game is coming out (Another Episode is canon to, but I never played it cause I rarely play shooter games. And when I heard there was an anime for it I got excited and decided to watch it.

And what did I think? Well let's start off with the positives. The animation is fine for what it is, the voice acting (minus Junko's) was decent-tolerable at best. And while it is enjoyable this thing has a major flaw. It is rushed to no end. If you've played the game like me, a red flag should be going off in your head at this being 13 episodes. There was no way they could make it without being rushed. As a result it's hard to connect to the characters or find anything memorable really, and that bad seeing that anyone of them could be killed off in a moment. At least in the game they gave you time to learn about some (not saying all) of the characters and the story, but here it is just rushed. Danganronpa was something that needed at least 20+ episodes at best. Instead you got 13 episodes that were rushed and in the end, it sucks to see that happen to a game, especially one you love

Very rushed
martin_merelesc25 February 2022
Danganronpa could be a better show if it wasn't so rushed, paid more attention to the characters, and maybe went ahead with the game. I suggest watching it through the first murder case to decide if you want to continue or not. Regardless, go into this without high expectations or play the game as most players suggested.

Meh
zoelbrewer2 October 2018
I used to love this anime, until of course I played the games. The anime is way too fast pace and doesn't really give the viewer time to breathe. The game on the other hand is 20-60 hours and you can take your time and savor it. It's also missing the free time in which the characters could be developed.

Amazing Plot
schanzaysohail25 December 2020
Honestly liked the sow a lot binged it in one day. There's a lot of suspense in the show a lot of tension. The characters aren't written very well, But the animation is beautiful and the plot add ons. It starts off as a pretty mediocre show, you can easily guess who committed most of the murders. The end wasn't very good either pretty cliche, like the good always wins kind and them not showing the outside world at the end made it seem like it was just a advertisement for their game. They could've done so much better compared to game but i would still recommend watching this show if you're into fast paced animes. Its pretty short so i dont regret watching it mediocre though.

Could have been better
mafiagirl-214316 December 2021
While I don't think it's the worst anime adaptation of a visual novel ever made, I wouldn't recommend this to someone who wants to get into Danganronpa, I'd rather recommend the games before and then maybe the anime.

Started a great love!

First Viewing: Japanese Dub; no prior game play.

I don't know or care what the tween "critics" say about this anime, I'm glad I watched on pure recommendation and it was absolutely worth it. The end may have hit me a bit personally and I found myself unintentionally crying. (Dealing with severe depression, it put the hope/despair into a wonderful light and the writers should be praised for putting it in perspective.)

It's pretty obvious it will differ from the game, so that argument is just laughable. The point is, I never played the games until I watched the anime and I'm sure that was exactly the point. It did seem a bit rushed, which is why I played the games after. And it sure didn't sour me from doing so.

The Japanese cast is incredible! With many popular seiyuu for nostalgia and some newer ones to fully appreciate.

Overall, being new to the series this was the best place to start. The animation wasn't golden, though I found that's hardly a problem if the story holds up as great as this did.

Ultimately
Mysterygeneration15 January 2024
This is the ideal illustration of a poorly done video game adaptation. It is NOT a good idea to try to compress roughly 25 hours of content into 13 episodes, unless you want a highly rushed show with very uninteresting characters. It is horrible.

The adaptation of the story was actually rather good. Despite the haste, nothing crucial was missed. I do have a few concerns about the probes, though. If the most crucial aspect of unraveling a mystery is hurriedly covered in just three minutes, how are you expecting viewers of anime to figure out whodunit? Additionally, it appeared as though Kirigiri and Naegi were pulling something out of their asses throughout the trials due to hurried investigations.

That is another thing : class trials. The first class trial comprised thirteen individuals. I thought everyone had to talk at least once? Thus, the actual mystery-solving portion was hurried once more. However, as the program progressed, the number of students decreased, which made the trials feel less hurried (the trials in chapters 4 and 5 are the finest examples). This just serves to demonstrate that 13 episodes was insufficient.

The art comes next. Despite the peculiar character style, the characters appear vibrant and distinct from one another! You could pretty much determine who had what talent just by glancing at their appearance. It's not like Komatsuzaki Rui has done a bad job in designing.

Ultimately, the Danganronpa anime featured a few redeeming qualities, but its severely limited episode count and lack of character development ultimately caused it to be badly handicapped. I didn't really enjoy the anime for that reason.

Best Anime I've Ever Seen!
ethanpnicol29 December 2018
I loved every minute of this show, and I don't think that the writers could have done better. It was so fun to try and figure out all of the mysteries alongside the characters, and be drawn in and devastated based on things that happen!

Worthless adaptation
meissotruey16 August 2022
Finished 3 chapters of the original game and i can say that this tv series missed like every single of dozen original details, jokes, story, essentials and dialogues. Though the animation itself is lovely, everything else is a nightmare. To me the original game was more for 12-18 years people( and it was good), but this adaptation is for 6 years old? Couple of episodes enough to say that this just not worth it, though the game is long, you should definitely take your time and play Trigger Happy Havoc.

P. S. Finished the game, and though last 2 episodes were quite bad still, the game much better exp.

"HIYA KIDDOS"
Irishchatter16 November 2018
I absolutely love the teddy bear Monokuma, he's like my spirit animal with the way he comes out with stuff and that's always trolling to get on everyones nerves. As dark I am, I think he is just totally cute! I was quite surprised that most of the reviews here didn't like this first adaption of Danganronpa at all! I find it enjoyable and that each character had their own unique personalities. The psychological vibe on this would really dive you into a world of thriller and mystery like I find that entertaining lol! Seriously though I thought this first adaption was class and I only found out about this anime series not too long ago.

I am really glad I got the chance to watch this anime, it was terrifyingly good. Also note for the parents, do not show this to kids, there so much messed up stuff on it that it is quite scary! In my opinion, I give this anime a 8/10 for its thrilling ride of monopoly!!!!

Loved it!
ananshree16 March 2019
The story had an amazing plot and the mysteries and the criminals just made it better. But all the stories and games for this series makes it confusing on which order to watch it in.

Not as good as the game
chloeg-2525 April 2021
Compared to the game it's just meh. It's definitely super rushed and not as detailed as the game. I'd recommend playing the game or watching someone play it instead of watching this. Still enjoyable, not terrible, just not as good as the game.

Cured my depression
hopespeakhighacademy25 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Before watching Danganronpa, I was very depressed. I kept hoping I would feel less sad someday, but I never did. After watching Danganronpa and entering into the service of our Lady and Savior Junko Enoshima, I know hope is BAD. Despair is the best emotion. I feel so much despair daily, and I enjoy every bit of it, which cured my depression since I no longer hope for hope. Now I enjoy my suffering and it makes me so happy when I feel despair. I am now a loyal follower of Junko, who everyone should serve. KUMBAYA MY LORD

DESPAIR IS THE BESTTTTTTTTT

Ridiculous plot even for a cartoon
interestingstuff26 October 2021
Even for a cartoon/animation, the plot of this show is extremely stupid and absolutely nonsensical. None of the court scenes made an ounce of sense, neither did any of the killing motives or any of the characters. Was this plot written by a 7 year old kid?

A binge-worthy anime!
h-eiroglyphss30 September 2021
For me, Danganronpa was a great anime. I loved the characters, the suspense, the plot, everything. I'll always show my gratitude to my friend for introducing it to me. After 13 episodes, however, the show was over. Almost as soon as I had started watching it, it was over. I never played the original video games (but I am aware of some fans' frustration), though I do share the same opinion as many of them: it was too rushed. I wish there were more episodes to learn more aboit the characters, and more episodes for the story to play out. Despite this, however, I still do love it (I gave it a solid 8, after all), and it'll still probably be one of my top 5 animes.

So, who would I recommend this to? I'd say Danganronpa is a good anime for people who love mysteries and can handle blood. I wouldn't suggest it for their first anime, however.

Such a rehash.

If I wanted to see the first Danganronpa game, I would just play the game. I don't need the same thing, but with no control and terrible voice acting.

Don't watch this, it sucks.

This show deserves more love
wainwrightkelly11 June 2021
I personally think this is a great series I think they should of kept it true to the game but I still like this and think it should get more love.

I put this rating as 8/10 because it didn't stay true to the game and the fact there is other amazing series's out there.

Extremely underrated
paulgasko28 June 2022
The Fans of the the first danganronpa game hate it for a reqsom which doesn't make sense. They say, it's too rushed, but they don't know that the game wants to give the Player the feeling, he is really in this world. And that's why he exsperience almost everything. This pacing is very good for a concept like this, but for an anime it would be way too slow. Sometime the anime actually a bit rushed because the anime skipped some parts that would be good even for the anime and some dialogs but there not much missing to be perfecr for the anime. And the most important information for the Story, characters and development are still there. The setting and athmophare were even better in the anime. Many scenes are more deep and creepy in the anime, because of the backround und music. The most scemes of the game has a happy or actionful music that don't fit with the actuall scene. The anime fixed that problem and even has one of the best Settings and charme of every anime. Overall the anime is objectively way better than the Fans of the games rated it but that's actually no wonder because the Dr community is always a bit stupid. For example there is a character who gets hate for betraying someone for a good reason and someone who betrayed way more people for absoloutely no reason is very populare.

GOAT
ryness-857764 August 2023
If you have played the games, you will understand Danganronpa is a couple steps above the rest. Dangaronpa is not the best video game or anime of all time, however its special (especially Danganronpa 2 (game). The anime of course is not as good as the video game. Which is an impossible task, so lets get that out of the way. If you have played all of the games then this should be a fun ride, reminding yourself why you enjoyed the games in the first place. If you have never heard of Danganronpa then just go play the first game and go from there. Also! The music.. even if the anime was subpar the music alone is a 10/10. Now do yourself a favor, give it a 10 and go buy Master Detective Archives: Rain Code (Switch exclusive). You will thank me later.

It was good but the game was better
Turquoisehaykitty7 December 2020
This adaptation is good but they went a little rushed in some of the scenes for explaining. The class trials were one episode. Maybe they should have been two episodes like the last one. But I don't understand why people hate it. It wasn't bad.
